A Tale Of Time Untethered

The castle was dead silent. Most people would find it eerie and unnerving. Out in the courtyard, everything seemed that same apart from being a little more overgrown than normal. Inside however, it was chaotic. There were statues everywhere, in the most inconvinient of places, and not the normal kind, these were all extremely detailed and lifelike. Most were frozen in fear, alarm painted across their faces.

At least Lily didn’t have to look at the poor souls, sitting in the high up rafters of the castle, away from their lifeless forms. If anyone were to catch a glimpse of her crouching up there from way below, they would assume she was a regular statue, a gargoyle. It was probably the wings. They were quite large and leathery, rather like a bat’s. Right now, they were folded at her back but they were definitely noticable. Sighing, Lily blew a tuft of brown hair out of her face and leaned back, dangling one leg over the edge of the roof. She knew it was extremely selfish but a small part of her was glad that all of the people were gone. She could roam without worrying about being hunted or having arrows launched at her midair. And there was no more screaming and running. Last time she’d gotten an arrow through the wing, it hurt.

Of course, all of that peace and quiet could vanish in a mere instant. And vanish it most certainly did. There was a series of crashes and the unmistakable screeching, metallic howl of a grimwire. leaping to her feet, Lily dived off the rafter and flew in and around the castle’s towers until she spotted the source of the disturbance. There was an entire pack of grimwires, at least six or seven of them and they were ramming themselves furiously at the portcullis of the castle gate. What they were trying to achieve, Lily didn’t know.

“Stupid creatures…,” she muttered, landing on a portion of slanted tile roof. Then, she saw their reason and it became oh, so clear. There was a person in the castle gardens and they were on the other side of the gate which was moments from being broken through.

The light was bright and all consuming, stronger than any oil lamp or fire Elaine had ever seen. It was as if the moon had begun to decent from the sky, brightening as it closed down onto the ground. The woman planted her heels in the dirt, swinging her arms up to cover her face and she shut her eyes as tight as they would go. She was young still, 25, unmarried and no where ready for death but it seemed fate had other plans...
The light began to fade in brightness but Elaine could still feel the heat of it pressing against the cloth of her sleeves, strangely enough the noises where different as well, instead of the familiar hooting of owls or crickets chirping it evaporated into a quiet buzz of silence. Curiously she opened her eyes, giving her pupils a moment to dilate to the necessary degree. Her vision came out blurry at first, she saw bright green, more than there should but in a forest at night. Blinking away the blur her vision finally settled, leaving her confronted with an array of vegetation, flowers and bushes, behind them a rather large stone architecture. Was she hallucinating? She had heard tales, of strange mushrooms and herbs that when mixed would create concoctions that made men lose their minds and fight invisible demons. Could that of had happened to her, was she poisoned? Was she dead? Was this some sort of vision?

The questions where swirling in her mind but as much as she tried to rationalize she could not come up with an answer to her queries. In the mean time, she would be forced to adjust. Elaine studied her surroundings more, she was in some form of gardens, similar to the ones she new back home but the building surrounding it was much different, it had the air of a castle almost. Nearby her was an opening to get into the building, she began to walk towards it hoping she could get some answers there. As she approached the entry way figures began to catch her eye, at first glance they looked like people but on further inspection she noticed they where entirely made of stone. Dozens of them, in seemingly random places. Elaine felt her gut clench as she approached one of the said figures, something about this place was eerie.

"Bonjour? Quelqu'un est-il ici?" She spoke nervously, after no response she tried again in English, after all there was a chance she wasn't even in France anymore. "Hello, anyone here?" After being met with once again silence she felt her shoulders droop and a sigh escaped her, she was standing next to the statue now. As she turned to look at it her breath got caught in her throat, the face of the statue was horrifyingly lifelike, and had the expression of pure terror in its face. As she looked away she began to realize all the status had similar expressions and some where looking straight in her direction.

A spark of fear jolted in her and she quickly grabbed the hem of her dress and jogged back out into the courtyard struggling to catch her breath as she walked. A loud banging was coming from outside one of the walls and that was when she saw them. Large hound like beasts with glowing arms and reflective pelts where banging against the gates, snarling and scratching as they broke though the steel grid. Elaine stood frozen in fear, the stuff of nightmares was before her. Sucking in a breath she didn't even know she could take, she let out an ear piercing shriek that resonated through the walls, its power doubled thanks to her being part siren.

Stone cold ground slabs met his bare feet as Ranec tried to make sense of the world around him. Everything was just different, so very different. The large stick he now held in hand had been yanked from a tree, its weight was solid and reassuring to the otherwise frantic man.

“DURC! GERAG!” he shouted to the emptiness around him. Fear in his voice though he fought to keep his sanity. “TONAK! KALREH!”

The names of those who had been in his hunting party called out though he doubted he would not get a word back from them. That part of man that told him of danger, the one that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end was the same one that told him wherever he was, he was not home. Not by a long shot. Perhaps this was the afterlife? The place among the stars where he was to go when he died? That lion had caught him completely by surprise. He knew he was done for, before the beast and its claws could slice through his flesh, so he must be dead. Right?

“yáʼátʼééh!”

Still, nothing but silence until he heard…something.

If he were to try and describe this to one of his people, he would say it was like that of a great bird or beast of some kind. Powerful and screechy, at a pitch that he did not think he had ever heard in his entire life, nor had anyone in his tribe spoke of such a sound. Accompanied by the sound was that of wolves whose howls of pain and misery something that felt familiar in an otherwise unfamiliar world. The fact that the beasts were in pain not a comfort in the slightest but now he knew where to head. Branched hefted in hand, he moved toward the sound body low to the ground as he tried to find a vantage point where he could observe but not be seen. Care taken so that he would be downwind of whatever was out there.

An ear piercing shriek resonated through the courtyard and Lily clamped her hand firmly over her ears. Yes, it was a definitely a person. And one with exceptionally powerful lungs too. Leaning over the edge, it was an obviously high class lady, perfectly coiffed hair and all. Just the fact that there was human who hadn't been petrified was startling in itself. One who was witless enough to come to the castle and cross a pack of the metal beasts. Hence stupid idea no. 1 courtesy of the valkyrie. Lily leapt down from the roof and landed on the ground, mere meters from where the lady stood, running towards her. She didn't simply swoop overhead in case the lady screamed again.
"They're about to break through the gate! You need to get out of here, now!" Without waiting for any response, Lily grabbed her from behind and tried to lift her up, out of the path of the grimwires. As you might expect, carrying someone who nearly weighed as much as she did and trying to fly was not easy. Especially if the someone in question was struggling and pitching a fit in the process. But Lily managed. Now they were both high up enough to avoid the wrath of the grimwires, on a wide balcony.

"That was close for you," Lily muttered, perched precariously on the railing, flexing her wings out. "Are you daft? Hasn't anyone told you the first rule of survival out here is 'don't **** off the grimwires?'

Thinking back on it, she had never expect to go out like this. Whenever she imagined death she pictured the romanticized versions loved by authors, growing old with a beautiful maiden on her arm. Or even heroic deaths, like the great La Pucelle d'Orléans, Joan of Arc, who died a martyr for her people. This however, getting torn apart limb from limb by metal demons? This was her fate? If so it was a cruel one, perhaps she was being punished for loving her fellow flesh. The integrity of the portcullis was breaking, while her scream seemed to falter them a moment, she noticed a few of them had collapsed, the others quickly regained their momentum. They would burst through any second now, Elaine knew she withstood no chance even if she ran. With a sigh she accepted her fate and her eyes gently came to a close.

A gust of wind interrupted her and she quickly looked towards the noise, a woman with bright hues in her hair and eyes of deep purple stood before her, dark wings of a kind she's never seen before resting on her back. Was this an angel? Had the artists of the renaissance depicted them wrong all along? Before she could get any answers the strange woman began running towards her yelling at her but as she opened her mouth Elaine caught a glimpse of her sharp canines, she was no angel she was just another demon! Elaine began to take a step back planning on making a run for it but before she could get anywhere the stranger grabbed her from behind and lifted her. Elaine struggled but the grip was too strong, eventually they landed on a balcony. Elaine quickly detached herself, pushing the woman off her and making room between them. The winged demon perched herself on the balcony like some sort of Gothic gargoyle.

Elaine faltered slightly at her harsh words but quickly felt all her fear and stress bottle over the top. "Am I daft? Hasn't anyone ever told you it's rude to touch a lady without her permission?" Elaine nervously palmed the edge of her dress, the tips of her white gown where beginning to get stained from the ground. "Who are you? What are you? Where am I? Have I been kidnapped? Is this hell? Are you a demon? What in the world is a grimwire?" Her questions spluttered out like a cracked dam, her panic was increasing by the second she had no idea what was going on and the fear showed on her face.

A frown played upon Lily's face. The woman didn't seem to understand the situation in the slightest which might explain a few things. Amnesia, a head injury? Or maybe she had been inflicted with something of a magical origin? Sighing, the Valkyrie composed herself in preparation for a lengthy explanation.

"I had little choice in the matter of contact, lady. Unless you wanted to get torn to shreds, limb from limb by those metal beasts and strewn across the castle grounds." Okay, maybe she was being overly graphic on purpose, but she wanted to stress the point of how much danger the lady may have been in. "As for who I am, it should be made clear that I am a Valkyrie, not a demon. My name is Lily." She turned slightly in her spot, gesturing to the gardens below just as the grimwires burst through with a horrific squeal of metal. They swarmed the garden, as if on a patrol.

"That, is a grimwire," Lily pointed. "This is Lorevale Palace. Or it used to be. And, no, you haven't been kidnapped. As I said, you could have been killed. I don't know who or what this hell is but it most certainly isn't here." Crossing her arms, Lily watched with mild curiosity as the lady seemed to grow more hysterical by the second.

"Anything else you'd like to ask?"

From what he hoped to be the safety of concealed in some bushes, Ranec watched as a woman in a while gown prepared to meet her fate at the fangs and claws of those…creatures. Certainly they were not anything he had seen before, nor even heard of, but they resembled wolves, which meant he had some idea of how they hunted and acted. At least this was his hope. His makeshift club was clutched tightly in his hand and he braced himself for the charge he fully well expected to do. Only to falter on the first step when he saw…a…woman? But unlike any woman he had ever seen.

Wings like that of some bat came from her back and she….used them? To fly?

If Ranec thought he was in some form of afterlife before he certainly knew this place could not be real. It had to be a dream. Perhaps it was brought on by injuries he suffered following the lion attack? A high fever was known to make one see things that were not there and even talk to spirits. The more he thought on it, the more it made sense and the more it made sense the more he relaxed, which led to his confidence spiking. The hunter, always proud and eager to show off stepped from where he hid behind the bushes and whistled at the beasts that had burst through the gardens and began to snoop about once the winged…woman, stole the other away from their grasp.

“Shí do dooda yináldzid nihí!” he shouted to the beasts, who turned to gaze at him now instead of seek the woman that was no longer within easy reach. “SHÍ DO DOODA YINÁLDZID NIHÍ!” shouted once more with his fist slammed against his chest, arms held out on either side of him in a welcoming challenge to the creatures. There was the smallest and briefest moment when the voice of his father rang in his head. In the back of his mind, along with the thought that this was not a dream, but real and he should not have just taunted said creatures. In that place, his father’s voice spoke to him.

“You pushed too hard.

Elaine darkened at the graphic descriptions of the harm that could of come to her had she stayed on the ground, she felt a stir in her belly, oh god she hoped she didn't throw up that would be mortifying. Still, she listened attentively to whatever answers the woman-Lily- could give. A Valkyrie? The word stirred something in her memory, while she did not have access to the same tutors her male counterparts did, her home library had a wide array of subjects and sometimes she would sneak out with a few less than favorable reading options than her parents would disapprove of. She believed she had come across the word in a anthology of Norse mythology and stories. Could this be perhaps the same species Lily was referring too? The thought alone made Elaine's head swim, the world as she knew it was slowly crumbling around her and she had no time to try and pick up the pieces.

Lily, then pointed towards the gardens where the metal hounds, or Grimwires as she called them broke through the gates making a rather unpleasant sound as they did, Elaine visibly recoiled in shock. The winged maiden continued to explain but as much as Elaine struggled to wrap her head around the strange concepts she found she still believed this was all some sort of dream she was stuck in. It was the only explanation that would let her keep her sanity. Perhaps she would be able to go through with this ordeal if she let herself believe she would wake up from it.

Before Elaine could continue her barrage of questions a whistle caught her attention, a very human like whistle. She pushed herself into the railing attempting to get a good look at what made the noise and saw what looked like a man although his unkempt state made him look half beast himself. He appeared to be calling the Grimwires, but why would he do such a thing? Feeling the panic of potentially seeing someone get ripped to shreds she quickly called out to him, "You imbécile what are you doing! Run before those things tear you apart!" He was yelling at them in a language Elaine did not understand and for a terrifying moment she realized he would not understand her, getting desperate she attempted hand signals to usher him to escape.

Lily whipped her head around to the source of the whistle. Of course there had to be another human to rescue! And as the lady had said, one who was an imbecile. He was standing in challenge, armed only with a stick. A stick!? That was guaranteed to fail. Groaning, Lily realized what she had to do. She stood, balanced atop the rail and furrowed her brow in concentration, drawing a line with her finger through the air. The line took shape and began to pulsate with energy as she did this, glowing slightly. It was usually only in extreme circumstances that Lily called upon her magical storage, it was a process that took a lot of power out of her. Pushing on the line, it separated and she stuck her whole arm inside, searching for something to combat the grimwires.

"Aha! Perfect!" She retracted her arm and the line dissipated; now she was clutching a massive double axe. The blade of each side was the size of her head but she swung it over her shoulder like it was weightless.

"I don't expect you to have any fighting skills whatsoever so watch and learn," she told the lady before taking off, leaving a burst of wind in her wake.

Touching down, the grimwires took notice and of the pack of nine, there were a few who decided she would be more fun to maim than the human man. One clean swipe from the axe and a metal head rolled, sparking with energy. The other two tried to attack from opposite sides but Lily shot upwards, letting them crash into each other and take themselves out. Turning, she saw the rest of the beasts still out for blood. This would be fun

Ranec was pleased when the animals turned to face him, his club at the ready his body dropped down low so that he was prepared to move quickly. He heard, shouting, from he assumed to be one of the women creatures that left the scene though he did not bother to turn his head in her direction. Though, perhaps, he did flex his muscles a bit more and tried to appear even more confident than he already felt. Sure, there was one woman back home waiting for him, but his position and standing in the tribe meant he could have another woman should that be desired. Long as he could care for both women and whatever children they brought to his hearth, they would remain with him.

An overconfident and cocky hunter, such as himself, knew without a doubt that he could care for at least another woman. So, what better time to show off what he can do, than to kill a couple of the beasts that had just terrorized her?

Three of them went for that…thing with wings, who interrupted his private show, but he was not of the mindset to allow it to bother him. The remaining six approached him and he already knew this pack was not whole. They lacked their Alpha, their leader. Without a leader present, he would have an easier job with them. Fist, clenched tight in a ball at his side was brought up to beat three times on his chest. A growl, nearly as good as a real wolf left his lips and as he expected two of the wolves broke off and charged him.

A whopping war cry left his lips as he turned and ran toward one of the nearest stone structures. It was a fountain though to him it was a means of gaining some elevation. This is what he did, though it was in the form of using the solid fixture as a launching point for a backflip over one of the beasts that had charged him; the creature crunched against the solid stone while its friend managed to avoid it, its speed too great to stop in time. Back on his feet and with another wolf on him, him grasped the club between both hands and held it before him, between he and the wolf that growled and started to try and circle him. Skill, born of practical use and the desire to survive he moved with the wolf, like a shadow. Where it stepped, he stepped, when it moved he moved; a silent dance of death that Ranec had no plans on losing.

The barest of hints in the beast’s eye, followed by a shift in weight and the hunter moved in another direction as the wolf lunged for him. Powerful jaws snapped right at his side, the sound one that chilled him to the bone. However, there was no time for fear; instead the club was brought down with all the force he could muster. Right across the head of the beast that yelped when contact was made, the club snapped in two though the beast still stood. And it was ****. The only warning he had was a snarl, then it leaped at him and he had only enough time to bring forth the broken half of the club and fall back to the ground. Atop him to beast landed, there were some struggles, but then both became very still. After a heartbeat or two, Ranec emerged from beneath it, claw marks along his arms, but the piece of the club he had held was now embedded deep in the chest of the wolf.

Victorious he stood, with two slain to count among his kills that day. However, that still left a rather large pack that seemed more than ready to finish where their pack mates had failed.

Elaine looked on in horror as the man ignored her plea instead charging at the beasts with his primitive weapon, she quickly shut her eyes tight expecting the worst possible outcome for him where not even the winged maiden would save him. After some noises of a scuffle she let her self take a peek and was astounded to not only see the brute like man alive but actually fighting the hounds. Lily began moving her finger in the air and Elaine watched stupefied as a mystical glow appeared seemingly out of no where, then she began to reach her hand into the light before pulling out a massive weapon looking thing, it was similar to the tool she had seen the men cut wood with but this one was much more daunting. Then the maiden looked at her claiming to have little expectations of Elaine's skills in combat before assaulting her with wind as she hopped off the railing.

The french woman looked on in annoyance, while she was used to being expected to be weak by men she did not expect a fellow woman to treat her as such as well. Despite her ladylike upbringing she knew she could get "down and dirty" so to speak if need be, while she never truly explored her voice she knew she had power and that a single scream can bring any man to their knees. Perhaps it was time she showed them what she was capable of. "Merde" She softly whispered as she gazed at her white gown, 8 whole shillings it costed her and only to be ruined. With a sigh she leaned down and grabbed the hem tightly and in one swoop tore the fabric constricting her ankles until the dress only came at her knees. It was disgustingly improper for her to show so much skin and to disgrace to such an elegant dress but she knew she would not be able to run in it unless it was shortened. At least her stockings where still in tact giving some semblance of dignity.

With that she quickly ran back into the castle from the balcony door, passing by all the pterified stone figures in order to find the stairwell that led to the gardens. She didn't have much of a plan, in fact she was running on purely Adrenalin all her previous fear only amplifying it. As she ran down the hallway something caught her eye and made her pause for a moment, it was a figure wearing armor casing propped against the wall. More for decoration than anything but there was a sword placed on his hands. Elaine had no training whatsoever in swordsmanship, she had no need for it, but she knew she needed something to defend herself with and swiped the sword from the mannequin. It was lighter than she expected and surprisingly sharp and she quietly thanked Jeanne d'Arc for the luck she bestowed on her.

Running outside back onto the garden Elaine caught a second glimpse of the mess, some hounds where all ready defeated but more still remained. They all seemed to be focused on the other two and hadn't noticed her appearance yet. She clutched the handle of the sword tighter, holding it out in front of her in defense. Nearby she spotted one that seemed to be out of the pack, he was damaged and had sparks flying out of injuries, perhaps this was one that took the blunt of her previous scream? She knew her abilities trespassed sound as with every yelp she gave off waves of kinetic energy, how that affected her enemies per say she wasn't so sure. "Viens ici bête" She shouted gaining it's attention as it began to hobble towards her. It's head jerking side to side in mechanical motions, teeth posed and ready to bite. Wincing she readied her sword and as soon as it came close enough she swung with all her might but the angle was too high and only she only chopped off the pointed ears on it's head and nothing more. Yet, this seemed enough to compromise the beast as it quickly went limp but not entirely dead, it's killer intent was gone and what was left was just a empty shell. "Qu'est-ce qui se passe?!" She cried out.

Wincing when she heard the the crunch, Lily saw the human man's crude weapon as it snapped across the grimwire's head. But, surprisingly, he was not immidiately killed. He held his own. But there still remained a few to fight. Now that the human had lost his weapon, he was the prime target and luck did not smile upon him.

Only one still thought her worth the fight and prowled up to her, seeming deceptively calm. Lily hadn't had a good fight in such a long time. Not since she had last associated herself with humans; now she was itching for a chance to wreck, destroy, attack. It was strange that even after she learned of the true nature of humans, she still felt that instinct of protection. And for strangers such as these.

Lily watched the metal wolf approach, not moving from where she stood, but with sharp eyes for the muscles that would tense before the pounce. There, it's hackles raised, it shifted. But before it could rear it's head and leap, Lily charged it first and slammed her waraxe into it's metal coat, piercing the beast's neck. It whined, a hideous sound, and slumped where it stood, sparks flying from the wound when she retracted her axe.

A yell in a language Lily did not understand. The lady in the white gown had followed her to the fight. And she had brought a sword too, she must have filched it from somewhere in the castle. How was it that could one be intelligent and yet lack any common sense at the same time? But, one poor swing and the beast simply crumpled to the ground, twitching and sparking, alive but somehow completely neutralized. All she had done was cut off it's ears. Strange...

Well, the lady was fine. So Lily drew her attention where it was needed. It was the man who was more of a concern. The last two of the grimwires prowled around him, teeth bared. They were prepared to make mincemeat of him and him being weaponless, they were free to take their time with the kill. Finally, one of them went in for the kill. But Lily was there, standing in the way, her wings extended like a shield, having dropped in from above their heads and shoved the human to the side and out of the way. And thus the beast had jumped onto the way of the axe's blade, it's face cleaved in two. And the final grimwire's fate? A simple slash and it was decapitated. Without addressing either human, Lily took a few steps away and dropped her axe, slumping onto the grass, wings coiled around her. Admittedly, that fight took a lot out of her. But she didn't have to save any more of the human's asses.

Time seemed to slow down for the Frenchwoman, from the moment she felt the cool metal slice across the beast to watching it fall in a useless heap on the floor. She was stunned, the shouts and clatters of background fighting noises melting together until it was no more recognizable than a small hum in the back of her mind. She let the blade fall to her side, her grip on it wavering in favor of putting her full concentration on trying to decipher what just happened. Daintily and a little unsure she began to close the distance between her and the beast, stepping over the fallen sword and crouching warily next to the grimwire. Elaine took the rare opportunity to try and study the beast, first relying on visuals alone but once she felt it wasn't going to reboot anytime soon she added touch to the mix. It had fur strangely enough but if felt...wrong in a way. The fibers too wiry it's spark less eyes to glassy, not to mention the clear gaps in it's body where strange plastic looking tubes replace any organic insides the wolf creature should of had.

Eventually, her eyes trailed over the empty sockets where two upright ears used to be. They had slid off with some resistance as well, more than normal cartilage should of given to a sharpened sword. Her fingers neared the area pulling away the tuffs of fur to reveal more of the plastic tubes but these where noticeably damaged, some of the copper innards spilling out. A few sparks where enough to scare her hand away but the gears in her head where far from stilling. Somehow she knew the ears had a role to play in it's demise, no way such a small injury could take down a beast but then again this was no ordinary monster. She wasn't completely set on her theory however but perhaps her new friends could add to it's testing.

"Lily! Aim for their ears I believe it might be a weak-" As Elaine turned to face her companions she quickly came to a stop as she realized they had already taken down the last enemy. The woman watched silently as the Valkyre slumped down seemingly worn out from the battle. Elaine bit her lip and collected her sword before slowly making her way over to the woman, the battle was still fresh and she didnt want to do anything to distrub the peace. Eventually she settled by slumping down near her, bringing her knees up to her chest, not caring about the state of her dress and manners in that moment. Too wired up to care about anything really. "Are you alright?" She asked after a few moment's of silence, her accent normalizing but still quite thick once her nerves settled.

Lily startled, hearing the lady's voice, so close all of a sudden. Then she relaxed, glancing at her.

"I'm fine. I'd ask but it looks like you're fine too." Lily inhaled deeply before releasing a rather drawn out sigh. She was still loath to trust this human but she did owe an apology or two. "Sorry if I underestimated your fighting skills, you actually did pretty good," she admitted. "And you found a sword," she added, gesturing with one hand to the sword at her side.

Sighing again, she ran a hand through her hair and stood, stretching her arms above her head.
"Now, I just have one question. What were you doing coming here? No offense but practically everyone left knows that coming out here is suicidal at best. Haven't you seen all the pretty statues?" Lily couldn't keep the bite out of her tone. Even as distant as she tried to be, she didn't care to see any more calamity.
