It was a pleasant day, sunny, but not too hot, and Clearwater seemed ready for a fine day. The local Elementary School was holding a bake sale for art supplies and other items not covered by funding. That wasn't uncommon, as it happened once or twice a year, whenever necessary. As it was to be expected, mothers were volunteering to help their children, and everyone had been invited to the square near the local church. It was the best space the town could offer, after all.

As she did every year since her son had started school, Mrs. Parkinson, whose husband had died of a heart attack at only 32, had made a couple trays of cupcakes to help out. They all had different color frosting, and were chocolate flavored, so the children around were very interested in them.

Smiling at her son - Brad, a 6 year old with his mother's light blue eyes and almost blonde hair neither Mr. nor Mrs. Parkinson had -, the woman kissed the boy's cheek gently. "Go ask people if they want cupcakes, baby", she requested kindly, watching as the boy ran off. With a sigh, Mrs. Parkinson checked her trays. Just eight more to go. She loved volunteering for any activities for the school, as she had a lot of free time. Her deceased husband had left her enough to live comfortably for the rest of her days, but she still added some money with baking, something she did really well.

With a smile, the young woman sold another cupcake to another young mother with a child, and thanked the woman for the help. Her son, stopping on his tracks on seeing the mayor, smiled at the woman with that big smile, suspiciously similar to the one her brother had as a child. "Good morning, Mrs. Dani!", he greeted politely. "Wouldn't you like a cupcake to help our school get school supplies, please?", the boy completed, giving the most charming smile he could muster.

Back at her table, Mrs. Parkinson called for another familiar face. "Mr. Allardyce?", she called politely. "What a surprise!", the woman completed, really surprised to see the man in there.

It was a beautiful day. A nice day for the Elementary School to have their bake sale. Danielle "Dani" Allerton-Burns came with her son, Jared, to check it out. She was the mayor of the fine city of Clearwater. Her son was eleven now, but Dani used to help out with these bake sales when he went to this school too. Jared was admiring Mrs. Parkinson's cupcakes. Those were always a big hit and her son never could resist chocolate.

Dani tried to be a good mayor and it wasn't that hard to do in a small town. Everyone knew everyone in Clearwater. People certainly knew Dani and her family and Dani knew who most of them were. Like she knew who Brad Parkinson was. A sweet, innocent little boy, that always made her stop in her tracks whenever she saw him. The boy looked nothing like his late father. Instead, he always reminded her of her younger brother when she saw him. He might have his mother's eyes, but when he smiled, Brad looked just like Keith.

It wasn't something that made Dani thrilled. Although she didn't like a lot of things her brother did. Keith always liked to remind her that his personal life was none of her business. Although he seemed to forget that whatever he did could look bad on their family and on her. A part of Dani was always tempted to ask Mrs. Parkinson how close she and Keith really were, but Dani felt she already knew the answer.

Whatever Dani's thoughts were about who Brad's biological father was, she was never rude to the boy. She gave him a pleasant smile in return.

"Good morning and yes, I would. Jared, pick out three. One for me, you, and Dad."

Dani told her son. Her husband was the fire chief and was on duty. Tom couldn't make it to the bake sale but he had sweet tooth, just like their son. Jared nodded his head.

"Sure thing, Mom."

He didn't have to be told twice about that and went to see which cupcakes would be perfect. Dani turned back to Brad and asked.

"How much do I owe you, young man?"

Roy strolled through the school's front lawn, slightly out of breath and sweating but with a placid expression on his face all the same. He had the day off from work, and it was almost a ritual to go on an almost town-encompassing five mile run every time he did. He was the kind of man that, if he wasn't going to work or anywhere fancy, could almost always be found wearing tight football sweats and a t-shirt. Every now and then, he might even be found skipping or singing on his way home, as he never felt the need to act too much like an adult so long as he felt he was being responsible.

Roy stopped as he heard someone call out to him, smiling when he saw who it was despite feeling a bit uneasy.

"Hey Margareth," he said, extending his hand out to her with a smile still on his face. He quite liked Margareth, in fact, but ever since Keith's death the rumors about her and him made him have flashes of a gritty sex murder every time he saw her. Not that he'd ever consider her capable of such a thing, of course. His mind just liked to be dramatic at times, even when he didn't want it to be. The smell of the cupcakes interrupted his thoughts.

"These," he said, gesturing out at the cupcakes, "smell as good as I remember them being. If only I wasn't on a diet."

He winked before wiping sweat off his brow, panting audibly and pretending to be a whole lot more tired than he actually was. Margareth's eyes sent another flash of blood splattering on bed sheets through his brain.
