“So, are you really sure this is going to work?”, a brunette in her mid-30s asked the man who was standing by the window.

“Well… yes and no”, the man replied.

“Meaning…?”, the woman questioned.

The man sighed and returned to his desk. “I know they will come. All of them have reasons to do this. All you have to do is look at their interviews. I do not know how useful their skills will be. But still, I need to make sure they won’t go around with their powers uncontrolled, causing damage to everyone and themselves”.

The woman nodded and looked at the list on her tablet. “All right, I’m sold”, she finally replied. “I’ll e-mail them all now, and let them know they will be picked up from where they are and brought in the house. Do you need anything else?”.

The man shook his head. “No. Remember to drill into their heads that they can’t tell anyone about where they are going”.

Nodding again, the woman left the room to make contact with the young supers.

Andrea “Andy” Allen (Sonic)

Andrea was a little nervous. Mr. Williams had gotten her this place to stay, a phone and a laptop, and had told her to wait. She had been waiting for almost a month, and she wasn’t sure what she was waiting for. Andy had been feeling so anxious she had spiked a few times, unprovoked, and ruined her clothes. She had even spiked once while in bed, and had to get her mattress replaced.

And Mr. Williams had yet to get in contact. Whenever she had called him, the man would ask her to wait, to be patient. And for some reason, when speaking to him, Andy felt relaxed, and that she should do what he was telling her to.

But as soon as the effect of the man’s soothing words was gone, she would start feeling anxious again.

As soon as her phone made a soft whistling sound, Andy jumped from the chair where she had been sitting with a book. Was it the time? Was it now? Would she finally know what Mr. Williams was planning?

Picking up her phone, Andy opened her e-mails. There was a new message that read:

Dear Andrea,

I know you have been waiting for long enough. There were some things that had to be arranged, but all is done now. A car will show up tomorrow, at seven in the morning, to pick you up. Collect all your belongings, and do not tell anyone anything more than they already know. I will see you in the morning.

A. J. Willams.

“Finally!”, the girl exclaimed, dropping back on her chair. Whatever was supposed to happen, it would finally start moving now.

August licked the cookie batter off her fingers, eyes watching the exit of their spacious kitchen from which her mother had just left. She wasn't to eat any of the dough, as she was on a diet. Or, it seemed in her case, she was always on a diet. As a child, she had been allowed to dress up and collect candy, but at the end of the evening she had to trade it in for the equivalent in healthy, alternative snacks.

The cookies themselves were not for August, but for her twin brother Parker. He was going on a band trip to Italy, and they were having a bake sale to raise funds. While he would be off exploring a beautiful culture and having fun with his friends, August would participating in a live TV show about how much of a freak she was.

It hadn't been her idea. Most things weren't.

August was used to cameras. She was used to people telling her what to do. What she wasn't used to was the idea that her 'ability' was interesting to people, and that she would be observed because of it. Telling Parker about her abilities had been a relief. Telling her mother was a regret.

The show was better than being poked and prodded by scientists, sure, but seemed much more frightening. How was August supposed to deal with freaks? The thought was harsh but then, she was a freak herself.

Maybe she could close her eyes and let her spirit drift off to Paris, like she had when she was little. She would walk the streets, visit the Eiffel Tower and The Louvre.

If only. August couldn't keep her spirit out of her body too long or she began to feel sick and was forced to return. And sometimes her spirit body couldn't lift things, and she was really just an invisible mist.

August was ready to take another fingerful of the batter until she heard her mother's voice drift in from the stairs. She froze and spun around, braided hair whipping back. Her mother was on the phone, speaking intently to someone in a business-like tone. It was a tone she used with August and Parker most of the time.

"Yes, yes. 9:00? Good."

August's mother was now in the kitchen, pacing. August remembered as a child that she would follow her mother's pace and pretend to talk on the phone. She had wanted to be a businesswoman just like her, independent and successful. It turned out that August was neither good at numbers or communicating with people, so the dream didn't pass the age of eleven.

Snapping the phone shut, August's mother turn to her and smiled. "You have everything packed, sweetheart? They're coming tomorrow to pick you up."

August nodded, thinking to the three suitcases in her room. Two held clothes, and the other had her personal items. She imagined that there would be some sort of costume designer or makeup artist on the set, even if it was meant to be reality TV.

Tears suddenly began to form in August's eyes. She didn't want to leave Parker, or her house, her clothes, her Boston Terrier. She stepped forward and planted her head in her mother's chest.

"What if I go, and I want to go home?" She mumbled through her tears, as her mother stroked her hair.

"Then I'll come get you." Her mother held August for a moment longer before pulling away.

"Now stop that, I just had this shirt ironed."

Charlie screwed her eyes shut against the offensive sunlight that filtered in through the blinds and woke her. Irritated she threw an arm over her eyes and tried to fall back asleep. After a moment she flipped onto her stomach and groaned into her pillow. She looked up blew some coppery hair out of her face with an annoyed huff. She peered at the glaring red letters of the digital alarm clock on the bedside table. "Grrr..." She hauled herself upright and tried in vain to flatten her bed-hair as she squinted against the morning brightness. She sighed then hesitantly focused her gaze on her hand, for a moment she hoped that maybe it had all just been a bad dream. Her heart sank when after a moment she saw the wisps of smoke curl away from her fingertips. "Sorry Charlie." She muttered.

She grabbed the worn stuffed bear from next to her on the bed and squeezed it tightly, determinedly ignoring the scratchy feeling from where she had accidentally charred some small spots of its fur. Slowly, the details from the events of the last few weeks since she had made her audition tape came trickling back to her. She stood up and pulled her tank top off over her head as she walked half-zombie to the shower. Peeking in the mirror she got a glimpse of her hair, sticking out in random directions. She stuck her tongue out at her reflection and started the water. Once steam started to cloud the air she finished undressing and stepped in, allowing the water to finish waking her up. She never seemed to be able to get the water hot enough anymore, which probably had something to do with the constant "fever" she was running. At least when she was soaked she was less likely to smoke out the bathroom.

Finished showering, she brushed her teeth then wrapped herself in a towel and went back out into the hotel room. She looked around at her meager assortment of possessions. Enough to fill a suitcase and a duffel bag. She wasn't really one for material things anyway. At least she still had her phone. She yawned and sat down to check her email while her hair dried. Spam, spam, spam... Not spam? She clicked the email. As her eyes scanned it her jaw slowly dropped. She was accepted into the program. She tried to temper her excitement, she'd actually been chosen, which meant she had a chance to learn to control whatever had happened to her. It also meant that she'd be showing the world exactly how much of a freak she was... There was a good chance there were anti-Charlie safety measures in place, so silver lining.

She re-read the email, It was from a Mr. A.J. Williams. Brief, but to the point. She layed back on the bed, staring at her phone. They really moved fast, they'd pick her up tomorrow morning to transport her to the house. She just needed to tell them where. She typed out her reply, letting them know where to pick her up before setting her phone aside. A smile broke out across her face as she kicked the air in excitement. She levered herself upright, things were going to be crazy tomorrow... As always, the addiction was there. But she'd been doing well. She was clean and she wasn't going to blow her chance to get help over drugs or drink. She wouldn't need them to feel like she was in control. Charlie could do it herself. For the first time in a long time she was set on a course. She was determined, which was new and scary but exciting too. A reality show for freaks. Before she'd received her acceptance it hadn't even seemed real. Charlie had herself half convinced that there was no way she'd even get in or that it was a hoax, the possibility of which still lingered in the back of her mind. Either way she'd find out tomorrow.

Flopping onto the beanbag stationed on an otherwise bare floor, Gloria Valdez pulled out her laptop. When she fled home, she had taken very few things with her. This being said, her laptop was one of them. From the moment she had left, she had been searching for someone who could help her learn to control the powers she had so recently learned of. During a fight with her then boyfriend Alex, she caused a massive storm that took out the entire town of Glennbrooke, North Carolina. Luckily, it was a small town and only several hundred were killed but Gloria knew that if she was blamed for this, several hundred counts of murder would land her in a federal prison for life and then some. Immediately, Gloria had packed up and run, leaving nothing but a handwritten note for Alex saying how much she loved him and how she promised to return if her "issues" ever got under control.

Opening the laptop, Gloria rapidly hit buttons until she pulled up the screen containing her email. Three emails from Alex, one from her mother...and one from the people who had promised to help her. 'Thank god!' her mind raced as she opened the email and scanned the words. She had been accepted into their help program. She was to be there by 9:00 the next day. 'S**t I have to get going!' she realized, glancing at the small clock in the bottom corner of the screen and realizing it was nearly 8 PM already. Snapping her computer shut, not even bothering to read the emails from her boyfriend and mother, Gloria packed up the few things she had and booked a train for the next morning. 'Finally..I can fix this and get back to Alex where I belong' she smiled to herself as she laid down on the beanbag and closed her eyes.

Nick bolted upright in his .... his bed? He took a moment to look around himself. His heart and head pounded in unison as he surveyed the plain room. The curtains were drawn. A single floor lamp dimly illuminated the room in warm light. The smelled of freshly washed linens and dusty carpeting filled Nick's head. He fumbled his hands around the bed in search of his phone. His muffled ringtone played from under the pillow. A moment of searching and his hand gripped the cold buzzing rectangle and brought it to his face.

"Hi Nicky! This is Mom. Dad give me your number so I can message with your! I hope you having good time in school. Very proud and miss you very much.

The text brought a smile to Nick's face for a moment. Every response he typed, he quickly erased; they were all lies

"School's going well....
"It's great here...
"I got an A on my first Exam in...
"I'm fine...

He sighed and stood out of bed, tossing the phone back onto the pillow before stumbling into the bathroom. The harsh fluorescent light in the bathroom illuminated his morning face and made him look ghoulish. A quick look in the mirror told him he'd been out for a day at the least. He couldn't seem to remember why, though. He couldn't seem to remember much of anything from the past few days. Something about a show? He brushed his teeth and climbed into the shower. His mind was buzzing with thoughts as he tried to piece together where he was and why. He was concentrating so hard that he didn't notice the showerhead had stopped. A crackling sound followed by a chunk of ice hitting his back brought him back to reality. He looked up to see the nozzle had been encapsulated in ice and he immediately wiped his face in frustration.

"I guess I'm done then," he stepped out of the shower into the ice rink that had become the bathroom floor. A moment of jerky movements and slipping and Nick had managed to get back into the room.

As he got dressed in his same clothes, the phone he'd called his phone began to ring again. He took his time to get dressed before looking at it. A message from a hidden phone number popped up on his screen.

Dear Nicolas,

I know things are not very clear as of right now. There were some things that had to be arranged, but all is done now. A car will show up at the front of the hotel in an hour. Collect all your belongings and do not tell anyone anything more than they already know. I will see you soon.

A. J. Willams.

Memories flooded back into his mind. The Reality show! I made it?. He didn't know why but he was anxious and excited at the same time. He'd only taken the opportunity up because the posting had covered his traveling and lodging expenses, but now that he was actually going to be a part of a tv show he didn't know whether to regret the decision or jump on the bed. He packed his bags hurriedly and rushed out of the hotel room.

Don't know who's getting charged for that room but I hope they can handle some fees.

“Hi! My name is Raymond….no no…that is not right…” the nervous voice mumbled aloud to an empty room. The sound of a throat being cleared was heard next followed by what felt like the hundredth attempt. “Hey there, bro. The name is Raymond though my homies call me Ray or Alex…or Marc…” a hushed word of frustration and an exasperated breath later left the young man to glare at his form in the mirror. “This has to work. This will work. I will get better and I will be free.”

“RAYMOND? TIME TO COME DOWN FOR BREAKFAST!” the familiar and grating voice of his mother broke his pep talk to himself.

“COMING!”

Another deep breath, the glasses retrieved from breast pocket of his pinstripe button down and Raymond once again meticulously combed his hair. The black locks, though already in the most perfect of places, were treated to the touch of his comb. Once to the side, two down toward his back and repeated twice to ensure each hair was in place. Mother always said to stick to a routine. Routines made the world go round. Kept people focused and safe. Calm and safe, that is what a routine meant for him and those he cared about. Time and time again, Raymond had been reminded of what happened when he got upset. Disappearing into the floor to fall forever to the core of the earth and get stuck there until he died being one of the most hazardous of problems. Then there was his mother’s favorite about how Raymond could hug someone and end up inside of them. Killing the both of them. How colorful his childhood was and as an adult he knew his mother meant well, but it did not stop him from feeling a bit stifled by them both.

Down the stairs, care taken to make sure that each step was taken. Safety first, as mother would say. “Good morning,” the greeting gave to both parents, though his father appeared to be his usual unresponsive self while he vigorously read the paper. At the table, Raymond took his seat and spent the next few moments properly getting ready for his meal. Napkin placed into his lap, utensils checked for dirt and or grim before being set in optimum position for him to eat. Glass of water filled but not too much that he would be tempted to fill up on it rather than eating the delicious meal his mother had prepared. “Smells good.”

“Egg whites, with lightly toasted wheat bread, no butter of course and some orange juice just slightly watered down to remove a bit of that acidic kick. You know, you’re favorite.” The cheery and motherly tone of his mother brought a smile to his face, even if the rather bland and boring meal did not. In silence they ate until his phone went off.

“No phones at the table, Raymond. You know the rules.” His father said without looking up from his paper.

“Yes, but you know we are waiting on that email, it could be that?”

The look from his wife caused the man from behind the paper to sigh, “Fine, but make it quick we are trying to spend time here as a family.” Another sigh as he continued to read the paper in silence.

A few taps on his phone and Raymond had the email open. The words practically leapt off the screen as he drank them in with pure excitement and happiness. “I’m in!” up from his seat he jumped. “I’M IN!” voice now a cry of war and victory that for the first time in his life he would have a chance to be free.

“Ray…Raymond….” The familiar voice of his mother cut through the joy he felt. Which was just in time, as he was only a torso sticking out from the dining room floor.

“Well, crap.”

“RAYMOND! LANGUAGE!”

“Sorry mother.” Phone still in hand, he would have to wait until tomorrow morning, but he was going to be free. Finally free.

He was doing his best impression of a puddle while one of his mothers sat on the window seal overlooking the 17th floor of a 24 story hotel. He was in the kitchen, on the floor, looking like a puddle of blue/pink/purple mud while his Mother talked on the phone with whoever it was from the reality show. He really didn't want to go. He wanted to be back with his fathers and mothers back at the lab. They were all the scientist who worked on the project that actually created him. He missed them all so badly that now he normally spent most of the day in a blob on the floor.

Goo blinked up from the floor as his mother hung of the phone and made her way over to him. "Now sweety, don't be so glum. This is the perfect way for you to learn to control yourself as well as get better around people your own age." Goomie just made a gurgling sound since his mouth wasn't really there when he was in a puddle form. Slowly he would pull himself up, his face, arms, torso, and hair seeming to form out of the puddle like someone sculpting clay. "But I want to stay with you guys, I'll miss you so much..." The woman smiled down at him and wrapped him in her arms. He leaned against her shoulder, whining softly. "You'll be fine sweet pea." She cooed to him.

Goo sighed as his mother pulled him up and shooed him off to his room. He glanced around at the perfectly made bed and tastefully decorated room. He didn't like it here. It wasn't his room which was covered in his own kiddy drawings and soft things that he could lay on, or the toys that his parents had given him. Now he had packed what few toy she could fit, his drawings, and some new clothes that the scientists had bought for him. Honestly he normally never wore clothes, there was no reason too. He didn't have any unmentionables on his body like normal people do (Though he didn't really know much about naked humans anyways.) Clothes had always made him feel closed in when his body could shift and change however he saw fit, though getting back to his normal boy shape was sometimes a problem and took quite a lot of energy. Apparently they were going to help him with his short comings when it came to his abilities.

He flopped onto the bed and stared up at the circling ceiling fan, wondering what the other people would be like on the show. Would they be like his fathers and mothers? Probably not. They probably wouldn't understand him and call him names. Goomie let out a soft sigh and closed his purple eyes. One more night and he would be living among strangers. He hoped he would be able to make friends here, that's all he wanted. Friends. He'd never had friends before. The only people he'd ever known where the scientists that created him. All he wanted was friends his own age who would love him for himself. That wasn't too much to ask was it?

The next morning

Andrea "Andy" Allen - Sonic

Andrea was incredibly excited. She was finally going to see this place where she would be taught to control her powers, and meet new people like her. Well, not exactly like her, as she was sure they would have other skills. But still, people who were different. Andrea wondered if any of the others had ever hurt anyone. Maybe. She would have to ask, once she was comfortable enough. For now, though, she was glad to be going to this place and learning not to hurt anyone else.

Feeling too excited to sleep, Andrea spent the entire night up, checking her meager belongings and making sure she wasn't forgetting anything.

The girl woke up at six in the morning, too excited to stay in bed any longer, and took a shower, putting on her best clothes - meaning, the ones she had damaged in the least - and waiting down in the lobby for the car to come and pick her up. As soon as it came, a man came out of the car and paid for Andy's expenses before picking up her backpack and inviting her to follow him.

Obediently, the girl followed the man and slipped into the car, falling asleep almost right away, tired of the sleepless night.

At the places all of the others were, cars would be equally sent in the morning - on the time agreed upon with either the person themselves or the parents - to pick them up. Whoever came in for them - an inexpressive man in a black suit and wearing sunglasses - would pay for their expenses and carry their baggage to the car, placing it in the trunk. The young ones would be asked to sit at the back of the car and the man would drive them to what seemed like an office building.

As each car stopped, the driver would let the occupant know that they would wait for a while until everyone was there.

As for Gloria, who had made her way herself, she would have told to go to the same building, and wait in the reception area, for she would be picked up there and led to the meeting hall once everyone else had arrived.

The gratingly shrill sound of Charlie's phone alarm woke her early the next morning. Blearily, she tried in vain to glare at the display. She had trouble making out the time through the veil of sleep fogging her eyes. The gears of her mind creaked into motion as she puzzled out why on Earth she needed to wake up so early. As she silenced the alarm it clicked into place. Charlie looked at the time again before sitting bolt upright, her red mane sticking out wildly like a fiery halo. She scrambled out of bed, pulling clothes on as she did. They would be here to pick her up in any minute now. Charlie had already made sure all her things were packed and ready the night before. In fact she had spent most of the day checking and rechecking her possessions. Ineitably, she became so restless that she had to take a short walk. She turned back when she came across a bar. She stood, staring a the doorway for a few seconds before shaking her head. Bars were generally full of volatile liquids and volatile people. Lady Molotov didn't quite have the right ring to it anyway, Charlie thought bitterly.

Charlie peered through the blinds of the motel room, looking for any sign of the car she was told they'd be sending. In the back of her mind she still worried that it was all a huge trick or part of an elaborate scheme to make her into a laboratory test subject. Her eyes drifted to the road, she was pretty sure she could still make a break for it. It wouldn't be the first time she would basically be living on the streets. Then again, what did she really have going for her that would make being a freaky science experiment that much worse? The smell of smoke snapped Charlie back to reality. She took a deep breath, shaking her hands in hopes they would stop smoking as she let her anxiety subside. "No turning back now Charlie."

As if on cue, a sleek black car pulled into the lot in front of Charlie's motel room. She was a little impressed because, either this show had more budget than she was expecting or there were some serious rockstars pulling into this motel. She figured the later was pretty unlikely though as she began to shoulder her bag. At least they hadn't shown up in a windowless van or whatever. Within a few moments there was a knock on the door, standing in the doorway was a smartly dressed man wearing sunglasses and an earpiece and holding himself with an unmistakable air of "time to go." The crimson-haired girl grabbed her suitcase and followed the man. Charlie could have sworn he was giving her a bemused look behind those shades. "Yeah, I pack light, what of it?" She asked. The man remained silent. Charlie stowed her gear in the trunk before calling shotgun. The man looked at her before directing his gaze to the back seat. "I'm gonna call you Mr. Friendly." Charlie replied, as she climbed into the backseat, somewhat dejectedly.

She drew her knees up to her chest and leaned against the widow while putting in her earbuds. She spent a moment fiddling with her phone before settling on a playlist that fit her mood. She wasn't sure how long she'd been sitting like that, lulled by meandering indie-rock and the passing scenery, when a voice jolted her back to reality. "Miz Reid." Charlie's head pivoted toward's the source of the noise, nearly upsetting her position on the seat of the car. "Hm? Yeah, are we there?" She asked, pulling her earbuds out. "No, sorry Miz Reid, I-" The driver wasn't able to finish his sentence as Charlie cut him off. "Nix the Miz thing, that was my mother. C'mon Mr. Friendly, call me Charlie." The driver sighed, Charlie couldn't tell what kind of look he was giving her in the mirror behind those sunglasses, but somehow she knew there was a look. By the sigh Charlie figured, with a smirk, that it was likely exasperation.

"Sorry Charlie."
"Eh! Be careful, it's learning." Charlie joked with a self-satisfied smirk.
"Har, har."
"I calls 'em like I sees 'em. And lookit you, all livin' up to the Friendly name and whatnot. Anyway, sup?" She asked, bringing the conversation back around to the point.
"Oh, uh yeah... It's just, they gave us a dossier. Can you really?.. Flame up?"

"What? You got a fire extinguisher under the seat?" All trace of Joking left Charlie's eyes. "And for the record it's not so much flame up as smoke out. What's with that" Yeah, I'm a freak but they said this wasn't a witch hunt." Charlie finished speaking and withdrew into herself. Mr. Friendly's face remained expressionless. As she went to put her earbuds back in Charlie became aware of the sounds of a ventilation fan. Wisps of smoke curled up from Charlie's shoulders. She pulled at the collar of her sweater, suddenly self conscious but only managed to release another puff of smoke from her chest. Thoroughly mortified by her inability to control both her temper and her powers, Charlie's jaw was clamped shut as she hugged her knees in the backseat staring out the window.

The next time Mr. Friendly broke the silence was to say "Looks like we're a little early."
Charlie had been lightly dozing but sat up as the car came to a stop in front of what appeared to be a large office building. She yawned and stretched, looking around before relaxing back into her seat. Was she just supposed to wait in the car..? "The others should be here any minute." Mr. Friendly said as he stepped out of the car. As he opened Charlie's door to help her out he added. "I don't think you're a freak." Charlie looked hard at him for a moment before replying. "Then you're almost as screwed up as I am aren't you?"

Charlie collected her bags from the trunk. She set her bags by her feet on the pavement and leaned with her back against the car door; A car that was far more expensive than she had any business leaning on. Like that she waited, headphones in, anxiously fidgeting with a lock of the red hair that stuck out from under her beanie.

The first-floor lobby was relatively empty except for a bleary-eyed group or two shuffling around the "living room". The morning rays of the sun bathed the dingy floors and faux marble counter of the reception desk. Nick stood hunched near the coffee bar with his hands stowed into the front of his dull grey hoodie. The woman brunette woman behind the desk, maybe in her mid-twenties, kept sending odd looks his way. Nick tried to act as casual as he could manage, but he was too nervous to sit down. He pretended to look over the selection of drinks at the small counter to give himself something else to focus on. He'd just then noticed that most of them had been bubbling and trembling in their containers. The large aluminum carafe spewed steam and glowed like the coil of an electric oven. Nick took that as a sign to maybe get some fresh air. He shouldered his back, gave the receptionist an uncomfortable smile and briskly walked to the exit. It felt like he was trying to casually get through an airport checkpoint with volatile materials.

Just as he pushed through the revolving door, he ran into what seemed like a human boulder in a black suit. He knocked the air out of his own lungs and stumbled backward, but the man he'd nearly assaulted didn't even budge. He had to be at least six-and-a-half feet tall, bald with black shades obscuring his eyes. From the rest of his face, he could tell he was giving him a cold, unemotional look. For just a flash of a moment, Nick thought that maybe Hitman was inspired by real life events and someone had sent Agent 47 to kill him, but that couldn't be possible. You have to be important to be assassinated.

"Mr. Do?" the man spoke in a deep unemotive tone

"uh yeah? You the from the TV show people?" he responded uncertainly, messing with the strap of his bag as it slid from his shoulder.

"Follow me," the man said before turning around and taking several rigid steps toward a polished glossy black car. He opened the passenger side door before standing at attention his hands behind his back. Nick walked to the door and looked at the man for a moment before saluting and sitting into the seat. The corners of the man's mouth seemed to tug downward at the gesture.
"Funny." The man said before slamming the door and walking around to the driver's seat. Something told Nick he didn't find it that funny.

The ride was long, and silent for the most part. Nick sat flipping through messages on the phone, trying his best to avoid being seen. Those moments when he was bold enough to look at the man told him he didn't notice much except for the road ahead. The man suddenly spoke and caused Nick to jump in his seat and drop the phone.

"There are drinks in the compartment if you want any," as if he didn't trust the man, Nick opened the compartment to check. A collection of water bottles and cans of soda and juice neatly lined the door. Nick let out a chuckle before grabbing a bottle of water and gulping half of it down immediately. Nick swore he saw the man raise an eyebrow.

"So, Mr. Do..."

"Nice rhyme," Nick responded, the man didn't budge, "Call me Nick,"

"So, Nick"

"Sounds better doesn't it?" Nick added quickly.

"We were provided information about the individuals we were to collect,"

"Collect?" Nick snickered "We trading cards or something?"

"You attended UCLA for a short period but began undergraduate research in your first semester am I correct?"

"Uh, yeah... that's really what you wanna ask about?"

The man was silent for a while before he began again "I have a sister that was in graduate school for forensic science there...." he didn't have to continue to understand what he meant. Nick stared down at his half empty bottle and watched the small droplets condense and form a cloudy ring around the lip.

"you uhh, how's she doing?" Nick tried to sound as calm and unassuming as he could manage, the man gave him nothing.

"She's fine, the department was transferred shortly after the incident. I wouldn't be assigned to you if I had some vendetta, so don't panic." the man's cold tone wasn't reassuring. Nick fidgeted in his seat for a bit before clearing his throat several times. Before he could speak, hitman cut him off.

"I was sent to show you the human consequences of your actions. I may be fine, she may be fine, but you've had an impact on the life of someone you've never met because you didn't know how to control yourself,"

Nick wanted to protest. How he thought that was unfair. How could this guy even know what it was like to.... to be a risk just because you were having a bad day? Should he just be happy all the time every damn day, was that it? Was he supposed to go up to the mountains for five years and train to master his emotions and become an enlightened master of the Kelvin system? He had classes to go to, exams to study for, regimented schedules and meeting to keep up with. He wanted to throw his bottle of hot water at him and tell him what an butthole move it was to assume he knew anything about him. But in the back of his mind, he knew the man was right. Nick had tried to act like he was normal all his life, and it hadn't just screwed him over. He had to accept who he was... a time bomb. He had to do better...

His hands shook as he watched the once bubbling water form cold creeping crystals against the plastic of the bottle. The car stopped and the man got up from his seat, he walked quickly to the passenger side door and opened it. Nick had been so wrapped up in his thoughts that he didn't notice that they moved until the man spoke again.

"We've arrived a bit earlier than scheduled, the others should arrive shortly," he said this rehearsedly, as if he could manage to be more distant than he'd been before. Nick got up out of his seat and looked up at the building that towered over the front- parking lot? Was this a studio or a telemarketing office? Nick looked up at it for a moment before the door of the car was slammed behind him. He jolted and turned to look at the man, but he'd already made his way back to the driver's seat. Another identical car sat in the parking lot a few feet away, and another equally uncertain looking person stood on the pavement. He glanced over her way, but she looked too occupied to notice him.

Was she another person like him? He tried to find any indication of being.... different but nothing stuck out as out of the ordinary about this girl. He guessed he didn't look exceptionally special either, come to think of it. He thought maybe for a moment, he'd be standing here in agony until he noticed something. Were those embers? Wisps of smoke and flecks of debris were dancing and catching in the light above her. It was subtle but definitely not natural. Nick's heart beat hard in his chest and he tried desperately to collect himself. He looked for something he could do to show off his own abilities. The water bottle! He quickly melted the ice and poured the half-full bottle of water in his mouth. The feeling of boiling water should have scalded his mouth but all he felt was the rolling bubbles and growing pressure in his mouth. He leaned against the car and tilted his head back a bit to let the steam billow out of him like smoke from a vape pen. Instead, he overestimated how much steam expanded and just spat out a cloud of quickly dissipating mist followed by a stream of steamy coughs and wheezes.

"smooth," the suited man said through the car window.

“RAYMOND! TIME TO GET UP!”

A groan and he rolled over in bed, vision blurry as he patted about his side table for the clock he knew to be there. The analog arms of the old clock waved in and out of view before he made the move to grab up his glasses. With some sleep laden coordination that resulted in him nearly poking his own eye out, Ray was finally able to get his glasses on.

“Six…in the morning….” He groaned and fell back into bed for a moment and wondered how long his mother had been awake. From the fresh scent of laundry in the dryer, the delicious aroma of breakfast, he knew it had be to for a while now. Always one to be up before the others, Raymond knew his mother liked to be super prepared. This meant, rising before the dawn and having everything ready for the day that was planned. In this case, it was in regards to getting him ready for his big day. The biggest day in his life that would likely be one of many to changes in his life to come. All he had to do was survive her vigorous morning routine.

He could do that.

The hot water of his shower had just begun to relax the tension from his shoulders when without warning the curtain was thrown back and his mother’s overly chipper face greeted him. “Don’t forget to wash up really good….ca-“

“MOTHER! WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN HERE?!”

“Oh hush,” she waved a dismissive hand at his obvious annoyance even as Raymond struggled to cover with the ridiculously small washcloth. “Not like I have not seen it before.”

“MOM! THAT WAS YEARS AGO! WE TALKED ABOUT THIS! DAD SAYS THAT YOU CAN’T KEEP DOING THIS KIND OF STUFF. PLEASE GET OUT!”

“WELL!” indignation in her voice as she turned in a huff. “I am just trying to make sure that my baby boy looks his best and is putting his best foot forward. Only to be treated like I am worthless! To think of all that I have done for him. All that I have sacrificed for him and he just tosses me aside.”

Even from the bathroom, Raymond could still hear his mother’s pity show and knew there was nothing he could do to stop it. This was how she was, or more how she had become the moment he expressed an interest in the world beyond their home. Truth be told, it was Raymond’s father who entered him into the show and who wanted this for him. If it were up to his mother, he would just live at home forever and that be the end of it. Thankfully, this had been the one time in his life that Raymond could remember his father being strong and firm about the whole thing.

Outside he waited with way too many bags, packed for him by his mother who basically insisted that he bring his entire room. Already, she had fixed his tie and messed with his hair four times. He did not even want to think about how much “dirt” she felt compelled to clean with a kerchief and some of her spit from his face. In fact, the woman was making another attempt for his face when the car finally arrived.

“Thank God!” Raymond exclaimed in a hushed whisper. Already, he broke away from the overly tight grip of his mother and practically ran for the car. A woman met his half way, the black of her shades hid her eyes, but there was an amused smile on her full lips as she opened the trunk for him.

“Mother, right?” she asked him and Ray could only nod. That only made her smile more, teeth perfectly white that stood out all the more against her mocha colored skin. The dreaded locks of chestnut brown were woven up into a bun that added to her height, but also humanized her in a way that the suit and shades did not. The backseat door was opened for him and Raymond was beyond grateful to disappear into the back. The cool leather greeted him, along with a physical barrier to his mother, whom he could almost feel running for the car. Why would she want to do such a thing? To try and talk him out of it? Make him stay with her?

“Drive…pl..ple…please.”

“You got it,” the amused woman pulled the car out and he could swear he heard his mother calling his name, but that was of no consequence to him. Ray was on his way to something else, something better…hopefully. Maybe. Ugh maybe he should have stayed? It was safe in the house. The place was calming and familiar and…

“HEY!” the word accompanied by a sharp whistle cut through his panicking and caused him to focus. “Calm down back there. Alright? I doubt it would be nice to just phase through the bottom of a moving vehicle. Right? Probably hurt. A lot. Right?” Confusion etched on his face, even as her shaded gaze sought his own in the rear view. “Deep breaths. No worries. You are going to be in for a world of fun and control like you never had before…” a pause and she smiled. “Freedom.”

Those words seemed to be what he needed and Raymond relaxed back into the seats and drifted off, which was odd given how much sleep he should have gotten the night before. In what felt like no time at all, “Ray? Raymond…”

“Huh? What…hmm?” groggily he asked while the sleep was rubbed from his eyes.

“We’re here. Don’t worry, you got this.” The woman said from the door which she had opened for him.

“Thank you,” he said with sincerity. “Really, I appreciate it.” He felt like hugging would have been too much so he kind of just stood there and rubbed the back of his head. “Umm..soo what can or should I call you?”

“Cosima,” she said simply and nodded to the trunk. “Get your bags and say hi to your fellow cast mates.”

“Cast…” Raymond glanced over and saw two others. One of which looked like he was in the process of an asthma attack or something. “OH! OK!” into greeting people mode, Raymond gathered the way too many bags and tried to get to the others without dropping anything and looking like a fool. Of course this failed and by the time he was with the others he had played parking lot soccer with more than a bag or two. “What’s up mah…peeps?” the slang felt dirty in his mouth. “My name is Raymond, but my friends call me Ray-Dog…or just Big Ray…cause I’m a baller…”

Shoot me now.

Goomie said nothing for pretty much the entire car ride, instead he was just a puddle in the floor board, his clothes and anything that had been on him in his human shape just seemed to be floating in his gel like substance of a form. His eyes were visible, glancing from the roof of the car and out the window. They were out there, on the power lines, in the branches of the trees they passed, flying over the car, those dreaded feathered things that haunted his nightmares. Goo did his best to ignore the birds that they passed on their journey and instead tried to listen to the car music or read a book or try to find some of his favorite creatures in a new game he got about catching cute little things in balls, he didn't understand the game very much but he loved seeing the funny little monsters.

The driver seemed to ignore Goo most of the time, though he would glance back every now and then just to make sure that the kid was more or less alive. He was worried that Goomie might stain his seats when he had first arrived, but Goomie's body wasn't slimy even though it looked as if it were made of slime. Really he did have skin that held him together, it could just change shape and split but always came back into whatever shape he desired. Still the driver kept eyeballing him.

After a long time the car finally came to a stop, the driver got out, came around and opened the door. Goomie peeked out from in the floor board and blinked out at the wide world in front of him. It was sooooo scary. But something caught his eyes. He glanced over at three other people, probably close to his age, standing next to cars of their own. These must be his new friends. They will like him and help him learn, or at least that's what his parents in the lab say.

But Goo was still afraid of them. The driver only sighed and removed his single luggage bag from the seat, sitting it beside the car. He left the door open so that Goomie could see out and hopefully get out of the car eventually of his own will, and wouldn't have to be shoveled out in a bucket which was the way they had got him into the car in the first place.

He took a deep breath. "It will be fine, it will be fun, they will like you." he told himself before he would slowly melt out of the floor boards and form a rainbow puddle on the ground beside his luggage. He looked around, nothing was exploding yet. This might be ok. Slowly, the top of his body would take shape, his head and hair followed by shoulders and his arms, the rest was still a goo puddle. Still, nothing bad seemed to happen. Even slower, the rest of his body formed, his waist and legs, his knees instantly curling against his chest as he sat beside his luggage. His clothes followed suit, forming over the body parts they needed to cover. Now he was in his complete human shape. Still, everything was calm. He would lay his chin on his knees, looking like a kid who got told they couldn't play ball with the others, his purple eyes slowly and cautiously glancing towards the three that were already there.

When Ramona woke up, there was a long, sleek, black car in her driveway. Confused and groggy, it took her a while to realize what exactly it was doing there. She had overslept, and it was past 7:00 already. She cursed herself for not setting an alarm, and rushed to get dressed.

darnit, now where the hell was that scarf?

5 minutes later and she rushed out of the door, still wrapping the cursed thing around her neck. One of her "dolls" ran in front of her, screaming "Hold on! I'm here, I'm here!"

Her driver, a middle aged woman with far too much makeup on, looked amused. "Glad you made it. Had me worried there."

He made sure to let both versions of her in before he closed the doors. It was silent for quite some time, and then the driver asked, "So... which one of you is the older twin?"

Ramona sighed. She got that question, or something similar, a lot. She didn't expect to get it here, however.

"This is my power, I create copies of myself. Shouldn't you know this already, as staff of the show?"

"Honey, I just drive. I don't get any details about anything. Why are you cloning yourself now, anyways? To show off?"

"That would be hard to explain. Just understand that I'm mute, and my copies aren't."

"Oh... I see. I'm sorry I brought that up. It must be hard."

Ramona scowled, but quickly hid that reaction. Best not to start off on a bad foot with this show. "You shouldn't be."

"Hm?" The driver seemed genuinely confused by this reaction

"I'm mute. So be it. It's not a tragedy. I can clearly talk to you, can't I? So what if it's in a roundabout way? I'm not going to brood over it, so neither should anyone else."

The car ride went in silence for a little while longer. In an attempt to make the silence less uncomfortable. Ramona looked through the left window, while her doll looked through the right. She practiced seeing through both sets of eyes. The picture was fuzzy, but she could get a good sense of what was around the car. She was passing through busy city streets, everything looked clean, everyone looked rich.

But the silence was still uncomfortable, so she decided to break it.

"That's kinda one of the reasons why I signed up for this, ya know?" The words left the mouth of her doll, and then, it just stopped moving as she struggled for the next thing to say. It was hard to articulate what was in her mind.

The driver smiled knowingly. "I know what you mean."

Ramona was surprised, and her concentration was broken, causing the doll to flicker in and out of existence. "You do?" , said the afterimage

"You're thinking to yourself; 'These people are as strange as me! Some are probably even stranger! If I'm going to be treated as normal anywhere, It's going to be here.'"

As soon as she said this, she pulled over. "We're here. Go say hi to your fellow weirdos."

She open the door for her, and Ramona smiled and nodded. Her doll flickered back into existance as she walked towards the rest of the cast

Andrea "Andy" Allen - Sonic

Andrea was not happy at all with the idea of waiting until everyone was there. Waiting until everyone was there meant interacting with everyone. And interacting with everyone meant feeling anxious. And feeling anxious meant feeling threatened. And feeling threatened meant spikes. With a sigh, Andrea came to the conclusion that this had been a bad idea. What had she been thinking?

Shaking her head, Andrea decided that waiting for everyone in the car was the best choice. In the car, there was nobody but the driver, and he seemed harmless enough. And staying in would give Andrea the time to relax and prepare herself to meet everyone.

Still berating herself for having said yes to this TV show, Andrea picked up a book and stuck earbuds in, to drown out the world. She really needed this to calm down.

It wouldn't be too long, though, before Andrea decided to step out of the car. It was better for her to move out on her own than to be called by someone abruptly and get startled out of her peace - and into getting stuck on her seat by her spikes. Taking a deep breath, she pulled her earbuds off and shoved everything in her purse before tapping softly on the driver's shoulder.

"Hey", she murmured, "can you please unlock the doors?", the girl required.

As soon as the doors were unlocked, she stepped out and looked around, to see if there was someone else around and waiting to be admitted into the office building.
