Scowling when he realized the blonde girl had stolen his weapon, Damon put up his hands, taking a step back toward the door. “Look, lady, don't you think things would be a lot easier for us if we teamed up? I would have killed that girl just now if that's what I wanted. Just give me back my gun, and we can have a rational discussion...”

“You think it wise to attack my charge, do you?” came a voice from behind Damon, and the room darkened until it became difficult to see. Damon froze, worried- he still didn't wish any harm on the women, but he wasn't sure if Ose would be of the same opinion. The demon had a flair for the dramatic, just like Damon, so there was a chance he was just playing with them. Having never been in a situation like this, however, Damon wasn't sure which was the case.

Ose advanced into the library, having taken on his usual intimidating form, a shadowed beast with a huge mouth and teeth. His human felt a nudge against his back as he passed by. This was kind of amusing to Damon, since it meant the moth-like demon had basically full-body tackled him, but it let him know that Ose was just having fun with the girls. Damon loosened a bit, deciding to play along. “Oh, you're in for it now...” he said, putting on a frown, though Eve and Mary weren't likely to be able to see it.

Aamu gave Azoth a look that could've been described as daggers, if her eyes worked that way.

Joe counted how many clouds there were so he and Salem could split the pot by half. He ****ing up once though, his eyes squinting, and he tried again. Once he got the right number, he siphoned his share of demonic clouds. He exhaled, giving his hand a quick waggle before looking at Solomon for some form of prompting. "Job?" he asked, his brows knitting together.

Aamu nodded from behind him, and then spoke up. "We discussed this earlier, remember?" When Joe shrugged, her eyes did a 360 in her mask and she spoke again. "The 'mayor'? Captured a few demons? Mary? Speaking of, I do hope she's doing well with Azoth's human." She made a judgmental noise and gave a quick look towards the hellhorse. She obviously thought that anyone who would be willing to put up with the fiery equine demon would not be a suited to spending time with a normal, defenseless human. And even if they weren't suited, they would be to haughty to admit it.

Joe made some sort of nod of recognition. "And... so, where would they be keeping the demons?" he asked, to which Aamu seemed to deflate and scuttle over to the end of the hallway, where there was a large door. It had been bolted previously, but having rid the room of the demonic armors, it seemed as though the lock had dispelled.

She piped up, "Through here, most likely." She turned to Solomon and Salem once they were done, and then shot another look at Azoth. "Shall we?"

---

Kazarn slithered around his human, watching her equip herself with her suitable weaponry. She had adorned her hands with fisticuffs and was experimentally throwing punches at the air. "Ruby," he said, his open mouth dripping sand as he spoke.

"What," she muttered, throwing another punch experimentally. She seemed satisfied.

When the demon didn't say anything else, she stopped beating up the room's air and looked at him. "They've broken the defenses? So soon? I haven't even warmed up yet." She stretched out her arm, flexing her fingers however she could while wearing fisticuffs.

She continued, "I don't even get what the big deal is, anyway. It's just a lizard without legs. I wouldn't risk anything for it." She motioned to the back of the large basement, where there was a large, pinkish energy barrier built into the back wall. The wall seemed to almost grow around it in a fleshy sort of way, and the red barrier pulsated with energy.

"We have been assigned to guard it, so they cannot take it," Kazarn reminded her, twirling around her until his giant mouth-head met her eyes. She nodded, and turned back towards the magic cage. She walked towards it, placed a hand on it, and then turned back towards the door.

Aamu's mention of Mary's well-being sent a sudden pang of worry through Salem's mind. They'd left her with a stranger, who was both armed and much more physically capable than Mary herself was. Neither of them were exactly social butterflies, either. Salem was hoping that the worst thing that had happened might have been a very long awkward silence, but given all those monsters that had swarmed the library earlier, he wasn't feeling too confident about that. Sure, Eve could probably hold her own, but without someone watching her back, could she keep Mary safe? Damn sibling instinct, making things worse.

Solomon, noticing Salem's worried expression, lightly patted his cheek with an open palm. "She'll be fine. The sooner we finish up here, the sooner we can go check on your sister. Keep your head steady." He attempted to reassure the human, and upon getting a nod as a response, he moved down Salem's arm. From there, he took his sword form again, preparing himself for whatever might be through the now-open door ahead of them.

Salem took hold of one of the door's large handles, nervous. They'd held their own well enough so far, but he was certain that their target would be better guarded. Hollows, animated armours, those were one thing. He anticipated much worse. After taking a deep breath, he pulled back and opened the door, stepping through into the next room.

He was quite surprised to see a human inside, accompanied by a large, insect-like demon. Immediately upon taking sight of Kazarn, Salem raised Solomon's blade defensively. It wasn't every day one stumbled upon a giant centipede, and on the occasions it happened, it was a scary as **** experience. Solomon, catching sight of the barrier, spoke up.

"He's in that bubble. I'm guessing these two are on the mayor's payroll," Solomon dryly remarked. "And if they're here, and our friend is back there, you know what that means?"

Salem, sidestepping a bit, took a wild guess. "We fight?"

Solomon made a noise of affirmation. "Now you're getting it. Let's get this done with."

-----

Mary, in all honesty, was about to agree with Damon. The less fighting between superhumans who could break her like a twig, the better. Things could've gone so well. Beautiful friendships could've been made. Hell, maybe a goddamn explanation would come out of it. But instead, another voice rang out, and everything went dark. Mary clenched her jaw and pushed her hair away from her eye when that happened, and immediately looked out the door.

Ose's illusory form was more than enough of an indication that **** was about to happen. And Mary, quite honestly, wanted no part of this. She lowered her arm, and instead of getting up to run, she rolled across the ground until she was at the table again. Once she felt sufficiently hidden, she then proceeded to slither backwards, moving as far away from the door as possible. She was sure Eve would understand. Hell, she could probably even take the thing.

Probably.

Eve scowled at Damon’s words, still clenching the gun. If Damon had wanted to be friends, he could have gone about it a better way. She couldn’t think of one right now, but it probably existed. However, before she could put her mind to work, the room darkened with Ose’s entrance. Eve stumbled back. This was a nightmare. Why was this happening now? She had gone months, even years without encountering other people in Limbo, and now she had suddenly been forced to deal with multiple ones in one stupid night.

“I’m just trying to protect…” She began in response to his question, then paused. Actually, come to think of it, where was Mary? She blinked and glanced around. Well, if she was out of the way, that was probably for the better. A fight seemed inevitable at this point. She continued on, albeit on a slightly different subject matter. “I simply want to be left alone, and he wasn’t leaving. If you would both go, we could be done with this whole business.”

-

Azoth made a lot of loud hmphing noises as everyone complained or had thoughtful conversations or just generally wasted a lot of time. If it was just Eve and himself, they would have been in and out by now. The building probably would not exist anymore, but it was an ugly, poorly designed building in any case. When the door was finally located, he huffed and followed the group into the room.

And of course another human was inside alongside a demon. Ridiculous. However, it had a quick and easy solution: a fight. “Finally,” Azoth said with relish, and prepared a blast of flame.

The illusory Ose tilted his massive head at Eve's attempt to defend her actions. “You attacked my human,” he asserted. “I can't let that go unpunished,” the demon continued, baring his teeth in a menacing grin. In the background, he noticed Mary retreating under the meager protection of her table. The almost bear-like beast slowly stepped closer to Eve, and as he did so, a low rumbling began. Moments later, a circle of fifteen or so hollows rose in a wide circle around her. “If you're looking for your friend, she's hiding under that table,” he said, gesturing lazily with a long, shadowed claw at Mary's hiding place. As if on cue, a small group of hollows broke away from the circle to advance, shambling slowly, towards the table, and the rest of the hollows drew closer to close the gap left.

Ose knew that what he was doing was risky- if this woman's demon happened to come back while he was terrorizing her, there would be no talking himself out of that situation, and a reasonably intelligent demon may be able to figure out the secret behind his abilities. But the potential for fun here was just too damn great for him to pass it up, and he could teach these humans a valuable lesson in the process, so he decided this little adventure was worth the risk.

Deciding to let Ose handle this himself, Damon stepped back a few paces until he was sure that Eve couldn't see him anymore- not that it was likely she was paying him any mind at this point. After all, she had much bigger problems to deal with at the moment, or at least so she thought. There, he waited, resolving himself to stop Ose if the demon decided to go too far.

Aamu bunched up behind the rest of the group. She caught sight of the giant centipede demon, and let out an audible sigh of discontent. Her human hands clenched together and she cracked her knuckles in preparation for the battle ahead.

"Wait," said Joe, confused. "Why fight? Maybe we can talk it through? The chick doesn't seem that unapproachable," he said with a half-smile, which was met with Aamu's unwavering, yellow stare. Joe's shoulders hunched in disappointment and he clutched the axe that he had pilfered off of the armor with more desperation than before.

The chick to which Joe was referring to looked at her opponents and turned to Kazarn quizzically. "Really?" she asked, slamming her fisticuffs together. Sand dribbled from her fingers. The centipede shrugged. She sighed.

"Since you couldn't take the horse last time, take the blond and the tiny thing. I'll deal with the others," Ruby decided. Kazarn regarded her for a moment, and then without too much hesitation, broke into breakneck scuttle towards Solomon and Salem.

The centipede reared up on its back legs, and lunged towards the two with its mouth agape, rows of teeth white between the grains of sand pouring from its mouth.

The sudden movement caused Joe and Aamu to shuffle to the side in synchronization, more towards Azoth.

Ruby tightened her fists, sand pouring from her palms. She moved her arms and swept up the sand beneath her, and glided up towards Azoth and the two others. In preparation of the blast of flame from the hellhorse, Ruby shot a large wall of sand towards them, honestly wondering if that would be enough to end the fight.

"Tiny thing?" Solomon angrily parroted. Sure, he was small, but this insult was grave and unacceptable. "Salem, crush this insect. His essence will be stronger than those pitiful hollows you've been fighting. Rip his soul out and take it for yourself." The gargoyle sounded quite upset, and was very intent on taking out Kazarn. The sooner the hostile demon was taken care of, the better.

Salem was a bit taken aback by his companion's suddenly darkened demeanor. "Holy ****," He began, about to continue on about how Solomon was kind of being a creep. That chance was taken away by Kazarn's sudden rush down. Instinctively, Salem swung Solomon at him, moving in an upward arc aimed for the bottom of the insect's head. No time was wasted in an attempted follow-up, a set of messy, unaimed side to side swipes that had a better chance of hitting the midsection than anywhere else.

The whole time, Solomon shifted himself around in ways that were meant to cause the most damage possible. During the uppercut slash, the tip of his tail-blade extended into a sickle-like shape, and during the wild flurry of strikes, he extended himself to make up for lost range. During the shifts, he returned to a partially fleshy state, making him vulnerable for those few moments he took to reshape himself.

-----

Mary stiffened up when her hiding place was mentioned. Damn, this 'stealth' thing was harder than she'd anticipated. Of course, she couldn't just be left alone, and a group of what looked like those undead outside were converging on her. "****. ****, ****, ****," Mary thought to herself, scooting back to the far end of the table as fast as she could manage. A series of wiggles and uncomfortable arching over table legs managed to get her away from it all, but also into plain view.

Hopping up to her feet, she watched Ose's illusory constructs carefully, backing away from the table. At this point, she was wishing she still had that axe that she'd planted into the earlier hollow's head, ineffective as it may have been. She'd rather have the illusion of protection than total exposure. At the very least, they were slow, so she planned to keep backing away from them to keep as far as possible. The library was a big place, and there was plenty of room for a game of cat-and-mouse.

Eve made a choked noise of surprise when the hollows rose up around her. She raised her weapons, ready to fight, only to be distracted by the hollows heading towards Mary. Of course. This whole endeavor was one big mistake. She swung at the hollows around her, clearing a path that she could block Mary off from them. She at least felt confident that she could hold off the hollows, but with the demon and human in the room....

But then, something felt off about the whole thing. Eve has never been a thinker in battle- it was an aspect both she and Azoth lacked but made up for in brute force- but something was bothering her. Brushing it off, she began considering strategy. Fire was probably bad unless she got desperate- she didn't care much about the library, but if it caught on fire it could hurt Mary and herself. She considered, briefly, surrendering and asking to talk it out, but at this point it seemed cowardly. Besides, she didn't even know what to say. She raised her pistols and began firing at the hollows, bullets landing squarely in the hollows' foreheads. She hoped she had enough bullets to hold them off.

-

At Joe's question, Azoth gave him a withering stare, which was most likely fairly intimidating when it came from a giant, two headed, flaming horse. Honestly, the idea of talking it out was ludicrous. He sincerely hoped Eve would never consider something so ridiculous. Even if they were his opponents, he agreed with the human woman and the demon.

Of course, Joe and Salem immediately moved towards him. He huffed and chose to ignore them. Their demons could take care of them. Instead, he focused on his challenged, Ruby. When he saw that she was preparing an attack of sand, he immediately lunged forward, planning to simply plow through it.

The sand, however, proved to be more durable than he thought. Knocked back, he staggered as he choked on sand. Azoth snorted out sand. Then, although it was less forceful than normal, he spurted flame at the ground around him. The sand would likely extinguish it easily, but he would at least be able to get his bearings and find an alternate mode of attack.

Ruby twisted on the sand beneath her, about to release another wave at Azoth. However, she got dangerously close to them, and in a reckless motion, Joe met her with the axe in a full downward swing. Ruby caught the weapon between her fisticuffs, the force sending a shiver up the pommel and into Joe's arms. He wrenched the axe from her and swung again, and received a swift kick in the gut. Joe fell back towards Aamu, and Ruby smiled.

"Going to have to do better than that," she said as she bashed her fisticuffs together again, generating more sand. Aamu bristled, her entire form shifting as though she was made of static energy. She lunged and Ruby countered with two blasts of sand, which zipped through Aamu as though the black demon was nothing but air. However, the sand blasts continued on their path towards Azoth and Joe. Aamu swept Ruby off her feet with her tail, leaving herself tangible, and with just enough of an opening for Ruby to punch her in her big face. Aamu reeled and her eyes moved around in her mask, which was switching colors at a dizzying pace. Ruby took the chance to run towards Azoth and with one big sand propelled jump, closed her fist and braced for impact.

---

Kazarn might have been thinking that maybe he shouldn't have taunted Solomon, but at the moment he was too busy figuring out how to avoid the gargoyle's blows. He twisted out of the way of the initial attack, but the quick movement left his underbelly exposed, which Solomon was able to tear through as though it were butter. Kazarn made a high pitched shrieking noise, and fired a jet of sand from its mouth at both Solomon and Salem. He counted his lucky stars that they were together so close, and he wondered if he could perhaps get two birds with one stone.

Black demon blood dripped from Kazarn's insectoid midsection, and he seemed to quiver in anger. He followed up with a large slash of his tail, the sharp point at the tip glistening in the light. He whipped it a few times at Salem, to see whether the boy could get out of the way in time. If he couldn't, he was sure his work he would be done very shortly.

Sand impacted Salem like a wall, and the spindly human was sent toppling. The sheer force of the grainy mass knocked the wind out of him, and he dropped Solomon's grip due to how hard he'd been struck. His feet skidded across the ground as he was forced back towards the room's corner, until he was knocked over completely and buried by the stony particles. Instinctively, he closed his eyes and covered his nose and mouth, turning away from the source of impact. The surprising strength behind each grain left their marks on his exposed skin, cutting him like thousands of miniscule blades.

When the jet finally stopped, he forced himself out of the pile and gasped for breath, shaking sand out of his hair and off his face. The few seconds of respite from the attack were shattered when Kazarn struck again, this time with the razorlike extension of his carapace. Salem's hands went up instinctively to try and block the attack, and action that rewarded him with a violent gash across both forearms. His sleeves were torn like paper, and blood streaked through the white cloth from the new wounds.

Across the room, Solomon returned to his neutral state, shaken up by the force of the jet and being dropped. With an almost catlike heave, he spewed a glob of sand out from his throat, blinking harshly to regain his composure. Screams of pain coming from Salem, as well as a searing pain that manifested in his own forearms, immediately drew his attention back to the fight.

Beady eyes locked onto Kazarn's wounded underbelly, the gargoyle crouched low to the ground, then leapt forward and took off into flight, aiming himself for the gaping wound he'd torn into him previously. A shrill hiss announced his arrival, and on impact, his claws hardened into a stony black texture and pierced into the centipede demon's shell. His teeth likewise began to tear at other exposed soft flesh, while his wings acted as blinders of sorts, smacking around the demon's head to distract him. His tail began to dig into the pre-existing wound, thrusting into the bloody crack like a stinger.

-----

Continuing to skirt around the illusory hollows, Mary avoided what she thought would be certain death while she searched for something to arm herself. Some thrown books caused the things to stumble about, and as one lifted its foot to step over the heavy tome she'd launched, she noticed something odd. The undead produced no shadow, even though lights were right above them. Something wasn't right, something she could not quite place. Widening her stance, he balled both fists as one approached closer. There was a hunch fueling her actions, one that could have easily gone very wrong.

She allowed it to come closer, until it was within arm's reach of her. A punch was thrown at the hollow's jaw, and it stumbled as she predicted. But she felt no impact, no evidence that she had actually hit something. Awaiting the beast to catch its balance, she stood up straight and took a deep breath, readying herself for either pain or a confirmation that her hunch was right as the hollow swung a clawed hand at her chest.

It passed right through her. An illusion. Part of her wanted to feel self-righteous about figuring it out, but the rest of her was absolutely furious. Mary began to walk forward, eyes locked on another decorative weapon rack in the library. She walked by- or rather, through- multiple hollows on her way over, and her hands roughly yanked a dull old axe off of the wall.

With it in hand, she then turned towards the man who had been producing these illusions. She caught sight of something on his back. A big bug, with an eye for a head. Probably another one of those goddamn demons. She rushed forward, bare feet smacking against the marble floor, and with a loud yell hefted the axe up and into the moth-beast's back. She heard a violent crack, so she pulled the weapon back and followed up with a hack to the side of the human's head. He went toppling, and one after the other, the shadow beast and the false hollows vanished.

Neither died, but both were clearly wounded. A mix of thick red and black dripped from the axe's bladeless head. She watched as the man scrambled away, grabbing the moth, and took off away from the library and out the gate. A sharp breath blew a lock of hair out of her face, and she huffed out a quiet curse as the metal bars fell shut.

"****ing."

Frankly, Azoth was not expecting the girl to try and punch him. It was an absurd notion- Azoth was large and heavy, and the idea of someone attempting to throw their weight against him was ridiculous. So when she launched herself at him, he didn't move, and instead took the punch straight into one of his heads, which immediately banged into his other head. He snorted loudly, immediately dizzy. Staggering back, he shook his heads, trying to regain his balance and focus. After a few minutes, he straightened his heads out and began looking for Ruby. Blood was trickling from his nostrils- it was more of a mark than he had expected to gain from the girl.

It took longer than he expected to locate her, but he roared and immediately charged towards her location, fire forming in his mouths as he ran. He didn't plan to lose this fight.

-

Eve slashed and hacked at the hollows continually, but every time she destroyed one, another one popped up to take its place. It was surreal. Something about the whole situation seemed wrong, but she couldn't think about that. She was too focused on fighting them.

However, just as she was about to land a blow, the hollow in front vanished without fanfare. Her blade swung hard into the ground and embedded itself into the wood flooring. She blinked, then tugged it out of the floor with a few good pulls. When she looked up, the man and his demon were making a hasty exit, leaving Mary behind.

"Did you do that?" Eve asked, a little startled. She hadn't really expected much from her. Maybe she would turn out to be more useful than Eve had first thought.

Kazarn screeched to high heavens when he felt Solomon’s teeth and claws at his midsection. He twisted and thrashed, trying to get the tiny demon off of him. He fell to the ground on his back, his body curling up around Solomon so that Kazarn’s mouth could be conveniently close to the gargoyle. Then, Kazarn let out a jet of sand from his mouth, with much more force than the one last exerted. He also tried to claw at Solomon with his tiny bug legs, hoping to get a stab in or two.

Ruby grabbed her middle and looked towards Kazarn, who was busy dealing with the gargoyle. She gritted her teeth. She had honestly expected Kazarn to be better at his job, considering this was the only job they had been assigned. But they couldn’t defend themselves from a few newbies and an angry horse. She flared her nostrils, a few sand particles flying through them.

Joe had recovered considerably, and was now running up towards Ruby with the axe. He swung, hitting Ruby with the blunt end. She made a grunting noise, and then saw Azoth charging at her. She made a small smile, which confused Joe, and then she grabbed Joe’s arm and gave him a sand-propelled kick into Azoth’s line of fire. Joe was laid flat out on the ground, nearly right under Azoth’s hooves. He pulled his jacket up to shield himself from the heat.

Aamu shook her head and looked around, her eyes finally stopping spinning. She bristles when she saw what exactly was going on with Ruby, Azoth, and Joe, and growled, “Azoth, stop!” She knew he wouldn’t be happy about taking orders from her, but at this time it seemed kind of necessary.

With that done, Ruby instead turned towards Kazarn, slowly walking towards the struggling demon. She didn’t acknowledge his struggle or suffering at all. Instead, she beckoned him with a hand and said, “Time to show them what we’re really made of.” She stuck her tongue out, the mark shining a bright red.

Solomon's weight was certainly not enough to keep him from being blown away by Kazarn's attack, and the minuscule demon went careening across the room away from him. Kazarn's claws made a few successful marks in his skin just before he was forced away, two deep dashes in his chest and midsection leaking inky black blood. When he finally landed on the ground nearby, he did so in a crumpled heap, rolling ungracefully across the hard floor. He remained still for a long while, and when attempting to push himself back onto his feet, fell forward again and smacked his face against the tiles. It had been a long, long time since he'd fought something stronger than a stray Hollow, and going at a much larger demon on his own was, in hindsight, not the best idea. Instead of try to walk again, he began to crawl, leaving a trail of black behind him as he dragged himself towards Salem, who was still partially trapped in the sand and bleeding.

While having a rough time, he by no means was giving up. Despite the pain of the wounds on his arms, and the massive amount of tiny cuts across his face and hands, he felt an odd exhilaration. With some extra force, he yanked a leg out of the sand and stumbled forward out of it, catching himself on his elbows and knees. Kazarn, at least temporarily, had been disabled. Ruby herself was also heading towards the demon, ignoring her surroundings just enough to give Salem a chance to quickly crawl past her, over to Solomon's side. Once there, he pushed himself over into a sitting position and hefted the tiny demon up, supporting his head with the crook of his elbow. "Hey, hey, c'mon, little guy." Salem whispered, using his other hand to pat at Solomon's bony face. "Wake up, we can do this. I didn't let you drag my ass back in here to lose to a bug."

While annoyed at the mention of his size, Solomon was impressed with the human's tenacity. A shrill hiss escaped him at first, and one of his hands took a tight hold on Salem's wrist. "No, you didn't," He responded, turning his head to observe their opponents. When he saw what was happening, his grip tightened. "If you think this is bad, then it's about to get worse. But I doubt we'll get a second chance if we run now." His wings flapped as he managed to get himself standing, though he remained supported by Salem. "They're fusing."

"What now?" Salem asked, worriedly looking past the pair of enemies and towards Joe. The very idea of the fight getting worse worried him greatly, and his best friend's well-being was one of the first things that came to mind. Damn it, this was a shitty situation they got themselves into.

"Their souls and bodies are going to merge into a single being. It's something that can only be achieved after a certain level of binding. Either they're better than I gave them credit for, or they're idiots." Solomon doubted another marked pair would attempt or even know of such an act unless they could pull it off. "We need to get this over with, quickly."

Clenching his jaw, Salem took a shaky step up, pulling Solomon with him and helping the gargoyle onto his shoulder. The wet heaviness of his ruined sleeves was getting to him, so he rolled them up to his elbows and rolled his neck, taking a long, but obviously nervous breath. "Okay, then let's hurry up and end it." He figured maybe, just maybe, if he was fast enough he could stop the fusion from even happening. The most logical course of action, clearly, was to run at Ruby and try to sucker punch her right in the face.

-----

Mary hefted the axe onto her shoulder, attempting to hold it there impressively. The weight of the blade made it roll over backwards, but she kept the stance regardless. At Eve's question, she gave a nod, answering with a very simple "Yeah." The less demons she had pulling tricks on her that night, the better. Casually, she walked back towards the table, letting the axe fall behind her as she neared it. It clanked and tumbled against the floor, and Mary herself climbed onto the tabletop and rested atop it, laying stock-straight with her face pressed downward against it.

She was done with whatever all this was, and more than ready to just fall asleep and pretend it never happened. While she liad there, she was completely silent, and intended to remain that way unless Eve tried to get more words out of her.

Azoth was fully prepared to go charging at Ruby without stopping, but surprisingly, Aamu's shouted warning gave him pause. He glanced down to see Joe flat on the ground and reared back in surprise, exhaling the flames in his throat on reflex. However, the flames went up and only grazed the ceiling, then dissipated, shedding hot cinders onto the ground below. Azoth wobbled as he attempted to step back, but he finally managed to land firmly on the ground with hooves safely away from Joe.

Without stopping to check if Joe was actually all right, Azoth moved closer to the others and listened to their brief conversation. He knew of fusing, but it was something he had never attempted with Eve- they had never needed to, and it always seemed unnecessarily risky. He wasn't even sure Eve knew of it. "Can we stop them?" Azoth asked, already ready to attack again.

But then before the question was answered, Salem charged.

For a moment, Azoth was too surprised to react- he hadn't taken the boy to be anywhere near that brave. Then he laughed. "Might as well join him, then!" He said, beginning to move forward to begin another attack.

"Oh," Eve said a little quietly, flinching as the axe nearly slipped from Mary's shoulder. "Er-" she reached out, attempting to correct the way Mary was holding the axe, when she let the axe fall behind her as she walked past Eve. She winced as it fell on the floor with a clank, and watched silently as Mary laid on the table. Eve stared in silent bewilderment. The table couldn't be comfortable, could it? It was hard and wooden. The girl could be getting splinters in her face right now.

"Um," she managed. "Good job." She crossed, uncrossed and recrossed her arms, uncertain what to do with herself now that they weren't in a combat situation. Weakly, Eve asked, "are you all right?" Of course, she had no idea what she would do if Mary wasn't all right, but she felt like she should ask. She really had done a poor job at this whole protection thing. To give herself something to do, she picked up the axe and leaned it against the table by the handle.

Joe sputtered, spitting out a few particles of sand from his mouth. He wiped his hand on his jacket sleeve, drawing away with a thick rope of saliva and blood sticking to his lips. He grimaced, but managed to stand up. He had really had it with Ruby and her stupid bug. He grabbed the axe firmly, and sent a small look of apology towards Azoth.

Aamu shot up behind him, materializing from the ground below their feet. Her mask flashed a bright red, and her eyes focused right on Ruby and Kazarn. “Okay, Joe. Going to need you to stop being useless for just a second.” It seemed like he was about to protest before Aamu dove under him and swept him off his feet onto her back. He clung to her shadowy fur, situating himself snugly on her neck as they charged.

Ruby had seen Salem coming; it wasn’t as if they were being very discreet about running at her headfirst. As his fist approached her, she attempted to sidestep, aided by a current of sand guiding her smoothly a few feet away from Salem, but not before he had grazed her cheek, causing her to spin and tumble onto the ground. She made a face that could only be described as one of pure rage. Her cheek was almost as bright red as the mark on her tongue. “Let’s see how you like it, Blondie,” Ruby sneered, making a fist. A near identical, albeit much larger fist, arose from the sand particles next to Ruby. She drew back her arm, and threw a punch, the current of sand following full force towards Salem.

Joe and Aamu, well, just Aamu, was running towards Kazarn at full speed, Joe precariously perched on her back. Kazarn wiggled around to try and face them, a jet of sand spitting from his mouth. Aamu faded out of existence just as Joe vaulted off of Aamu, the blast phasing harmlessly through her. Joe fell back onto Aamu with a thud and a big of a high pitched “ow”, and they were upon the centipede.

Aamu’s claws tore into Kazarn’s exoskeleton as she struggled to find a foothold. Joe clambered up his demon, swinging the axe at Kazarn’s back. However, the run of the mill axe didn’t do much to pierce Kazarn’s exoskeleton, and Joe was flung off rather suddenly. He landed on the ground with a roll and made a face. Aamu was also flung off, and dropped unceremoniously onto the floor, becoming intangible as she passed through Joe at the speed she was being flung at.

Ruby and Kazarn were together, and while Kazarn looked a little worse for wear, Ruby looked as though she was beaming. Kazarn dipped his head lower, so that Ruby could pet him gently on his spiky carapace. He began to circle her, and she put her arms to the side, still flexing her fingers inside her fisticuffs. The clicking of Kazarn’s legs on the marble was a bit unsettling as it quickened in pace, the whole of Kazarn’s long body surrounding her, rotating around her in a way that was almost hypnotic, slowly closing on her.

Sand rose from the ground beneath Ruby and Kazarn and began to join in the dance they were performing. Suddenly, all that was visible was a dust devil of sand and Kazarn’s thick gray carapace, a blur as it spun around. In a blink of an eye, the sand and the thick gray mound of Kazarn’s carapace was stock still, not even a grain moving out of place.

And then it exploded into a thousand tiny fragments, with sand spattering everywhere. Joe had to close his eyes to shield them from the detritus. And when he finally opened them, his mouth dropped, and an audible “****” could be heard throughout the room.

What stood before them looked like Ruby, if she was half centipede from the waist down. Her chest was covered in protective carapace, and her head was adorned with Kazarn’s crowning spikes. She also had two mouths, both large and lined with sharp teeth. As she looked down at herself, she flexed her hands, and then she laughed. The sound of two voices, both Kazarn’s and Ruby’s was clearly being released by the two mouths. The one on her forehead seemed to be emitting Kazarn’s raspy guffaw.

She slammed her fists together as she would with her fisticuffs, and held them outwards. From each wrist, a blade of carapace, thin and deadly, erupted. Black blood splurted from her arms at the protrusion, and she shook it off without even blinking. And then, she rushed for Azoth, one arm raised with the carapace glinting in what little light there was.

Salem raised his arms defensively, bracing himself on the ground as Ruby's channel of sand flew towards him. Crossing them ahead of himself, he then nudged his shoulder forward, prompting Solomon to rush forward and cling to his crossed arms. The small gargoyle's wings expanded, then hardened into their impenetrable stone form. Sand impacted the pair, and while they were shoved back, the harsh impact of the tiny razor grains was pushed away by the bowl-shaped arc that Solomon's wings took. By the time that the sand had washed over them entirely, they were too late to prevent the fusion of their enemies. Solomon changed shape once more, returning to his sword-like form he'd taken many a time now. The face on the pommel remained animated while the rest hardened, and Salem took the weapon up in a two-handed stance, adjusting his footing a little as he watched Ruby and Kazarn - or rather, their fused body - closely.

"Okay, that's pretty cool," Salem quietly admitted. "So, you think one day, we'll be able to do that?"

"Yes. Provided we survive. If we're dead, then not a chance." Solomon's answer was a bit snarky, but obvious enough.

Salem shrugged. "Good enough reason to survive." While the Ruby-Kazarn creature was distracted by Azoth, Salem ran forward up behind her, taking a deep breath as he got closer. He was still nervous as all hell about this, but he wasn't about to give up and let this weird bug-lady kill him. He took estimates as to where her most dangerous weapons would be; the tail, of course, was a real ****ing to deal with even before fusion. Those arm blades didn't look friendly either. But he also noticed something else that could be useful: while carapace covered her insectoid half, and parts of her torso and head, she had a lot of exposed skin. That might have been a weak point to exploit. As he neared, Salem readied his first attack, aiming to chop the tip of the demon's tail off. If nothing else, it could prove a distraction or get her to turn around. Following up, he swung Solomon's handle end forward. The demon's little head quickly solidified as a sharp, wing-shaped handguard strike was aimed at the other's gut, followed by an upward slash.

-----

Without moving her head, Mary answered, her voice coming from her long mess of hair. "Yeah," She answered at first, just repeating herself until a few seconds later she clarified a bit. "Just, waiting to wake up, ya know? From whatever weird-ass food poisoning induced fever dream all this bullshit is." Of course, it wasn't a dream, but none of this felt even slightly real. Demons, what looked like zombies, a strange library in another world? Haha, no. Hell no. This was bullshit, and she knew it. The hopes that maybe falling asleep again would make her awaken in the real world were hollow, unfortunately, but that wasn't going to stop her from trying. With her eyes shut, he wiggled a little until she was more comfortable, then put her arms forward and crossed them so she could rest her forehead on them. Eventually, she rolled over, still laying down, and then sat back up.

"This isn't working and I hate it." While she was basically screaming inside, her spoken words were an entirely flat deadpan. "This is bullshit. The whole building is bullshit. I swear to god if Joe fed us drugged food or whatever the **** then I'm doing to castrate him with a chainsaw." With tightly crossed arms and legs, she rocked back and forth, pouting hard and puffing out her cheeks. Damn it all, she just didn't want to be here at all.
