Character sheet details

Background: The background will determine your character's initial skills and the skills they can purchase with skill points in the future. The background is just a guideline for you to fill out as you wish.

Reformed Burglar

A product of the streets, you once made your living from the carefully hidden savings of your fellow citizens. Age eventually brought with it compassion, however, and you were forced to confront the suffering you'd brought upon your victims. Now, determined to pay back your debt to society, you've chosen to direct your efforts to solving the most heinous crimes in the city.

Archetype: Very Tough.

Initial Skills: Intimidation, Interrogation and Lock Picking.

Disgraced Doctor

Although not born into riches, it didn't take you long to achieve them for yourself as a successful doctor. It took you even less time to lose it all, when you refused to declare that a murder victim had died of natural causes. You made some powerful enemies and lost your wealth and your career. Never one to be easily beaten, you've started a new career as a private detective.

Archetype: Very Smart

Initial Skills: Hair Analysis, Thread Analysis and Footprint Analysis

Retired Lawyer

After years of working as an attorney, you have a knack for changing other people's minds, without their realizing they've changed at all. Unfortunately, you have a bit of a gambling problem, and you seem to have squandered away your retirement savings. So, you've decided to go back to work as a private eye. You figure it will be a relief to make a living by finding out the truth, rather than by pretending you already know it.

Archetype: Very Charming

Initial Skills: Sweet Talking, Rule Bending and Flirting

Disillusioned Police Detective

You used to be a rising star in the city police force. You made detective young, and realized your life's ambition when you were transfered to homicide. It didn't take long after that before you realized just how few murders were actually solved in this city. Corrupt cops and ineffectual city officials made doing your job almost impossible. So, you quit the force and went into business as a private eye.

Archetype: Tough and Smart

Initial Skills: Interrogation, Footprint Analysis and Stress Detection

Freelance Investigative Reporter

Trained as a writer and a journalist, your real talent has always been in getting to the bottom of things other people want to keep covered up. Your blunt writing has earned you the ire of the editors of all the papers in town, so you're not selling many stories these days. Luckily for you, the word has gotten out that you're a pretty good detective. Welcome to your new career.

Archetype: Smart and Charming

Initial Skills: Thread Analysis and Sweet Talking

Moonlighting Dilettante

Your wealthy parents have always considered you to be a failure, so even if you are broke, there's no way you're crawling back to them now. Between your genteel upbringing, and the degenerates you've chosen to spend your adult life around, you've learned how to deal with all types. Determined to make a success of yourself without your parents' help, you've decided to try your hand at being a private eye.

Archetype: Tough and Charming

Skills: Judge of Character, Sweet Talking and Interrogation

Archetype: The Archetype will determine which skills your character can purchase. Combined Archetypes are able to purchase skills from both the Archetypes they gather.

Tough Archetype: Tough detectives are better at learning skills like Interrogation and Intimidation to help them deal with uncooperative suspects and witnesses.

Smart Archetype: Smart detectives make good use of the crime scene. They are good at learning skills to help find and analyze evidence. Examples of smarts based skills are Hair Analysis and Hand Writing Analysis.

Charming Archetype: Charming detectives have good insight into people and have an easier time learning skills such as Sweet Talking and Rule Bending.

Skills: Skills are divided by Archetype, and can be used by the detective to interact with the crime scene, witnesses or suspects.

Toughness Skills

Interrogation (7 skill points) - Gives you a chance to convince an uncooperative suspect to answer more questions

Intimidation (11 skill points) - Gives you a chance to convince an uncooperative witness to answer more questions

Stress Detection (7 skill points) - Detect when a suspect is about to stop answering questions

Lock Picking (12 skill points) - Pick Locks in suspects' houses when they are not home

Pick Pocketing (12 skill points) - Gives the Detective the ability to try and search a suspects' pockets for some revealing clues

Trap Detection (12 skill points) - Alerts the detective for the presence of natural and man-made dangers

Smarts Skills

Hair Analysis (8 skill points) - Allows you to spot out of place hairs at the crime scene

Thread Analysis (9 skill points) - Lets you find suspicious threads at the crime scene

Hand Writing Analysis (13 skill points) - Gives you a chance to tell if any piece of hand writing found in the crime scene was written by a left or right handed person

Footprint Analysis (12 skill points) - Gives you a chance to determine if a footprint found in the crime scene came from a heavy person or a slim one

Research (13 skill points) - You can find useful information about cases in the Hall of Records, located in City Hall

Charm Skills

Sweet Talking (9 skill points) - Gives you a chance to convince an uncooperative suspect to answer more questions

Rule Bending (9 skill points) - Gives you a chance to convince an uncooperative witness to answer more questions

Flirting (7 skill points) - Increases likelihood of success when using Sweet Talking or Rule Bending on a member of the opposite sex.

Judge of Character (10 skill points) - Tell whether a suspect or witness is more likely to respond well to Charm or Toughness

Hypnotism (12 skill points) - Allows the detective to attempt to hypnotize a suspect or a witness to get them to reveal the truth about a point they are probably lying about

Underworld Connections (17 skill points) - Gain the connections necessary to track down somebody who has gone into hiding

Remaining Skill points: Each character will receive 15 skill points to spend on skills as the story begins (added to the Initial Skills). As they solve cases, they will be awarded new skill points here and there. Keeping track of these will help you purchase new skills for your detective.

Contacts: Through favors to the people who own businesses in the city, the detectives can have them as contacts. Contacts will answer as many questions as the detective asks, and if they charge for services, the detective will get them for free. Each detective can have two contacts max. One 'clue' contact (Hair, Footprint, Handwriting etc) and one 'regular' contact (a person who won't help them with physical clues, but will be able to help out with alibis and hints.

Dice rolls for skills

Some skills will not require a dice roll for success; other will. Dice rolls will be specified here.

Standard roll is 1d10. Difficulty means you have to get that number or higher for success.

Ex.: Difficulty 6. If you roll 1-5, you fail. Anything from 6 up will give you a success.

Toughness Skills

Interrogation - Difficulty 6.

Intimidation - Difficulty 6 for male subjects, 5 for females.

Stress Detection - Difficulty 5.

Lock Picking - Difficulty 5.

Pick Pocketing - Difficulty 5 for still target, 7 for moving target.

Trap Detection - Difficulty 5 in normal conditions, 7 in the dark or if the detective doesn't have a good visibility.

Smarts Skills

Hair Analysis - Difficulty 5.

Thread Analysis - Difficulty 5.

Hand Writing Analysis - Difficulty 5.

Footprint Analysis - Difficulty 5.

Research - Doesn't require a roll. If the person researched hasn't emerged on the case yet, it will fail. The detective can return as many times as they want.

Charm Skills

Sweet Talking - Difficulty 5; Difficulty 4 in members of the opposite gender if the character has the Flirting skill.

Rule Bending - Difficulty 5; Difficulty 4 in members of the opposite gender if the character has the Flirting skill.

Flirting - no roll, acts as a 'supporting' skill.

Judge of Character - Difficulty 5.

Hypnotism - Difficulty 5, Difficulty 7 for a clearly unwilling subject.

Underworld Connections - no roll necessary.

Name: Jonathan Irons

Age: 45 (looks older)

Description: 5'11, undefined weight, dark hair, spiked in gray here and there, dark blue eyes.

Personality: A little grumpy most of the time, specially when people try to get him to talk about his past. Deep down inside, Jonathan is a good guy, though his moral code is questionable, and feels really strongly about making sure his 'kids' are safe.

Position in the agency: Director

Background: Reformed Burglar

Archetype: Very Tough

Skills: Intimidation, Interrogation, Lock Picking, Pick Pocketing

Remaining Skill Points: 3

Contacts: None yet

Brief history, including how they came about the agency: Jonathan was born into poverty, and his entire early life was passed on the streets. From an early age, he learned how to lie, con and steal to get what he wanted. At 18, he had already known the inside of a jail cell and the receiving end of fists, firearms and knives. Yet, he had survived and thrived in his criminal activities, to the point where he no longer needed to go out there and face danger himself. After he had made enough money, and his conscience started bugging him - stealing to keep alive is one thing, doing it to become rich is another business -, Jonathan decided he would turn his life around. He left his criminal activities to his closest underling and retired. After less than a year, Jonathan got bored, and decided to try his hand on the other side of the table. Due to his past, he will keep the agency away from his former friends, and focus on other kinds of cases.

Relevant details about the character: Jonathan loves to hang out at the local speakeasy, and most of his contacts are made there. He is very loyal to his detectives, but also to the friends he made while in his criminal career, and tries to balance both loyalties in the best possible way for everyone involved.

Name: Constance Doyle

Age: 23

Description: Around 5' tall, lean, agile on her feet.

Personality: Stubborn would be an understatement to describe Constance. She has her own way to do things, and she considers it to be right. She also has a strong sense of justice, though what she considers fair is not always what the law would.

Position in the agency: Detective

Background: Moonlighting Dilettante

Archetype: Tough and Charming

Skills: Judge of Character, Sweet Talking, Rule Bending and Interrogation

Remaining Skill Points: 6

Contacts: None yet

Brief history, including how they came about the agency: Constance was born to a self-made man, Jefferson Doyle, and his spoiled high society wife, Melissa Rubenstein Doyle. Both her parents were always very demanding, but in different fields. Jefferson expected his daughter to be an academic genius. Melissa expected her to be the jewel of their niche in high society. As it happens, Constance was neither. Constance was smart, but the pressure put on her made the girl forget pretty much everything for the important tests, getting mediocre grades at best. She was vivacious and somewhat charming, but not in the way her mother wanted, as high society bored Constance to tears. As soon as Constance graduated high school and came into some money - not much - her grandmother had left her, she kissed her parents good bye and went on about her business. After a few mishaps, and losing a big chunk of her money to a con guy, Constance decided she would devote herself to some moonlighting as a detective. Running into Jonathan around the time he was opening his agency, Constance asked for a spot and a chance to prove herself, and has been working under the grumpy director ever since.

Relevant details about the character: Constance is extremely devoted to Jonathan, even though they bicker a lot. She does not approve of his drinking, and he has little patience for her 'know-it-all' attitude.

"Now darling, where's the fun in that?"

Name: Esha (Ee-shah) Mati (Mah-tee)
Age: 27 years old, as of December 10th
Description: An East Indian woman with a flair for coats, large hats, and makeup. At first glance, seems more of a 'damsel in distress' type. Her most noticable features are a sharp nose and cheekbones, and large, deep brown eyes. She is 5'8".
Personality: Esha is a force to be reckoned with, changing her values and style almost by the hour. She is very lazy, doing the minimal amount of work on things she doesn't enjoy, such as paperwork or physical labour. Otherwise she is a relatively reliable worker when examining evidence or performing her favourite task, interregation. She has a quick wit and a light-hearted attitude, often looking at the bright side of things, either to make her workload seem smaller, or because she is simply an optimistic person.
Despite this, Esha is quite kind-hearted, and believes in fairness for all. Her pet name for friends is 'darling', a term she can deliver with doting lovingness or harsh annoyance. She is adept in analysing people and also in empathizing with their situations. She doesn't suffer fools and can be quite blunt if she doesn't check herself, which sometimes put her off as cruel or unforgiving.
Esha is most definitely a lover of fine and extravagant things, most of her money going into clothes and jewelry. Although money these days is scarce, as well as exotic or expensive goods, she still seems to retain a look of grandeur, having a talent at making do with what she has.
While she is not disturbed by gore or violence, almost to the point of disturbing indifference, Esha has a fear of deep water, which in certain situations can paralyze her.
Position in the agency: Detective
Background: Freelance Investigative Reporter
Archetype: Smart and Charming
Skills: Thread Analysis, Sweet-talking, Judge of Character
Remaining Skill Points: 5
Contacts: None
Brief history, including how they came about the agency: Esha was born in New York, her mother dying shortly after her birth. She was then raised only by her father, editor for a popular newspaper.
When Esha was eight, she fell into the Hudson River and almost drowned, traumatizing her. Since that day she has refused to go near bodies of water of any kind, and can be brought to hysterics through this flaw.
Her education on mathematics and science was quite limited, most of what she has ever learned coming from her father. She had a good understanding of the functions of people and writing, and so, with connections from her father, began the career of journalism.
At the age of twenty two she was engaged to a man her father didn't approve of. Two months into their engagement, the man went missing, and through Esha's investigation, assisted by Lonely Star Agency, it was found that he had been murdered by her own father. She rarely speaks of this man, her father, and many different points in her life.
Years after convicting her father of murder, she worked on another homicide piece, which sparked an interest in that field. Desperate to save her writing business, which had been failing over the years, she joined the Agency.
Relevant details about the character: None at this point

@Cotton: She's great, just a note on contacts: As of now, none of the characters will have them, they'll be won over by favors they'll ask each (individual) characters. The favor cases are the only ones the character (not the agency) will take over.

Another note on how contacts are acquired:

Every now and then (at random moments), one of the characters will get a note from a citizen asking for a favor. This favor is a case the character must solve alone. If they don't want to do that citizen a favor, they can pass it to another detective and wait for a note from the citizen they DO want as a contact to come along. Every favor gives your character something nice - an extra Skill Point, a special piece of equipment, or, after a number of favors done to the same person, you get them as your contact. Once you take on the case, though, you can't pass it on.

Name: Lance Walker

Age: 34

Description: Too skinny and too tall. Lance is constantly told to put some meat on his bones. While he usually slouches, he is 6'5" when he bothers to straighten out. He has carrot orange hair and pale skin you can see all the veins in. His eyes are a startlingly bright blue. His hands are bony and large.
Clothing wise, Lance dresses almost exclusively in work attire- collared shirts, a wrinkled tie, and brown pants. He constantly wears huge multi pocketed brown trench coat. For shoes he favors comfortable dark brown dress shoes. It's a rare sight to see him in anything besides this ensemble- it's a popular bet at the office that he only owns a multitude of the exact same outfit, one for every day of the week.

Personality: A relaxed man who comes across as a bit vague and preoccupied, Lance hides a clever brain behind a blank expression. While friendly, he keeps few people close. In fact, few in the agency know any details whatsoever about his past or even his current situation. However, despite this, he is willing to risk life and limb for people- even if he probably shouldn't.

Position in the agency: detective

Background: Disillusioned Police Detective

Archetype: tough and smart

Skills:
Interrogation - Gives you a chance to convince an uncooperative suspect to answer more questions
Footprint Analysis - Gives you a chance to determine if a footprint found in the crime scene came from a heavy person or a slim one
Stress Detection - Detect when a suspect is about to stop answering questions
Research - You can find useful information about cases in the Hall of Records, located in City Hall

Remaining Skill Points: 2

Contacts: N/A

Brief history, including how they came about the agency: Lance was born in Philadelphia. His family was dirt poor, and while Lance was an only child, he lived in a crowded apartment with many of his cousins.
His family basically ensured his survival but not much else. He got himself through school and entered the police academy and worked there for several years.
However, when he got to homicide, he and his partner encountered a messy case- a double homicide. His partner used dubious tactics to extort evidence from a key witness, closing the case on the killer. After they were sentenced, however, the witness was discovered dead- he had killed himself, leaving behind a note that explained that there had been an accomplice he had concealed, and the killer, while still guilty, had not been alone in his actions. Consumed by his own guilt for not revealing it, the witness killed himself- but didn't say who the accomplice was.

The police had no idea who the accomplice could be. Lance couldn't allow himself to close the case, and dug deeper. However, as he dug, he began to be threatened and realized that he had to leave town. It was for the best, as he decided he couldn't stay on the force. He cut all ties with anyone in town and left for New York in the dead of the night. Untraced by his enemies, he joined the Lonely Star Detective Agency. He still looks for leads on the old case.

Relevant details about the character: Lance is an insomniac, a smoker,
eats poorly, and generally has a lot of bad habits. He is also stronger than his frame would belie.

Will we be establishing basic pre-roleplay relationships between everyone's characters? c: e.x: Bob wouldn't like Ed because Ed is cocky, Ed would probably hang out with Trevor because they're both in the same field of science.
I like to know that my character's stance towards someone else's character works with them, y'know?

Yes. Unless the character is just getting to the agency (which is possible, but would leave them hanging outside the cases for a while), they will have at least some knowledge of others.
