The young machinist looked at the note she was holding. It read: 'Please, report at the Mission Control at 8:00 a.m. in the 15th, for a complete medical check, and to collect your equipment, mission issued clothing and documentation and your instructions. Do not be late'. Looking at her wrist watch - an old fashioned device she still made a point of owning -, Michelle took a deep breath. She was just in time, at least the time she had planned on getting there.

After going through the entrance booth - a process that involved presenting documents, waiting for her identity to be confirmed and having her person and belongings searched -, she was finally allowed into an entrance hall. In there, she had to once again present her identification, have her name put in the system and sit down on a row of chairs by a wall. Apparently, the entire group assigned to the mission would come in today, and they would all be supposed to report to the mission doctor. Adorable, the girl thought to herself. That's a good way of meeting her new coworkers. She really hoped the mission doctor would be a serious and decent guy, not some creepy weirdo. Otherwise, he might lose a few teeth during the physical.

Looking at her watch again, the young woman pulled a reading device out and started studying the information about the ship she had gotten from Mission Control. She would have to take a look at it personally later, of course, but, having already been informed that would only happen once everyone was there and they had gone through all of the bureaucratic part of the process, she didn't have anything better to do right now than to read up on what she was going to be dealing with. As she did, a part of her hoped that everyone else would know that she was busy and not try to make small talk. It was bad enough that they were supposed to actually introduced themselves to everyone at some point during the process. There was no need to make this any more painful than it already sounded.

Christopher Toa had worked hard to get where he was. With PhD in Geology, and a Masters in Biology, as well as training in various other fields, he was a scientist through and through. He had lead several expedition groups in studying the various life that existed in the solar system. He was a keen surveyor, always knowing what type of terrain would work for life. So he was often the first call when someone needed consultation before travelling to one of the uncolonized planetary bodies in the solar system. He had even spent 2 years in the underground caverns of Ceres to get it prepared for a waystation for people travelling to the outer solar system.

Needless to say, he was ready for this. When he was personally asked to take part in a mission to colonize the new earth-like planet that had been discovered, Christopher knew he wanted to be a part of it--he knew he was done with earth, and the solar system. Perhaps “grass was always greener on the other side,” was an appropriate idiom for this, but right now, he wanted the other side even if the grass looked brown and bleak. Of course, he still needed to pass a few tests and psychological exams, but he wasn’t worried.

He walked into the hallway, where he was supposed to see the doctor, and only one other was there--a young woman. In fact she seemed almost too young. Christopher was often considered a young achiever, having made the top 30 under 30 in the Science Andromeda blog for 3 years in a row, and he often turned heads at events when he displayed his intelligence amongst the other scientists, normally averaging about fifty years old. So to see such a young crew member stunned him for a moment. However as he walked in and took his seat a few chairs away from her, he realized it did make sense. If they were going to set up a colony far far away, they may as well send the brightest, and youngest, to get things going. There would less chance of medical problems, and more decades to get things set up and built.

He realized he didn’t know her name--and in fact he didn’t know any of the crew members. He contemplated asking, but she seemed buried in whatever she was studying. There would be plenty of time for introductions later on after all. So instead he followed suit, and pulled out his datapad.

He did receive a lot of information about the new planet though, currently named LX-1227 (though he doubted that would be it’s official name after it gets colonized--it didn’t exactly roll off the tongue). He looked at the datapad which had a rough map of the planet. He studied what he could of the landing site as he wanted to know the landmarks like the back of his hands. The planet was far away, so they didn’t have a lot of information, but they knew it was primed for life. It seemed tame for a planet, without much volcanic activity, plenty of water and breathable air. However there weren’t any immediate signs of life. In all the photos and video, there wasn’t even any plant life. Christopher found this curious, as life always finds a way in even the harshest of conditions, from the deep darkest oceans of Europa, to the lava tubes of Venus. And LX-1227 was not harsh by any means. Clearly, it would need a lot of studying, one of the many things he was excited about.

After a bit of studying, he put his datapad away in his sling bag and sat there, waiting to see if anyone else would arrive...

Peter Aldo

Damn it. Peter clapped his roughed hands to his face and rubbed slowly, His brain felt foggy, which wasn't a surprise since he hadn't slept the night before, except for a brief fifteen minutes where he dreamed that he was falling from the sky. Normally Peter was an extremely heavy sleeper, to the point of constant hypersomnia. Today was different, filling him with so much stress that he had laid awake, counting the number of stains on his ceiling and imagining launching into space over and over again.

The day that Peter had applied to join the colonization program seemed like a far off dream. It was a strange decision to make for someone who hated the idea of space travel, to volunteer for such a mission. But still, the psych tests had been clear that he'd be a perfect fit for the mission.

He just wanted to get away, really.

Hurtling in a tin can, far off from the planet's surface, or any surface, for that matter.

Was it worth it?

Peter forced himself out of the covers and made himself a cup of coffee. After pouring in a cow's worth of milk he chugged it, dropping the mug in the sink and looking at the clock above the oven. It was too early to leave, but too late to sleep. He groaned and opened the fridge, searching for the familiar Styrofoam box of last afternoon's Chinese. As a cook, he rarely made anything for himself, preferring takeout and microwaveable meals. If not for his obsessive exercising, Peter likely would have been over 400 pounds.

Grabbing the box, Peter clunked down at his kitchen table and began devouring the sweet-and-sour chicken by plastic forkfuls.

When he had emptied the container, Peter dropped it in the trash and looked back to the clock. Still too early. It was hard to expect that Chinese food would take over two hours to eat anyway. But Peter could hope.

Packing had been done the night before, so there wasn't anything to occupy his time with. Peter could grab and go. He always tended to be prepared early. It was a trait developed by years of cooking. The most arduous task was always the cutting, peeling, soaking, dicing. Once that was done, he just needed to turn up the heat and wait. This time, the wait was excruciatingly long.

All of his belongings for the next forever, in a single black Duffle bag by his door. Half was filled with cooking supplies; knives, pans, and spices, to name a few. Peter couldn't trust the crap they'd likely have on board the ship. Sure, it was a mission funded by the government, but anything that wasn't Peter's personal equipment had to be crap.

The other half was filled with personal belongings. Two pairs of jumpsuits, one green and one tan; 2 pairs of jeans, a thick flannel shirt, and three tee-shirts. Everything else was an assortment of oddities.

Peter looked around the apartment for anything he could have missed. He was glad he had when he saw that the picture of a little girl was still on his dresser. He snatched it and wrapped it gently in his flannel shirt.

He was ready to go.

The walk felt like a journey of eternity to reach the Space Agency building. As he reached the entrance booth, he suddenly realized it might not be open so early. As he approached the door, however, it was clear there was already plenty of activity. As he entered he was spotted by some woman with a lanyard, who stopped him and asked him to provide identification.

Peter provided the proper paperwork and held back his disgust as the woman rifled through his belongings. He was eventually cleared and walked out into the hall. What had she been looking for? Dangerous weapons? They let him keep his knives, so the check seemed more like a formality than anything else.

As he sat down on the farthest of the chairs that lined one wall, Peter wished he had had a second coffee. His head was pounding and his eyes felt heavy. He didn't expect any of the other crew members to arrive very soon. He found it strange that none of them had met yet. What sort of idiot planned that? Complete strangers isolated from the rest of the world, in close confinement. It wasn't that he disliked people. He simply didn't trust most.

Peter let out a long, drawn-out sigh and put his head against the wall. He let his eyes slowly close.

Let's not fall this time, shall we? he thought as he began dozing off.

Dude looks like a lady

The old music blared on the speakers in his office, while the good doctor sang along nearly as loudly the pen between his fingers used as a mini drumstick that beat in time to the tapping of his foot. Today was the day. THE DAY when the rest of his crew would meet up, get checked out and then be off to set foot on what could be the new home of the human species. It was exciting to say the very least and good old Dr. T thought that a bit of Aerosmith was the only way to properly celebrate as he read over the files given him. Thus far, the crew seemed to literally be the finest that anyone could have dreamt up.

A group of overachievers and go-getters. They were like the dream team for the Olympics or the all-star draft of any professional sports team. If the team passed their visits with him then they would be set to head out into the stars and boldly go where no one had gone before. At the thought of the iconic line from one of his favorite shows, Titus pulled up a file on his computer and dropped into the storage unit he would be bringing with him. 10 terabytes of data on some of the best classic representations of mankind's creativity in a desire to reach the stars. Or, as other non-fans would put it, “Load of Nerd Junk from Star Trek to Stars Wars and everything in between.” Sure, he might get a couple of looks and even a chuckle or two at his expense, but when they were all bored out of their minds they would be begging him for some Episode 1 or some Spock Goodness.

Just wait of see.

SMACK

The ball of paper connected with his nose and caused him to look up from the screen, the music lowered at the same time. “Yes, Shawn?” The nurse stood at his door and looked none too amused by the loudness of the music.

“There are another two out there now. The one that came early is basically swimming in a pool of his own drool. The female was joined by a male who also decided to read rather than engaged with the others that were waiting.”

“Fascinating,” Titus remarked already up from his desk he gathered up his files and instruments. “Let’s start with the female first. Get her into an examine room. Wake up the one that fell asleep and see if he needs anything. Coffee, juice…an energy drink. Whatever he asks for and how he takes it let me know exactly…ignore the other.”

“You and your games are going to get your beat up. Again.” Shawn replied but already took notes on what he was asked to do.

“The last time I allowed myself to get beat up to test my own physical endurance.”

“Sure thing. Keep telling yourself that.”

As instructed, Shawn would go out to get Michelle, see to Peter and ignore Christopher.

Matias stepped out into the brisk morning air, taking a deep breath through his nose with eyes closed. He would remember the synthetic-feeling air of Earth with nostalgia, but he sure as hell wasn't going to miss it. He closed the door to his apartment behind him, tightened his grip on the handlebar of his suitcase, and began to make his way out of the complex.

It was 7:40 AM, Mission Control was across the street from his house, and his throat and stomach felt pleasantly warm from the steaming cup of tea he had just had. Oh, and he was also about to set off on the most exciting step of his life: colonization of a far-off planet. He smiled. Life was good, near perfect really.

He had already triple checked everything in the suitcase and his backpack before coming, and knew he wasn't missing anything. Even so, he automatically put a hand behind him to feel for the familiar bulge of his computer, just to be sure.

The sky was clear, and he could see both the sun and the moon in the sky. All he could think of, however, was what lay beyond those two celestial bodies. He waved skyward.

"This is our last morning together," he said with a smile on his face, eyes still looking up at the sky as he crossed the blessedly empty street towards Mission Control.

He heard a lone car coming towards him, but the light was red, so he didn't bother to look over to it. Until it sounded dangerous close, that is. Even then, he felt it before he saw it. He heard the screeching of brakes, but it clearly hadn't been enough, as he felt a crushing impact on his left hip. He hurtled onto the top of the car, rolling over the hood and stopping at the windshield.

A scream had escaped his lips upon impact, but now he was just muttering a steady stream of curses under his breath. The car had managed to slow down enough to avoid killing him, but he still felt a sharp pain on his hip, as well as smaller throbs of it on his knees and elbows. He lay on the hood of the car for a few seconds, trying to catch his breath and steeling himself against the pain.

Slowly, he felt able to move again, and he began to let himself slither off the car. A pair of hands supported his descenent, keeping ahold of him while he gingerly tried to stand on his own.

"Oh my gosh I'm so sorry, are you okay?" a female voice asked, sounding incredibly distressed. Matias doubted the concern in her voice was for him, however. She was probably more worried about her insurance.

Matias turned to look at her. She was dark-haired, dark-eyed, plump of lips, and absolutely gorgeous.

"You ruined what was supposed to be a perfect day," Matias said stupidly, looking through her almost as if she wasn't there.

The young woman seemed distressed by this. "I'm so sorry-" she began.

"It's fine," Matias said, regaining himself somewhat. "Just give me all your info. I want to get this over with, I'm going to be late enough as it is because of you."

A few minutes later, and she had dropped him off right by the front door of his destination. He was still in pain, and could only walk with a slow limp. He slowly made his way through the front door, where he was confronted with odd looks, raised eyebrows, and document examination that saw so many roving eyes between the papers and himself he was forced to roll his own.

Finally, he made his way to where he assumed his other coworkers seemed to be waiting. They were both reading something, and seemed to not be talking to each other. Pained as he was, and angry that he was late, he was inclined to do the same. He walked to the nearest chair and descended into it like an old man who could barely move. It chafed at his pride, and he hoped the others weren't paying too much attention.

"Oh, I'm so proud of you, Zara." An middle-aged woman hushed, wrapping her arms round her daughter and pulling her in close. She held onto the embrace for a long time - too long - sobbing into the younger woman's neck as she tried to catch her breath. "I just can't believe I will never see you again." She spoke inbetween tears.

"Just think of me as the hero for humanity." The daughter joked, pulling away from the embrace to wipe away her mothers tears. It was the only way she could really get through any emotional situation, by cracking a joke and laughing it off. She felt a lump in her throat, looking around her parents living room where she grew up. It didn't feel real. This would be the last time she saw this room. Her eyes locked with the fireplace, all of her sports trophies from when she was a child still sat atop the mantelpiece, collecting dust.

"Right, let's go through for dinner. Everyone's here to wish you goodbye!" The mother insisted, pushing Zara away from the fireplace and into the dining room. The last supper.

The next morning had been a rush. Zara Ravenna had gotten up early in order to fit in a gym session before she left. The meal that her mother had cooked the night before had been lovely, but had bloated the soon-to-be-commander. She couldn't turn up to her first day looking sluggish. So she got out of bed at 5:00 a.m, ate breakfast, drank some pre-workout before making her way over to one of the gyms a couple of streets down. She wasn't that well known, mainly because she'd only been back in her hometown for a couple of weeks. The dark-haired woman was used to the makeshift gyms in the military, so this was like a holiday.

Once she was done, she showered, changed and grabbed her black duffel bag. Waving goodbye to her parents who watched her go from the doorway, they only moved back inside when she'd turned the corner and was out of sight. The Commander had to be there earlier then the others, she assumed for some sort of personal briefing.

Time: 8:12 a.m.

Great. Her first day and she was going to be late to her medical examination. She was sure she'd be scrutinised for her lateness, even though she had been in the building since 7. When she arrived in the waiting room, she was relieved to see that three other people were sat down. 3 men. She recognised each of them, having been given some information about her crew beforehand. There should be another woman too, she remembered her specifically because she was relieved that it wasn't going to be an all-male crew. Not that she minded working with men, it would just be nice to have another female there too. She assumed Michelle was probably with the doctor, that would make sense.

"Hi." The dark-haired woman announced, not really aiming the greeting at anyone specific. "I'm Zara Ravenna, I'm going to be your Commander." She introduced herself, smiling politely at the three. She stood like a soldier - her legs were shoulder width apart, her hands clasped in front of her and her posture was straight. Her hair was still loose, hanging just past her shoulders.

Michelle would have loved to simply sit there and read, and be left alone for a while, but it seemed like it wasn't meant to be. Every time she managed to focus on her reading, something came up to distract the machinist. And at every time, her reaction was the same - an impatient sigh and then turning her attention back to what she had been previously doing. Michelle did stop reading, though, when someone came in walking with a slight, but noticeable, limp. She watched as the man walked to a chair and sat down, and took a moment to wonder what role he should be assigned with for the expedition, before turning her attention back to the material in her hands.

Once again, it wasn't meant to be. Just as Michelle was getting to an interesting part of her reading, she was interrupted yet again. And this time, there was no way to simply acknowledge it and go back to reading. This time, she would have to stop it for good and go see the doctor. Just great, Michelle thought to herself. Of all of the people present, she had to be the first one. Awesome. She would have loved to be the last, or at least not the first, so she would know what to expect. Oh, well, she would just have to hope the doctor wouldn't be a creep. Or worse, want to make small talk while he proceeded to her examination.

While she walked behind the man who had come to ask her to see the doctor, Michelle looked at the floor. It was, hopefully, an easy way to make it pretty clear that she wasn't interested in making small talk. And she had been asked to provide a clean bill of health when she had signed up for this stupid mission, no reason to have another doctor examine her now. Michelle could have told her current employers that she was just as healthy now as she had been a few weeks ago. Still, it came with the territory, so she would have to suck it up.

As soon as she saw the doctor, Michelle's mind screamed 'you've gotta be kidding me', but Michelle displayed no other reaction other than pursing her lips. After a sigh and closing her eyes for a minute, Michelle finally resumed her usual neutral behavior. "Good morning, Doctor", she greeted, her voice inexpressive. After another look at the man, Michelle completed, trying to make clear she wasn't willing to make too much small talk. "What should I do?", she asked, standing up in an almost military posture. There wasn't really a reason for that, as Michelle was a civilian. It was just an instinctive way of positioning herself, derived of her discomfort.

Christopher was a bit surprised, and even slightly irritated that some of the people were late. Was this a sign of things to come? Two of the team members weren’t here, and it was 8 o’clock. At least Michelle and Peter were here on time. Though they all seemed to be in their own bubble. Christopher had already put away his datapad, and looked around. He decided to do what he enjoyed the most, observing the people around him. He sometimes loved just sitting on a park bench, observing the people that passed by, wondering who they were.

Michelle was curious. He read about her. She was a machinist, and a talented one at that. She was someone they would need, absolutely. She seemed to be heavy into her reading, and almost seemed to not want to engage with him. He couldn’t tell if that were really the case, but he had a feeling. However, this was only further confirmed when she was called by the doctor to come in. She looked down to the floor, like a student who didn’t want to be picked by her teacher.

The nurse came out again, and seemed to give notice to Peter, who was sleeping in his seat. The nurse asked the man a few questions--but then ignored Christopher. Curious, he thought. He wondered if the nurse knew Christopher was part of the team, but figured it didn’t matter too much. Christopher just went back to observing the people as they came in. He would be called when it was time.

Peter was an odd one as a choice. A bit older than the rest, and this was always a concern when starting a colony, youth being a vital commodity, but he wasn’t old. He was the chef. When Christopher first heard of the role, it struck him as odd. Of such a small team, to have a dedicated chef was more of a luxury than a necessity. Still, the man provided a few key skills, like botany. He wasn’t just in charge of cooking the meals, but the food in general--which made more sense as a vital skill. Christopher knew he would be working closely with Peter on this mission, trying to find the best places to grow food so they could be self-sustainable. They were only bringing so much food. Hopefully he and Peter would get along.

Then Matias arrived, a bit late. Also, sporting a quite sizeable limp. Perhaps the limp was the reason for being late, but Christopher was making an assumption. Matias, however, acted as if everything was okay. Christopher raised an eyebrow. This was going to be the Communications officer, and was also an electrical engineer. Another key member. How did Matias get the limp, and would the injury or problem keep the man from flying? A bit harsh to ground someone for an injury, but if having an injury would endanger the lives of the other crew members, it was important to take note of.

Christopher began to tap his foot. He couldn’t help grow a bit impatient, especially since not even the commander had arrived, Zara. He waited, and wondered, and finally twelve minutes and thirty-six seconds after eight (he was checking his watch) the commander showed up. She was hard to ignore as she walked into the place, both beautiful and strong. Though she looked more like a military leader than a colonist with the way she held herself. He knew she had a military background, and he found it curious that a military person was chosen to lead the mission. Only missions of the early space race used military to fill their ranks. As time went on, less and less military went to space. Now space and exploration was for the scientists and engineers. He knew she had some skills in repairing, but he hoped that she would have enough skills to help make-up for the lack of science she was bringing to the team--and for her tardiness. He had been a consultant on many missions in the past, and if he had chosen the team, she wouldn’t have even been considered. But it wasn’t his choice, so he would have to live with it.

He wanted to grill her for being late, but she was his superior, and he didn’t want to come off as abrasive (as many have called him--usually opting for a different word), so he only bit his lip. When she introduced herself, he nodded to her, and got up. “Nice to meet you, Commander. I’m Christopher Toa, the Geologist.” He held out his hand for a handshake. He half wondered if she was expecting him to salute instead, with the way she was standing.

Peter drifted in and out of deep sleep, losing track of time. Sometimes he became vaguely aware of the goings-on in the waiting room. Occasionally there were footsteps or shadows that crossed his eyes, and occasionally heard voices. Otherwise, it was strangely quiet besides a distant hum of some fan or machine.

A voice directed at Peter broke through the vague shadows and fuzzy world in his mind. A hand shook his shoulder, fully bringing him into consciousness.

"Hmm?" Peter mumbled, squinting and lifting himself from the seat. His shoulder felt stiff from where it had been resting against the wall. He rolled it to ease the discomfort as he turned to look at the man who had woke him up.

Peter was asked if he needed anything. I need some more goddamn sleep, his irritable brain thought, but he knew that wasn't right to say.

"I'm fine. Thank you." The response was automatic, but as Peter said it, he realized that his tongue was dry. He had probably drooled on the seat like an idiot. It was a great way to introduce himself to his coworkers. And they were the kind that you couldn't really escape, either.

Before he made a request, Peter looked over to the people who had arrived at an actually reasonable time. He was vaguely aware of their faces, but he couldn't attach names or personalities to them. Two of them were reading, and the man sitting right next to him looked like he was in some sort of discomfort. Whether it was mental or physical, Peter couldn't tell.

"Some water, maybe," Peter looked up at the man, attempting to give a small smile but failing due to lack of effort.

Peter hadn't even questioned who the man was, and only realized he was some sort of doctor's assistant or nurse when he turned to the reading woman and told her that it was her turn to be examined.

Peter bristled slightly. If it was just a physical checkup, it was fine by him. He didn't mind being poked and prodded; it was easy for him to think of it as an impersonal experience. Any line of questioning, however, made him defensive and frustrated. He hated talking about himself or trying to explain himself, especially anything involving the mind. He believed it was something more private, not something to be casually shared with a doctor.

With the exception of mental illness, of course. Which Peter did not have, according to the information he provided when he signed up for the trip. There was no need to go through the process again.

Someone arrived late. It was the commander, according to the way she introduced herself. Peter mentally congratulated her for her stellar leadership thus far. He gave her a casual two-finger wave.

"Peter," he gave a simple introduction, turning away as Christopher took the floor.

Now fully awake, Peter wondered why the group seemed so standoffish to each other. Of course, Peter wasn't one to judge. He wasn't a people person, or even a friendly person, but the atmosphere felt much more like any doctor's waiting room rather than a trip that involved the rest of their lives.

He wished he'd brought something to read.

“The rest of the crew has shown up,” Shawn remarked in passing while Dr. T pretended to look over the machinist’s file. It was all in an effort to make her uncomfortable for his own research and notes. All taken mentally and with a few seemly random sketches on the side of one of the pages. For what might have felt like several long, drawn out moments, that was all he did before he closed the file and looked up at her with a warm and possibly too friendly of a smile.

“Reach down and touch your toes for me please and make sure that you do not bend your knees,” the remark made with a nod as he strode over to the window to look out at the world below. It was all synthetic, even the view. The window no more than a screen with a holographic image that would give the illusion of what the world could look like if things had been better. Perhaps, how the world would look like if they were to succeed on the new planet. “Now,” without looking back to her. “Touch your nose with just your index finger of each hand, alternating between the two. Then I want to hop up on to the exam table and start saying your ABCs backwards.”

All a bunch of ridiculous notions that had not real medical baring, but for him it was a matter of checking on her mental facilities. An annoying game of how much can she take before she loses her cool. “Shawn!” the nurse summoned in a very rude tone. Though the man seemed to not mind it as he showed up with the glass of water Peter had requested.

“Yeah?”

“Again, same as before.”

“Alright.”

It was rather cryptic, though it was understood between both parties as they parted ways without much more.

Back out in the waiting room, Peter was given his water. The battered man was asked to follow him to the back to be seen immediately for his injuries. Then the commander was greeted and asked if she needed anything, while again ignoring Christopher.
