Background
A mere century ago, a cataclysm known as the Greater Mistake rent the Earth’s crust from its core. The crust split into smaller factions during their initial upwards ascent forming thousands of islands of varying sizes. Some would be the size of a house while others could house an entire city on top of it. All of this was due to a formation of crystals which repulsed themselves away from the Earth’s molten core. As time went by, mining operations for crystals began and as the amount of raw crystals dropped in an island, it would sink lower towards the sea of molten rock below. The crystals are what keep the landmass afloat, its height relevant to how much crystal is left to support the weight of the land.

During the Greater Mistake, the resultant explosions and the exposure of magma caused an endless supply of soot which blotted out the sun. Thus, other than the occasional ray of sunlight through the Smog layer, the only source of natural light comes from the sea of molten rock below.

Our characters begin their story in the town of SteelShire.

SteelShire
Expand to Read | +
Steelshire spans with a surface area of roughly eight hundred square kilometers of land area. Almost a century after the Great Catastrophe, the city has ran its natural course of being one of the world’s largest metal manufacturers. The factories numerous, their furnaces burning ceaselessly as the shift changes from day to day, the ingots brought to the forges which breathe shape into the metal. As much crystals has been harvested without endangering the floating landmass it is on from sinking into the sea of molten rock and flames or causing the streets to be shrouded in the toxic fumes rising from the surface of the magma.

Around the age of 5, Casters would sift through the schools in searched for those talented in the Arcane Arts. After their compulsory elementary schooling, the children are allowed to choose between working in the forges or a workshop for money or attending advanced classes, at a price of course. A compulsory military sorting is then performed at the age of 18 for all able-bodied citizens, who will be sorted into the military vocations and divisions based on the sorting results.

At times, the smog level may rise to cover the streets of the city, which is detrimental and hazardous. Hence the city has iron wrought fences wrapped around the edges or anywhere someone could fall and hurt themselves.

Steelshire is associated with the color light grey.

Redloch
Expand to Read | +
Redloch dominates a large area in the upper atmosphere, spanning over thousands of islands linked with each other with chain and ropes, forming a formation which requires intruders to bypass rock formations which could be housing an entire company of soldiers. Their factories belch grey fumes, infused with the hot embers from their forges which churn out products at an alarming rate. Their military is large, a good estimate of it would be in the tens of thousands range. Their larger ships tend to be blimps with heavy reliance on wind to move them in the right direction, their ships are also known for the use of grappling hooks to "row" their ships into a more desirable location.

They also build and capture bastions on islands to have them act as mobile strong points to reinforce their defensive positions. These bastion islands are often towed along by their blimps.

Their military tactics involve winning with quantity and collateral damage by attacking as often as possible. They have often had skirmishes with Steelshire, mainly over mining locations.

Their faction is associated with the color red.

LightAcre
Expand to Read | +
LightAcre dominates the Stratosphere, a large hulking landmass which was ripped from the earth during the Great Calamity. Its buildings are polished, angular in shape, all part of the architectural plans created by the great minds of the city to form what would appear to be a large pyramid atop the floating island. The city is divided into four quadrants, separated by walls each quadrant is self-sufficient and are all connected in the center where the Clockwork Tower dominates the empty plaza. At every passing second, the moving mechanism at the base of the tower is heard, reminding all of the passing time.

LightAcre has a terribly small population, however, its population has seen a great amount of thinkers and casters who can hold their own against multiple of their kind. As such, they do not have any infantry, instead, they have an additional class, for their Warpieces, known as the Feather class.

They are clockwork automatons, build to learn and evolve with the flow of battle. However, during the development of the Shell used for the Feather Warpieces, the main researcher died. As the man left little research documents, preferring to keep everything in his mind and not letting his students usurping his glory of finishing the Shell's processing. Hence, they move with a rhythm, as intended. What was not intended was for the evolving Shell process to reset themselves. Yes, the Feather classes, and some of their other classes which use the particular Shell experience great improvements to combat, quickly evolved in the field of combat and increasing in speed, accuracy and force until what is known as their Terminus Phase, in which they briefly overload their circuits, rebooting the entire Shell before resuming as though nothing happened.

They are associated with the color gold.

ThorneBlight
Expand to Read | +
ThorneBlight are an unknown species, strongly believed by religious organizations to be the causation of the presence of crystals. They are not human, believed to be of a hivemind, created by plants and creatures which had stayed in areas with large clusters of exposed crystal deposits.
-WIP-

Magic
Expand to Read | +
Magic may only be used by gifted individuals. It is genetic though new Magic users may be born from an unrelated family. Most able-bodied Magic users will become Casters on the battlefield or Arcane Mechanics who work behind the battlelines to further increase the efficiency of the civilization by research and experiments.

Mana may be used by non-Magic users or Arcane systems through the use of crystals, which act as a storage for mana. Machines are usually used to transfer or drain mana from a crystal in another.

Mined crystals usually contain around half of their maximum mana capacity. Crystals also amplify mana and are usually found as a component in a Caster’s arsenal. As such, Casting Gloves have taken succeeded the use of magic wands. Other uses include arcane receivers for rifles which would require the use of mana instead of bullets.

Casting Gloves usually have some sort of recoil dampener and crystal core which will allow the user to direct their Arcane energy outwards, towards their target.

Magic is usually cast as one of the four main elements and two sub elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Wither and Harmonic. The Harmonic element is mainly related to regenerative and linking magic while the Wither element is associated with disruption and decay.

Warpieces & Shells
Expand to Read | +
A Shell is a spherical shells which have Arcane glyphs on their surfaces to produce an Arcane Intelligence (AI). While still primitive, the AI is capable of following commands, primitive damage assessment of attached systems, and self-preservation of itself and its housing system.

A Warpiece is what houses a Shell. They are siege engines usually between the size of a small room to a small house. Their entire form is usually heavily armored and has to have its Shell inserted before being reassembled. It is has a mana reservoir on its upper torso, where a large Crystal array is housed. Power may be inserted by placing Crystals into holders on its back, where it will drain the Crystal of mana and store it in its reservoir. Without mane, the Warpiece and its Shell will not be able to function. They are usually humanoid in form or multi-legged to cross difficult terrain.

Casters who control Warpieces must know some Harmonic spells which can channel one's will into the Shells.

The only playable faction is SteelShire, though I may open up the other factions. There are currently three other combat-able factions, Redloch, LightAcre, and Duskblight.

Redloch favors Fire and Frost magic with overwhelming amounts of infantry. LightAcre favors advantageous terrain and Wind and Earth magic, along with a mechanically advanced army. Duskblight prefers small hit and run operations, Wither magic and terror attacks.

You can be in the military. As of now there are three branches: The Airborne division, The Mining division, The Fortification division.

The Airborne division is usually out hunting or scouting the area around the city and remapping it constantly. They are also the first to set foot on mining grounds before the Mining division can take over. They consist mainly of Casters and Infantry

The Mining division job consists of mainly defending mining locations and routes and a small amount of scouting. They consist mainly of infantry and automatic Warpieces.

The Fortification division is made for pure military defense, they are based in Steelshire and have a heavy composition of Warpieces, Casters and Mechanics.

Name: Olivia Cross
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Faction: Steelshire
Appearance: Short and straight blonde hair. She stands at an equal height of the average male has a lean layer of muscle over her medium frame. Her eyes are a soft brown. Her hair is usually tied up in a short ponytail to prevent it from getting caught in machinery. She wears two Casting Gloves, each is highly articulated to allow her great ease and fluidity when casting spells or just using her arms normally while they are on. The Gloves extend up to her elbows providing her an ample amount of armor against infantry, but is more or less useless against Warpieces at their thickness.

She also carries a rifle slung over her back. A revolver rifle with arcane bullets made to amplify their effectiveness to the amount of mana in the victims' body. This is done mainly be damaging a person's mana circuits and rapidly healing them back improperly, creating a highly ineffective flow of magic in the person's body. It is absolutely useless against Warpieces save for the regular physical damage. The rifle's barrel can be detached and used as a hand cannon instead.

She also carries another handcannon at her side, similar to the rifle, minus the barrel. In addition to the two firearms, she has two short swords, both are curved and are single-edged.
Personality: Olivia is a highly cautious and paranoid character. Opposing that is how demanding she is towards others, this is something she is supposed to have rectified by the end of her Journeyman's training and her graduation as a full-fledged Caster. She often says things which she regrets later, even if the consequences may not affect her too much as she knows that she is wrong but is way too prideful to accept any of her faults.
Occupation: Journeyman Caster
Bio: She grew up in a middle-class family and had a normal education which she later opted to advance into secondary and tertiary education while working in the factories at times to support her education. She did rather well in the semesters leading to her graduation, boosting her confidence in getting a easier promotion in her military career. At the age of 18, she was found to be gifted in magic. She was moved to an Arcane school where she furthered her fundamentals in magic and learned the spells necessary to survive in combat. Once that was done, she joined Judas, who was to mentor and monitor her progress as a Journeyman Caster before allowing her to graduate as a full fledged Caster.

Name: Maximilian Hendrix

Gender: Male

Age: 20

Faction: Steelshire

Appearance:
At 6 feet tall, he stands at just over average male height, though he has a heavier build than most. He has short brown hair, with a line of bare scalp visible above his left ear, the remnant of an old injury. He has black eyes and a square jaw; when he walks he stands stock upright, resembling an infantryman to anyone unfamiliar with him.

Although he was given the standard issue casting gloves of a journeyman-level caster, he only wears one on his left hand, which extends roughly halfway up his forearm before vanishing beneath the steel plate sleeve that is of the same design and thickness as the rest of his attire. His right hand is adorned by a steel gauntlet that features a fine chain mesh around the fingers, allowing for better feeling and grip strength when handling the more physical weapons at his disposal.

A straight-bladed longsword hangs from his left side, and on his other side, always within easy access, a pistol with arcane rounds designed to incapacitate enemies. Upon impact, the rounds would release a powerful electric shock capable of stunning a heavyset man. There is also a small radius of effect, meaning the rounds can incapacitate more than one person at a time if targets are grouped together.
Although the rounds can stun without killing (especially if someone is in the electric shock's range but isn't struck by a round), fatalities are nearly guaranteed if a bullet hits a vital area. The power of these rounds is not substantial enough to do much damage to a Warpiece, however if fired in succession a number of the specialized bullets could potentially slow a machine down due to mana loss.

Personality:
Max is a reserved, quiet man with a tendency towards keeping to himself. In spite of this he is extremely loyal to those around him, and is always willing to take orders without question. His upbringing left him with a determination to do whatever necessary to prove himself, be it to his mentors, his commanding officers, or even just the soldiers fighting alongside him.

He is quick to accept blame when he is wrong, and when corrected he is always willing to put his own ego aside if it means bettering himself as a soldier and a caster. At the same time, injustice of any kind rankles him deeply and he often stands up for the underdogs, having spent much of his life as one.

Occupation: Journeyman Caster

Bio:
Born into a family of accomplished casters living in the shadow of a colossal Steelshire metal processing plant, Maximilian has faced high expectations for nearly his entire life. Unfortunately, although he did demonstrate some ability at the age of 5 when he was tested for it, he was never quite good enough to appease his family (especially his father, Duran Hendrix). When it was time for his apprenticeship, Max was told that although his father (a renowned, retired caster) could have taken him on, the older Hendrix refused to do so, claiming to be "unable to cope with such constant disappointment". A devastated Max left home, determined to prove his family wrong.

After completing his apprenticeship, Max was assigned a specific mentor- a man named Judas, who was stationed out in the airborne division. Max could have gone with a safer, more "behind the scenes" division, but he had heard tales of Judas' ability. The casters he brought up were the best, and if he could ever prove his father wrong, it would be under the tutelage of a master. Even if the airborne division was more dangerous, Max was willing to take that chance.

Learning a simple lesson isn't always simple. Sometimes, you have to slowly lose everything great around you to understand the gravity of your shortcomings. Admit that your egos have grown too large, that you've lost your sense of what you realistically are, and maybe you can repair the road that has broken beneath the weight of your failings. Or maybe you'll just keep going as you've gone, and you'll learn nothing, and eventually, everything around you will become dust. To be honest, that's by far the likeliest of all outcomes.

Count me in! I shall post my OC here, for your consideration:

Name: Carolina "Carrie" Magispark
Gender: Female
Age: 32
Faction: Steelshire

Appearance: Carrie's bodily shape is comely, an average but physically fit hourglass figure. She has long, auburn hair she keeps in a ponytail, causing her attractive but usually unclean face to stand out. She usually dresses in pragmatic cloth items with high wear & tear resistance, and is almost always smudged up with oils and dirt of various kinds. Her toolbelt is pretty standard, though by the attacthed equipment there's no doubt she is gifted with magic. Her plain leather caster's gloves tend to be covered up by utility gloves, but she's not one for fancy dress in either case. When not in her mechanic's attire, she'll be in her medic uniform, covered in sigils, glyphs, icons, and occasionally blood.

Personality: Carrie's dirty and somewhat ragged appearance is backed up by a rather unladylike personality - she can be sweet and feminine, but tends to be loud, aggressive, coarse, and casual. She always walks precariously on the line of insolence when faced with authority, and find formal behaviour and small talk wastes of time. She's ever inquisitive, and if a question pops into her head, she'll ask, search, and experiment until a conclusive answer is given. Her knack for AI programming has earned her renown, though her coarse and aggressive demeanour has earned her an equal amount of infamy.

Occupation: Journeyman Caster (Harmony) Apprentice Caster (Fire) - field medic and ranged support (all depending).

Bio: Having been selected for education in the Arcane Arts at five, Carrie began casting at a very early age. Although her family are almost solely casters, their lack of wealth meant she had to rely on herself when she left school. For this reason, she spent a few years in a workshop before being drafted into the military. Her abilities as a healer were quickly noticed and nourished, and in spite of her nature - or maybe because of it - her aptitude for Harmonic magic soon caught the eye of her supervisors. Being afforded further education by the military, she quickly rose to become a talented programmer and mechanic - allowing her to make a warpiece to provde cover as she provides medical aid to soldiers on the front. for more aggressive assignments, she has knowledge of basic fire magic, though she tends to rely more on hardware to get the job done offensively. Now, she works a jack-of-all-trades role as mechanic, field surgeon and ranged support with the Airborne Division, though her skills all lean towards support.

Warpiece:
Name: Carnivore Mk. II
Sigil: Ethereal Spanner

Appearance: Light humanoid. For a warpiece, it is very small - humanoid in apprearance and 2.8 metres high. Its feet are rigged with deployable supports to brace it when it uses heavy weapons, however, its primary fiunction demands speed and agility in favour of bulk and armour - these traits can be momentarily enhanced by use of certain spells.

Armaments: A pair of twin-linked heavy caliber anti-personell machine guns mounted on the left arm, a reinforced drill on the right, and a high-precision longshot rifle mounted on the right shoulder. Also has flares to confuse hostile systems, and the longshot rifle can be replaced with a light howitzer for heavy assault assignments.

Shell Documentation: Carnivore's shell is programmed with two abilities in mind: target acquisition and prioritization. Its main purpose is th eradication of threats to Carrie, essentially making it a sentry-class shell, though it can be remotely guided to perform more aggresive roles - this, however, means Carrie will not have the prerequisite focus to use more advanced magic. If Carrie should ever fall in combat, its primary programming will have it bring her to the nearest medic, where it will resume its sentry duty. Beyond simple bodyguarding, it is very dependant on Carrie's instruction to function.

Service Record: 8 years, involved in several skirmishes with minor factions. Distinguished itself as a mechanized infantry specialist three years ago, when a minor faction tried bringing the fight into dense woodland on their home isle. Carnivore's light structure and high agility allowed the machine to quickly hunt and destroy opposing infantry with carrie by its side, or even carrying her. One year ago, the machine's weakness became distinct in another skirmish involving enemy armour. The lack of heavy equipment led to the modification earning it the Mk. II designation, which allowed for a swift replacement of the shoulder-mounted marksman rifle in favour of an 87.6 mm howitzer. Tests have shown the machine's ability to handle the new arnament to be satisfactory.

I guess that's it! What'cha think?

*edit* Replaced rocket launcher on warpiece with howitzer, corrected typo.

@Kee, Accepted. Though being in the Fortification division means you'd be more or less in the defense of the city and mining expeditions.

@Grey, Accepted.

@Icaro, PM me or notify me in some way when your CS is done up.

I'll start writing the IC. A new faction will be released shortly as well, standby.

Name: Judas Haas "The Betrayer"
Gender: Male
Age: 52
Faction: Ex-Redloch, Steelshire
Appearance: His greying hair is rather long by male standards, easily being able to touch his ears. He tend to comb his hair back, reminiscent of the time he was a Caster in the Redloch army. He wears plate armor on his chest which extends up like a collar to prevent his neck and chin from being hit by frontal attacks. He also wears plate vambraces with metal hooks at the end to catch onto a bladed attack which could tip things in his favor. He wears a heavy Casting Gloves on each hand despite the fact that he is not ambidextrous.

He wields a flanged mace which he tends to use both hands for but can be wielded in a single hand if he needs to. The amount of force he can apply with the mace is enough to dent or split a Warpiece's armor if he can get a good hit in. Judas is also in possession of a Feedback pistol which does not do much against Warpiece, will cause the Caster controlling the target Warpiece to experience severe discomfort and mana loss.
Personality:While he may not seem like it, Judas is a very high risk, high reward-centric person. He favors being in the thick of things compared to most of the other Casters who prefer to put their men between them and their foes. He has a tendency to seek out enemy Casters on the battlefield to "remove the head of the snake".
Occupation: Caster, Airborne Division, 2nd Company

Howdy, folks. I believe Zenith invited me here. Having finally caught up with the posts and information, I have a few inquiries:

  1. How is Steelshire governed?
  2. Would a character involved in the state's intelligence agency be acceptable?

Steel shire is run by a council of twenty-one who does the plannings of what islands they should take, what they should let go, how much resources go into the war/mining efforts, how much more they should care about their citizens and of course to plan the general course of the island Steelshire sits on.

This intelligence agency you speak of, the closest thing for that would be lone cells operating to sabotage instead of collecting information. They are on their own and will not be in frequent contact with their dispatchers.

I submit for your consideration, my character -- Mary Stalwart.
Name:
Mary "Gun Whisperer" Stalwart

Gender:
Female

Age:
31

Faction:
Steelshire

Occupation:
Wing Sergeant, Sharpshooter / Scout in the Marines branch of the Airborne Division

Appearance:
Mary is a pale-skinned woman of thin build and average height. Her dirty blonde hair reaches her shoulder blades, but is often contained in a messy bun and covered by her military cap, especially when she's on duty. Her cheeks are decorated with freckles. Her slightly sunken, large-lidded, green eyes tend to gaze off into the distance when not otherwise occupied. Mary doesn't generally wear much in the way of makeup, even when she's not working. Her left arm is missing, amputated from a wound sustained in battle years ago. In its place, a steam-powered prosthesis is attached, which she frequently conceals with shirt sleeves and gloves. Her chest never developed far enough to make more than a modest impression on her clothing. The fingers on her remaining, live hand are slightly longer than one might expect for a woman of her size. She has a tendency to look a bit rumpled, wearing uniforms and clothes slightly bigger than her size would dictate, though she keeps clean and maintains good hygiene otherwise.

Wing Sergeant Stalwart usually carries a hunting knife, a pipe, and a pouch of tobacco with her. When on duty, she's rarely far from her heavily modified long-gun, which she has nicknamed and engraved "Ashburn." Its stock is made of walnut, its barrel of double-tempered Steelshire steel, and smithed to the best accuracy of the age by the renowned gunsmith known only as "Alvord". A complicated clockwork of lenses mounted on top of the gun work as a sort of rudimentary scope. Her military uniform and specialist gear include a heavy overcoat with boiled leather plating sewn in, her rank on one shoulder and the Steelshire coat of arms on the other, just over a small patch symbolizing her specialty.

Personality:
Mary is, as many veteran sharpshooters are, generally withdrawn and something of a loner. While not necessarily anti-social, she doesn't generally seek out company, and when she does conduct conversation, she can be rather laconic. That said, she has a habit of singing old shanties with a decent voice, to pass the time while she works, which can sometimes become contagious with the crews of the airships she staffs at poignant moments. She is somewhat self-conscious about her mechanical arm, and she tries to keep it from drawing any attention through concealment. The lack of tactile sense in that appendage, however, means that her motions with it tend to be rigid, staggered, and overly careful. In heated situations, she occasionally forgets her strength with this arm, which can exert bursts of strength several times stronger than the average arm, and possesses a grip as unrelenting as the steel it is made out of. When she is behind the lenses of her long-gun, however, she is practically imperturbable.

Bio:
Born to a single mother, Mary's father -- a drunkard and a rogue -- walked out on her before she was born. Fortunately, her mother, Amy Stalwart, soon met and married the man who would become a much better and more influential figure in her life; her stepfather, Warren DeRodes. Warren was a well respected airship officer in the Airborne division, known for his ability to spot enemy vessels through all manners of interference. He frequently regaled his stepdaughter with his mildly censored tales of conquest in the skies, and promised that one day he'd take her with him. She adored the man, and grew up aspiring to fight Steelshire's enemies alongside him. He taught her how to survive on her own, how to win a fist-fight, and how to fire a gun, despite her mother's constant protests for her safety. As she grew and matured, Warren was gradually promoted, until he received his first Captaincy. He began building his reputation in earnest, as well as his family, gaining Mary two step-brothers. When the council granted Captain DeRodes special honors, they bestowed upon him the rifle Ashburn, and Mary got to be the first one to shoot it.

Adamant in her dreams, at 17, Mary joined the Airborne division, and began training to crew airships. Before she even received her first promotion, however, she received word that Warren's airship was ambushed and shot down by an enemy fleet. Rumors about the incident were rampant throughout the division, many of them pointing to foul play or mutiny. Accounts generally agreed, however, that nobody aboard survived the encounter, and that the airship had plunged into the fiery depths. It devastated her; she had never even gotten to serve on the same ship as the man she'd idolized. Shortly later, Mary began to see and hear the ugly truth about how people felt about her stepfather. She suddenly wasn't being treated with the kid gloves she hadn't been aware were even there. The endemic bribery and nepotism in her profession became more visible than she ever wanted them to be. She could sense groups of influence working to block her progress up the ranks. The world seemed so much darker than she'd been led to believe it was.

The young crewman was found to not have any special talent for crewing airships; she was soon pushed out of any consideration for officer candidacy, and instead groomed for combat. In an age where giant, hulking warpieces dominated the battlefield, this was probably the most dangerous field a magically ungifted person could find herself in. There was little she could do about it, however. With Warren gone, her mother needed to be supported. Her stepbrothers weren't old enough to contribute meaningfully to the household. Like some sort of cruel joke, her talent would eventually be found in her keen sight, and marksmanship. Command immediately put her in harm's way, throwing her into battle after battle, and she took Ashburn with her to help remind her that her stepfather would always be with her. Between the bizarre appearance and action of the modified gun and her habit of murmuring incomprehensible things to herself while lining up absurdly long kill shots, Mary began to earn her nickname, "Gun Whisperer." Some people who fought alongside her swore she was casting a spell on her gun to make it always hit its mark, but she was never found to have any magical talent whatsoever. How she manages to "talk" her bullets into finding their destinations considerably beyond what a gun of that make ought to be able to strike still remains a secret Mary bottles up inside of her.

During one particularly brutal battle, a cannon shot from an enemy warpiece mangled her left arm, which had to be amputated. As the lower officer corps was beginning to realize her value, they elected to make the unusually expensive decision to fit her with a prototype steamwork prosthesis to ensure that she could still shoot her gun. The procedure was intensely painful, leaving her in agony for a month, and the fusion of flesh and steel left disfiguring scars around her shoulder and upper torso. After determined training, however, Mary learned how to control her new arm, and her sharpshooting prowess returned. The metal arm serves as an ever-present reminder of her mortality, and the cruelty of war. Each time she looks at it, she remembers all the pain that military service has caused her. Every time someone looks at it, she feels their judgement of her as a half-machine freak. She soon learned to conceal the appendage as much as possible, and with it, any spark she may have had in her for enjoying life. She now addresses each day as another step toward another battle, and each battle another step toward unavoidable death. This morose outlook has given her a grim inner grip when others lose their cool, allowing her to rally soldiers and airmen when things seem at their worst.

Mary can still be occasionally caught writing letters home. Her remaining family are all that keep her firmly attached to sanity, even during the times when they seem so far away. She imagines fictional days where there will be no need for war, or soldiers, and she will be able to come home. Every night, she dreams about her stepfather, wondering if he would still be proud of her, if he was still alive.

Good to see that you've returned safe and sound, zen. Today/tomorrow (depending on people's timezones) will be tough, but I'll definitely have something posted up by Friday night at the latest.
