Race to the throne OOC

The hubbub around the royal castle of Ariantha was enormous. Servants, merchants, knights, craftspeople and even a few nobles made there way in and out of the castle. Around the outer wall, a practical city of tents had sprung up, pushing wares from the finest cloths to grimy good luck trinkets. Noise from hundreds of voices filled the air, peppered with the sounds of animals and wagons. The whole area was seeing more life and people than it had since soldiers assembled for the last war, some half a dozen years ago. But this was a happy occasion- or at the very least, a festivity.

For an entire week, The royal castle would be filled with festivities. It was an event that people had waited on with baited breath. For one, the purchases the castle made would greatly help the finances of the region. However, it would also draw more people into the area. All those with royal blood were required to attend, but many others would come, too: knights, servants, and even commoners on the trip of a lifetime, some who would come even from the other side of the kingdom. The celebration was this: Ariantha was on the cusp of the biggest decision for the next generation or so. King Peter the Third was finally naming his heir apparent from the pool of eligible royals. The decision may have lain in his hands alone by law, but that didn't keep people from worrying and agonizing over the decision. In fact, many did everything in their power to influence his choice in one way or another. After all, it was a decision that would affect them for the remainder of their lives.

Yes, it was official: King Peter was naming his heir apparent. A month ago, he'd made the announcement, to allow time for messengers and travel. In fact, his court had finally managed to force his hand in that matter- he'd long claimed the excuse that he wanted to see the possible heirs age and mature more. Ariantha had unusual succession laws: anyone- with no discrimination by gender- who was under the royal family crest was eligible for selection. Due to a royal marriage, the country just due north- Calderonia- was also under the royal family crest. Therefore, while it certainly wasn't a large pool of people to select from, it also certainly wasn't left only to the king's children.

At the end of the week, the king would make his final announcement. In that time, he would watch, listen, and make his final decision. Then there would be a parade in the city, and the heir would be presented to all on the balcony of the gatehouse tower. Usually, the heir was expected to make a short speech. Anyone was allowed into the outer courtyard at that time, and it would be awash with commoners, who typically made their favor or disfavor clearly known.

Today, the nobility and especially those under the royal crest- the guests of honor- were set to arrive. Many of those who needed to travel to the royal castle were from Calderonia, but there were also the nobles who typically tended to their lands, those away with the army, and various people who'd been on voyages. Those employed at the castle were incredibly busy; however, the nobility was, on the whole, no less so. Most hoped to make a good impression on the king. During the day, those coming from elsewhere would arrive, and those already at the castle would abandon their daily routines. It was around nightfall that the festivities were set to begin. At that time, the intrigue and political maneuvering was also due to begin- if it hadn't already.

Required reading:

rules | +
  • Your characters should all have a stake in who gets the throne. It makes for a much more interesting role-play!
  • Post your character sheet here first, and wait for your character sheet to be approved before posting in the IC. Then, I'll either approve it or make a couple suggestions on your character sheet. Nothing draconian, I promise, and I'll be fast.
  • Let's try to post at least once every 3-4 days, so we can keep it moving. If you get busy and there will be a delay, let us know here in the OOC that you'll be gone and how soon you expect to post.
  • Although this rp is set in an alternative universe, it is a medieval-esque setting, so nothing obviously anachronistic, like cell phones.
  • As many characters as you like.
  • No posting order.
If anything turns out to be problematic, I may add rules later, but I'll let people who've joined know here and via pm.

Title and Name: King Peter Lyons III

Castle role: King Regent of Ariantha

Gender: male

Age: 34

Physical appearance: Peter has a long face and dark hair that is already greying. Gauntness shows about his face, though he wears padded clothing to hide it in his form, and his expression always seems slightly pinched.

In line for the throne: no

Personality: He can be harsh when he feels he needs to be, but really he has a very soft spot for his family and youth, especially those who show him affection or need his help. In fact, he is known for the orphanages he founded and funded as well as those he brought into the castle. It was said that he wouldn't turn an abandoned child away, and once that became a rumor, more children were brought to the castle doorstep.
While he is a very loving person, if you cross him, he is very slow to forgive and he never forgets. Break his trust, and expect him to never fully give it again.

History: Peter was the second child of the Duke of Ranneluc, the younger brother to Queen Regent Abigail Lyons. He always believed that his older sister, Margaret, would be queen next. She was a fiery woman whom he loved and admired with his whole heart. A brilliant strategist, witty courtier and athletic knight, everyone knew that Abigail favored her as the next in line, especially obvious as Abigail never had children of her own. War broke out with the country to the east, Morolia, when Peter was twelve. Maggie was 20 and more than ready to take on a commanding role in the army. Before she left, Abigail quietly name her the crown princess and made her commander of the forces. In the end, Maggie's battlefield strategies turned the tide of the war, but at the very end, she was a casualty, struck in the stomach. It was a traumatic time for Peter and his family, for she lingered long enough to be brought home alive from the front.

Peter had always been a kind and compassionate child, but it was after Margaret's death that he became truly sensitive. He became afraid of physical activity and began to hate hunting. He couldn't stand to hear the creatures cries. His father forced him to go on hunting trips, and this did not backfire: it desensitized him somewhat, though he'd never have a love for the activity. He began to truly deliberate before he acted or spoke. At first, people thought he simply had withdrawn into himself, become a quiet child, but his aunt noticed his newfound eloquence and occasional insights. At first, she'd begun to favor his younger brother Edward, because Edward had some of the passion of his older sister, but she changed her mind, and two years after Maggie's death, she named the fourteen year old Peter crown prince.

When he was sixteen, he married Duchess Mariana Solis of Andarros, the daughter of the king of Morolia. It was an arranged marriage, but Peter was truly fond of his wife. The court was less fond of the duchess. She was only fifteen, barely spoke English, and brought a very large retinue with her. Many people felt that she didn't want to be at English court, and some believed she was spying and plotting against them. Peter thought he understood her, and he thought he saw loneliness. The two got along very well, and enjoyed one another's company.

When Peter was 25, Abigail died and he became king regent. He implemented many policy changes, including downsizing normal castle staff to have more money for charity. His skill at bookkeeping helped him to more efficiently allocate funds, and while he relegated many of the tasks, he always checked over the bookkeeping. At the age of 27, Mariana hurt herself in a riding accident and died. If losing his wife wasn't enough, Morolia claimed that her death had been staged and was really a murder, using the excuse to attack. Peter did the best to bring Ariantha through the war, feeling lost and wishing he had his sister's guidance. In the end, the counsel of a knight by the name of Sir Gary Sterne kept them from complete devastation, though they did have to secede a small region to Morolia.

In the next six years, he watched his children grow and tried to do his best for them and his kingdom. He never remarried nor entertained the idea. Now, his court has forced his hand in naming his heir, so the festivities are begun.

How much backstory for Calderonia has been set up because I was looking to take the crown prince of Calderonia and was wondering my boundaries when making his history.

Edit: If you don't have much I kind of already made the characters so if you want to look over them you can tell me if they work cause I would rather not ret-con this much backstory.

Edit 2: I posted them here so you can look them over.

Title and Name: Crown Prince of Calderonia Gabriel Lyons IV
Castle role: Crown Prince of Calderonia
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Physical appearance: Usually wearing his ornate yet practical armor, Gabriel rarely is not dressed for a fight. Due to his travels as a soldier the few times he is not in armor his clothes are usually more practical than appropriate of his station. He stands 6' 1" tall with brown hair and brown eyes.

In line for the throne: yes
Personality: To the public as a brash man he has a tendency to act more like a soldier than a royal. He is meticulous and calculated making him a deadly commander and an even deadlier politician. Due to his practical nature he tends to shun the more colorful displays of wealth. He has earned himself popularity amoungst the common people of Calderonia with his donations of much of his personal wealth to improve the infrastructure of the cities of Calderonia.
History: The eldest son of the king of Calderonia, Gabriel was expected from a young age to be named Heir apparent. This changed however when he was 10 and his younger brother, showing promise in stewardship, began being groomed to be heir over him. At the age of 15, tired of being shown up by his younger brother, Gabriel packed what he could carry from the castles armory and rode east to prove himself as the rightful heir to the throne of Calderonia.
Shortly into his travels he met Rafiq and the two began to travel together Rafiq acting as a guide for Gabriel. During their travels they gained a reputation as mercenaries due to their being forced to use their skills with swords to earn the money to eat and pay for a place to sleep most nights. At the age of 18 veterans of the recent wars in the east began to flock to Gabriel as he began to form a mercenary company earning money destroying bandit camps and protecting trade caravans. With his new soldiers Gabriel formed the Iron Wolves a mercenary company that would become his personal guard upon his return to Calderonia.
After years of adventuring across the desert sand, at the age of 22, Gabriel returned to the capital of Calderonia with his Iron Wolves in tow some 10,000 strong. Shortly after his return Gabriel demonstrated to his father the fruits of his labors using a vast majority of his wealth from his adventures to improve the many cities in the kingdom as well as demonstrating the skills of his Iron Wolves. Shortly after his return Gabriel took his place as the Crown Prince of Calderonia well his younger brother was given a duchy to not waste his training over the last 12 years. Over the course of the next few years the Iron wolves slowly replaced the Royal Guard for Calderonia using their position as the crown prince's personal retinue to earn them this position.

Title and Name: Rafiq Hakim
Castle role: Gabriel's Adviser and Bodyguard
Gender: Male
Age: 43
Physical appearance: Age has began to catch up with Rafiq, His hair being mostly grey, having wise brown eyes and wrinkles beginning to show on his ageing face. Similarly to Gabriel, Rafiq is rarely seen outside of his armor and without a sword at his side.
In line for the throne: no
Personality: Calm and kind, his experience and age can be seen in who he is. Usually stuck trying to rain in Gabriel's youthful arrogance.
History: Little is know about Rafiq's past prior to meeting Gabriel other than he grew up in a small village in the eastern deserts and later joined the military before becoming a wanderer. An extremely experienced warrior and leader Rafiq is the defacto leader of the Iron Wolves serving as Gabriel's bodyguard and in charge of his security. In recent years, due to age, he has taken more of an administrative role leading the Iron Wolves rather than leading as a soldier.
IRON WOLVES

Consisting of veterans of the recent wars in the deserts of the east, the Iron Wolves is more a military order than a mercenary group. The Iron Wolves highly value loyalty and honor above all else taking their new position as the defacto Royal Guard of Calderonia very seriously. Most members bear their signature halberd as their weapon of choice however the small amount of Calvary they have tend to use swords and bows. Though most are highly experienced veterans they continue to train intensively to prove their strength amoungst their own ranks.
