Drina Callaghan - Pack Residence - Upstairs

"Oh, Gods", the red-haired woman who was standing outside at a balcony murmured. Despite the bitter cold, she was wearing nothing but her nightgown. It was late, probably around 2 or 3 in the morning, but she couldn't sleep. Some soft marks in her arms told a story of having been injured recently. She was not the only one, though. Not too long ago, a wandering pack had passed by, and hers had needed to defend their territory. It seemed as though more and more packs were moving out of their own lands lately. Of course, they couldn't simply allow them to stay. It didn't work that way. If they stayed, they would probably try and take over, and Drina wouldn't have that. She wished they didn't need to resort to infighting, though. There were enough foes to worry about outside their community. Now, the other pack had lost a couple members, and theirs had to deal with virtually every member being injured.

The only ones who had not been hurt were her siblings, and Drina was glad they had not. She would have ripped someone's throat out if someone had harmed them. They were still too young to get involved in all the mess, at least in her eyes. She probably worried way too much, but that came with the territory. She was their parent figure, after all.

And there was the uneasy feeling of another kind of danger that had been bothering her. She couldn't really put her finger on it. It was just the feeling that they weren't safe. Maybe they shouldn't isolate themselves so much, she though to herself. Maybe they should stay closer to society and see what was going on.

Feeling a sense of urgency, a sense that she had to do something right away - and also feeling too cold to stay outside any longer -, Drina walked back into the room she shared with her mate and sat on the bed. She laid a cold hand on his shoulder and shook it softly, before speaking in a tense whisper.

"Ali... wake up. I want to, I need to talk to everyone. Now".

Blood and the heavy stench of pain in the air made it nearly impossible to think straight let alone focus on anything but the next second. Their world was no longer one of peace and safety. There was change on the wind and with it came the blood shed they were subjected to in this moment. By the time the dust settled, Alick held the throat of one of the interlopers within his claw and in one violent moment ripped the flesh clean from the body.

Head thrown back to howl his victory, the rest of the pack ran off to lick their wounds while Alick and his pack did the same, though without having to lug away their dead too.

The days that followed the pack was in a state and not a state that was a good one either. On edge and jumpy, their wounds allowed to slowly heal while they tried to recover emotionally along with the physical. This left the Alpha troubled in more ways than one, as he wanted to keep his pack safe but that meant more fighting. So, it was no surprise that when his mate roused him from his trouble sleep it was relatively quick. The nightmare he had been having as he watched her die over and over had been enough to make him glad to be awoken.

“Hmm…wha…” the last of sleep clung to his mind and body for a few extra moments before he finally nodded. Hand allowed to reach out and touch her leg with a small smile, “Alright, love. Though you are going to have to put on something more than that or there will be very little talking and a lot more roaming eyes.” Tone held a teasing note, though he did make the effort to push up into a sitting position and lean over to give her a kiss before he made the final move out of bed. The loosely worn boxers were already being pushed down before he disappeared into the bathroom that connected to their room. “I’m sure most of them aren’t sleeping or are sleeping terribly so I’m sure they won’t mind being woken up,” he called from the bathroom.

Emerson lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling. He had all but given up with trying to sleep at this point, it was too quiet. He felt that if he fell asleep something would happen, something that needed his attention or help. Not that he would be much use on this night, the slash across his torso would prevent him from being able to fight all too well.

The Beta pulled himself out of bed, groaning quietly to himself as the injury burned. It was too hot in his room, he needed some air. He limped over to the doors leading to his balcony, unlocking them and stepping out into the fresh air. He inhaled deeply - which didn't help his cut, but then nothing seemed to.

Eyes flitted across the treeline, watching as if he was expecting something - someone - to jump out. If so he'd be ready. He could vault this thing easy, it might hurt when he landed but so be it. For a second, he thought he did see movement. Tired eyes squinted to look out properly, hands firmly gripping the fence, ready to pounce. He decided it was nothing after a few long moments of full focus. Paranoid. A word he was accustomed to being associated with. The man eased his grip, lifting one hand to push his long hair behind his back. He wondered if anyone else was struggling to sleep. Probably everyone. He considered going to see the other Beta - Katrina. Though he didn't want to wake her if she'd managed to actually fall asleep. The pack needed all the rest they could get.

No. For these last few hours of night he would stand on the balcony, letting the cold breeze hit his skin as he kept a lookout for any trouble.

Katrina had spent most of the night tossing and turning. Normally, she was known to be a sound sleeper, but recent events had her on edge; she was constantly on the lookout, her nose seeming to have a mind of its own, seeking out scents that did not belong here naturally. She was use to high tension. Every time something had everyone on edge, she thought back to her childhood. Her father had raised her to be instinctive. There was never time for hesitation, especially in a situation where decisions needed to be made quick.

These days, quick decisions were literal life and death.

Stretching, Katrina sat up and looked outside, wondering if some fresh air would do her good. From the small sounds she picked up, she was not the only one awake. Sleep came very little these days; the most Katrina had gotten over the past few weeks was maybe more than twenty hours altogether; last night, she had only slept for two. If she started moving around surely nobody would be bothered by her. On the other hand, she wondered if the movement was a sign.

She suddenly found herself even more on edge, and rolled out of bed. If everyone was up and about, she doubted she would be able to convince herself to get any more sleep anyway. She opened her window and leaned outside, taking in the cool air. It felt good to get out some of the stuffiness, which had filled the room so suddenly. Inhaling and letting out a slow exhale, feeling her shoulders slowly ease up from being so tense.

Part of her expected to catch the scent of another wolf; at times, she could have sworn there was a sort of phantom lingering there, waiting for her to pick it up. But there was nothing there at all.

Katrina decided to leave the window open to keep a breeze in her room.

She wrapped herself in her robe and went out into the hall.

Drina felt a little guilty when Alick woke up. She knew how stressed he was after their encounter with another pack. They all were, but she knew that her mate, being the Alpha, was more worried than everyone else. He had to keep the pack safe and together, and Drina understood it well, as she was just as worried.

Relaxing when Alick seemed to wake up and realize he was home, Drina smiled when he told her to put on something more. "Very well, love, I will", she replied, shaking her head. "But you know nobody would even dare to look at the Alpha's mate", she completed, kissing him back and pinching his cheek very gently.

As Alick went to the bathroom, Drina stretched for a moment or two, and then went to change into her usual clothes - dark pants and a white shirt. She would eventually wear a dress, but only for formal occasions. For a simple conversation with the pack, that would do.

While she changed, Drina heard Alick's comment. He was probably right, everyone was still on edge after the recent events. "I bet you are right", she replied, finishing getting dressed and deciding that she would go bare foot. "I guess I will check on them. Will you meet me downstairs?", Drina asked, waiting on Alick's answer.

She thought it might make things move faster if she made sure that everyone was awake and gathered before Alick came down. It was something Drina often did when she was stressed or nervous. It was as though the Alpha female felt that, by moving things along, she would have some control over the current situation.

For now, though, she simply waited, feeling restless and hoping everyone would agree to have a conversation.

“No need,” Alick replied between the splashing of water on his face. The ice cold from the facet, a welcome addition to helping the Alpha chase the chill the nightmare seemed to have left on his soul. “Listen,” is all he said. His own actions paused to allow for the best possible chance to hear what he knew to be there. Life. The sound of restless souls that stirred to and fro, within the walls of the manner that housed the pack. Sprawling could have been a word used, had they proper land to expand. As it was the pack was forced to dwell among the humans, creatures…monsters really in and of themselves that would have loved the chance to kill anyone of them.

These were bitter words from a man whose father was a human and whom he visited when the time allowed. But, like many of the pack who had human parentage, they were but a few in the sea of many. The many who hated and killed. Spilled blood not for food, not because they needed to but because they wanted it. Discussing, really, but until such a time as their numbers were larger and there could be brokered a peace Alick did not see this future ever coming to past. It caused the young man concern for the future of not only his pack but the children that he might be blessed enough to be the father of someday.

Another bitter thought wiggled its way into his mind and he scoffed to himself. Would the wolf or the man for that matter, want to have children at a time like this? When packs that had kept to themselves and honored the territory they had claimed, now attacked and sought to kill to have what belong to him and his family. Is this the place for a family? Is this the time for one? A deep sigh was dragged from his lungs, shoulders allowed to slump for a second, only a second, as the weight of the world about the wolf felt nearly too much to bear. Then he heard the soft sound that was Draina’s breathing, familiar and warm. A comfort to both man and wolf who felt an instant wave of calm wash over his soul. Renewed and determined to always be there to hear that sound. To always be there to feel that breath against his skin when she whispered her love for him in the dead of night.

No one would take that from him. No one would take their home from them.

No one.

Downstairs, within the main communal space, the pack had been gathered. The pop and snap of the logs in the fire the only sounds for several moments as Alick just stood there. Button up shirt dyed dark blue some years ago though it was faded and torn in a few places. A favorite that he enjoyed wearing so much that Drina never had the chance to get it and mend it for him. The simple brown slacks held the same wear and tear as the shirt they were paired with, though the color in them had held up a bit better through the years. Barefoot, his toes absentmindedly stroked along the fine hardwood floors. It was a known fact within the pack that Alick would have preferred to live his entire life without the confinement of footwear. Whenever the man was home the shoes were off and left somewhere to be found when the society without demanded he wears them.

“The time is not as it once was,” the wolf finally began. “Once we were safe and secure within not only our homes but our lands as well. This city was our territory and we have kept it safe, protected it from both natural disasters and those made by man. Safe we have kept it so that we could have a place to call home,” now he paused to allow the pack to take in his words. Think back on their accomplishments and about all the blood and sweat they had poured into this city. How it was their home because they fought for it and kept it. “Now, we are under attack. More than once we had to fight to protect this city. To protect our home and family,” heat in his words as he spoke with a mixture of passion and anger. “Our bodies ache and our souls cry for relief, but we will not bend. Will we?” if no one answered right away, or not loud enough. “WILL WE?!” The question was barked with authority to try and get the response that he wanted to hear from his pack.

“This is our home and we will not lose it. No matter how many come, no matter what is going on, we will not lose our home!” With what he hoped to be a rousing and invigorating speech, the wolf stepped aside to allow his mate to take the floor and speak her mind as she was the reason behind this meeting in the first place.

Emerson had made his way downstairs as soon as he'd heard the call, not bothering to waste time getting dressed. He stood shirtless, though it was probably for the best as his injury would only be irritated by the rough material of his normal shirts. He stood near the front, eyes locked onto the fire as small embers roared behind the packs Alpha. The flames were fitting - they grew with Alick's speech, finally resting when he had concluded and most of the pack members were cheering in response.

The Beta wasn't one for riling up crowds, he preferred to sit back and listen to others. Though he knew if it ever came to it and he had to step in as Alpha, he'd need to entice the troops like Alick was doing now.

His eyes moved up to the two Alpha's when he assumed Drina was going to take over, wanting to make sure she knew he was listening with his full attention. What was going to be the packs tactics? He wondered if she would decide to go on an offensive, scare foes off with threats and intimidation. If it was down to Emerson, he'd much rather deal with the other packs by being diplomatic. Luckily, he didn't have much of a say at this point, he just had to nod and agree.

No matter what the decision, he would fight for his pack. Fight for his home and family.

Katrina listened intently to Alick’s speech, eyes glancing around to the other members of the pack every now and then.

It came as no surprise that everyone was concerned about the other pack. Katrina took Alick’s words as more than just a warcry. Her expression was stern and understanding, for she shared the pack’s sentiments, this was their home, they must not allow another pack to just waltz in here and try to take it from them. Too much blood had been shed already in order to get to where they were. She hoped that this pack would not give them any trouble, but was more than willing to continue putting her life on the line for this pack should a war break out.

“Nipping this in the bud is the best thing to do. We were here first, that’s all there is to it,” she said in reply, feeling the fire in her very being burning hotter. Judging from the looks on the others’ faces she was sure that no other words were needed at this moment, as everyone seemed to share the same sentiments. Why wouldn’t they? In her eyes, any who were not willing to fight for this pack were of no use. As Beta, she made sure that everyone stood as one and took notes when someone seemed to be lagging. So far everything looked good in her eyes.

Katrina always got fired up when it came to these little gatherings. There was a lot she wanted to get out right now. Sometimes it got her into trouble, having learned from past mistakes she keeps herself restrained as much as she can.

Whatever went down now, she would make sure she prepared. Perhaps later she would speak with Emerson about this, if she would even be given the chance. The two of them were chosen to be the Betas in the pack for a reason. Thinking on the fly was something both of them could handle very well in their own way, but when they sat down together… Well, it’s safe to say that this other pack was not going to have a good time here in the city.

Drina was just as nervous as Alick was. Her mate didn't have to tell her he was nervous. Part of being paired was having that connection, after all. And well, even if they had no connection at all, it was obvious that anyone would be nervous in that situation.

When Alick told her there was no need to wake the others, Drina held her breath and listened. They were not the only ones who were having a hard time sleeping. Drina wished everyone else did manage to sleep well, as she felt it was their job, as Alphas, to worry about most problems before the rest of the pack did. And still, Drina was grateful for the pack. They were all worrying together, and they would fix this situation together.

Once downstairs, Drina looked around at the pack and listened to Alick's words. He was right. They had given their sweat, blood and strength to keep their territory safe. Nobody else would take it from them.

Alick's question made Drina step over to his side and reply firmly. "We will not! This is our home, brothers and sisters, and we will not leave. We are not blood thirsty, but we will have the blood of those who dare to try and take what belongs to us!", she exclaimed, her voice firm and fire in her eyes.

After taking a deep breath and listening to Katrina's words, Drina looked at Alick, her lips pursed. She looked at her siblings, whom she had called in as listeners, to make sure they were paying attention. They were still young to go out in battle, but they were members of their pack, and needed to know what was happening, even if they didn't have a say yet.

Once sure everyone was listening, Drina spoke again.

"I say we regroup, prepare and make the next move", she stated, falling silent to listen to what others had to say and stepping close to Alick, a hand resting on his shoulder.

The pack was with him, more of a relief than Alick realized until that moment. Doubt was the destroyer of packs and empires. Both man and wolf needed to have complete and total trust in those that he called his friends and family. Especially, if one was to be a good leader. Efficient and competent in his actions, Alick would not be able to succeed without the comfort of knowing that his pack was with him. His mate, spoke of regrouping, which they had certainly done this night. But, the next step had to be more, had to be offensive rather than defensive.

“As with the ways of old, the ways of our people,” the Alpha began striding away from the assuring touch of his mate only so that he could pace while he thought. How many times had he done this before? Too many to count by the looks of the floor. The coloration faded, the wood slightly worn down in a line from the numerous times that the alpha had paced just like this before. Whenever there was something on his mind, or something to do the man moved. It helped him to gain control of all the crazy and scattered thoughts that went through is mind. Thoughts that were often converted into numbers and then back again.

Ever the accountant.

“We claimed this land as our own. Made the necessary bids and fought those who would have made it for their own. This land was empty of our kind and we changed that. Now, there are those who are ignoring customs and traditions. The very fabric of what makes our lives possible and what makes it so that we can live in this world without fear nor persecution. By violating the laws they endanger more than just us, they endanger every one of our kind. We have to put an end to it, here and now. We have to start the beginning of the end,” though the words had been spoken aloud and to the pack, Alick had yet to stop pacing and it would have appeared that he merely allowed his thoughts and concerns to be voiced aloud while he walked.

“We need to get word to the other packs. To our elders and alert them of the troubles. Then we are to go on a hunt,” at this he stopped to face his people with a smirk and hungry gleam in his eyes. “We know these woods better than anyone else. Though they attacked us and hurt us, it was because they caught us by surprise. We will not let that happen again. I want guards on day and night. I will lead a small group into the woods to see where they are hiding. Once we find them we will then make plans for an attack.” Here is where he paused to look about the room, “Is there anything that any of you can recall that would make this easier? Anything about how they smelled? How they moved? Any clue as to where they are from so that our hunt has the best chance for success…”

Emerson furrowed his eyebrows at the suggestion to go on the offensive, not necessarily agreeing with the decision but seeing where the Alpha was coming from. He knew they would most likely be successful, as Alick had said, they knew the woods better than any other pack. But still, there could be casualities, something that the Beta always wanted to avoid if possible.

The rest of the pack seemed to be fired up by his thoughts, each of them cheering and ready to fight for their family. It made the paranoid man smile, even through his worry. "I'll go with you in the small group." Emerson finally piped up after being quiet for so long. "No doubt I'll be able to pick up their scent once we're out there." He added, pushing his hair off his shoulders so it hung down his back. At least if they found members of the other pack he could try and talk to them before everyone started fighting again.

He turned his attention the Drina and Katrina, wondering if they were going to add to what he'd said. They would no doubt need to take a skilled tracker as well if they were going to have any hope of finding them.

A hunt? The word brought a smile to Katrina’s lips. It was always a good feeling whenever the pack was onboard with what she was thinking; in her mind, it was what family was all about, making sure, no matter what was said, everyone understood was necessary for the pack’s survival. She was prepared to speak if given some opposition, if she had room to encourage the others. When she first found her way into the pack, it had caused issues… Or was it because of her willingness to speak that she rose to the rank of Beta…?

“I, too, shall head out. We must not allow them to get too comfortable here,” she said with a smirk. Then she closed her eyes, arms folded over her chest, and retreated to her own thoughts again. How did they move? “Well, they didn’t seem to be very organized. From the way they moved, they just saw we weren’t on the defensive and took advantage of it. A spontaneous strike.” She said aloud. That night wasn’t something she wanted to remember personally. But, seeing as it was still fresh on her mind, playing over and over, she felt encouraged to speak up. “Disorganized, yet strong. Loose cannons…”

Was that dangerous, she wondered? The answer was yes, it was, but she wanted to hear what the others thought.

“Let’s hope they’re wise and haven’t already begun sticking their scent where it doesn’t belong,” Katrina added. “But if they have, it would make it easier for us.” Deep down, Katrina hoped she was right about them. If they could catch their scent, then surely they could pick up theirs as well. But if they weren’t exactly wise, then they wouldn’t have the advantage. Not to mention one of the other packs could rob them of their fun.
