"Good evening, Midnight City! How we all doing tonight?"

9:30 p.m., New York. The day was ending for a lot of folks, and the roads were alive with activity. Concrete highways rose in levels above the ground, coiled around buildings that made skyscrapers look like shacks. The sky was clear, as much as it got in a big city, not a cloud in it. The lower levels bustled with the same intensity as the roads. Crowds moved in busy masses, and cars traveled in packs directed by the traffic lights. Above them, billboards shone with bright neon-shaded holograms, washing the city in a brilliant contrast of shades. Pink and blue stood out amongst the dark backdrop of asphalt and cement.

Parked outside a small diner on the ground level, a black car rested still. The windows were shut, and only a slight muffled sound could be heard outside of it. Within the vehicle, the radio played, the dim lights of the controls and the dashboard the only illumination besides the lights of the building entering through the driver side window. The radio's screen showed the station's name, Midnight FM. The announcer was among the more distinctive of broadcasters. A vocal augmentation gave him a distinct mechanical twang to his voice, much like that of a vocoder.

"It's been a long, long day for all of us, I know. Workin' hard or hardly workin', life throws its punches and never holds back. Now a lot of us are going back home, back to those important things, ready to kick back and relax. But to those of us whose days are just started, this one goes out to you."

The announcer's voice went silent, and a song began to play. During the slow buildup of the introduction, a tone came from the dashboard, and a feminine, but clearly artificial voice spoke.

"Incoming call from: Anne. Do you wish to answer?" The voice asked. An AI built into the car's systems that aided with navigation and communications was quite standard these days. With one that was good enough, a person could essentially mark a destination and relax while their car drove itself.

Jack, the driver, slightly adjusted his seating and leaned forward. "Yeah, put her on." As the call was taken, a projection was displayed on the interior of the windshield. A picture of the caller, as well as other relevant information such as connection quality and locations. "Heyo," He answered, making a slight wave towards the portrait.

"Hey, Jack. Work news." Anne was seated in an office at the police station, calling through her watch. The earpiece functioned as both incoming and outgoing speakers, while the screen displayed information similar to that on Jack's windshield.

"Which CEO's kid did we arrest this time?" Jack sardonically asked, tugging a box of cigarettes out of his shirt's chest pocket. He plucked one out of the pack and placed it between his teeth. He then raised his right hand, the top of his thumb's metallic casing shifting apart. From the tip, a lighter apparatus shifted forward and out. He made a motion similar to snapping his fingers, and with the small flame that now sat on the tip of his finger, he lit the cigarette's end and shook out the fire, encasing the lighter in its resting position again.

Anne smiled a bit at that. "Nope, not that this time. You know those shootings that have been going on? Turns out another one went down, and we've got footage this time." A string of mass murders had taken place across the city, normally targeted at criminal gatherings. Vigilante work, if she had to guess. Helpful, but not something they could allow to continue. "Chief wants you to see it. They're putting some more officers on the case, us included."

"Finally something we can go off of. Alright, be there soon. Any news on who those officers are?" Jack turned the key by the steering wheel, starting the car properly. Before pulling out of his parking space, he took a moment to secure his seatbelt. The call information shifted out of the way as the vehicle began moving, sticking to the bottom and sides of the windshield projection instead of the whole thing.

"Nothing they couldn't tell you better. But hey, they're apparently pretty good. You should be able to get along with them just fine," Anne responded. "See you soon."

The call ended, and Jack's car turned onto a highway ramp. The information projected onto the windshield vanished, and the bright lights lining the road illuminated the signs above it. It would be a bit of a drive, but he had absolutely no complaints about that.

Elsewhere, a test of some homemade gear was about to take place. Atop an older apartment building, only about four floors tall, a young woman adjusted a series of straps holding something onto her. A backpack-styled piece of equipment with four cylindrical extensions took some preparation and positioning to get on. Once it was in place, she pressed something on the belt strap, and four plugs in the pack screwed themselves into augmentations lining her torso.

A light on the back of her neck augmentation glowed, confirming the connection was successful. The cylinders segmented, and extended to a length of about five feet each. They began to move around, as if each was constructed with hundreds of joints, in a smoothly flowing motion around her. "Okay, looking good. Let's get going." She spoke to apparently nobody, and after tightening the strap of the bag that was currently hanging off her hip, she broke into a run towards the edge of the building.

Taking a jump right off, the mechanical limb on her upper right shoulder shot forward, the segments stretching further to increase its length to ten feet, just enough to grab the edge of the next building. The other three changed position as well, moving forward to catch the impact against the wall rather than let her smash into it. The first limb began to retract, and the others moved her up the surface with a walking motion until she reached the edge. She directed them to lift her directly onto the roof, at which point she glanced back over her shoulder.

A silent message was sent through her nanomachine communicator, directed towards the only person she was synched up to. "Come on, Juzo. I thought parkour was your thing?" She was very much only giving some good-natured banter, but being in the lead was always fun. "Don't drop your bag, that stuff was expensive to put together. C'moooon." She turned forward again, and made her way towards the next building, propelling herself forward with the two lower limbs extending from her back. They extended to full length to catch her fall on the shorter building's length, and after impact, they slowly began to retract until her feet touched the floor.

She moved them out of the way, curling the limbs behind her back to give her space to remove and set down her bag. Placing it on the floor, she squatted next to it and opened the zipper, taking out a variety of objects. A few small drones, some disk-shaped objects, and a dark green full-faced helmet. A few brushes of her hair aside on the back exposed a plug augmentation, which she lined up with a USB-like device on the interior of the helmet as she put it on.

The visor lit up for a moment as an HUD was projected onto the interior. The drones that had been set on the ground activated, and began to float around her as they moved into positions that she directed them into. It was just about time to get the testing started, and since she evidently had all the time in the world before her partner finally caught up, there were plenty of preparations she could make.

A black motorcycle rested with it's motor quietly running in the alley way behind a small family owned diner. The bike's gauges glowed softly bathing the helmet of it's rider in a pale green light. The helmet's visor was backlit with a matching pale green light, information streamed across while the rider's eyes followed. 9:30pm, partially cloudy, 55 degrees, weather, news, and the date streamed across a small bar across the bottom of the visor's hud.

"Good evening, Midnight City!" The radio in the helmet kicked on, before switching to a soft female voice. Black market AI sounded much more human than standard or even government issue, but it was still clearly robotic.

"Connecting", the voice spoke 3 times, informing the rider of an incoming call.

"Good morning, Tess". A gravely female voice cut through, it's owner having smoked for years. "I trust you slept well, because you won't be sleeping for at least 12 more hours". She let out a soft chuckle before continuing on. "Your job now is to collect our newest employee from her agent". The faint sound of a lighter clicking echoed over the call. "Piece of shit-", followed by a sharp exhale. "She's about 19, she'll be wearing a jump suit matching yours, and a bright yellow full faced helmet. Any questions"?

"Threat level and fire power"? Tesla shifted slightly in his seat, his arm reaching to his pistol to check if it was still there.

"Minimal threat, and if all goes well you won't need any. She'll be waiting for you at 4 am 10 miles north of your current location. Time to get to work courier, bring the package home safely and you'll be getting a nice bonus". Tesla kicked up one foot onto the foot rest of his motorcycle, his hand returning to the throttle.

The motorcycle roared to life as he twisted the throttle. The bike screamed out of the alley way cutting into traffic 3 feet in front of a small sedan. The lights danced off the the bike as it tore down the street towards its destination.

The cracking of joints could be heard as Juzo limbered himself up. He pulled on one of his arms, flexing his hands, eying the black caps on all of his fingers. He didn’t seem particularly enthusiastic about his companion moving ahead of him, but he also didn’t seem too intent on catching up to her. He continued his stretches, arms bending down to almost reach the blades of his prosthetics. He rose up with a huff, picked up his bag, and then decided it was time to make a move.

The prosthetic blades crunched against the gravel on top of the roof, and with a quick run to gain momentum, Juzo shot off the building, using the metal structural beams beneath the concrete to give him a considerable boost into the air. As he did so, he silently sent a message to Heather that consisted of nothing but a string of farting noises, as to better portray how he thought about her taunting him. Parkour was totally his thing. How dare she even go there.

Juzo landed hard on his prosthetics on the roof of the other building. They seemed to absorb the impact, because he didn’t even flinch as he unbent his knees from his landing position and ascended to full height. He made his way over to Heather, and then gave her a confused look. “Bag? What bag?” he joked, his tongue sticking halfway out as he did so. However, the joke would probably fall flat considering he was holding the bag with both hands.

He squatted alongside Heather and began to unzip it, and revealed pretty much the same items she had, disregarding the helmet. He had a few more drones on him, as well as the discs. He put one next to his face and feigned eating it, and then put it down, entirely unsure what to do with it. “This was expensive? It’s a disc,” he said, half teasingly, half confusedly.

In the police station, a meeting room was occupied by a series of crimes. Photographs of bloody bodies strewn across concrete floors, autopsy reports all with the same ending, and statements from police officers were arranged on a rectangular table, surrounded by unoccupied chairs and agitated police officers. On the far wall of the room, video feed was displayed on a television hung on the wall. It was paused in the middle of a spray of gunfire, making the violent moment strangely still. Evidence arranged in a neat set.

"We're waiting on a few more officers to arrive before we begin," said one of the officers in charge of the investigation. He was standing cross armed in front of the other police officers in the room, impatience apparent in the set of his jaw. "I trust you're all familiar with the events of the case?"

There were a few murmurs of assent from the group. In the back, which felt cruel as she could barely see what was going on in front, Velma flipped through the file she had been hastily handed. A string of violent shootings against groups of criminals, one had finally been caught on tape. She gnawed at her lip as she read over the summary again.

Lance craned his head to look down at her, and frowned slightly as he saw she was flipping through it again. She frowned back up at him, unsure of how to communicate her thoughts without speaking, which she was sure she would get.

She'd been on edge since they'd abruptly been assigned this case, and they had been attempting to learn the important aspects quickly before the rest of their team got there. It had been the biggest case they had been put on since transferring to the CCIB, and while Velma was glad to not being desk work, she was also slightly terrified. Mostly they had been kept on the sidelines, and away from criminals who would shoot them with arm cannons or whatever. Velma still felt entirely too normal for this department. "Who are we waiting on?" She asked in a whisper.

Lance said, "Jack Kavinsky," with similar softness. "Anne just contacted him, he should be here soon." Everyone around them was on edge, but Lance seemed as relaxed as always. There was a tightness in his brow, though, that indicated he wasn't entirely calm. He rubbed the back of his neck and looked up.

"While we're waiting, we're putting you into teams of four to begin searching for our suspect. Rogers, House, Zhou, you're with me. Loyola, take Wakowski, McClane, and Rivera." He rattled off a few more names that meant nothing to Velma, then paused. "Vance... You're with Kavinsky, Walker, and Holt." There was a tone of apology in his voice that irritated Velma. She and Lance both turned to look at Anne. She seemed fairly nonthreatening, and there were no visible augmentations, but of course that didn't mean anything. She tried to conjure up an image in her mind of Jack, but failed. She hardly knew anyone in the department. She just hoped he wasn't one of the people who immediately hated her and Lance based on the PR scramble that had caused their transfer.

Of course, knowing her luck, he was.

"Good evening, Midnight City! How we all doin tonight?"

The radio blared in the background as Tonia picked her way through a piece of security code for a small job she'd been given. She lay on her stomach on the floor, legs crossed in the air behind her. "There it is," she murmured, tabbing through the code. "Got you, you sneaky little-"

"Miss Tonia?" She lifted her head in response to the mechanical voice behind her. Wally stood in the door to her bedroom, giving her his usual unblinking stare. "It's Alexander's bedtime."

"Alexander, go to bed!" She shouted over the radio's throb. There was a groan of dissent from somewhere in the house. "You heard me, buster." She clicked a few keys and then slapped her laptop shut. Climbing to her feet, she turned the radio off and followed the complaining until she got to the living.

Alexander was sitting on the floor, head resting on the coffee table, watching the news. It occurred Tonia that her little brother was more aware about current events than she was. "What's this?" She asked. There was a stern looking news reporter shouting bullet points.

"There was another shooting in that case that's going on right now," he said, not moving his head. "Can I stay up a few more minutes?"

"Have they played this same story repeatedly the last few minutes?" She asked. He grumbled, and she gave him a light thump on the head. "Go to bed. And stop watching all these violent crime stories." That was probably the maternal thing to say.

He stood up sulkily. "It's just the news." He slinked off. "Night," he said.

"Night, she answered distractedly, watching as the crime story was explained. A string of shootings, all targeted at crime families and syndicates. Tonia tilted her head, then sighed. She shouldn't be watching this, she had work to do.

Rolling down the highway, Jack's car projected something else onto the windshield, a small holographic arrow in the corner that pointed in the direction he needed to go for the quickest route to the station. The deep shade of purple light it gave off illuminated the cab to some degree, and with a few turns onto new lanes and a turn off an exit, he had crossed quite the distance pretty quickly. Aside from the occasional red light, there were no obstacles that required immediate attention, just smooth sailing down the brightly-coloured roads. The nearer he got to the station, the less the guidance system actively moved his route. GPS improvements were quite an advantage of 23rd century life.

Pulling into the station's garage, the car's AI chimed in a final time. "Arrived at destination. Goodnight, Jack." All informational projections vanished, and the engine went quiet as Jack turned off the ignition. After removing the key from the car, he pinched the end of his cigarette with his robotic fingers, snuffing it out about three-fourths of the way through its length. What was left ended up stuck back into the box for later, then stuffed into his pocket.

On his way into the station proper, Jack slid his coat off. He doubted he'd need the extra protection inside. A few greetings were exchanged with other officers, mostly just small nods of acknowledgement, and the front desk attendant was the one who got most of his attention. A much younger officer, who was a rookie of about two months, currently shuffling in his chair to a song playing over a pair of large over-ear headphones. A hologram projection from the headset covered his eyes, acting as a screen for an accompanying video. Jack stood in front of the desk, coat slung over his shoulder, and rested his hand on his hip while watching the attendant dance the night away.

After some moments, he cleared his throat, but still got no response. He tried waving, once again to no avail. Finally, he leaned forward and lightly pounded the desk's top, which shook up a bunch of smaller objects and got the attendant's attention. A surprised jump, followed by a slap of the headset off his face and a frantic flailing motion to catch it, drew quite a bit of amusement out of Jack.

"Oh, officer Kavinsky!" The attendant sighed in relief that he hadn't been caught by one of the harsher officers of the station. Not throwing away the blessing, he turned off the headset and stuffed it into a drawer behind the desk. "The chief called you in, there's a meeting about that case you guys were working on a while back."

"That's what I'm here for, Bucky." Jack stood up straight again, placing his coat on the tabletop. "Which office is it in?"

"Oh, the big one. You know, the one with that big wall screen? They've got the footage set up for it and everything." He pointed over his shoulder to the door on the right. "Just go through there, and it's the-"

Jack raised a hand, and with a half-smile, nodded. "I've been here for a few years, I get what you mean. Thanks." He started to head for the door, but stopped and took a step back towards the desk. "By the way, you might wanna be careful with those headphones. Never know when the chief's gonna show up."

With a nod, the attendant straightened up in his seat. "Oh, of course! I'm done with 'em for the night, anyway. Good luck with the case!"

"Thanks. Hey, do me a favor?" Jack nudged his coat forward. "Watch this for me. I'll see ya later." He stepped back, and as the younger cop nodded and took the coat, Jack made a 'finger guns' point with his mechanical hand and winked before walking through the door. After he was gone, the other officer decided to try the coat on for himself.

The door to the meeting room opened, and Jack walked in. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, showing off the lowermost part of his robotic arm entirely. There was no hiding an aug like that, and after a quick scan of the room, he made his way over to Anne's side. "Hey, what'd I miss?" He inquired, voice a hushed tone.

"Only everything important," Anne responded. "Squads were set up. You're with me and those two." She motioned with her head towards Lance and Velma. Anne wasn't one of the people that held anything against how they got into the bureau, but she did have some concerns regarding their safety. Neither were visibly augmented, but then again, Anne herself was quite well-equipped with only small amounts of machinery visible. Maybe they had some sort of ace up their sleeve, but the emphasis put onto Velma's induction into the bureau, as well as the focus on how she wasn't augmented that news reports gave, made her doubt that very much. She brushed the thoughts aside, and instead verbally jabbed at Jack. "Took you long enough, by the way."

"It's my day off," Jack quipped. He looked over at his new partners, scanning them both figuratively and literally. The pupils of his eyes rotated as his sight zoomed in on them, and a quick check of their files from the database showed him what was publicly available to CCIB officers. "Hm, not bad. Could be worse." He paused, and made a good-natured joke at the desk attendant's expense. "Could be Bucky."

"But he's not even-..." Anne almost objected to the possibility due to a lack of augmentations, but recalled their current situation rather quickly. "Mmm. We'll have to manage."

"Sure will." Jack allowed his eyes to return to a neutral state, and focused attention back on the head officer in the room. "Okay, so that footage. Where's it from, what's it show us, and when are we watching it?"

-----

Heather watched Juzo as he approached, and since her eyes were covered by her helmet's visor, she made an exaggerated motion with her head that suggested playful exasperation. "It's a fancy disk," she countered, taking hold of one in each hand as she stood up. While doing so, she held her hands out to the side, and decided a bit of drama was necessary for the beginning of their excursion. The drones all lit up, encasing themselves in bubble-like shields, while both of the disks she held lit up as well.

"These, I made special. They should work well with your magnetic augs, and can bounce around pretty good without breaking." While she had no electromagnetism augs herself, she knew just the way to demonstrate the combat potential. She turned and chucked one at one of the drones, and it began to bounce around the shielded machines in the air, flying in an extremely straight path between each one before moving onto the next. "So we're gonna see if you can't get good with these, yeah? Catch!"

With a hefty toss, she flung the other disk to Juzo. Luckily, they were designed to be non-lethal. If he missed his catch, the worst he'd get was the wind knocked out of him or a bit of a zap. "And after you get the hang of these things, we're gonna get some more direct practice. A real live-fire exercise." One of Heather's hands came to a rest on her hip, while the other one gave Juzo a thumbs up. "You, me, and a bunch of stuff to throw at each other. Sounds fun, huh?"

She mentally guided one of her drones around in such a way that the disk bouncing between them was sent flying towards her instead, and one of her tentacles snatched it out of the air on its approach. It then transferred to her actual hand, and she passed it to Juzo with a weak underhanded toss instead of a direct throw. She saw no need to be so rough on him in such a short time.

(Collab between me and Eggsy.)

As the door to the meeting room opened, Velma and Lance's attention immediately went to the man entering. While there were various features that made him remarkable, they were all lost behind the large mechanical arm. After a moment, Velma attached a name to the man- Jack Kavinsky. He strode over to Anne's side, and they had a murmured conversation that Velma forced herself not to guess the subject of.

Lance nudged her with a sharp elbow. "Head on over to meet the team?" He murmured. Velma grimaced slightly, but nodded. She headed over to the pair, Lance following behind. She almost began to introduce herself, but stopped when the chief spoke.

"If we're all here, we'll watch the recording we found," he said, gesturing to the screen. This got the attention of the police officers- no one had seen it except the chief, and there had been much speculation on the content. They collectively turned towards the screen. He pointed the remote clasped in his hand at the screen and rewinded the video to the beginning, a few choppy frames appearing as he skipped back. He fought with the device a few moments longer, then finally hit play.

The screen went black for a moment as the captured video was reversed to its salvaged state. It showed a long hallway, arched into a 90 degree turn into another one. Doors lined the hall, and pressed against the corner, a suited man stood holding a gun. Blood covered his front side, and a stream leaking from his knee suggested injury. He breathed heavily, his hands holding a tight but shaky grip on the handle and stock of his rifle. The lighting of the hall was drenched in a deep red, flickering every few moments. Normal lights remained off, suggesting it was emergency backup lighting or some sort of alarm system gone quiet.

At the end of the hall, a figure came into view. From the angle of the camera, only a pair of legs and a rifle were visible. The figure strolled very casually towards the first door, and kicked it open with force enough to break it off its hinges. For a few moments, he disappeared into the room, and gunshots rang out. At each one, the hiding man flinched, trying to steady his feet. The shooter emerged from the room after a short time, and proceeded to the next room, opposite the first door and slightly further forward. More of their body came into view: a tall male, dressed head to toe in what looked like black leather. His face was obscured by a motorcycle helmet, the only identifying sign a glaring red light shining from behind the visor.

His methods were repeated with the final two doors. The first went much the same way as the other, a forced open followed by a hail of unseen gunfire. When he emerged, he carried another weapon, a double-barreled shotgun held over his shoulder. While approaching the final door, a blade sprung from it, scraping against the side of his helmet. A step was taken back, and after he pointed the shotgun at the part of the door nearest the blade, both triggers were pulled. A wide hole was blown into it, and the sounds of viscera dripping down the wall could be just barely detected. The room seemed to be much smaller, as instead of entering, the shooter merely looked inside before taking a few steps back.

The foot of the injured man slipped, prompting the shooter to turn his head in the direction of the corner. He quietly turned, and pointed his rifle at about head height at the wall, aiming through the corner proper. A pull of the trigger sent a burst of gunfire right into it, and into the head of the man trying to remain in cover on the other side. As he fell, the shooter lowered his rifle, checking it for ammunition. He stopped suddenly, and the red dot under his visor shifted focus onto the camera itself. Staring for a moment, he then turned his gun on it and fired. The screen cut to black, and the video feed ended.

Velma stared at the screen a moment longer, then turned back to the chief. He was rubbing his chin, brows knit together in frustration. "It's not much to go on, but it's something. Bastard finally slipped up, let's see if we can make anything of it. I want everyone to find something, anything in that video that can help us locate our motorcycle man. I don't care what. Get to work."

As the groups dispersed, Velma thought about the video. It was honestly chilling. The man showed no regard for the people he killed, and his total silence and concealing attire made him seem like a horror movie villain. Something about it made her think it wasn't quite a vigilante seeking justice against criminal groups. He was just too skilled.

However, it wasn't time for theories just yet. She turned to her new team mates and hoped she looked friendly but also capable. "Velma Holt. Good to work with both of you."

Behind her, Lance half raised a hand. "Lance Walker, Jack and Anne, right?" Even though his greeting was fairly normal, Velma had a feeling he was only half paying attention and instead thinking about the video they had just seen. She couldn't really blame him.

Juzo crossed his arms as he looked skeptically at Heather, cocking his head to the side curiously. “Alright, fancy disk. I’ll roll with that,” he said with a subtle nod, looking up when the drones flew up. He blinked when the shields rose up across them, switching view so he could get a good look up close at them without actually being up there with them.

“Catch?” he asked, having been preoccupied with the drones. He made a little noise at the idea of Heather hurling a disk at him. He crooked his arm as the disk swung low, and the magnetic tips of his fingers caught the disk easily. He made a face that seemed a little too prideful considering the situation, and then began to spin around the disk a la Harlem Globetrotters on one of his little thumb pads. “Oh, I bet I can definitely get good with these,” Juzo said confidently, already loving them in their non-lethal state.

He caught the other one in the other hand, while still spinning the other one. The disk had zipped onto his hand effortlessly, and he placed the one he had been spinning on top of the other and tucked them both between his arm and side. “I’m definitely looking forward to the live-fire. Can you make these things explode? I think that would be cool,” he commented, giving them a once over. He mirrored her thumbs up with his free hand, and prepared to get throwing.

He caught the last disk easily and twisted, flinging it with a majority of his force towards the first drone. He was unsure how accurate that actually would have been considering he had been in such a rush, so he tweaked its trajectory magnetically so that it would, hopefully, hit the mark. He then eyed Heather, digging a sharp heel into the ground, and flung one right over her head, towards the drone behind her. He stuck his tongue out again, giving her a playful smile. He loved testing days.

Silence hung over the room for those few moments after the tape had ended. Jack held a frown and tightly crossed arms while he watched, eyeing every detail closely, at the same time feeling that familiar sort of sickness that came with seeing someone so blatantly disregard life. The actual method was far from the worst sorts of murders the bureau had dealt with, but the sheer effectiveness, speed, and skill that the killer demonstrated, it was clear that they were dealing with someone professional. While there was no footage from each room, he could imagine that they were emptied with brutal efficiency.

While he was focused, Anne took notice of Velma and Lance's approach, turning towards them to offer a greeting of her own. "Likewise. Let's try not to let this guy walk free for too much longer, yeah?" She nudged Jack's elbow with her own to draw his attention back out of the video. They wouldn't get much figured out if he was just thinking about it to himself, anyway. Some talking would be good for them.

Jack uncrossed his arms, instead offering his right hand for a greeting handshake. "Right. Nice to meet ya." The mechanical limb hopefully wasn't too foreboding for a friendly greeting, what with its obviously robotic joints and jet-black dermal plating. It was hard to be offended if someone turned one down from a clearly combat-ready aug, but at the same time it acted as a good determination of a new partner's sentiments towards that type of thing. One could expect anyone in the CCIB to be more accepting towards augmented officers, but a few in the past had been viciously bitter towards the very concept. Seeing so many people using them for crime could get grating.

Once greetings were complete, Anne suggested a starting course of action. "Okay, so. Once we get our files, we'll pick through them and see what might be useful. The cleaners probably brought in some important things from the crime scene, too. Computers, phones, bodies. Anything in that building could be a lead." Information on intact databases, call logs, text messages, any sort of communication or information could offer some insight as to what exactly happened, and why it did. As a nice bonus, information on any surviving criminals affiliated with the group that had been wiped out could be forwarded to other officers, and possible targets for interrogations could be picked out. "Let's get going."

On the way out of the room, she stopped by a table, host to multiple palm-sized devices. A portable HDD and hologram display system, similar in appearance to a handheld transceiver, loaded up with information on the case, communications systems for the officers assigned to squads together, and data scanners. Anne took one for herself and clipped it to her belt, passing one next to it to Jack. He likewise put it on his belt for safe keeping.

-----

The idea of explosives was interesting, Heather had to admit. "Maybe? They're kinda big for explosives, though. They'd cause way too much collateral damage, and I'm not sure how well the magnetism will work if they're weighed down." Small amounts of plastic explosives molded into the interiors of a less expensive design could work, but at the same time she was worried about the effectiveness. "We'll have to see! Let's make sure you can use these without hurting yourself first, yeah?" After quickly clasping her hands together, she undid them and stepped back a bit, ready to control her drones and make sure the testing went well.

On impact of the first disk, the drone's protective barrier knocked it away into another, so Heather changed their positions to keep the disk in a back-and-forth movement between them. Close observations were made, making sure that the disk could withstand the repeated impacts. So far, it seemed to be working fine. Juzo's second throw had been unexpected, and it soared a mere inch above her (thankfully covered) face while she was looking up. Heather yelped in surprise and stumbled back, very nearly falling over entirely. Her limb pack caught her a few inches off the ground, after she watched the disk bounce off the rear drone and sail back towards Juzo.

"Ass," She mumbled out alongside a laugh. To get him back, she changed trajectory of the disk being held between two drones by shifting one, launching it at an angle towards the wall of the next, much taller building. It bounced off the wall and arced back towards Juzo, flying low towards his legs. During its path, she moved her drones again, this time keeping them in a constant circular motion in the air. Juzo proved he could hit a stationary target, so now she wanted to see if he could make his mark on something in motion.

Although the metallic hand gave Velma a moment's pause, she took it and gave it a shake. Part of her wondered if he could tell if her handshake was any good through the metal plating. She stepped aside as Lance took the same hand without blinking, which somehow felt stranger than if he'd acknowledged it- like he hadn't even registered it, which she honestly really wouldn't put past him. Velma considered briefly shaking Anne's hand, but the woman didn't offer her so she decided against it, hoping it wouldn't offend her. Still, the two didn't seem to immediately hate them, which Velma hoped was an indication that the team would at least function.

Anne's plan seemed as good as any, so they followed her out the door, stopping at the table to pick up the pocket devices. Velma clipped it on her belt, while Lance dropped his in a coat pocket. Velma silently anticipated never seeing it again.

As they walked down the halls, Lance rubbed his hands together in an anxious, twitchy motion, knitting and unknitting his fingers together. The video was still bouncing around in his brain. The fact that it was the best clue they had to go on was frustrating to say the least. They had almost nothing to go on. Maybe if there was some way to figure out height in relation to the door- but even that would be ballparking, and do little to narrow down the range of suspects since they had none. The red light under the visor, however, had caught his attention. An aug of some kind, like a bionic eye, could create a sort of light like that- it could be useful. However, he needed to learn more about the case before going down that sort of trail.

They came to one of the larger evidence rooms in the police station. The room arranged cold metal tables lit with glaring white light, with various scraps of evidence that could be important arranged on top. It was all carefully tagged. A door in the back led to the room where the bodies were, at least for now while officers investigated them. A few other police officers who had apparent had the same plan were examining objects on the tables. "What should we check out first?" Velma asked. She sort of doubted the victims had useful evidence, as it seemed they had all been shot, but it couldn't be ruled out. It could be better to divide and conquer.

“My best quality,” Juzo laughed, jumping up into the air and catching the disc that had been coming back towards him. He landed in a crouch, and with a slight turn of his neck, caught movement in the corner of his high. Using his prosthetics, he vaulted off the ground, the disc that was coming at him zipping through the air beneath him. He landed yet again, his legs clanking on the ground. He waggled a finger at Heather, as if to signify that it was a nice try.

He dragged the disc back magnetically, so it wouldn’t land on some unfortunate bystander on the road beneath. When the disc hit his magnetic open palm, he fanned himself with both of them. He liked these discs so far. “I mean, you’re smart. I bet you could put, like, C4 in this. A tiny bit, and it would just go boom. How heavy can explosives be?” he said with a smile. While he had no idea how the mechanisms that Heather made worked, he knew he had seen her make some pretty incredible things.

Returning to the task at hand, Juzo flung one of his discs at the drone. It hit it, but didn’t hit it exactly square. It angled sharply back towards him, and he ducked. It impaled itself into the stone on top of the roof. “Oops,” he yelped. He jogged over to the edge of the roof, where the disc was firmly lodged. He bent down and tried to pull it, and then stopped. “Yo, H, get a load of these sick wheels,” he called, pointing down towards the street. Some dude had excellent taste in motorcycles.

Jack and Anne entered the evidence room just after their new partners, and without wasting much time, got to work coming up with some ideas. The bodies were likely a dud when it came to any evidence. Their perp was doubtlessly using a non-registered gun, and the security footage gave no clear indication of what the basic model was. Worse yet, during the investigation, no empty cartridges were left behind; caseless ammunition left even less of a trace to follow. While some markings could be noted on bullets removed from corpses, the impact often left them deformed.

"Run ID on all the bodies. Let's see if we can find out who these people are," Anne answered, giving at least one option for them. "And make sure to check them for augs. Especially anything in the head. One of these guys could have a whole other viewpoint backed up in his skull." She took her own advice, and moved further into the room, back towards the morgue where the dead men were resting. Upon entering, she frowned at the sight of the bodies, stripped of clothing and awaiting autopsy. There were a lot of them in there, each one covered in bullet holes. What bothered her was less the presence of the fatal wounds, but how uniform they were. A few over the heart, or in the forehead. The deed had been done with inhuman accuracy, each shot differentiated by mere centimeters.

First things first, Anne decided to run a basic check on the bodies. She pulled the device off her belt and held it out ahead of her, giving the button on the front a quick press to activate it. The display feature activated, a hologram projection hovering a few inches above the device itself. With some maneuvering through the menus, she then opened the scanner, which broadcasted from the back of the handheld machine. Lines of light formed a grid that scanned the face of the body nearest where she stood, which was then compared to various mugshots within the police station's database.

Nothing. Just a small-name carjacker and drug runner, devoid of any known augmentations. He was immediately set lower on the priority list to cut open and poke around inside. Still, she felt it was worth looking over them all, and continued to scan over the bodies one at a time. Each of them had some form of record, a few much more severe than the others. Bank robberies, hits, larceny, extortion. All distressingly common crimes in the city, but nothing that stuck out to her. At least not until she was about halfway down the line of tables, scanning someone with a busted head. His record was much more technologic in nature, including security threats and theft of personal information. But better than that, he had an aug or two.

"Think I got something," Anne spoke up, talking to whoever may have accompanied her to the morgue. "Wayne Phillips, previously affiliated with Blacklight Security. Got fired because he was looking through credit cards in the database. Went on to leak a bunch of the higher-ups' info before going off the map." Adjusting the display, she brought up his medical information as well. "And he had some modifications done. Basic enhancements and a neurological link. Must be wireless." She could see no external ports on his neck, but a more thorough look through his skull could lead them somewhere. "If we can find a database in him, then we might get something good out of it."

Jack, meanwhile, was looking over firearms and other weapons recovered from the scene. Before touching anything, he pulled a glove over his left hand. His right could go without. One more advantage of a fully mechanical limb. His eyes were clearly at work as well, apertures widening and narrowing as augmented reality displays took note of all the parts of the weapon, both for information on it and any sort of identification to the people who had been using them during the assault. Fingerprints on the stocks and handles were quickly run through, while jailbroken ID tags on some of the more advanced weaponry lead him back to some reported thefts.

"Looks like most of these were nabbed off an import. Foreign made, tags broken into, good quality. Must have been a recent gain." His hand tilted to an unnatural degree as he examined the weapon, doing an almost complete 180 to the right as he focused more on the information floating around the gun than the weapon itself. "A few thefts could be linked to these things. There were three reported in the last couple months. All of 'em follow a pretty uniform method, going loud as hell and leaving a ton of property damage behind." He turned the gun back over, readying his database for synchronization. Upon turning it on, the VR displays became fully visible holograms broadcasted from the machine, and the added access to the police database loaded up cases matching his descriptions.

"They could be associated with the Mori family, or at least they got these from them. Their address doesn't quite match up with Mori territories, but it's something to keep in mind." He paused, wondering just what the people brought in could have been doing with the much larger, more infamous group. None of them particularly looked like people the Moris would deal with on matters greater than a simple under-the-table trade, and most of them weren't exactly notable criminals. Why would no-names like them be taken out so thoroughly?

-----

Heather couldn't help but laugh as well. "Hey, no arguments there," She answered, putting on a jokingly flirtatious tone. It was hard to disagree with such a statement, and his choice in outfits certainly helped emphasize it. She didn't dwell on the subject for too long, since actual discussions about the devices came up. Putting her hands on her hips, she considered the possibility, and smiled at the compliment. Her helmet kept her face hidden, but something about her speaking perked up and made it clear she appreciated the gesture.

"Aw, thanks. And yeah, that's one option, but then you'd need a detonator. As of now, those things are kinda expensive to go blowing up, you know?" She pursed her lips, trying to come up with a few potential quick solutions to the idea. "Give me some time to tweak them a bit, I'll need to make them a bit more affordable before we go making them explode. Maybe downsize? Could save us a ton on materials..." She trailed off, and as Juzo missed the return catch on one of the disks, she had to wonder if he wouldn't end up busting them before she got the chance. At the very least, she got a nice view out of his little mess up, and whispered a quick "Nice," to herself.

She decided not to ogle him for too much longer, acknowledging his statement. "Mm? Oh, sorry, I was already enjoying the view." While only halfway joking, she made her way over to the edge of the roof and leaned over herself, resting her hands on the tall barrier that stood ahead of them. Her drones, still hovering around behind her, moved slightly down and back to make them somewhat less visible from the road as they watched the 'sick wheels' approaching.

A large and quite advanced-looking motorbike was approaching the building at a casual pace. Slick black paint reflected the lights around it, and the driver, clad head-to-toe in heavy-looking biker gear, kept an eye on the road while he drove along. The motorcycle slowed down, eventually stopping just ahead of the building that they were standing on. Heather made a sound of approval, clearly enjoying the craftsmanship of the machine. "Damn, that thing must have been expensive. I want one," She commented, lifting the visor to her helmet to get a clearer look.

Lance and Velma exchanged a glance after Anne called out some orders. Velma decided to follow the other woman, leaving Lance behind in the main room with Jack. She steeled herself for a grisly sight, but was surprised to find that, when she entered after Anne, the bodies weren't as bad as she thought they would be. The bullet holes had a clean precision to them that removed any element of gore, besides blood, but it was almost as unsettling as if they had been killed in a messier way. And the exact strikes made her feel as if the theory that he was augmented was more likely than ever.

Still, she needed to focus on the task at hand. She pulled out her own device and switched on the scanner, then went to the side of the room that Anne didn't choose. Velma saved the profiles of each man that came up, but nothing seemed likely to be very helpful. Small time criminal after small time criminal, and nothing that seemed to tie them together except that they had all died the same horrible way.

Anne found something before Velma did, but Velma didn't go over to her. Instead, she listened as she finished scanning the last few men- nothing useful, naturally. "Seems to be the only thing we've got to look into right now, so it's worth a shot," she said. "I didn't turn up anything that seemed helpful, so..." She shrugged. Velma felt like Lance knew someone who would be helpful for mining through databases, but it might not be necessary to go to an outside source. She frowned down at the last ID scan, whose worst crime on record appeared to be theft. "I don't really get it, though. I thought the deal with this guy was that he killed big time criminals, not people like this." She began to head toward the morgue door, then paused a bit uncertainly. "We done in here for now?" She asked Anne, beginning to push the door to the morgue open.

Meanwhile, Lance was helping Jack sort through the piles of weaponry. He immediately realized the other man's augmentations made him much more suitable to doing this than Lance, who would have had to punch in each ID number into the system individually, so he mostly just passed weaponry to Jack and memorized any noticeable details on the weaponry and ID tags. Quietly, he hoped this wasn't going to be an indication of how the rest of this team up would go.

He eyed the holograms Jack created with interest, but didn't say anything and instead read the information presented on them. "I suppose one question would be how this shooter found this particular group in the first place. Tracking crimes, weaponry? Something else entirely?" He turned over one of the guns and examined it more closely. "And what his criteria is for who gets chosen, too." Lance turned over case details in his mind, trying to find common threads. He was distracted, though, when the door leading to the morgue opened again.

Tonia had finished her work for the night and gotten paid, which was always nice, but she was still restless. She wanted something to do, but that had been her last job she'd turned up lately- and frankly, it wasn't very interesting. She sighed and leaned out the window, overlooking the city. It was a blur of bright lights and motion as always. Tonight, she felt like being a part of it.

Quickly, before the impulse faded, she pushed away from the window and began hunting for shoes. "Wally, I'm going out," she called out, finally producing a pair of black boots and mismatched socks.

"Understood. Where are you going?" Wally asked from somewhere in the house.

As she pushed her feet in the shoes, Tonia shrugged. "Just out. I'll pick up some groceries or something." Before the robot could object by saying something like 'it's late' or 'the grocery store is likely closed', she grabbed her phone, keys and wallet from the kitchen counter where she'd left them and headed towards the front door. "Later!" She said, pulling her coat off one of the hooks in the entryway as she walked out the door.

She exited the apartment and locked the door quickly, then shoved her keys in her coat pocket. Then Tonia began heading down the apartment hall to the staircase. She wasn't exactly sure where she was going, but she hoped it was somewhere at least a little exciting.

Tesla's ride wasn't as long as it was boring, his target was almost in sight. He figured the rest of his work would be done after pick-up. He slowed down and crept towards the rendezvous point, far ahead of schedule. Spotting the younger woman standing there he narrowed his eyes and came to a stop directly in front of her. "Are you ready to go"? He asked her, his hand resting on the throttle.

"I'm guessing that makes you my ride then." She said climbing onto the back of Tesla's bike. "The name's Hazard, what's your name?"

"I'm Tesla".

"Can I call you Tess? What do you do Tess?"

Tesla blew air sharply out of his nose before replying. "I'm a courier, you know what a courier is right?"

"It's a person who delivers mails and packages".

"Good, so you know I'm here to pick you up and deliver you somewhere when the boss tells me where you're to go". He sighed, revving the motorcycle's engine. "So let's keep the chatter to a minimum while we work. Hold on tight though".

Hazard let out a puff of air as she squeezed closer to Tesla as the motorcycle jutted forward. She held closely too him as the bike pulled them ever closer to the city. She wondered why they had her wait out here if she was going to be brought back in. She let her mind wonder as they rode, their trip being rather uneventful for most duration. Hazard's eyes wondered upwards as they rode through a denser part of the city. Catching a glimpse of a small drone floating above them between two buildings she spoke. "Hey Tess, wait, I think I saw something up there. Stop the bike, let's go check it out."

"We can't really afford-".

"Just stop already, it'll take like 5 minutes". Hazard interrupted him. Her eyes looking at where the drone had been. As Tesla stopped Hazard jumped off the motorcycle, her feet landing with a dull thud on the concrete. "Hurry up, let's go check it out". She spoke loudly as she headed towards the building's fire escape.
