The Puppeteer

The house was quiet. Very quiet. He could imagine that his guests were probably still out cold. The man showed a soft smile, staring at his monitors. There they were, sleeping like babies. It was so easy to lure them in, knock them out and leave them in their rooms. Once they woke up, he would have to start with the usual routine. He wondered about how long these would resist. Some of them died too quickly to be of any entertainment or learn any lessons. These three might have a chance. Who knew, though? Of course, the others around the house would help them, but he might have to rig the game in their favor. Give Jim a few more meds, deliver some mildly nice food to Jenny's kitchen. Not more than that, though. They had to learn their own lessons, and he couldn't spoon feed them that.

Starting point for the characters

Whenever they happened to wake up, each character would be on something soft. At a glance, they could notice that they were in a bedroom. The roof could be seen if they looked up, and the sound of bird wings could be heard, indicating that some kind of large bird - ravens, by the sound of it - was flying and landing on the roof above. Very near the roof, each room had a tiny window, but it was impossible to reach and, even if they could, it was too small for anyone to slip out of it.

Other than the bed, each room had little to offer in terms of furniture. A bedside table, and a small desk with a chair, and nothing more than that.

On the desk, there was an old radio, and on one of the top corners, what seemed like a security camera could be seen.

Jenna Osbourne had no idea where she was. She didn't remember how she ended up here. The details were a little groggy to her. She remembered going out with her friends. One of her oldest friends was getting married. They were celebrating Ally's last night of 'freedom'. The wedding! Had she missed it? Ally would be so **** if she did. Especially since Jenna was one of the bridesmaids.

Jenna was laying on something soft. A bed maybe? Did she go home with some guy at the bar? Jenna didn't remember any certain guy. She wasn't the type that usually went home with a man at a bar. And she was always careful with her drinks. She sat up and looked around the room. It seemed to be a bedroom. It had a bed and a little table and desk. She looked up and could hear birds.

'Where the hell am I?' Jenna thought to herself as she stood up. She walked over to the door to try the door but it was locked.

She banged on it and saw there was a radio on the desk and camera in the corner of the wall. What kind of sickos had a cameras in a bedroom? Probably no one Jenna wanted to get to know better.

"Hello?!"

Jenna yelled and banged on the locked door again.

Alex's eyes flew open as he felt the vertigo of falling, and braced himself with his palms on the ground just in time before he tipped over on the chair he had been sleeping on.

Wait... I fell asleep on a chair? he asked himself, thoughts still groggy. He sat up and looked around the room. Where the hell am I? he wondered, rubbing his eyes as if to focus in on the unfamiliar setting.

The room was small but high, with a tiny window near the ceiling and only a bed with a chair and desk for furnishing. He could hear ravens cawing and scratching on the roof above. He had definitely never been here before.

"Uh..." Alex said, loud enough for anyone nearby to hear. There was no response apart from the birds outside.

He tried to remember the previous night. He wouldn't put it past himself to have drunk himself into a stupor and gone off with someone or wandered off into the woods somewhere, it had happened before. The thing is, he didn't really remember having drank very much. He had been out with a group of friends, celebrating the news that one of them was about to be a father. He remembered drinking a couple of beers, nothing more...

Alex groaned as he began to stretch his body out. Worry hadn't set itself into his mind yet; he was sure that whatever had happened must have been completely innocent. Once his body felt limber and alive, he walked over to the door and tried to turn the knob, to no avail. He was locked inside.

Weird... haven't been in too many homes with rooms that can be locked from the outside, he thought. He turned back around to face the room and observed it more carefully. There was a radio on the desk, and what looked to be a camera from one of the corners of the room. Alex waved his hands in front of the camera.

"Anyone there?" he asked.

He thought he heard distant banging from somewhere else in the house, along with what could have been muffled screaming. Concern crept into the back of his mind as he grabbed the radio from the table and turned it over. He then walked to the door and began knocking on it with one hand, firmly, as he called out, "Hey, anyone out there?"

Ella stirred to the sounds of birds outside, rolling over to cuddle into her pillow for a moment longer. Had she woken up early and her alarm hadn't gone off yet? She hoped so, it was always nice knowing that there was extra time in bed before she had to get up for work. Or was it the weekend? Being half asleep, she couldn't remember what day it was.

A hand moved under her pillow in search of her phone, but it wasn't there. Strange. She always slept with it under her pillow, so the alarm was muted. Blue eyes opened slowly to look properly. Wait. This wasn't her bedroom. The 25-year-old shot up, heart racing as she looked around. A room she had never seen before in her life. How did she get here? What was she doing last night? A hand moved to caress her head, feeling a headache coming on from the sudden shock.

The teacher climbed out of bed, looking down at herself. She was fully dressed - a white blouse and blue jeans. The kind of thing she wore to work. Ella pushed the hair out of her face, rushing over to the door to leave. She would work out why she was here later, right now she just wanted to go home. After trying the door knob, blood rushed from her face as she realised she was locked inside.

"What?" She muttered to herself, trying it again but to no avail. She slammed her body against the door, once, twice. No luck, she wasn't strong enough to budge it even slightly. "Okay." She mumbled, turning around to look around the room. There must be a key somewhere. Her eyes locked on the bedside table, rushing over to it she tried to open the top drawer. It pulled open with ease, but to the woman's disappointment, only dust occupied it.

In an attempt to stay calm, she stood up straight, shutting her eyes momentarily and taking a deep breath. That's when she heard the sounds of others. It was muffled, she couldn't really understand what was being said but she ran back to the door, slamming her hand hard against the wood and shouting out too.

"Hello? Can you hear me?" She called out, trying the door again. "I can't, I can't get out! Can you try it on your side? Where am I?"

All of the doors were locked, and they would not budge with any attempts to open or break them down. Whoever had locked them in there, the person had pretty good doors, and pretty good locks. There would be another reaction, though.

As soon as they tried to talk to someone, the radio on the desk would crackle and come to life, as though it had a will of its own. If someone had the presence of mind to look, they could notice there was a tape inside the radio.

After some crackling, a male voice would finally sound from the tape.

"Hello. My name is... well, you can call me the Puppeteer for now. I want to play a game with you. You’re locked in a house with many rooms, and in each of them there are tests waiting for you. The tests will bring you closer to your freedom, but you will have to risk your life to pass them. Once you have passed all of the tests, you are free to go. There are others in the house, and I advise you to cooperate with them so you can all walk away free. You are now in the only safe room in the house - yours. I advise you to keep whatever you find here, as it is the only place where nothing can disappear. Strange things happen in this house. Well, the time for your first test will come soon. You may leave your room now, and explore the house. The first test will be held at the kitchen. It is on the ground floor, and you will find that it is the only other unlocked room... for now. See you later!".

Once those words were finished, the radio crackled again and fell silent.

A moment later, the door would unlock of its own accord, leaving the room open for the occupants to go out to the hallway of the floor they were at right now.

The door would not budge. It was heavy and solid. She realized that after a few minutes of banging on it. Jenna's boyfriend built houses. Kenny would tell her there was no way to break down a door like this. People used doors like this to make sure no broke into their house or break out...She swallowed hard when she saw the lock on the door. Another thing Kenny would have told her paranoid people used.

****! Jenna thought. Did anyone even know she was missing? What time as it? she wondered. Was it too early for Ally's wedding? Kenny knew she'd be out late with Ally and the other girls. They weren't living together yet, he wouldn't realize she hadn't came home. No one would know she hadn't come home. No one would know she was missing until it was time for the wedding.

Jenna smacked the door in anger. A move she regretted because it made her hand hurt. That's when she heard other people, or at least, she thought she did. A male and another female.

"Hello?! I-"

Before Jenna could say more, the radio came to life.

"What the hell?"

What kind of sick s.o.b was this Puppeteer person? She felt like she was in some kind of horror movie.

"Let me go you butthole!"

She yelled at the voice in the radio.

"People are going to know I'm missing soon and then...."

She trailed off when she saw the door open. 'Go to the kitchen,' she thought. She cautiously stepped out of the room and looked around.

No one answered Alex's call from the other side of the door, no one except for the other people who were banging and calling out from other rooms. His brow furrowed in worry as he began to realize that he was not alone in being trapped inside the house. But why?

He dropped the radio in surprise as it sputtered to life, and a voice began to speak. He knelt down by the radio, refusing to touch it as if it had shocked him, and listened as someone who called themselves The Puppeteer began to instruct them on what to do. Alex didn't like what he was hearing. It sounded like nothing good could come of being trapped inside the house. Thoughts of breaking out began to circle in his mind, but something told him that would be a bad idea. The Puppeteer's words resonated in his mind. "Strange things happen in this house..."

The voice instructed them all to go to the kitchen for their first "test", and the door swung open. Alex took a step towards it, but before he did, he turned to take one last look at the camera in the corner of the room. He stared at it for a couple of seconds before sighing, shaking his head, and thrusting his right middle finger at it. Then he walked out the door.

He looked up and down the hallway, unsure in what direction to head. He knew he had to go to the ground floor, but he wasn't sure whether it was to the right or left. He saw another woman had also stepped out of her room.

"Heading to the kitchen too?" he asked her, his voice somewhat flat.

Ella span round as the radio came to life, pressing her back against the door firmly as she watched the device. She listened carefully, brows furrowing at the Puppeteers words. Play a game? Risk her life? What was this? Why her? So many questions whizzed round her head that she knew wouldn't be answered - at least not straight away.

As the Puppeteer neared the end of his introduction, the woman slowly stepped towards the radio. Cautious as to what will happen at the end of him speaking. She bent down, watching as the tape span inside the machine. When he had finished, she pushed the eject button and removed the tape, looking at it carefully. She didn't know what she was going to achieve from this action but it made her curious.

For now, there wasn't anything she could do with it. She felt the need to keep hold of this though. Eyes hovered over the camera briefly, knowing that she was being watched, she'd have to attempt a sleight of hand. She bent down, positioning herself so the table the radio was on was between her and the camera. She faked putting the tape back inside but instead slid it into her pocket. She was curious as to whether there would be a new tape in the radio when she returned from the kitchen. If so, she'd know that this Puppeteer - or someone - can easily access her room. Perhaps a set of master keys or something? For now, it was all just speculation in her mind.

She heard voices outside the now unlocked door and stood up swiftly, heading towards it and pulling it open. When she stepped out into the hall she hovered in the doorway momentarily. "Hi." She spat out, cringing a bit at the choice of her first word to the strangers. She wasn't really sure what to say, clearly they were all in the same position. These two must have been the source of the banging she had heard previously. "To the kitchen, then?" She suggested, stepping out properly and shutting the door. She wanted this nightmare to be over as soon as possible.

The Pupeteer

The man was watching his new puppets through his screens and smiling. Ah, new puppets were always so entertaining. They screamed, yelled and demanded. In time, they would be begging and pleading. Eventually, though, they would learn their lesson. Or die trying. Oh, well. Hopefully these ones would be smarter than the last group.

He chuckled a little when Jenna called him an butthole. That would be a fun puppet, he was sure. He'd better keep a closer eye on her before she ended up joining Jack in his misguided revolution.

The young man in another room had showed him a middle finger, which was also very amusing. The Pupeteer felt tempted to say something, but decided against it. Not yet. For now, he would just let them get used to the house and meet up with the others. There would be time for everything. It wasn't like they were about to go anywhere, after all.

The second woman seemed a lot more peaceful. She had taken out the tape, for whatever reason. He wondered what she was thinking, but, for now, he was not about to talk to her either. She would have to endure enough talking when she met Jenny, after all. Maybe he should give the girl some peace and quiet before the storm, he thought with a fond smile.

Down in the kitchen, the only unlocked room for now, a young woman frowned, looking up at the camera. "Not again", she protested, hearing the calm voice that had come from the tape reply back to her. "Yes, again, Jenny. I know you will take good care of this group, as you always do". The young woman crossed her arms and sighed. "I will, but just because I don't want any of them to die", she replied, shaking her head and going back to the stove and looking into the oven where a blueberry pie was almost ready.

'I am not alone here.' Jenna told herself as she stepped out of the room. She saw a man and a woman step out of nearby rooms. They looked how she felt. She wondered how they all got here. And who the voice was on the radio. It made her angry thinking about that. She didn't want to be someone's...'puppet'. That's the best word describe the whole situation. She felt like she was a puppet on someone's string.

"Yeah, to the kitchen."

Jenna said in agreement to the two people she just met.

"I'm Jenna."

She told the two people. She figured she might as well know their names. After all, they were all in this together. Maybe they could work together and get the hell out of this place.

Alex let out a small chuckle when the other woman came around to join them with a simple "Hi". His smile didn't linger for long, however.

When Jenna introduced herself, Alex opened his mouth and closed it again, feeling that his introduction would have sounded strange given the circumstances.

"I'm Alex," he said after a brief moment of hesitation. "Wish we could have all met somewhere better." His eyes darted around the ceiling, his mouth slightly curved with distaste.

He nodded at the suggestion to moved towards the kitchen. "Yeah, it seems like our only real option right now," he muttered almost underneath his breath. The lack of freedom felt oppressively restricting to him and was already making him feel slighly irritated.

He walked at a rapid pace, not because he wanted to be ahead, but because it was his natural pace for walking. Though he did admimt he held a small shred of curiosity to what the Puppeteer had in store for them at the kitchen.

Once they arrived, he saw it wasn't anything that seemed particularly remarkable. It seemed like an ordinary kitchen, with a dining table looking like it was halfway set up for dinner. Alex caught the warm, rich smell of pie wafting in the air.

The one strange thing was the girl. There was a girl with a red gown there, looking at them as they entered. She was blonde and pretty, but Alex felt strangely apprehensive. There was an aura about her that creeped him out.

He crossed his arms. "Who are you?" he asked, trying to maintain a friendly tone to his voice rather unsuccessfully.

"Ella." The teacher responded, following after the pair as they walked down to the kitchen. Her eyes scanned the house as they moved, wanting to remember small details about each nook and cranny. She wasn't really sure why this was her instinct, but she was trying to keep herself calm. She wanted to feel in control.

When they arrived in the kitchen, the smell wafted in her face and made her mouth water. It made the woman realise how hungry she was, her stomach rumbling quietly as she eyed the over. But no, she couldn't accept food from this person, could she? If she didn't, she'd simply starve, but she didn't know what was in the food they were feeding her.

Ella stayed silent, watching the blondes reaction to Alex's question.

The young blonde in the kitchen didn't seem surprised to see the three strangers. She didn't seem pleased either, though. It wasn't that they were unwelcome. It was more that she really didn't want them to be here. Oh, well. Hopefully she could keep them alive.

When the man asked her who she was, the woman answered his question right her way. Her voice was very quiet and polite, and didn't have any of the apparent intimacy it had used when talking to the Puppeteer. "I'm Jenny Wallis", she started. "And I don't really have anything to do with the fact that you are all in here".

After this remark, she once again checked the oven, and removed the pie from it. "I would bet you haven't really eaten after you came in here", she started again, while slicing the pie. "I'll take two slices for the Firewoods, but you can feel free to eat as well, there should be enough for everyone". Plating two slices, the woman looked at everyone. "You should meet them later", she stated, before making sure she wouldn't drop the plates and exiting the kitchen. The door behind her would lock itself through some mechanism, much like the ones in their bedrooms had locked and unlocked themselves.

As soon as the door was locked, the male's voice sounded again. "I would prefer that you would not starve to death", the man remarked. "Jenny will not poison you - she wouldn't hurt a fly. And it would be in your best interest to get on her good side".

After these words, the sound crackled and faded into silence.
