Year 1

Long ago, in the place where stone faces were the earth, there lay a woman with a lantern sleeping in a heavy, dreamless slumber. The woman knew nothing. Not of the world. Not of who she was. Not of what would happen next. Not how to speak, to communicate.

One day, the woman woke up. Her eyes were greeted by the sight of others with lanterns stirring and beyond the tiny pool of light, a horizon hidden completely by an endless darkness. A simple white cloth was draped over her, covering her nakedness.

She rose to her feet, securing the cloth around herself, a gentle gust of wind bringing small specks of grey ash from the darkness above. She stared into the darkness, willing herself to see beyond the lit stone faces and was rewarded with the silhouettes of more faces, some larger than normal, covering the earth like small hills, others like boulders, dotting the landscape around them. Her picked up her lantern, holding it up before, noting that it shifted the darkness, or rather the darkness shifted around it. She shifted her footing, stepping on the cracked surface of the ground, avoiding the noses which poked at her soles.

She caught the glance of another, he too was a mystery to her as what lay ahead, What now? She gestured with a shrug.

------

Unknown to the newly waken survivors, the darkness shifted around them, a beast void of reasoning, its eyes filled with hunger and fury. The snake leaped onto its first prey, its immense weight smashing the man's bones before it drove the bladed end of its tail into a man. The survivors screamed, fleeing and scattering, some tripping over themselves in their hurry.

------

Her curious spirit evaporated instantly, being replaced with horror and distress as blood splattered against her. She turned to flee, only to trip against the uneven surface, the cold stone noses poking into her side. She did not want to die. Not here. Not like this. She scrambled away, feeling the beast's eyes landing on her as her hands dug in between the faces, her legs pushing as she attempted to flee. Her hand caught in a crack in the stone and she pulled with all her might.

The piece of stone cracked free as she pulled it into her grasp, her legs somehow managing to get under herself back up to face the beast. She turned to face the beast. She did not want to die here. The rock was sharp and deadly.

Olivia roared at the beast, desperate and defiant.

Qin Xue opened her eyes.

Feeling imminent danger, she did not make any hasty movements. It was dark and only a tiny lantern was lit up next to her. She contemplated a little if she should scurry away from the light into the darkness, or crawl slowly closer, like a moth to the superficial safety of the lamp. Being seen is danger, not being seen is also danger.
Before anything, she decided to look for any kind of attack or defense tool. Slowly, but steadily, her hands searched around until they gripped something like a sharp rock. Digging her fingernails into it, she carefully grabbed it, trying to make no noise while pulling steadily on it. The mission was harder than expected.
Her eyes formed to tiny slits, Xue moved her head a little, seeing other tiny lanterns on the floor, around and next to her.
They should not have noticed that I am awake, for now, no? was her first thought about the others.
Humans meant safety and danger in one.
Safety of the masses, danger of quarrells and deadly fights. Most of them were still not moving.
Qin Xue laid still, while she was observing, and her nails dug slowly and carefully around the soil of the sharp stone.
Some people stirred now, stood up, others looked around and some made gestures, or noises trying to communicate, but not her.
She would be one of the last to 'awaken', per own decision.

Suddenly, the darkness came alive and attacked.

No, it was not darkness, it was a monster. Shuddering, Xue finally grasped her hands around the stone and pulled it out in the commotion. She could barely grasp her lantern, and roll into a corner, before half awake people stomped her to death in a panic.
Luckily, the monster was feeding on another one of them, not her - that was her second thought. Again, safety and danger intermingled with each other.
The mass panic and the smell of blood left her a little moment of peace in her safe corner - no matter what, her instincts told her that moving prey was preferred to still one. But, soon it would finish the first snack - and she was not sure about that moving or non moving prey. Prey was prey - who would be next?
Suppressing the urge to vomit at the crunching noises of breaking bones and the wafting thick odor of fresh blood, she gripped her stone tighter, and crawled a little on all fours, to secure a good position to look for a way to escape.

The first thing she noticed was the darkness. Thick, almost like a living thing on its own. Eir slowly sat up, eyes wary as she looked around. She pulled the lantern she found closer, needing its light, needing to know what was around her. Shining it around, she found a sharp sort of rock partly buried in the ground and dug it out. She was alert, listening for the least little sound of danger. The others around her seemed to be in the same situation as she herself was. How had she gotten here? She tried to think, but shook her head when she was unable to remember anything of use.

Eir froze when she heard the first screams, the first splash of blood. What was that... thing? Another scream rent the air, shaking her from inaction. She began to gather the others who hadn't moved together, figuring there was some safety in numbers, knowing it was better than others running off alone in fear and being swallowed by whatever else lurked outside their area of light. If she could keep those who were less inclined to fight safer in any way, then at least she would have done some good. She could help defend them, feel some sense of worth in whatever life they had in now.

Darkness. All there was was darkness or more accurately nothingness and then light began to shine against his closed eyelids. Shirou's eyes shot open wide at the sudden change from nothing to the dull light coming from the lantern beside his body. Slowly sitting up and and taking stock of what was going on he began to notice all the people waking up. Instinct kicking in he began to feel around for something to use as a weapon should someone or something decide to go after him. As his hand fell on a particularly sharp rock fragment his grip tightened as he drew it close.

The sound of a monstrosity charging into the field of people quickly brought Shirou to his feet to consider his options. The world seemed to slow around him as he watched the creature devour its victim and he looked around to see what the others would do before acting himself. Most seemed to be running away though two took his interest, one seemed to be gathering those who did not seem to wish to fight presumably to protect and the other was a girl who screamed at the beast ready to fight it. Quickly coming to a decision Shirou moved to take up position next to and slightly behind the yelling girl ready to fight or should it come to it use the other as a detraction to attempt escape.

Hand meets quill. Quill meets ink. Ink meets tome.

A long time ago, in the place of stone faces, Humans sought self-preservation, selfishly sending others to serve as bait while they were all in fact meant to be the bait themselves.

------ Combat Phase Begin ------

Olivia bounded down the slope, taking large strides over the cold, grey foreheads which stared upwards into the darkness above. The stale air howled in her ears, freshly spilled blood flowed around the edges of the faces, some splashing as she missed her footing.

The snake was still. Like a statue as she approached it, watching her. It's head began to sway as she ducked around, wanting for it to throw its first move. Then it struck. Unknown to her, the snake had coiled itself up like a spring and when she was close enough, it unwound itself, the bladed end barely missing her. She felt it connect with the cloth she wore, leaving a dragging cut in the white fabric.

She lunged, intending to stab it where it's body enlarged in a grotesque imitation of a Human's torso. The attack bounced off the bladed end of the tail, sparks nearly blinding her as she was flung back, crashing against the ground, her head ringing from the impact. Her hair now soaked in blood, she struggled to her feet, her vision swimming.

---Pre-Combat---

Dust slowly opened his eyes, his vision blurry and head pounding. He had no idea where he was, or what anything was. He slowly sat up and looked around to see other people waking up. He found a strange looking lantern by him that he picked up. Everything around them was shrouded in near complete darkness. The darkness felt alive, breathing, moving, watching every move. It felt sinister, the hair on Dust’s neck rising. He stood up looking around, searching for anything that could possibly clue them in on what was happening.

Suddenly a strange creature leaped from the darkness and began attacking people near it. Watching several people die gruesome deaths, panic began to rise. What was happening? What should Dust do? His legs wanted to run, but some instinct told him that turning his back to this creature would only lead to his death. He crouched down and stepped back a bit, searching for any type of weapon to use. His hand eventually came upon a piece of broken rock that was extremely sharp, leaving a shallow cut in his hand from rubbing against it.

---Combat Phase---

Dust saw a woman, her face coated in blood from what he assumed was one of the others killed by the creature, run to face the beast. She attempted to get closer to it but it lashed out with its sharp tail cutting the cloth covering her body. He couldn’t tell if the cut had hit skin but he didn't see any blood. She lunged striking out at it but the beast was ready and deflected the attack, sending her onto the ground.

Dust knew he had to do something or she would die.The only problem is what could he do? If he charged in recklessly it would get them both killed. He decided to try and sneak up on the beast, slowly moving towards it while its attention was focused on the girl. He was able to get close to it before leaping with the sharp rock. The beast had turned in a flash, its eyes beaming into his as time seemed to stand still. He felt a heavy weight slamming into his chest, his eyes following it back to see it connected to the creature.

The hit was followed by a loud, sickening crunch sound as several ribs were broken from the impact. Dust stabbed the rock into the creature’s body that it had slammed into him with all of his force, managing to sink it about in inch into its skin before being thrown from the force of the blow. The small hills in the ground intensified his pain as he slammed into the ground and rolled to the side. The pain was so great he didn't know if he would be able to move or not. His vision was blurry and fading in and out as he managed to look at the beast. He had to do something, but there was nothing he could do in this state. The rock he stabbed into its body was still embedded but alone it couldn’t be enough to hurt it greatly.

Calming down her stomach a little, Qin Xue saw that it was not really wise to flee - and even if she did, who knows how many more of those would be lurking in the darkness?
Thinking for a while, she saw shapes of people in the darkness - who were either brave or foolish - facing the creature. A good moment to flee, honestly, but instinctively, she thought it would be wiser to group up with those, who were not easily scared away by a monster.
Survival was impossible if they ran like chickens.

But Xue was not one to throw away her little life easily as well. First, she sneaked closely and silently to the fighting place, watching the girl and then the male go down in succession. She frowned. There would be nobody to group up with, if they died that easily...
She felt no pity for either of them, crawling around to the back of the monster. After seeing both of them on the ground the monster stilled for a moment, seemingly undecided what prey to eat first.
The moment of pause gave Qin Xue the perfect chance to leap up behind it and aim for its head with her improvised weapon. She missed a little, and the stone landed on its neck. Still, due to her full body weight behind the tightly gripped stone, she managed to drive it halfway into the monster. The impact cut her own hands, but it was obvious that it suffered more as it let out a violent screech.

A gust of cold wind moved in Qin Xues back, and she ducked, narrowly escaping being slashed apart by the sharp tail. She had to leave her weapon behind, as she rolled away on the uneven ground, towards her lantern, as if it could help her fight the grotesque creature.

Of course it wont conveniently die for me if i wish so. was her bitter thought, and she cursed herself for her foolishness, as it turned around. Madness could be seen in its glowing eyes, as it savagely jumped towards her.

Shirou watched as the girl he moved to back up was quickly dispatched and a tall man moved and was knocked away as well after causing a minor injury to the beast. He began to back up seeing no chance of this going well until he noticed the girl moving behind the beast. A small smile graced his lips as the girl slashed its throat causing another injury to the beast and distracting it toward her direction. Not to loose this one time chance Shirou ran towards the beast ramming his full weight and his makeshift weapon into the side of the beast. Under normal circumstances the charge would have done little but the beasts jump toward the girl left it with little balance on the ground causing the beast to roll to the ground stone in bedded in its side. He had hoped to try and move with the collision and roll away from the beast but was quickly struck with part of the beasts tail as they fell to the ground sending Shirou rolling in the opposite direction with a sicking crunch.

------ Monster Turn ------

The Viper gathered itself, growing calculative, its sense of bloodlust abating enough for its cunning to show. It remailed coiled, completely still save for its forked tongue. Flashes of white as it detected movement in the darkness. It picked the first target it could see, the supine form of one of those which had attacked it earlier. It sped towards Shirou, its tail coiling behind it once again like a spring, its muscles tensing as it surged off the stone faces to leap up. Its shadow covering him, aiming to crush him with the full weight of its body.

Shirou

Shirou struggled to recover from his injuries, pains in his legs and chest making his movements slow and struggled. Just as he began to stand fully the sight of the beast coiling and launching at him brought a shot of adrenaline through his veins. With the short burst of new found strength Shirou moved to jump out barely missing being crushed to death and as the beast crashed into the ground where he just stood. The force caused by the beasts crashing into the ground next to him flung Shirou away from the beast again landing on his legs. A sicking crack and sharp pain shot through Shirou as he landed as a scream of pain left his mouth and he rolled to a stop. Struggling to breath, let alone stand, he attempted to stand once again collapsing shortly after ever attempt began.

Ulric

Ulric awoke toward the edge of the light to the sounds of chaos and combat. Rubbing his eyes and attempting to gain some semblance of stability as he stood up. Standing up and looking around he caught sight of a young girl slashing at the beast and a boy slamming into its side as it went to strike the girl. Ulric bent down snapping a loose stone out of the ground preparing to fight when he saw the boy moving to stand despite his injuries only to be struck down again. The boy landed a little ways away from Ulric and he had assumed the boy dead after the strike only to see him attempting to stand despite everything. He made his way over to the boy, crouching next to and tapping him on the shoulder to tell the boy to stop and rest before standing and moving to fight the beast.

After watching the younger boy go down fighting the beast, Dust knew he had to keep fighting if he wanted to keep the rest of the people alive. He felt completely drained and he couldn’t move without an intense jolt of pain racking his body. His stone was still in the beast’s skin. He would need another weapon to fight. He didn't have the strength to break another stone from the ground.

The beast now had several stones sticking out of it, the gathered people’s desperate attempt to survive. However, the beast also wanted to survive. This was several beings fighting to stay alive on both sides. With the things they currently had they were not much of a match for this beast, which had many ways of fighting. Most of the remaining survivors were injured badly, Dust included.

He obviously had several broken bones in his chest, making breathing hard and excruciating. He couldn't let that stop him though. There were still others fighting who needed help, lest they all fall. Dust struggled through the pain to get up to his knees. He looked at the snake looking for any way to fight it. His own stone wasn’t very deep and could be pulled out fairly easily. This is the action he settled on.

Dust pushed himself to crawl towards the snake, its attention focused elsewhere. Once close enough he leaped and grabbed hold of the stone ripping it out. The force left a rather deep cut in his left hand but he ignored the pain and dripping blood as the removal of the stone got the beast’s attention, its head whipping in an instant to stare at him.

Dust jumped at the moment he saw the head turning and managed to grab onto the top of the snake, near its head. Holding on with his left arm he jammed the stone as hard and deep as he could into the beast’s eye. There was a sickening feel as the stone forced itself into the beast’s much softer eye. Blood gushed out and the beast began tossing furiously, slamming itself into the ground and crushing the upper part of Dust’s left arm between its body and the ground.

Dust let out a powerful yell before being flung off the snake. He crashed into the ground with painful force, blood flying from his mouth. He laid there, blood flowing from the cuts in his hand, unable to move his left arm at all. His entire body was in pain. The beast was still thrashing about in pain though. Maybe they can live now was Dust’s last thought before slipping into unconsciousness.

Olivia pushed herself jerkily to her feet, watching as several others seemed to bounce off harmlessly against the beast, only one who seemed to be able to cause damage. Significant damage. It was almost as though he was made stronger than the rest, or aided by some unseen force. Her hopes were promptly crushed as he was slammed to the ground as the beast thrashed about, a stone gored into one of its eyes.

Her body felt like a sack of stones, her sense of equilibrium had yet to settle from the beast's defence. From what she could see, the beast was tired, perhaps even on the verge of starving to death when the battle began. Perhaps they stood a chance. It's body, while mostly covered in thick scales, meant much less when its responses were sluggish. Perhaps they were lucky for this to be their first adversary.

She had kept the rock gripped firmly in her hand, moving forward, charging mindlessly at the beast, entering its blindspot. She tripped, loosing her footing and landed on the viper's tail. It hissed, pulling against her weight. She stabbed repeatedly. Blood spurting from its fresh wounds.

Then she was on her back, her breath whooshing out of her as stone noses poked into her back. She felt a crushing weight on her chest, the mass of the tail slamming against her with a resounding crack. She coughed, blood spurting from her lips, the skin of her chest growing jagged as the ribs underneath broke from the blow.

------ Monster Turn ------

The snake hissed, sweeping its tail, sending the woman tumbling down from the mound of stone it was coiled on. It's tail was bleeding profusely, sapping further at its strength.

It hissed, its blurred sense of sight enhanced by the newfound scent of blood. It followed its weakened prey down, using its bladed tail to pin its prey to the ground. The attack barely missed, pain rippling through its entire system as the shockwave of the blow was absorbed by the bloodied nerve endings.

Ulric watched as another man was struck down after hurting the beast further being followed by another girl scoring a number of hits on the beast. During this time he made a move of his own moving toward the beast avoiding its attention as best he could. When the beast struck back at the girl and left itself in what appeared to be great pain for a moment Ulric made his move. Charging toward the pained beast Ulric bashed into it side knocking it to the ground. Not one to loose his moment of advantage he grabbed onto the beast as it fell stabbing it in its side attempting to open as larger wound on the beast. The beast recovered quickly beginning to thrash in an attempt to throw Ulric off bashing him against the ground a few times in the process. As the beast finally began to recover Ulric let go with one particularly hard thrash sending him rolling away from the beast furthering his injuries. He stood and gave himself a moment to recover as the beast began to regain its footing its movements pained by the many injuries sustained from the combined efforts of the group.

It was tired. Very tired. It could hardly feel its body as death seeped into its bones, blood flooding its internal systems. Each breath was deliberate, an effort, its pupils dilated and its vision blurred, the light filling its vision. The Adder collapsed in a heap, blood rolling down between the unliving faces.

Olivia took shallow breaths, guessing this was probably it for her. A slow, painful death. She coughed, pain rippling through her body, a calm settling over her as she closed her eyes, waiting for the inevitable. She could no longer feel the ground beneath her, only the excruciating pain in her chest.

Acacia moved over to the fallen beast, watching it warily as its body twitched, her lamp held high to shed light on the full length of the creature. With a stone shard in her other hand, she prodded the beast with her foot, then kicked it, more blood coming from its open wounds.

Ulric let out a sigh of relief at the sight of the beast collapsing dead and began to check himself over to take stock of his injuries. Other than some large bruises and small cuts he seemed to be in one piece thanks to the beasts weakened strength at the time. After finishing his quick inspection of his own injuries Ulric began to look around to see who all survived and who may need assistance. Noticing The young girl who seemed to need help more than any of the others he saw Ulric moved toward her his movements slightly pained. Only taking a moments rest first before he picked up the girl as carefully as possible and began carrying her over to the largest group he could see figuring at least on of them would be medically capable. leaving the girl with the group Ulric continued carrying the others who fought the beast that lost consciousness over to get them help finishing going back the young boy who still seemed to be struggling to get up despite his injuries. A small laugh escaped him despite himself at the site earning him a glare from the injured boy. Ulric moved picking up the boy, putting him over his shoulder, despite the boys growled protests and began carrying him over to the rest.

Acacia recoiled as the man placed the broken body before the small group of survivors. Blood rolled into the cracks, some moving to avoid the crimson liquid that flowed under their feet. She looked up, and in the distance, she could see a faint glow in the endless darkness. She pointed and shouted to alert the others. She turned back and beckoned for others to follow her towards the source of the light. Some followed, others stood, hesitant as she made her way to the light, distant in the horizon shrouded in darkness. She turned back, watching the trail of lantern lights as the survivors made to reach the source of light.

After plodding on for what seemed like eternity, the light loomed in the distance. Instinctively, the warm light made her feel safe, protected. The ground was smooth, the white stone faces seemingly worn or shattered eons ago. She stood guard, watching as more survivors entered the light.

The source of light was a giant pile of lanterns, towering at least three times her height, the light causing her to squint each time she looked at it.

Stumbling, Qin Xue could only grab her lamp, before she had tried to evade the beasts attack - then her body suddenly lost all footing as she experienced a short moment of weightlessness.

Then, darkness engulfed her, as she fell down into a small crevice and everything turned dark around her, as she painfully hit the ground.

The oil lamp weakly enlightened the crevice that Xue fell into, while a small puddle of blood began slowly dripping on the ground.

***
Not knowing how much time passed, Qin Xue woke up by a piercing pain in her side. Sharply she sucked air in, as she failed to stand up. Her hands had protected her head, but she was badly slashed up and her side still bleeding. Turning on her wound-free side, she looked upwards.
The crevice was only around two- something meters high, but lying on the floor, it seemed like an insurmountable height for Xue.
Gritting her teeth, the girl weakly crawled on her knees, and inspected her surroundings.
She saw nothing that could help her.
Luckily her lamp did not crash into the ground but was stuck in a slim part of the crevice.
Sharply inhaling, she turned her eyes to the stone that pierced a side of her back, below the ribcage. She seemed to have instinctively turned and that saved her inner organs, barely. Xue did not dare to pull it out, she would simply bleed to death and this would be her grave. - There were already bones lying around, indicating, that she would not be the first to die down here.
She saw no way of climbing out - at least not while she was weak and bleeding. And even if she climbed out - who could tell her if she would directly climb into the snakes mouth?

sighing, she leaned against the cool stone, and pressed both hands on her wound, to stop the bleeding. Her eyes screened the floor, but besides some very sparse vegetation, lots of rock and the dried skeletons of animals and humans here and there she did not find anything helpful.
If she could at least get to her lamp... she might be able to cauterize her wound with the fire.
Her dark eyes did not show too much emotion, as she stared upwards...

Actually, at one point during the month, a group of a dozen or so Cultivators belonging to a different local power group showed up. They desired to slay Meng Hao and take his medicinal pills by force. A single cold snort echoed out from within the Immortal’s cave, causing Heaven and Earth to shake, and instantly killing half of the group.(from ISSTH)

Soon the Survivors arrived the the circle of light. Acacia glanced around, some will still streaming in, one by one and by the looks of it their journey was uneventful. Somehow this light must have had scared whatever other beasts she was certain was watching them as they passed through the hills dotted with lifeless stone faces which seemed to be tracking their every move. She gestures and shouts, noting a response as she worked certain syllables to issue the same instructions.

She had those who picked at the body of the snake lay out the resources before them in the light. Ripped with their bare hands, the Survivors took whatever they could find which seemed valuable or useful. A rib bone, two scraps of the snake's skin, what appeared to be a still-quavering organ and a piece of the creature's skull. There too, someone laid the fallen female survivor to the side, her body broken and bloodied. She surveyed these things before standing upright again. They needed to communicate, in much more than just grunts and shouts. It was a language they needed to develop first to form the bedrock of their community. This of course will take a while, but as she thought of it, the more valuable it seemed. She begins to speak to those around her, including those whom she was instructing previously for an amount of time.

Of course, they too would have grown distracted, but as they formed a verbal code of communication over the coming hours, simple combinations vocal syllables which were essential for survival and working as a community solidified into new words for their language. This would continue to form in their community over the coming years, but for now, this would do for their tiny colony.

She got to her feet after the hours of sitting and working out simple words, the words coming with some difficulty, "What should we name this place, our new home?"

After Xue stabilized her bloodflow, she slowly pulled herself up on the cold stones, reaching for the lamp above her.
It was not enough. She bit her teeth together and , enduring the pain, climbed a little while reaching out for the lamp again.
Finally her fingers grabbed the lamp, and she fell down on the floor, bringing the lamp down with her.
This time her lamp landed on the floor and cracked open, setting some dry vegetation aflame. Some of the flametongues licked in her face and her eyebrows were burned away.
Xue clasped her hands before her eyes so they wouldnt get burned and extinguished the flames in her face.
Biting her teeth tightly together, she pulled out the sharp stone shard from her side, then quickly cauterized the wound with the leaking flames from the shattered lamp.
She did not scream, never did while she fell as well, though she sucked the air in sharply as the smell of burned and charred flesh entered her nose. Qin Xue endured the excruciating pain, as sweatdrops ran down her back - this time she did not faint.

The flames rose from the cracks and singe the exposed wounds, leaving the skin flawless, save for a black mark.

The sparse vegetation smoldered for a while before the cold stone extinguished the flame on the cold floor.

The lantern was still burning, miraculously. Though the flames flickered and were a lot weaker than earlier, after leaking some of the precious material.

Snapping a branch from a dead dry tree, Xue dipped it into the open flame and stuck it as high up as possible into the crevice to light up the cavern she fell into. there seemed to be no exit, no? the crevice just turned more and more narrow, as she looked into the direction of the darkness.
Then she looked upwards. The distance did not seem that much anymore, however, she was still too weak to even try to climb.
And if she called out? No. It might lure more monsters.
Xue decided to gather strenghth while thinking what to do next.
