This is starting to look bad. Hortence reloaded her Smitty’s with something more explosive, she might be able to trip the wanker. Sure… high end explosives reduced to bleedin' tripwire supplements.
There are still quite a few civilians hiding in these buildings, but if they weren’t smart enough to flee properly that’s their own damn fault… Couldn’t spare the men if I wanted.
Ducking out of her cover she looked at the hulking demon creature that was wrecking havoc. It stood at least 10 foot high and 6 feet across the shoulders; real ugly and real dumb looking. It would be like an ogre if it wasn’t black, with huge leathery wings and well, on fire. One other important difference was in it’s eyes, in spite of it’s mouth and flat face making it look like a stupid bulldog, it’s eyes showed it’s true intelligence. This was no beastly brute; this was a meticulously intelligent force of destruction.
As the beast took a quick unbalanced step towards her, she fired expertly towards where it’s foot would land “WIRE!” she called out to the two men hiding in the buildings around it.
The demon smirked as it saw it’s enemy’s plan unfold around it, just as it was about to step down it instead jumped with it’s other leg, sending it upwards enough to unfold it’s wings and launch towards Hortence. “well **** me sideways…”.
Hortence dodged quickly backwards, out of the way of the two ton of monster, smashing the ground she was on a moment ago. Distance sounds good about now… let’s hope this thing ****ing works. She activated the valve at her hip which burst out in a smokescreen of steam. Then, under the cover of smoke she activated the cloaker attached to her arm which was “plugged” into her ring. She disappeared within the smokescreen, practically invisible with her new cloaking device actually working.
As she was about to find cover and rethink her strategy she heard a bursting sound from the demon, and then saw a solid 1½ ft radius pillar of fire shoot from it’s maw towards the one end of her smokescreen. The line of fire moved towards her and she didn’t have anywhere left to dodge. She was hit and send flying by the force of the demonic breath. She tumbled backwards, pain burning from her hip. She was alright but a lot of her tech must have been fried, she couldn’t take another hit like that.
The demon smirked looking towards it’s exposed and defeated pray “so much for the strength of the paladins” it mocked as it started walking slowly towards her. It’s belly lighting up with the promise of another incoming pillar of flame.
Hortence fired her gun at the face of the creature but it didn’t even seem to phase it. It stopped ten feet in front of her, snarling down towards her as it prepared to execute her. It then cried out in pain as it was struck in the back by a huge sword. It turned to retaliate, but before it could, it was gripped at the neck and the force of its own turn accelerated to assist its assailant in smashing it face first into the nearby wall.
Rafaela stepped back and then swung her sword like a bat to a ball, smashing the demonic creature through the wall, the sound of its body clearing at least another on the way was made sweeter by the sound of its whines as it did.
The large knightly woman reached a hand down to Hortence “looked like you could use a hand” she smiled at her with that stupid smug face of hers.
“What are you doing here!? I had this under control!” Hortence got up by her own power, looking over her injuries and finding an adrenaline pin to ram into herself, she didn’t have time to be in pain.
Rafaela simply arched an eyebrow at the, clearly unimpressed by Hortence’s reaction “You are welcome”.
Hortence clenches her fists as she looks at the large woman in front of her. She gives a very clear sigh, then looks towards the hole where the demon was “… IF you insist on helping then take care of Scaley while I take care of the portal! It’s still open, so finish up here and then come after me, might need to throw you in front of something bigger!”
Hortence rushes towards the portal, running over the design of the thing as she runs. She tried blowing it up before when she was close to it, but it didn’t work. She was going to have to shut it off the mechanical way, however that was… she’d never seen anything quite like it, but she knew she could figure it out! She had to.

A few hours earlier, the Seer had summoned both Akire and Akira to the Tower, telling them that they were both needed. Rather than order a coachman to take them, Kire chose to walk. Four years living in this world with her, Akira had noticed how the Empress, whenever she could, opted out of the luxuries her birthright had afforded her. It was hard to believe, looking at the tall blonde woman dressed in her knight’s armor, that they were two versions of the same person, born in different worlds. Akira was a short, black-haired, twenty year old, born and raised in some tropical country on an Earth she likely would not see again. This was the farthest from the life she had grown up in as she could think of.

And yet here they were, standing inside the Seer’s chamber, in a Tower not that far from the Palace grounds. Kire’s cousin and scholar of all-things-Paladin lived in the Tower, but the Tower had always been there, even, according to myth, long before the first of Kire’s people even settled in this land. The Seer was already there when they arrived, and now she—he? It? It was hard to tell—was telling Kire to bring her along. “She’s not ready!” the Empress seethed, stepping in between the Seer and Aki. Not that the Wyvern warrior could do anything about it; if this Seer was responsible for making them both Paladins, then Akira doubted there was anything either of them could do to challenge what she said.

“You’re not going. It’s too dangerous,” Kire said the moment the Seer disappeared. Akira furrowed her brow.
“But—you know we were ordered to go.”
“**** their orders,” the blonde said with an imperious gesture. Well, that was one thing about being Empress, Akira thought. You’d hate taking orders from anybody but yourself. “I don’t understand why they’d even give you a Ring, when you’ve had no experience in battle, or in magic, or anything. And, as usual, they didn’t tell us where, or why, or what sort of place we’re going to! You’re not going.”

Fast forward to now, where Akira hurtled, screaming, through the barriers between worlds. It was a strange thing, summoning a portal. She could never get used to it. Then again, she’d only been given her Ring barely a month ago. It was like following a thin thread that wound forever into the darkness. Then the thread would stretch taut, tugging at her brain, and suddenly the universe exploded with light as the thread pulled her bodily into the wormhole. Was this what it felt like, to be deconstructed into cells, molecules, quarks, to join the swirling storm of energy? Like falling forever.

But, really, the whole journey only took a few excruciating seconds before it spat her out, putting her atoms back together and sending her crashing into something—weird. Pain was the first thing that registered to her, jagged stabs of sensation all over her body and in her brain. But when the last of the blinding light from the portal faded, she gaped, seeing a monstrous shadow standing over her. “****!” She scrambled to her feet and out of its way, though it seemed to not have noticed her, its eyes trained on a tall woman a few paces in front of her. She caught sight of the armor and yelled, “Kire!” before realizing it wasn’t Akire, but someone else entirely.

Betting that the monster was trouble and the woman was fighting it, Aki did the only thing she could and focused on a pile of rubble at the monster’s feet, hoping there were sizable scraps of metal in there. With as much concentration as she could muster after hurtling through the multiverse and getting hurtled at a ten foot monstrosity, she sent the metallic debris flying. Or tried to. The most it did was distract the demon, hitting it square on the face just before it unleashed a jet of flame at the woman with the sword. “Uh. ****.” Aki ducked into the hole it had left on the wall just before it directed the blast at her.

(long awaited, but here it is. sorry again for the long wait)

It had been a terrible day for Rafaela, but fate would have it that it should become even worse still. Her day had started out with her being late for a meeting with the other officers, due to the fact that Duke Cranor had thought is hilarious to keep her at his party as close to dawn as possible, resulting in her getting only very little sleep. This usually wasn't a problem for her, she had to remain vigilant no matter the circumstances, and such a little bother as too little sleep should not be in her way for taking care of her duties. However, she was woken up by the smell of smoke, and she had to put out a fire first thing in the morning, set by one of their recruits, a stupid son of some rich dude, resulting in her arriving at her meeting late, and smelling of smoke.
The officers, being who they were, hadn't let the chance pass to tell her how incompetent she was, and how ridiculous it was to give a woman the title of Captain, even if it was only honorary. Honestly, she had been only seconds away from doing unspeakable things to them, when one of her soldiers burst through the door, and started mumbling about ambush and death.
Needless to say, she had to leave that meeting early.

When she reached the barracks, things didn't really get much better.
She had sent a group of her division out on a rather simple mission; it was just a matter of helping one of the too rich citizens with getting from one place to another. However, that idiotically simple mission had apparently ended in an ambush, and now two of her soldiers were dead, and five were seriously injured; whereof four of those were hysterics, and she had to spend two hours to calm them down enough to actually get medical help. By the time she was done, she had the audacity to think that it at least couldn’t get any worse.
Oh how wrong she was.
When she finally left the barracks, having left her boys in a much better shape than before, some messenger boy approached her, telling her about all of the wonderful demons practically falling out of the portal.

In short, Rafaela had had a terrible day, and honestly, the only bright side about the day was that she got to save Hortence’s ass for once. Usually, Rafaela wouldn’t even look in her general direction, unless she had to hunt her down, naturally. However, in the fight against demons, all bets are off between the two.
Even if they did agree to split up the area surrounding the portal back when they first realised, then she honestly doubted that Hortence was going to care much about Rafaela passing into her area, when she was just seconds away from being burnt into a crust.
She didn’t have much time to revel in the good feeling, because suddenly someone else, clearly not demonic, was dropping through the portal, and Rafaela had to jump out of the way, and hide behind a crumbling pillar to save herself. She managed to get out of the way just in time, her cape, however, caught fire, so she quickly ripped it off. This was the fifth cape she had ruined this week, and honestly, who the hell had even thought that capes were a good part of a military uniform in the first place?
She got out from her hiding spot, feeling really ****, and really, she just wanted the day to be over and done with.
She saw Hortence running towards the portal, and decided to let her deal with closing that, and then focused on keeping the demons out of her way instead. Fuelled by her new purpose, she swung her sword with practiced ease, and struck down whatever demonic creature that would dare to cross her path.

((yay! Just got around to replying, myself))

Aki crouched behind her makeshift shelter, cringing. Just her damned luck, winding up in a dimension with huge demonic creatures. Risking a peek, she saw the imposing woman in armor swinging a sword expertly at her opponents. “Holy ****,” she muttered. Well, strong and skilled though the woman might be, she couldn’t keep this up if the portal didn’t close and keep spitting out demons. Get your ass out of there and help, dammit! With that mental self-reproach, Akira took a deep breath and ran out of her hiding place, barely managing to duck out of the way of falling debris caused by a demon getting thrown backward from the armored woman’s assault.

Unfortunately, Aki had attracted the attention of another demon, thankfully smaller but no less menacing-looking. Fumbling with her belt, she unsheathed a small knife and gripped it firmly. It wouldn’t have been able to damage the huge demon earlier, but this one might be more manageable. She had been training her powers with this knife and was the only piece of metal she was confident she could wield expertly with her psyche. “Catch!” she yelled, throwing the knife at the advancing demon, her aim guided by a mental command. The knife hit the demon in the eye, making it shriek and utter gibberish. Before it could dislodge it himself, the knife darted out of the socket and plunged again, this time into its other eye.

She hadn’t harmed an actual living thing with her ability until today. Shaken, she held out her hand and the knife flew swiftly back to her, hilt-first. The other demons were still heading towards the armored woman, but Aki focused, instead, on the second figure standing by the portal machine or whatever that was. “Hey!” she yelled, her hands up after sheathing the knife, her pant leg bloody from where she had wiped it clean, “hey! You trying to shut that down? I have an idea.” No time to catch her breath. “Look. Uh. Might be faster if we overload the portal by opening another beside it. I could try one on my own, but if I’m right and you’re a Paladin too, you can open another with me and cancel it out, make it collapse.”

(and then I didn't post forever... sorry about the delay, stuff's been kind of crazy here. However it looks like we're done with everything and I'm good to get this thread moving for real)

Hortence made it to the portal, a large shimmering ring of light, changing in between a red and orange hue. It was elevated about 1.5 meters in the air, above a round mechanical platform which measured a little under 2 meters in diameter. Hortence kneeled down to take off the outer panels of the machine, if she could shut it off they'd be golden.
She heard the new girl yelling... that woman had come out of the portal too... She looked like she was on our side but this could be one of those seductive demons from legends. Regardless, what she was saying was insane! create another portal to fuze out this one!? that's insane!
Hortence began work on getting to the gyrocore of the machine, she feared that there might be some magic hoodoo making it work, but it thankfully didn't seem to be the case. She found what she was looking for, the Gyrocore which ran the machine. She just had to dissable it to stop it from keeping the portal open! small problem though... it wasn't on, the entire machine appeared to be completly shut off in fact. It was the cause of the portal, no doubt about it, but it looked like it might not keep it open at all, instead it's only purpose was to kickstart the rift into existence and then just chill...

"well **** me..." Hortence looked over the machines inner workings, getting lost in it's intriquite workings "DON'T MIND IF I DO!" a deep perverted voice came from behind her, a humansized piglike creature, almost as fat as it was tall had snuck up behind her. It grapped out after her with it's huge meaty hand but Hortence managed use the machine to flip over the hand of the slow moving creature. The beast grunted frustrated. Hortence sized up her new enemy, though she kind of wished she hadn't, the incredibly foul looking creature had large hunks of rotting flesh hidden in it's fat folds, rashes, clumps of filth, blisters and mosslike protrusions all over it's skin. To top it off the demon was nude and quite... eager... Hortence almost threw up a little in her mouth as she looked over the creature, she was glad the mask filtered out the smell of the creature because she was sure it smelled as bad as it looked...

The creature charged towards her with a gleefully evil expression. Hortence took aim and fired a well aimed shot where the demon probably wanted it the least, it whined out in pitifull pain and toppled over "pathetic... this is why we wear armor... creep" the demon opened it's maw, presumably to shout some profanities at her, but as it did it had a small clip of grenade fired deep into it's belly. The demon had an incredibly dumb expression before it's insides blew it's stomach open. It started melting into the Aether as demons did when sustaining fatal injury. Soon dissolving into nothingness.

Hortence took a deep breath, getting back to the matter at hand "right... so opening a new portal to overload this one, right! brilliant..." she looked over the machine once more, this time fixing to turn it on and activate a new portal next to the existing one. The gyrocore was pretty shot, it was clearly meant to be a one time use, so she had to find a new powersource. Thankfully she had half a dusin of those active on her suit, a bit of a waste but it wasn't excactly the time to lament it.

She choose to shut down her protective vest, it was pretty fried from the earlier attack by the demon and it probably wouldn't stop a lot more anyway. Removing the vest send a shot of intense pain rushing through her "right... got burned pretty bleedin' badly.." she let out a grunt of pain as she got the vest off, her left side had some visibly seared flesh, but that would have to wait. She found the Ticker in the vest, removing it with a swift motion, "this better ****ing' work..." she swapped the Ticker with the Gyrocore, swapped a few gears around in the machine and closed it.

The machine started humming, the shaking and then a light appeared from it, sparks and electricity started running across it's flat surface and soon a portal started forming next to the already existing one. It swirved though, the two portals energies mixed and the new portal couldn't form properly as it was drained into the existing one. The smaller portal was sucked into the existing one after a few seconds, and then the existing portal seemed to implode on itself, dissapearing in a shimmer of light.

The demons surrounding the area seemed to all pause, like they had been punched in the stomach. The demons who were large but weak started dematerialising into the Aether almost immediatly, they simply couldn't keep their shape. Most of the rest would follow suit pretty quickly, but there were some demons here who were either small enough, or strong enough to keep on this plane for some time, enough time to kill everyone in revenge if they slipped up...

Hortence was in bad shape, the wave from the portal had knocked her back against a wall. Without protection to her torso she didn't have the protection to withstand such a blow, she struggled to get up but she felt the world around her darken, she slumped back down, out cold.

The shock wave from coming from the portal was brutal. Rafaela was happy that she was standing rather far away from it, because even from the distance, the blow almost made her fall over. As it was, she managed to stand her ground, and used to moment of confusing to cut down the big bad in front of her.
While the portal was down, then she knew that they were far from done. The place was still wriggling with demons, despite the portal having taken most of them out, and Hortence was out cold, so they could not count on her support. Wonderful, the one time where it was super impractical for her to be unconscious, she was going to go ahead and be unconscious.
She would have to count on the new girl now, despite the fact that her alliances were sketchy at best. However, she couldn't care less about that in that moment, because she knew that it would be too hard for her to take all of these demons on her own, even if she might be able to do it, then it was not a risk that she was willing to take for now. She could always cut her down later, they just really needed to cut off all of the demons, before they could make it to the city.
"Oi! New girl" she yelled, assuming that the girl would know who she was talking to. She knew how to order people around, as well as how to get her own hands dirty "Take out the lesser ones, you should be able to do it with that nifty knife of your's" she yelled, making her way towards a smaller one, which was on it's way towards the lifeless Hortence; and just hoped that the girl would just follow her orders without any questions. God, she would kill to have her soldiers with her right now, not that they were trained to fight demons, but at least they knew how to take an order.
She once again swung her sword like a bat, and decapitated the demon, which thankfully had a thin neck, and turned around to defend the lifeless form of Hortence. She might not be a big fan of her normally, but she wasn't about to let some disgusting demon take advantage of her. That was not how this was going to work out.
She got a better grip on her sword, slowly feeling the exhaustion settling in, but she could not let down her guard yet. She would just have to slay a couple of demons, get Hortence out of harm's way, possible get her some medical help, and then get to know what the **** that new girl was up to. God, she really should have stayed in bed.

Having never seen any other Paladin other than Kire, her guardian, Akira spent a few moments watching the stranger do something to her vest and tinker with the portal machine. Just as she had somehow felt in her gut that the solution to shutting down the portal was another portal, Aki had a feeling she knew what the woman was doing—giving the machine an alternative power source to jumpstart another portal. Remembering her wonderful crash-landing, she knew this second one would cause another explosion and began sprinting away. If she was right and the portals would cause an explosion, they would hopefully take a few demons down with them.

She had barely managed to find adequate shelter when the blast sent her tumbling forward, rolling into a pile of debris. She only had enough presence of mind to desperately reach out to a rusty sheet of tin roof that had fallen off the nearby ramshackle building. The piece of metal followed her mental command and covered her just as she crouched against the debris pile, arms over her head. From the unholy screeching she could hear, Aki knew the demons were affected by the portal, too. Still coughing from the impact, she kicked off the roofing and crawled to her feet.

True enough, most of the demons seemed to have disappeared the way the critically-wounded ones did earlier, but enough were still left. Worse, the woman who jumpstarted the second portal was lying in a heap, looking very unconscious. Gulping, Akira was about to run to her when the woman she had first seen called her attention. Frowning at the label, Aki knew, though, that she had to swallow her pride for now. The woman was right; Aki could dispatch of the smaller demons with the knife. “Okay,” she muttered to herself, ignoring the pain from the new bruises blooming all over her body from getting tossed about by two portals.

Just as she had done earlier, she sent the knife flying from her hand, piercing the nearest demon through the neck before it could get its bearings back. “****, ****, ****…” Aki was on to the next demon, taking advantage of their disorientation to fatally stab them. She was about to retrieve her knife again when something yanked her by the hair, the pull strong enough to make her fall backwards. Hissing at the impact, she saw two demons leering at her. Her knife nowhere near, she kicked at the first and did her best to hit the other with her fists. Their claws ripped through her sleeves, and she could feel them drag against her skin.

“Screw you!” she yelled, pulling mentally at the nearest piece of metal around while holding a demon back by the neck. Before one of the demons could bite onto her hand, her knife, which thankfully had fallen nearby, flew straight towards the demon’s face. Aki kicked it off her and chucked the knife at the second demon, watching as it took its last, gurgling breath before fading, her knife falling to the ground after the flesh around it had dissipated. Her work wasn’t over yet, though, so she swallowed her panic, picked up her knife, and scanned the place for the last few demons.

The warrior-woman had plowed through many surviving demons, herself, so she made her way towards the unconscious one, hoping that she wasn’t dead. A few demons had spotted her and were making their way towards her. Aki sent the corrugated tin sheet from earlier flying towards the demons to distract them before the knife did its work. With Aki and the knight dividing the work between them, it seemed that they had dealt with all the demons left. For now. She felt something tickling her upper lip; wiping it with the back of her hand, she pressed her lips thin, seeing blood. Great. Must be from having exerted her power today. It was the most action she had found herself in, well, ever. Either that, or all the getting-knocked-back gave her internal injuries. Still shaking, she wiped the knife against her pant leg and made her way towards the tall woman. “She gonna be okay?” she asked.

At the end of it all, Rafaela didn't quite know how many of those disgusting demons that she had taken down, only that they all seemed to be gone for. She turned her attention to Hortence, who was in pretty bad shape, but would live. Not that she had really thought anything different. Hortence seemed to be able to survive just about anything thrown her way. She held out her sword, and watched as all the pieces went back into her armour, leaving only the hilt in her hand, which she strapped back onto her back where it belonged. They seemed to be safe for now.

She turned her attention to the mysterious girl, who had fallen out of the portal, and nods. "Yeah, I am going to need to get her back to the city though, she is in badly need of medical help," she states, obviously not very keen on the idea of helping the unconscious Hortence, but after what they just did, she felt like it was her duty. "How are you holding up? Seems like those demons got to you as well." She notes, used to having to look for the badly wounded in her battalion after a fight. Honestly, she just praised herself lucky for being in armour, and without her stupid cape. God, she was going to get her ass handed to her as soon as she got back.

She gently took hold of Hortence, trying not to make her injuries even worse, as she lifted her from the ground with little to no effort. "If you are in the need of medical attention, I suggest that you follow me. I'll make sure that we all get back into shape," she said in a confident voice, knowing that she would be able to pull the strings, to make sure that they all got taken care of. She just praised herself lucky that she was able to get out in a pretty fine shape. She was sore, and so endlessly tired, but she had managed to get through mostly intact. Thank God for all of her training.

Without waiting for an answer from the strange girl, she started moving towards the city, walking quite a bit slower than she usually would, and that not due to the added weight of Hortence; she just really wasn't looking forward the coming back home. While she probably could manage to shut them all up, then she just knew that she would never hear the end of it, for actually making sure that Hortence got medical care. Most officers weren't really a fan of the colleagues ensuring that criminals were doing well.

While relieved at the woman’s answer, Akira was nevertheless concerned at the fact that she needed medical help. After that disastrous portal jump, Aki wasn’t about to attempt another and worsen the woman’s injuries; besides, she knew nothing about this new world. She would have to trust the knight on this. Anyway, it looked like they did know each other. Aki’s eyes lingered on the smoldering wreck that used to be the gate where she, and the demons, came from, before following the woman’s lead. Still too shaken by what had just happened, it hadn’t yet occurred to her to answer the woman’s question, trudging behind her while silently nursing the many bruises and aches all over her body that adrenaline had previously not let her feel. Plus, there was that migraine. At least she wasn’t bleeding out of her nose anymore.

Hugging herself and trying to breathe slowly, she took in the rubble around them, the destruction the blast and the demons caused. There were a few other people around following them, and she assumed they must be either with the knight or with the unconscious woman, based on their gear. Too many questions were crowding around her head. “Hey,” she said, looking up at the tall woman. She was imposing, not just because of the armor, which, just moments ago, had formed part of her large sword. Did she have the same powers Aki did with metal? “Are you two really Paladins? What is this place? And those demons, what—” She stopped herself before she could ramble on, knowing there was no way the stranger was going to answer all of them.

Clearing her throat, she caught up with the soldier, seeing as her comparatively smaller stature made her take smaller steps. “My name’s Akira, and—oww.” Having breathed too fast, she felt a sharp pain with her next intake of breath. Okay, maybe she wasn’t as all right as she thought she was. Doubling over, she did her best not to expand her lungs too much, but the sharp pains were already there. She couldn’t have broken a rib, could she? “Uh, y-yeah, maybe I need some help, too.”

It had been her intention to just ignore the ramblings from the stranger, Akira apparently, but when she seemed to be in pain as well, Rafaela stopped in her tracks, and turned to look at her properly. It was obvious that breathing was hard for it, and that worried her deeply. It was never a good sign when someone was struggling with breathing. "Try not to strain your lungs, small but slow breaths," she said, as she knelt down in front of her, still cradling Hortence carefully. "Get on my back, and hold on to me as well as you can," she said, because it was the only thing she could think of doing.

She couldn't very well shift Hortence around in her arms, because then she might just injure her even more, which really would be counterproductive. "I'm captain Rafaela Stringer," she stated, feeling that it would only be polite to introduce herself, now that Akira had done the same. However, she would prefer that the niceties waited, until they were in a more comfortable place, and both Hortence and Akira had gotten medical attention.

It was an absolutely horrible day, and she just wanted it to be over as soon as humanly possible. However, she knew her own luck enough to know that it probably was far from. She could not wait to get into bed, and then sleep for a long time. "Any further questions can wait, until we are back where it is safe, and where you can get medical attention," she stated, leaving no room for discussion. She was not in the mood for it, and she would have to concentrate on walking slowly and carefully, as to not hurt either of the two women she was carrying.

Having the tall woman kneel and offer to carry her was the farthest kind of “help” Akira was thinking of, but she couldn’t turn it down now. “Uh—okay.” Feeling a bit like an idiot now, she did as she was told and wrapped her arms around the knight’s shoulders. It was uncomfortable, pressed against the armored back of the warrior, but she did her best to regulate her breathing. “Captain Rafaela Stringer,” Akira repeated when the stranger finally introduced herself. Guess she could count herself lucky the woman spoke at all; she struck Aki as a woman of few words type of person. Especially after she mentioned no questions until they were in a safer place. Great.

Anyway, it was probably better for Akira at this point to speak as little as possible. Hoping her arms didn’t give out until they reached, well, wherever the woman was supposed to take them, Aki tried not to focus on the ache in her ribs. Seemed like the place they had just come from some was still some ways from the city proper, which was fortunate. Who knew what kind of damage the demons would have inflicted upon people at the heart of a bustling metropolis? As Rafaela moved them along, though, the number of decrepit buildings began to lessen, the locale becoming more gentrified. She knew this wasn’t Earth, at least not her Earth, and if this was another version of it, they certainly were not in her home country in the South Pacific. It was cold, and the architecture looked distinctly Victorian.

And then she saw the airships. “Holy ****!” Her gasp of surprise sent stabbing pain into her sides, making her let go of Rafaela as her body jackknifed. Her knees gave, unprepared for the abrupt landing and she lay curled up on the floor for a few seconds, coughing. “****…” Still, she kept her eyes to the sky, to the dark shapes moving above, impossible shapes she definitely had never seen on Earth before. She knew they were airships, watched enough movies, read enough books. It explained the unconscious woman’s outlandish gear, and the perpetual curtain of smog that settled all around them. Victorian. This was the stuff of her dreams.

“I-I can walk, ‘s’okay,” she mumbled as she got on all fours before mustering enough strength to stand. Her arms were getting wobbly, anyway, from hanging onto Rafaela. Thankfully, her curiosity and awe won out, for now, over her injuries, and she followed the tall woman closely as they moved through the streets of this unreal version of London. Of course it was London. Had to be. Well, at least that partly answered her earlier questions. Soon, though, she became aware of a different kind of attention coming from other people, bystanders who must be wondering where the hell these three women came from to look like they’d been through hell. She vaguely heard someone summoning guards or something, but they seemed to recognize Rafaela, or at least her outfit. She introduced herself as a captain, so she must be part of some peace-keeping force in this world.

At that point, though, the world began to spin. She sank onto one knee, wrapping her arms around herself again. Someone was lifting her up; maybe Rafaela, maybe someone else who had called for help. The sudden drowsiness told her that someone must have given her a sedative or something. The next sequence of events were equally blurry. She vaguely recalled being jostled and moved, of lights flashing before her eyes, the sound of equipment crashing. Did she do that? She closed her eyes for what seemed like a moment.

The first sensation that hit her was a feeling of great exhaustion. She squinted at the brightly-lit room, which looked so plain that she knew she must be in some sort of infirmary. It took her several moments to realize that the feeling preventing her from movement wasn’t just tiredness; she was literally strapped to her bed. “What the ever loving f—” The Ring. Eyes wide in panic, she tried to manipulate the fingers of her right hand and was relieved to still feel the sapphire ring around her finger. If she lost that, there was no way she would be getting back to Kire and Amria, and she would lose her power over metal.

“Hey. Hello?” she called out, trying to move her head. It was cold in that room, and the straps were uncomfortable. Underneath those, she could also feel a cast around her torso, probably for her fractured or broken ribs. She noticed the rails around her hospital bed were crooked and remembered the weird jumble of images on the way here. She must have lost control of her power in her delirium, hence the straps. “Someone there?” she rasped, louder this time.

It was a fortunate moment Rafaela had decided to come by and see to Akira, seeing as she heard her voice the second she got to her door. She straightened her dress, as she pushed the door open, and went inside to see to the patient.

“No need to panic. We like the bed as it is, and while your remodelling of it certainly made it more interesting, then we need to keep it for future patients,” she said in a calm voice, as she entered the room properly, closing the door behind her.

She didn’t really know how much Akira could remember, but even if she could remember her from the battle field, then it would probably be pretty difficult to recognise her in that get-up. She was wearing a big yellow gown, which falls in sideways ruffles from her waist. She had tried to tame her hair a bit, but had only managed to get some soft braids into it, to make it look more civilised.

“Now,” she said in a soft voice, as she sat down on the uncomfortable wooden chair next to the bed, not taking her eyes off of Akira. “Do you remember who I am?” She asked, not wanting to pressure the poor girl, she had already been through so much, but she would have to figure out how much Akira knew, and would business she had here.

It had been quite the dramatic trip home for them though.
After Akira had seemed to go out cold, Rafaela had managed to get hold of the city guards, and gotten them to take Hortence to the infirmary; despite their many protests. She had taken it into her own hands to get Akira there as well, despite her own exhaustion.

The drama didn’t end there though. It turned out that Akira’s powers worked, even when she was sedated, and she had started thrashing around, bending every piece of metal around her, making it act crazy. The doctors had to leave, and they didn’t come back before she was fully knocked out.

Needless to say, Rafaela was not the most popular girl around, but she wasn’t that popular before either, so it’s not like she can be brought to care all that much; especially not if it turns out that Akira can help them with their demon problem, so she wouldn’t have to work together with Hortence ever again. Most of all though, she just really wanted to know why, and how, Akira had dumped through that portal, when she was very obviously non-demonic.

For now though, it was all about not stressing out Akira too much, so that she could concentrate on just answering the questions, without ****ing with more metal. Rafaela had had some time to study the girl, and she looked quite young, but she carried a ring like herself and Hortence did, and she seemed to know about what they did, so Rafaela could only assume that she was a paladin like them.

What struck her as odd was how freaked out Akira had seemed by the city. She didn’t know if it was just because the strange girl had never seen a big city, or if it was because she came from somewhere different, but she had every intention of finding out.

Right after she called out, Akira heard someone go through the door. She couldn’t exactly raise her head as much as she would like, but thankfully whoever her visitor was stepped closer to the bed and sat beside it. “Ha,” she rasped upon the woman’s comment, feebly moving her hands against the restraints. Restraints meant her power was still pretty much connected to contact and movement, so at least whatever thrashing about she did was limited to what was in the immediate vicinity. Craning her neck as far as she could, she furrowed her brow while observing her visitor.

It took a couple of moments, but the woman’s face finally registered on her. “Can’t exactly forget you, Miss Tallness, though you clean up rather nicely,” she remarked with a grin. “Thanks for saving my ass, Rafaela.” Her smile wavered as she sobered up again. “So. We’re in a safer place now. I still have a few questions. What kind of place is this? And are you really a Paladin? Only explanation for how you can swing that sword-thing and take down demons with one swipe.” She settled her head on her pillow again as she relived that chaotic fight that served as her introduction to this world.

“How’s that other woman, by the way? I just figured you two know each other. She a Paladin, too?” God, these straps were annoying. “Also, uh, could you loosen these straps? I won’t freak out again, I promise; I don’t even remember ‘remodeling’ this bed.”

The sudden stream of questions was no surprise, but Rafaela still felt a bit overwhelmed by them all. Instead of replying, she decided to just untie the girl, trusting that she would be able to control her powers, when conscious. She sat back in the chair, elegantly crossing her ankles under the yellow fabric, and folded her hands on her lap.

"Let's make a deal," she said in a soft voice, in stark contrast to how she had talked and behaved when Akira last saw her. She preferred this change, not really because she enjoyed throwing people off, but that was a part of it, but because she wanted people to be able to see the difference between when she was being a soldier, and when she was being a lady. "You ask me a question, and then I ask you one, because I do have a bunch of questions myself."

It's a peculiar situation, and she wanted to get wise on it. She disliked being in a situation, where she didn't know what was going on, so she always tried to gather as much information as possible. Probably a military thing. "To answer your last question, Hortence is going to be fine. Last time I checked on her, she was still unconscious, but the doctors expect her to make full recovery," she said in a diplomatic tone, or at least that was what she was aiming for. She didn't really want to drag Akira too much into the politics of this place, if it turned out that she was not supposed to know anything, so she would rather keep a low profile for now, and then maybe fill her in later if necessary. "Now tell me, what brought you here? And where did you come from?"

Hortence woke up with a splitting headache. She opening her eyes to the blinding light of the white hospital room, she tried to get up and realised her hands were tied down, "how rude.. treating me like a common criminal..." she looked around to make sure she was alone, checking the area for things she could use, and trying to figure out what, if any, of her equipment she still had on her.

The bastards... or perhaps ****ing, singular, was more accurate, had been quite maticulious in finding her hidden weapons and removing her gear, curiously she still had her ring though. Her hands were tied with a long piece of cloth which ran under the bed and connected to the other side, as well as anchored to the bottom of the bed. She had more freedom of movement than needed to move around, what to do though... wait.. these hospitals re suddenly pretty into the whole, cleanliness thing, this one just put in one of those remodelled steamcleaners to keep the knives and such available and sterile. If she could just...

Hortence bend her leg in such a way as to get her foot aligned with her right hand, then carefully removed the ring from the finger onto one of her toes, it didn't quite fit but whatever. then came the awkward part... She rolled with her confines, getting to lie on her stomach rather than her back, then stretched her leg with the ring towards the control panel for what she needed. It was, unsurprisingly out of reach of the patients bed, anything else would be irresponsible, and it also seemed to be locked, but no matter.
Hortence concentrated, looking intently at the square control panel and then closing her eyes, imagining it, picking it apart in her mind, looking in her minds eye at the schematics for the little machine which she knew in and out, and let the machine itself fill in the blanks for her. It was like it was talking to her, divulging it's secrets and showing the last details of it's customised design before it's mistress.

Hortence took a deep breath before finding the part of the machine which needed to loosen for the mechanism to do what she wanted, she didn't need the code, just the last part of the machine which was activated once the keys were in place, the steps to get there were redundant here.
She heard the sound of the machine turning on and steam escaped from the ceiling as a newly steambathed set of medical tools were lowered down to her, just within reach of her foot.
Hortence managed to pick up a scalpel with her toes and return it to her hand. She made short work of the cloth once she had it.

Hortence sat up, panting a bit, she realised how much she had actually strained her damaged body, her head hadn't been quite ripe for remote manipulation either.. and the world around her was swimming a bit... She took a few moments to gather herself, breathing deeply and stretching out in spite of her headache. after a few minutes she felt better, still not great, but good enough.

She examined the medical equipment, a few things that she could use.. but no pockets.. She went back to her bed to free the cloth from the bed which had been tying her down before. She tied it around her shoulder, creating a makeshift shoulderbag, she quickly started putting a few tools into it, she didn't know how much time she had, but rushing these things would only land her in trouble again.
She looked to the steambath itself, a large ovenlike contraption connected to the ceiling, it proudly displayed the tools it had cleaned upon being brought down for easy access. Once up in it's confines in the ceiling it washed the supplies with steam at around 200 degrees C, it was big, clunky and honestly redundant, but much of the tech that the rich make tend to be this way... They could have used the money they spend on these to build a small clinic closer to the people that actually needed it... But of course a bit of flare for the patients... a much better use for that money.
Hortence was thinking this as she absentmindedly took the machine apart, putting it back together in form of a make-shift steamcannon, might come in handy, but a bit heavier than she prefered. Still, a more dangerious weapon than a scalpel. She connected the cannon with her ring, making many of the heating implements redundant and allowing stealth even while carrying a glorified waterheater.
She began going through the hospital, there weren't that many people, it occured to Hortence that she had no idea what time it was, the place seemed utterly devoid of windows and natural lights, the only things lighting the many coridors being the glowstones so popular with those who could afford it. Their light was a brilliant, sickening white which aggresively robbed the surroundings of their natural color. They also made dirt much more appearent, which may be why they were a show of prestige, it had meant more work for many houseslaves to have the glowstones implemented to be sure... Their masters running around looking for a smidge of dirt...

Hortence went unheard and unseen through the hospital, growing progressively gloomier, the building reminded her of everything she despised about the upperclass...
Finally she found what she was looking for, a room which had a collection of lockers lining the walls. This was where Raffey had stashed her gear, she could feel it. There was a guy in there though... might be one of hers... might just be someone working for the hospital... regardless he was a problem.
Fortunatly he didn't seem that sharp, half heartedly looking around, just sitting on a bench, he was clearly meant to guard the room, but he was doing a poor job. It was easy for Hortence to crawl in behind him and place a scalpel to his throat.
"quiet, or I cut your throat.." Hortence whispered, sending a shock through the man, freezing him in place.
"good... now tell me where my stuff is and I won't kill you". The man whimpered and pointed towards one of the many lockers.
"very good" Hortence got up, putting away her scalpel and walking towards the locker.
"um wait..! halt I..GAGH!" the man was stopped short by a kick to the neck, sending him toppling to the floor unconcious "told you to be quiet" Hortence smirked to herself before opening the locker, didn't even have a trap on it or anything, how dissapointing.
Hortence felt a lot better once she donned her suit, it was still missing the chestpiece, but whatever. Now with her suit she was able to do a real field test of the cloaking device, she activated her ring into the glove and the whiring machine flared up for a few seconds before she started essentially turning invisible.
She looked herself over, quite happy with the result... though she found that the glowstones emitted enough light that her shadow became fairly obvious... it was a bit unfortunate, but it would have to do for now.
Hortence made her way towards the exit, passing by a room she happened to hear a familiar voice, she decided to postpone her escape to eavesdrop on Raffy, she was talking to that portalgirl, and Hortence was too curious to not take this chance to get to know a bit about her.

Not really expecting the woman to do much talking in spite her many questions, Akira was still nevertheless relieved that Rafaela opted to untie her. If their places had been switched, she would’ve been more hesitant to let someone with the power to bend and move metal with her mind have her way. “Oh, man, you just did me a solid,” she murmured in thanks, feebly opening and closing her hands to get her blood circulating. Still, when she tried sitting up properly, she found that she didn’t have the energy just yet. Maybe the sedatives hadn’t completely worn off yet.

Still, she forced her lethargic body into an upright position against the headboard as she listened to Rafaela make the deal. Seeing the woman in the delicate yellow dress and calm demeanor was the total opposite of the impression she had first made, and Aki found herself staring. She and Kire had been introduced the same way to each other, with one dropping in to rescue the other, but even when Kire wasn’t dressed in her warrior’s apparel, she had the sharpness and hardness of metal in her demeanor. But, either way, Akira knew that such shifts in personality—or non-shifting, in Kire’s case—were all deliberate choices. If Rafaela wanted to throw her off, she was, to some degree, successful.

“Seems fair,” Akira replied, this time staring at the hospital room. Just like what little glimpses of the city she had before passing out, it was a strange mix of an older sensibility and more modern technology. More familiar than medieval Amria, yet all the more foreign from Earth, too. She listened as Rafaela explained that the other woman—Hortence, apparently—was doing well. So, at least she knew that the two women were acquaintances. But what sort of acquaintances, Akira couldn’t tell yet. She couldn’t read any malice from the way Rafaela said it, but no love there, either. “That’s good to know,” she mumbled, before pondering on Rafaela’s questions.

To answer her, she raised her right hand so the woman could see the sapphire ring on her finger. “This little ****,” she said with a smirk. “I’m kinda new to the portal thing, so I’m not sure if I messed-up the summoning, or something from this side pulled me to it, or a combination of both. As for where I’m from…” Aki’s voice trailed off, wondering what—or how, exactly—to tell her. Sighing, she met the woman’s gaze, figuring that she didn’t have much on her side except the truth at the moment. “Technically, I came from a world called Earth. It has places like this, and technology like this, but, uh, not quite. Not as advanced, I suppose. I’m not so sure anymore, since it’s been four years since I had left that world. Where I had come from before today is a world called Amria. No tech, just magic here and there, and castles and ****.” Aki cringed. “Did anything I say even remotely make sense?”

The explanation was weird to Rafaela, but ultimately it made some resemblance of sense. She nodded softly, trying to wrap her head around the entire “other worlds” thing. Surely, she had known that the demons had to come from somewhere, but she had never really cared much about that, and only cared about getting them out of her world; or mostly she just cared about seeing them dead, which proved easier most of the time, at least for her. The ring was the only thing that made perfect sense to her though, because she had one herself, and she knew Hortence had one as well.

“Not much really, but I think that I can follow,” she replied in a calm voice, tilting her head a bit to the side, and just observing Akira. She wanted to ask more about Akira’s place of origin, but it was irrelevant for now, and not a conversation to have in the hospital wing. She lifted one of her own hands, the one carrying her own ring, and showed it to Akira. “And trust me, I know all about the ring,” she said with a crooked grin, before letting her hand fall into her lap again, neatly refolding with the other.

“Well, that definitely raises more questions, but it’s your turn to ask, if you have more questions,” she said in a calm voice, trying to quell her own curiosity. She could ask more questions later, for now she had made a deal with Akira, and she always held up her end of her deals; that was the honourable thing to do after all. “And from what I have learnt about you so far, you are going to have a lot more questions.”

From the expression on Rafaela’s face as she spoke, Akira could tell that she was baffled by what she had just told her. She would be, too; she imagined she had the exact same look on her face four years ago. But Rafaela didn’t let the expression linger for long; Aki noted how she slipped back into her collected demeanor quite easily. She nodded when Rafaela answered, then smirked when the woman showed her the ring on her finger. “I knew it,” Aki muttered, grinning back at her. “And Hortence, too, right? Had a feeling you two were like me.”

Recalling the demons, though, sobered Akira up again. She still had a ton of questions. “Oh, boy, do I ever,” she replied to Rafaela’s query about more questions. “We’ll be spending all day in here if we do that.” Slowly, she raised her other hand to rub her wrist where her bonds had been. “How long do I have to stay here? Not that I don’t appreciate it, but I guess it would depend upon who you want eavesdropping about Paladin talk. Are Paladins a common thing here, or do you have to hide it from people you know? I haven’t been Paladin long, but this is the first time I’ve met two in one place.”

At the thought of Hortence, though, Aki’s eyes darted to the door, her mouth parted in surprise. There was that familiar feeling again, when she first fell through the portal and emerged to find the two women battling demons. “Speaking of eavesdropping, uh, I could be wrong but I think your friend is outside,” she whispered; admittedly, she used the word ‘friend’ on purpose, to see if Rafaela would react to that.

That time around, Rafaela was more prepared for the sudden sleeve of questions; it did also help that they were all related to paladins. That would make it a lot easier for Rafaela to answer then. She cleared her throat, hands still neatly folded, and ankles crossed underneath the many layers of yellow silk. “Paladins are not really common, Hortence and I are the only ones here, but we are not secret either,” she said with a soft frown, because she really did not like that. If it was up to her, then she would keep the paladins a secret, so people would stop bothering her about it. Honestly, it should be getting old by now, but it apparently does not take very much to amuse nobles.

Honestly, she did not really mind people overhearing what they were talking about, because only very few people would even understand what they were talking about, and even fewer would care. Paladin was not really someone you respected in any way or shape, or at least not when they were not killing demons and keeping the city safe. Rafaela did not know how bad Hortence had it, but she had felt it on her own body, and it seemed like, if she could not amuse the nobles by being a guard to their stupid parties, then she should just stick to her role as captain, which they were not happy about either. It was infuriating, but Rafaela knew that there was nothing to be done.

At the mention of her friend, Rafaela looked over her shoulder, but saw nothing there. She frowned softly, because she had visited Hortence right before visiting Akira, so she knew that she was still safely bound to her bed, and should not be able to get out for a while. She also knew that no one would be stupid enough to accidentally let her go, because all of the guards here knew Hortence, some quite intimately, so that sounded highly unlikely. “Friend is perhaps a generous term,” she stated in a dry voice, as she looks back at Akira with a soft smile. “Also, she should not be able to get out. She was safely tied down last time I checked on her.”
