Shortly after the final lines of FMA:B are spoken, with Edward on the train and Alphonse out studying Alkahestry. Truth contacts the duo telepathically and they find themselves in front of the Gate.

Truth explains how he has been spying on an entirely different world vastly more advanced technologically than their own. He shows them a vision of Bruce Wayne/Batman..the man who they will encounter and learn about first.

They agree to Truth's terms, in exchange for Ed's leg and alchemy being brought back when they enter the DC Universe, they must help this 'Batman' in his heroics.
