The Great Eastern - July 17, 1860

The ship was being prepared for its next trip. She was virtually empty for a vessel that size, but at least there were paying passengers. She was supposed to make the cross from England to North America, and some important people, such as journalists, engineers and even the director of the Great Eastern Railway had decided to take the trip. It should have been a grand trip, but only 35 paying passengers were taking it. With the crew, only 43 people to occupy the massive ship.

Not that her Captain was surprised. Everything seemed to be going wrong with this ship. He was almost surprised that she wasn't at the bottom of some ocean right now. And to make things worse, his crew had gotten so drunk ashore he had seen the need to delay their departure. Just what he needed. Now, though, they were finally in the process of getting the ship ready.

"Hopwood!", the captain yelled for one of his crew members. He didn't want for an answer before carrying on. "How are things below deck?", the Captain continued, wanting to make sure everything would run smoothly in this trip.

Margareth Mills

The young woman was sitting on a bed at a small hotel. She was really upset, as the ship she had bought a passage on, which was supposed to have sailed on the 14th, was now only sailing at the 17th, due to 'technical issues'. Not much more had been informed, but passengers who were already aboard had been asked to go back ashore and wait for someone to contact them so they could go back to the ship.

At least, Margareth thought, she wasn't waiting alone. And, even it was a little late, it would still be a fun trip.

Looking up from her book, Margareth smiled in looking at her companion.

"Excited?", she asked simply. "It should be at any moment now".

Willis had woken up groggily, with his wits scattered and his head hammering. Sitting up with a groan, he rubbed his eyes and tried to piece together what had happened. He remembered the captain saying something about departing, but everything else was fuzzy.

"Well don't you look **** poor." One of his fellow crew members laughed.

"And you don't look any better." Willis replied, trudging to the upper decks, hoping the air would clear his head.

The opposite was true. The sunlight streaming through the clouds nearly caused the man to retreat to the darkness below, but he went on, leaning against the railing as his stomach rolled. Quite a sight, a sailor looking every bit like a seasick dog.

That had been a few days previous. Since then, the crew had gotten more or less in shape, a few continuing  to drink themselves sick even with warnings from the captain and other shipmates. It had finally come the day when they were set to leave on their grand transatlantic voyage. Willis was among the few men milling about the top deck, getting as much time in the fresh air, if one could call it that, as they could, knowing they wouldn't be getting much once they hit open sea.

Hearing his name bellowed by the captain, Willis made his way to the man who was already asking about the state of the lower decks. Stopping in front of him, Willis saluted before making his report.

"She's good to go capt'n. Freshly stocked just this morning, we should be good until we reach the opposite shore with an extra two weeks provisions."

He had overseen the stocking of the coal himself, being one of the few 'lucky' enough to deal with it on a nearly daily basis. Usually it would have been one of the first mates or such making such reports to the captain, but with the number of healthy, and willing crew, the numbers and positions filled were dwindling.

Evenlyn Mills

This was supposed to be an exciting trip. Traveling across the ocean, to see a whole new world! It was stuff the eighteen year old girl was excited about. But Evelyn was also worried. It seemed so odd their trip got delayed. As much money that was spent to create the ship, surely it wouldn't have so many issues. And the fact that for a ship so large, there was hardly anyone on it. Evelyn didn't count many passengers, when she and her companions were told they had to go back ashore until the 'technical issues' were fixed. Actually, she knew most of the people that were on it. It all seemed odd to her.

Evelyn did hope it would be fun. She looked over at at her older sister, Margareth. They were, of course, sharing a hotel room.

"I am but also I am a little nervous. Does it not seem odd to you that there are not many people taking the voyage with us?"

Margareth was two years older then Evelyn and Evelyn thought her sister was pretty wise. She wanted to know what she thought about the whole situation.

The Great Eastern

The captain nodded when Willis said the ship was good to go. Finally, he thought. He was really dying to just get out of there, finish this trip and get back home. Something about this ship made him uneasy.

"Good, I will send word to the passengers, and off we go", the man replied, before turning around and leaning over to shout for some boys he kept around. They were pretty good at delivering messages for a few coins, after all.

Once the boys ran like rats off a sinking ship, the captain retired for a moment to his cabin, to make sure he had everything he needed there.

Margareth Mills

Margareth smiled at her younger sister. She was really happy to have Evelyn with her for a trip. It was always a good idea to do something different, and they should do it before they both got married, after all. That was why Margareth had chosen this moment for their little trip.

Her sister's question made Margareth think for a moment. "It does, but it means we will have a cozier group", Margareth suggested, always trying to look at the bright side. "We might even have a ball or something, and make acquaintance with everyone", she suggested happily. "I am really excited to travel aboard the Great Eastern. Our friends at home will just die when they hear about it".

Once she had finished her words, Margareth was about to mark her book to store it, when someone knocked on the door. "Must be our word to go back to the ship", she commented. "Would you get it, dear?".

Willis waited for any further instructions from the captain before leaving, when he received none, the stoker remained on deck for the time being to enjoy the fresh air as long as he could. He knew that once they set off moments like this would be few and far between as he worked with two other men to keep the engines going. It would be hot, it would be sweaty, and it would be rough at times. Leaning against the railing, Willis watched the boys run off, dodging around the people as easy as you please.

Content with watching the life on the docks, Willis heard some some of the crew emerge from their own quarters, sober, though still suffering from their indulgences. He knew a few wouldn't be coming back, and this troubled him. He had heard enough stories working on the ship to understand why some would turn tail the first chance they got, but he also knew that many of those stories were old wives tales, told late when the nights dragged on. Nevertheless, Willis Hopwood wasn't a strong believer in the supernatural, never had been, and as he liked to put it, never will.

It was hard to believe that someday they would both be married. Evelyn and Margareth were both of that age. Actually, some girls Evelyn knew were already married. They'd have to married off with in the next few years or they would be called old maids. That's why Evelyn was excited about this trip. It would be fun to travel across the ocean with her sister. Before both their lives would be changed forever. Before they knew it, this time of their lives would be over. They would have husbands and have children of their own.

Evelyn nodded her head to Margareth.

"I suppose you are right. I did not think of it like that."

The ship would be cozier. It just felt odd to have so few people on a grand trip. When someone knocked at the door, Evelyn said.

"Yes, of course."

She walked over to the door and opened it.

The Captain was also enjoying the fresh air. He would go to his cabine later, when the ship started sailing, unless someone needed him. Up until then, though, he planned on simply staying there.

When the other crewmen emerged from their quarters, the Captain gave an order here and there, and that was all. He knew most men knew what they were doing.

Margareth smiled at her sister when she said she had not thought of the situation the way she had. She did find it a little odd to have so little people, put it didn't really upset her or make her worry about anything. It would be a fun trip, after all.

When her sister said she would open the door, Margareth nodded. "Thank you, dear", she replied, standing up to see who was actuallyl at the door.

As soon as Evelyn opened it, she could see a boy, probably not older than six, who smiled at her. He had a smirk that made clear he was one of 'those' boys one had to keep an eye on at all times.

"The captain said the ship is ready to go, madam", he told her, wondering whether or not he should ask for a coin or some little treat.

Margareth, from the inside, started moving around. "Thank you!", she replied to the boy. "Have him wait here, Evie, please", the young woman required of her sister.

As the rest of the crew finally emerged onto the deck, the captain gave a few orders but otherwise left them to do their work. Willis cast one last glance down to the busy docks before heaving himself upright and crossing the deck himself. He helped a few of the men with what they were doing to get the ship ready on his way below once again.

As his eyes adjusted to the change from sunlight to the much dimmer lights below deck, Willis didn't stop in his path. Having memorized the route easily he could traverse it blindfolded if he had to. Everything was as it should be, and things were stocked and ready to go.

"All's ready and waitin'." One of the other stokers commented as Willis checked.

"Good to hear." He answered back. He wasn't happy about this trip, crossing the Atlantic. It would be a lot of work, heck, even if they had a full crew it would be hard. Leaning against the wall, Willis sighed and closed his eyes.

"Ready for hell." He muttered.

"In a hand basket." The other stoker laughed, earning a smirk from Willis.

"You can say that again."

Evelyn tried to shake the feeling something would go wrong with their ship. It just seemed so odd that so few people were going on the voyage. But she'd try to view it the same way her sister was. She wanted to have fun. It would probably be one of the last times she and her sister could have fun like this together. Soon, they'd both be married off.

Evelyn smiled to young boy. He was adorable in his little sailor costume. Although the little smirk on his face made her think he was also a troublemaker. But probably a sweet one who would try to talk his way out of trouble often.

"Thank you, young sir."

Evelyn thought she provide him with a coin and small treat. She heard Magareth's request and nodded her head.

"Okay, Maggie."

She said and turned her attention back to the boy.

"Will you please wait a moment? I have something for you."

She told the boy and went to find her coin purse.

The captain was somewhat anxious. There was that sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach he couldn't quite explain. There was something wrong with this ship. Just like any sea man, the captain was superstitious. There were rumors about the Great Eastern, that she brought bad luck within her hull. It seemed as though even passengers knew she was bad.

Oh, well, hopefully they would have a safe and smooth trip, just cross the Atlantic and come back home without much trouble.

With that in mind, the captain started a long round through the ship, to make sure nothing was missing from its place. They would be sailing soon.

---------------

Margareth smiled to the boy as well. He was very cute, indeed, but, knowing children well through having work as a governess for a while, Maggie knew very well how those cute kids with those smiles could be the biggest troublemakers. Still, they were usually sweet ones.

Once she was sure everything she had to take was in her suitcase, Maggie picked it up and went to the boy with a sweet. "There you go as well, young sailor", she told the boy with a grin.

The boy would wait for the coin as well and thank both ladies profusely before running off, quick as a mouse.

Margareth couldn't help but laugh and shake her head.

"Isn't he the most adorable thing?", she asked her sister, while waiting for her to be ready to go.

Willis had slid down the ship's wall, and was seated with his arms over his knees. From this position he watched the other two stokers move from one end of the small room to the other, carrying sacks of coal or armfuls of shovels and buckets with them.

He hoped they would be setting out soon. As much as he hated this ship, he hated being stuck waiting even more. With a groan, Willis got up, dusting off his pants. He paused on his way to the door, something having caught his attention.

"Something wrong Will?" One of the stokers asked, noticing the man standing frozen in place.

Willis shushed him, turning his head to the side slightly in hopes of hearing whatever it was better. A few seconds ticked by as all three men waited, the only sounds being their breath and the usual creaks of the ship down here.

"There it is!" Willis said as a particularly loud thud echoed in the room.

"What the hell?"

"Heck if I know."

"She shouldn't be making those noises unless something's gone and got itself caught." Willis said with a shake of his head, remembering when a couple of rats had gotten into the walls. Trudging back to the top deck, Willis went in search of the captain to ask when they should expect to be leaving.

Evelyn smiled as the adorable boy took off. He was very sweet, but he had that look of a troublemaker. She could see it in his eyes, but she sure he could use his charms to usually get away with little punishment.

Once she was alone again with her sister, Evelyn said.

"Yes, he definitely was. Shall we head to the ship?"

Evelyn asked, ready to go on their adventure.

In the ship, the last preparations were being made, as well as the last checks. Hopefully, the captain thought, they would be all set soon, and leave as soon as possible, to make up for the delay.

Willis wouldn't have too much of a hard time finding the captain, as he was on deck making sure the ship was perfectly fit to go. The last thing he would want was to overlook something and have trouble during their trip. Neptune knew this ship had already gotten a strange enough reputation.

As soon as the captan noticed Willis, he stopped checking a roll of rope and waited, since the lad seemed to want to speak to him.

At her sister's question, Margareth looked around her, just to make sure they were not forgetting anything. Once she was sure, Maggie picked up her belongings and nodded. "Let us go. I cannot wait for the trip to start!", she replied, excitedly. In the ship, the last preparations were being made, as well as the last checks. Once on the top deck, Willis didn't bother waiting for his eyes to adjust fully from being in the deeper parts of the ship before starting his search. Scanning the small group on board, he ruled out people fairly quickly.

It didn't take long for the stoker to locate the captain, the deck being fairly empty with only a few people running around to get things ready. Walking up to the man, Willis saluted him before presenting his question.

"Captain, sir when do you suspect we'll be setting out?" Willis asked. He was getting antsy to be out on the sea once more having spent much of his life doing so.
