The last days of autumn were nearing. The city of Goldenburgh would soon be wrapped in the cold embrace of winter, and heavy white clouds approached from the horizon. In the early morning, the town's many business were opening their doors. Goldenburgh was a humbly-sized, but financially stable and trade-centered town. Named after the yellow tiles that covered its building's roofs, it was a common stop for many adventurers and merchant caravans. What business were not in buildings instead had stalls, either built into the park's grounds or set up by travelers.

Magnus was the first awake of his family. He left his house, dressed in a nice outfit consisting of a white shirt, black breeches, and a deep blue waistcoat. It was an attractive outfit for a merchant, both comfortable and classy. A freshly-forged sword was the day's most important sale, assuming the client that had ordered the weapon arrived on time. He carried it to the shop in a gorgeous sheath, carved from fine mahogany and stained black. The door was unlocked, and he entered the store. The sword, still in its sheath, was set upon a weapon rack behind the counter. When he was certain it was safely balanced, he began setting up the rest of the store.

Candle lanterns were lit with a small handful of matches, boxes were opened and positioned to show off their contents in an attractive and interesting way, and armour sets were polished to give them that extra little bit of shine that sometimes swayed a customer's decision to buy. The setup took him about half an hour. Once he was sure it was completed, he opened the window's shutters and flipped a wooden sign that hung in one. The store was now officially open for business.

He didn't expect immediate business this early, so he sat down in a high-legged wooden armchair behind the counter. A small wooden "sweet potato" model ocarina was pulled from his pocket, and the monotonous silence found itself broken by light musical notes. It was a decent enough time to get some practice in. If someone stopped by, he'd be up in a moment's notice to help them out, but until then he would enjoy the morning's slowness.

Outside, the city's gates were opened by a pair of guards. Clad in gold-tinted steel and red surcoats, they were simultaneously intimidating and pleasant to look at. When the portcullis was raised completely, they took positions on either side of the gate to stand and protect.

A small caravan of men clad in simple green cloaks approached the city in a horse-drawn carriage. There were six in total, and after a quick inventory check, they were allowed in. The leader of the small group was a proud-looking Alftar. They had gone unnoticed, but each of the men wore identical brass amulets beneath their clothing, each bearing the image of a tree.

As Sheo snored deep into the morning, Aishia had written a note and stuck it on her forehead. "Out for breakfast." Walking through the early morning streets of Goldenburgh, Aishia had spent the last few hours scouting around. She had some money from last night, playing in the Inn's tavern for bits of gold. It was a shame that she was paid more in drinks though; she detested alcohol, which may mostly have stemmed just from being with Sheo. She had enough money to maybe buy some components for potions though, or maybe even a spell tome. That was just wishful thinking though, as she was more interested in simply wondering than spending coin.

Aishia's mind had wondered tod tales from the tavern the night before, about mysterious cultist attacking people. Some even said they were in the city, readying for another attack. But since the sources came from drunkards who could spin their bottles better than stories, she took them with a grain of salt. However she did take note that there has been an eerie aura coming from the town, which she wasn't sure of the source. It wasn't the first time she had such feelings, as she knew it was linked to her Dark Miracles. Namely, the odd sensation of death. It wasn't always accurate, but when she feels it, she knows something has or will happen. And with talk of assassin cultist and her strange feeling, she felt like looking around just to kill time and slate her curiosity.

At least until she got distracted by the market stalls. The market sprang to life as the merchants opened up their wares, various trinkets and baubles catching her eyes. Crafts from all around the world, food and drinks made from various exotic ingredients, and other types of snake oil. Aishia was careful not to spend her coin freely. Sheo had that problem, and it was the reason why she had to take up so many mercenary jobs. If it she didn't spend money on drink, she spent it on useless accessories that Sheo would lose or break or give away. Aishia was certain that Sheo was a vagabond in the past life, since she seems to skilled at living on the edge of poverty. Aishia continued to browse the market's wears, taking "Samples" when the merchants weren't looking, and occasionally inquiring about their wares. Once Aishia got her fill of window shopping, she counted out her coin and wondered what she should buy. Nothing the in market stalls really reached out to her, so she decided to go and browse storefronts. She looked for magic shops, but also at general goods and smithies. You never know what you might find in them. Aishia herself contemplated on buying some armored gloves for herself. Something that would allow her finger sensitively while protecting the rest of her arms from things like briars or blades. However, in all her travels, she only found very few smithies that worked with Elven Glass. Everyone else used more mundane metals like iron or steel, which she found much too cumbersome. She was also looking for a scarf to cover her neck, and more importantly, her scar. She had forgotten how many stares it attracted when she was in the tavern, and she felt that some stories would be best left in secret.

Aishia eventually found a quaint little shop. Inside was a young Teryn man, dressed in the garbs of a merchant. Eye-catching, pleasant to look at, and spoke well of the quality of the goods. She noticed that the store sold more than merely weaponry, though from the lavishly designed sword that hung on the mantle behind the Teryn man, it was what they specialized in. Putting on her smile, she nodded at the merchant to show that she was aware of him, but went to look at their other wares. "I wonder if they have anything enchanted..."

“How do I look?” Calaerwen asked her unhappy companion, and spread her arms wide.

He opened one eye, pulling back three sets of eyelids to reveal the magnificent emerald orb, and lazily he examined her. In the last town they had passed on the way to Goldenburgh, the Alftar girl had bought a long hooded cloak made of a light cotton material. It fell to her ankles and the deep hood hid her face entirely when she had it pulled up, as it was now. Zephyr regarded her a moment longer before flicking his forked tongue with disdain.

“Like a cloak,” was his sullen pronouncement. The scaled eyelid slid shut with a soft click. He was unhappy because Cal was going to be venturing into the city by herself. She insisted that they not draw attention to themselves so that the green cloaked men would not discover the pair on their trail, and that meant that having a large forest drake following her around was not a good idea. Weeks upon weeks of following murders and bronze amulets had finally led them to this moment. Cal had just watched the party slip through the city gates, and triumph showed plainly on her face.

Zephyr huffed again, and curled his tail around him. In the protected knoll some distance from the city, he was unlikely to be discovered, but neither would he be likely to get there very fast if some trouble arose. He could already feel the worry building in his stomach, like a spoiled meal.

Cal looked at Zephyr from inside her hood with a feeling akin to guilt. She knew he wanted to come, but they were too close to risk it now. She sighed and carefully strapped her bow and quiver into their respective places in the saddle on his back. The cloak made trying to use them difficult and this was only to be a reconnoissance mission anyway. With a forced tone of cheerfulness, the mage said goodbye to her friend and teleported into the city walls.

Her stomach flipped as it always did after teleporting and Cal struggled not to heave her breakfast up in the secluded alleyway. Grimly she remembered why she usually avoided teleporting places, but at least it had been a small jump. As the city was waking up, the thoughts of thousands pressed in on the young woman, but Cal blocked them easily and strode into the street. At this time in the morning it was not crowded, but the green clocks were no where to be seen.

Cal frowned in frustration, absentmindedly humming along to an ocarina playing in the store beside her. Where could they have gone? She would have to locate them quickly for her task to be successful.

Goldenburgh, Avis decided, was a pleasant city. Most of her travels thus far had lain west of it, but her latest escort to a group of honorable merchants had brought her here. It was the last stop on their journey, Goldenburgh being their home town. She had been paid the former night and, exhausted, immediately gone to purchase a room and sleep. Today, though, she explored the town.

It was a vast improvement over some of the towns she had seen. There were guards regularly posted, but not so it was oppressive, the streets were clean, and the people were friendly. Avis beamed. This merchant town was full of people she could provide services for. Now she just needed to find one.

But first, she would have to see the sights. Noting that her chainmail was getting a little worse for wear, she went for the first reputable looking arms shop she could find. She glanced at a person standing outside as she passed. They were practically drowning in a long cloak- Avis couldn't distinguish any of their features. She shook it off and pushed open the door of the shop.

A bell dinged cheerfully as she entered. Avis looked around eagerly, taking in all the weapons. The only people in the shop besides her were a handsome young Teryn who seemed to work there and an Alftar woman browsing the items. There seemed to be more Alftars the farther east she went, Avis mused. She supposed it was only natural. She strode up to the counter, intending to inquire about armor repair, but was distracted by the beautifully decorated sheathed sword on a weapons rack. "Hey, nice sword," Avis said with a grin. "Got any rapiers like it?"

Sliding a hand across the front of her face to swipe away a fly which had flew a little to close for her liking, Anora found herself in an unusual spot considering. Sitting on a stack of crates down the road from the tavern where she had stayed, Anora was examining this city on the look out for an interesting story to listen in on or a good deal on something she needed. Around her all she could hear were merchants trying to explain why their goods were better than the shop next door and why they should pay extra money for it, or the odd conversation about how a night went wrong when someone drank one pint too many at one of the taverns. Those annoying fly s were jumping from people to people, stall to stall trying to find their next meal, and annoying her in the process. To her, this was as usual a day in the city as she had ever seen; those merchants were ripping off their customers, while those ill-tavern patrons were reciting a story she has heard ten times over while the flies were, well, the flies were flies.

But what was unusual was not the fact that she was sitting on a crate outside a merchants shop more so it was that she remained sitting in the middle of a cities market district and was not out the gate guarding another caravan or looking for work on one. But times were changing, Anora has heard stories about strange murders involving random people and a golden trinket. If ever there was a place for her to listen in on what people knew, this was the second best place in a town. The first best was in actuality was the tavern, in her limited experience alcohol has a funny way of allowing people to tell all sorts of strange tales. But it never got useful till later in the night, those who fancy the tavern would either be at home nursing their mind or on the street complaining about it and not there telling the information she wanted to hear. So here she sit, twirling three coins in her left hand waiting for information to present itself.

She would have craved information had it not been for the merchant who owned the crates returning to find this young woman sitting on one of his crates “Excuse me lass. Either ye buy sometin' or ye better get off me crate.” Arona stopped twirling the coins as she noticed a patient sound in his voice. She had been sitting out here all of ten minutes and she was getting no information on what was going on, begrudgingly she decided to play a game and see what he knew of those golden amulets. With a sigh, she turned her gaze towards her left to size up that who either wished for her to be gone or for her money. Her vision was greeted by the frail appearance of an elderly man in the twilight of his life. He appeared to be a couple inches shorter than her, while also having a slight hunch in his back. Reaching her hands up, she lowered her hood as she put on a fake smile as she spoke “I am sorry to bother, but I was told that maybe you might have some arrowheads here.

The man gruffed a bit as he walked over to a chair she had not noticed before and he sat down. He looked over and with a frown on his face he spoke “None t'day. Anythin' else ye need?” His tone was direct, her response followed suit “I'm in need of a new cloak, my current one is rather old.” She paused as she did a quick examination of his shop, both outside and what she could see inside. “But it appears you have not, would you be kind enough to point me to a shop that has some?” As she finished she positioned one of the coins on her finger and flicked it to the old man, it flew for a second before it bounced off his shirt and fell to his lap. He quickly looked down and with a friendly smile on his face he simply said “Magnus might, 'tis over there.” He said while point a short walk down the street, she thought she saw which one he refereed to. She gave the man a smile, deciding to ask if he knew anything about the amulets as she left she stood up. “Thank you. If you wouldn't mind just one more question, have you seen anyone wearing a gold amulet of sorts around here.” But as she finished the face of the man grew confused, so without a hesitation she waved goodbye and was on her way. Taking his advice she soon found herself outside what she thought was Magnus's shop. She took a quick glance inside noticing a couple customers and the owner she presumed was Magnus. With a sigh she found yet another crate to sit on, this time crossing bother her leg and her arms and began to wait once more, while she listened for any useful information from within or around.

With the arrival of customers, Magnus decided to put his practice on hold. He finished the short melody he was already playing, then returned the instrument to his pocket and stood up, standing behind the counter now. It was more professional, and he wanted to give his family's shop a good image. He answered the question of the first to enter, Aisha, while pointing out a section of the store that held a weapon rack on the wall, boxes of clothing on a shelf beneath it, and a few suits of armour. "Everything over there's got some enchantment, nothing you'd find at a specialist's place, but enough to give everything an extra kick," He explained. Since he didn't know much in the way of magic, Magnus tended to collaborate with the town's magic shop owner. He would forge the weapons, and the magician would enchant them. They usually split the haul pretty evenly, but the ones at the magician's store were stronger, if more expensive.

He would be ready to speak up again, and got the chance to only a few moments later with Avis' arrival. He returned her smile, both in reaction to the one she held and the compliment. "Thank you, and yes, we've got a few. Not many people around here like using them, so they've been up here a while." He turned and plucked a small collection of thrusting swords from the rack behind him. He began explaining the details of each sword, of which there were six. "The first three are steel, but this one," He pointed at the fourth, "Is made mostly of mithril. The basket is steel, so the hilt might be a little weighty." He then moved on to the fifth, which had a very reflective, almost crystalline blade. The handguard was made of an equally beautiful black metal "I made this during a visit to Eridis. Elven glass, with a bit of obsidite in the handle." He moved to the last one, finally, which was a flamboyant sword made of gold and red material. "And this one's...well, it's mostly for show. It's made of orichalcum and dragonstone." He lifted the sword, which weighed about ten pounds, and turned it over. The blade was not particularly sharp, and it was far too weighty to effectively thrust with, but it was still gorgeous to look at. "Dvergar don't really like light weapons, so when I tried to make one with the materials at one of their forges, this thing came out ."

While explaining, he noticed Anora seat herself on a box outside his shop. He wondered if there was something she needed, but since he was already involved with a potential customer, he would wait for her to come in or for the others to leave before he went outside to check. His attention, at the moment, was fully on Avis again. He put down the decorative rapier and straightened out the others. They were of uniform length and thickness, so any of the rapier sheaths he had in stock would fit them. Most were made of polished wood with a metal cap, and were attached to a leather strap that could connect to a belt for easy wearing.

Internally, Magnus thought about what a good start to a day this morning had been. Three people coming to a weapons shop at once, this early in the day? That hadn't happened for quite a while. And if the expected client showed up, then his family would earn enough to keep themselves well-fed for at least a few months. Things were looking good, and he felt good about it.

Claribel Cretwas woke up at the crack of dawn. She rose out of her bed and went into the kitchen to prepare herself and her father some food before leaving for work. She looked around, scanning all the ingredients she could use, "Eggs, butter, flour, milk, leavening, that makes..."

Bread.

Claribel groaned, "Can't I make something that isn't from a bakery for once?!" She didn't just hate her bakery job, she despised it, loathed it, and other words that pertain and mean the same thing. But it's the only job she can actually do, her thin build cannot make her a farmer, and it's too dangerous for her to be a merchant. She fired up the oven, mixed up the dough, and placed the dough into the oven. While the bread was baking, she went back to her room to put on her disguise, covered up everything she can, snipped out some frayed hairs that couldn't be covered by the wig no matter how hard she tried, all that stuff. Finally, she took her satchel and lantern and placed it somewhere near the front door.

The bread baked nicely, so Claribel took the bread out of the oven, and placed it on the table. At this point in time, Claribel would be almost late for her job, so she took her satchel, and ran out of the door. Her father would understand that she'd had to leave.

As though the shop keeper read Aishia mind, he directed her towards the enchanted items section of their store. Some weapons, clothing, armor. She didn't mind that they only had a small selection, no doubt it would have been more pricy if they were magical anyways. It was just for curiosity. Leaving the shopkeeper to tend to the other customers, Aishia looked at their enchanted items. Rather quickly she found something that she was looking for; leather gauntlets with the trace of magic flowing through them. Sturdy supple leather, thin enough that they didn't get in the way of dexterity but harden in just the right places to provide ample enough protection. Aishia detected what felt like elementalist magic flowing through them, but that's all she could tell. She might even be wrong, since Aishia wasn't really used to identifying magic objects like this. Figuring that the shopkeeper ought to know, she held onto them as she looked around.

A few other things caught her interest. One was a scarf she was looking for, Meerah embroidering using some sort of thick cotton. Not magical as far as Aishia could tell, but it certainly felt right to her. It was long enough that she could wear it in many ways, simply wrapped around her neck, tied into a bow, or even fashioned into a necktie. More importantly, she could use it to cover her scar without feeling like she just put herself into a noose, so she held onto it as well. Before she would go to the shopkeeper, there was one more thing that caught her eye.

On the other side of the shop was more weapons, most of them which Aishia ignored, but one stood out. She knew it as a crossbow; to the best of her knowledge, it's a weapon with concepts from Dvergar. A sort of ranged weapon similar to a bow, but uses smaller (And more economical) ammunition, and doesn't require much strength or skill to use. At least that's as far as her knowledge told her, as when she picked up the weapon, it was oddly heavier than expected. It weighed at least a good seven pounds and didn't seem loaded. It seemed to use some sort of rotating crank system to reload, and after some initial difficulty, she managed to get the momentum to pull the string back. Aishia braced it against her shoulder and took aim towards a bale of hay, and then pulled the trigger. It was unloaded, so nothing was shot, but even than she could feel a small kick as the bow and string snapped back into place. No doubt if it had been loaded, a bolt would have been buried deep into the hay bale. Still, she felt that it might be too unwieldy for her right now. She would consider it though... And hopefully, Sheo would try to make her one. Aishia didn't doubt that Sheo would have the skill to make one, maybe even improve on the design, but she didn't want to rely on her too much. Her pride wouldn't allow it.

After putting the weapon back on it's display, Aishia decided that she would ask the shopkeeper a question about the gauntlets, and than if she likes it she'll buy it with the scarf. However, while she was certain she could afford the scarf, the additional gauntlets might be over her current budget. She could try to haggle of course, but before she would try to think of words to stroke the shopkeeper's ego, she went up to him to ask him about the gauntlets . When it seemed like he had finished conversing with the other Teryn woman, Aishia quietly spoke out. "Excuse me, do you know what the enchantments on these gauntlets are?" Aishia presented the gauntlets for the shopkeeper to see.

Calaerwen now knew her attempt at a nondescript disguise was a failure. Just moments past yet another person had cast her a curious glance, this one a tough looking swordswoman. Nothing if not adaptable, Cal cast off the hood of her cloak and allowed it to fall behind her as she stepped into the middle of the now much more crowded streets. At least it provided a measure of relief. Under the warm midmorning sun, her hair had been starting to stick to the back of her neck and now she ran her fingers through the mass of red locks gratefully.

Hot, sticky, and more than a little frustrated, Cal let down the barriers around her mind to listen for thoughts about a group in green cloaks, with bronze amulets. She did not intrude on the sanctity of any minds; there was no need. These people practically shouted every thought or image, cluttering the air with their clumsy noise. A wave of homesickness hit the Altari girl as she thought of the secluded area in which she had trained with the Psionic monks. A peaceful place, filled with disciplined minds.

Jerking her back to the present, a confused thought about the amulets slipped through Cal’s mind. She latched onto it hurriedly. It was an old merchant, not far from where she now stood, who had just been abruptly questioned about them. She saw in an instant that he knew nothing on the subject, but accompanied with the thought was an imperfect image of the woman who had questioned him. Cal smiled slightly. She had a lead!

Seen through the old man’s eyes the woman was fuzzy, her features somewhat distorted, but Cal was fairly certain she would recognize her. And so, she turned her feet in the direction the merchant had seen the dark haired woman go, stopping here and there at shops along the way.

Though she did not have much coin, Cal wanted to get a little something for Zephyr in the city as a peace offering. The Alftar girl believed she had made the best decision in entering the city alone, as she had not seen any drakes in the city, but she did not want her friend to stay mad. The petulant beast had been known to sulk for days once he’d had his feelings hurt. Calaerwen felt a little guilty. Zephyr was probably worrying about her now.

Then, suddenly, a glimpse of green. Her heart hammering in her chest, Cal quickly paid the vendor for the sweetmeats she had been looking at, and slowly turned around. The disappointment was like a large, dense stone weighing down her stomach, as she realized that the cloak belonged to some weather-beaten archer. Then, recognition. She was the one from the old merchant’s memory. Follow or confront? Cal wondered, pretending to eye some small trinket on a nearby tinker’s cart.

At the sight of the varied weapons Magnus presented to her, Avis beamed. "Hey, not bad. Thanks!" She listened to the explanations he presented for each weapon carefully, then picked up each of them in turn, testing their balance. While she did this, the Alftar woman in the shop approached the counter to speak to Magnus, an odd assortment of items in her arms. Avis tuned out the conversation, eying the weapons.  The three steel ones were all a little differently balanced but all seemed well made. She liked the feel of the mithril blade, but the balance of the hilt and blade would take a while to get used to. The Elven glass was fascinating, although she had no idea how strong it was. Avis secretly wished she could buy them all, even the overly showy and virtually useless Dvergar rapier. She weighed the practicality of a new rapier versus minor repairs to her armor. They would really be mostly superficial repairs, but she liked to keep her equipment in good condition. She decided to wait until the Alftaran and the shopkeeper were done. As she waited, she absently twirled the glass blade.

Larteis was utterly lost.

He had entered Goldenburgh with the intent to find its sizable library and peruse its shelves. If he had to leave home, he figured he could at least find some other books- most of the books in the Ilutent royal library were philosophy, too old to touch, or covered some complicated subject Larteis had spent many an hour struggling to understand. However, this plan quickly fell through when he had no idea how to get anywhere. He had attempted to stop a few people to ask for directions, but the reactions he had gotten thus far had been unmitigated terror due to Bellant, disdain from a man who apparently frowned on learning or 'dedication', as he had called it, and a polite smile from someone who couldn't speak Alftaran or Teryn. Larteis had given up and was instead morosely trailing through the city, Bellant following.

"You didn't think this through at all, did you." Bellant, who had been moodily silent all morning, finally decided to speak his complaints. His voice sounded like crushed gravel.

"I thought it through a little," Larteis said weakly.

"Well, you got out of the palace," the drake said. "And out of Eridis. You even got to this town. But do you have any, I don't know, plans for the future? That money you took-"

"Borrowed?"

"Borrowed, then, won't last forever." Bellant sighed. "This was a bad idea. We should just go back. Say you got kidnapped but escaped cunningly or something. Your father will be angry, but he's always angry."

"Why would he be angry at me that I got kidnapped?" Larteis asked. Bellant raised an eyebrow. Larteis winced. "I'll… I'll figure something out. But can you not talk about it so much? We'll be found out and then it'll all be for nothing." He came to a halt. "Now, if I could just find the library…"

Someone tugged Larteis' sleeve. The Alftar nearly jumped a foot, and Bellant swung around to face whoever had laid a hand on him, but it was merely a mildly annoyed merchant. "Excuse me, sir. If you could move your…" He waved a hand at Bellant. "Dragon. It's blocking the shop door."

Bellant glared at him. "You could just asked," he said. With this, he turned dramatically, nearly knocking over several crates with his tail, and shouldered through the crowd. Larteis followed, apologizing profusely to people the drake had bumped into until the two found an avenue of traffic that was less crowded. He sighed. How was he ever going to get through this mess?

Anora's callused fingers kept playing with the coins in her hand while she sat, near motionless all things considering, on-top of this very merchant crate. If ever she was, she was bored at this time. It was not because the city itself bored her, with the predictable lousy information she had received about a new cloak or the people on the streets not mentioning a thing worth a damn about the golden trinket. Rather she found herself bored at the conversation being held within the blacksmith's shop. From the talk about the material used in the construction of some swords to what magic is used inside some gauntlet, this was the talk of the day. And it was not like she saw anything that peaked her interest in the area around the shop. She was caught between a metaphoric rock and hard place, on one hand she wanted to find more information about these golden amulets that had many people scared yet on the other she wanted to be out of the city in a place that would interest her. Twirling the coins just a little bit faster, she began to think about the place where she was raised. A picture of a lush forest sprung to mind, small animals running freely around without a care in the world and her adoptive father, the ranger. A look of sadness fell on her face as his face flashed in her mind once more. His rugged features, the disrepair of his attire but the look of compassion on his face was what was getting to her. He had taken her in, risked life and limb to protect her, and he died because she had not been there to return the favor. The sound of a coin bouncing off the ground broke her concentration.

Looking down, she quickly located the rebellious coin and was about to pick it up when she got the feeling that someone nearby was watching her. Her eyes darted up, towards the direction she felt the eyes came from and quickly located the source. Her vision was greeted by a thin, poorly dressed and washed girl who was setting up a small display outside the shop next door. This girl was not a couple years younger than Anora herself, and she was eyeing up the bow that lay on her back. Anora quickly assumed that she was not the owner, the display she set up appeared to be expensive yet she herself was in bad shape. Either she was the owners daughter, or in all likely hood she was a servant girl. Anora noticed that the display she was setting up were pieces of clothing, vests, boots and things of the sort. Maybe they would have cloaks, so as she grabbed the coin she decided to check it out. So standing up as gracefully as possible, keeping her eye on the girl who had resumed setting up the display and began to move in her direction. As she neared the young girl looked up at Anora and flashed a weak smile, she spoke in a soft yet clear tone “Sorry ma'am, we are not open yet.” Her eyes lingered on Anora's tattered cloak before resuming setting out some clothes on a table. Anora returned the smile as she went back to work, before responding in an equally soft yet gentle tone “I can see that, but I was wondering if you had any wool cloaks for sale when you open?” The girl quickly looked back up and responded in the same voice as before with “Yes ma'am.” Anora quickly responded back, tilting her head slightly to the side as she spoke “What's your name?” The girl looked back down at the display and finished placing another vest on the table, she grabbed a small box of various other clothes before looking back and responding “Gven.” She started to move back to the door, Anora eyes following suit as her heard went back to it's natural position before Anora called her name again. “Gven, can you bring me a cloak much like mine?” And as Gven was looking back from the door Anora flicked a coin to her, who nearly dropped the crate in order to catch it. Her eyes lit up slightly as she studied it before looking back with some joy in her eyes and said “Yes ma'am.

In the five minutes that followed the girl brought out a new cloak which Anora over-payed for but was now on her way back to the crate when she realized she still felt like someone was watching her. Looking down the road she noticed a couple stands and people browsing the wares but nothing that struck her as out of the ordinary. Quickly looking the other way, she noticed Gven was now helping another customer so that ruled her out. Deciding to move, she made her way towards an alleyway and started to walk down, with an ear out to listen for footsteps behind her.

When Claribel arrived at her bakery, she felt relieved that there was nobody was waiting at the door. She entered the door, grabbed her apron hanging from a hook, and hung her satchel in its place. She rushed to the kitchen and began to make a large batch of base dough so she can add more special ingredients if the customers want it. A couple minutes later, customers start rolling in, Claribel groaned at the sight, but she knew that she needed them to get out of the country and she is not giving up on the idea. She did serve her customers, of course, but most of the time she stood next to the counter like a statue, desperately trying to avoid conversation.

Sometime during the afternoon, a strange looking customer walked into the bakery. He wore a hooded cloak, fastened by a simple brass brooch, obscuring much of his body. He walked up to the counter with a large sack of coins, which left many customers either scared or bewildered, some even running away from the place. Claribel felt a sinking feeling about the situation, having been stressed enough about her regular customers, but now she has to deal with a suspicious one, the thought makes her heart pound in nervousness. The customer dropped his sack on the counter "I am not ordering anything, but, before I tell you of my business here, I would like to know what is your name."

Claribel stuttered, "C- D-D-Delen Ashbelm..."

The customer replies, "I see, well, I am tasked with finding this girl, I'm giving this whole sack of money if somebody can lead me in the direction of the girl."

Claribel visually inspected the sack, it appears to be filled to the brim with money, seemingly enough to make up that last amount of money needed to escape. She pondered for a moment, after all, the money could be counterfeit, but the coins seemed real to her so she decided to ask, "...Who's this girl you're...looking for? I-I...I think I might have...a chance of knowing who she might be...."

The customer simply replied "Claribel Cretwas. I am hired by Eliza Windham, if that can assist you."

Claribel, mouth agape with the fact that her aunt hired this man to track her down, immediately (almost to the point where it sounded suspicious) replied "I'll be...right back, I have customers to tend to and I...don't want their bread to be burnt...you know, people might...be starving...and then they have to...you know...wait and that's not really a good thing...is it? See you!"

And with that, she dashed off behind the counter to the kitchen.

"Ah, those ones. They've both got an enchantment that'll boost your mana production. Not enough to raise firestorms, but it'll give any spells you cast an extra kick," Magnus explained to Aishia. "You can try them out if you want, as long as you're careful. Last time someone gave them a shot, they knocked a wall out." He made a motion towards the right wall of the store. While it had been very well-repaired, the wood in the construction of one spot looked newer than the rest. The finish was the same, but a shade lighter. "We'd usually hide it with a rug or something, but someone bought it. Ah well. So, interested in those?"

He spoke confidently, in a tone of voice that made him pretty likeable. It was more a side-effect of living in Goldenburgh, but his accent did add a bit of extra niceness in every word he spoke. The serene and legitimate smile he had on his face helped even more. He was sure haggling would come next, so he gave her a quick assurance about currency. "We'll take just about any currency here, by the way. Trade route cities usually do, helps when people are coming from out of country." Eridis money was commonly seen in particular, due to Goldenburgh's relative short distance from the great forest.

As he spoke of trade, the door opened, and three cloaked figures strolled in. One was quite a bit taller and thinner than the others, but they were all dressed in similar outfits. Reinforced leather armour, green cloaks, and beneath the cloth, brass amulets. One of them, on the way inside the shop, thought to himself. "Take out the merchant and the mercenary, then find a place to law low until morning. Meet up with the others at the stables tomorrow. Shouldn't be too hard."

The taller of the three pulled his hood off rather dramatically, revealing a pompous-looking Alftar man. "Ah, excuse me, I'm the one who ordered that sword. Here," He said, walking up to the counter between Avis and Aishia. He took a glance at Avis, his already-existent smirk widening lightly, then focused on Magnus again. He produced a receipt from his travel bag, in the form of a small scroll.

Magnus took it and read, nodding lightly. Two signatures were on the bottom, the man's and Magnus' father's. "Right, here you go!" He turned and carefully took the sword he'd made from the weapon rack it was resting on, handing it to the Alftar. As payment, he nonchalantly tossed a bag of gold coins on the counter and drew the blade, examining it.

"My, this is quite the fine piece," He said, taking a step back. He twirled the blade around once, signaling the other two. They had been browsing the store's wares casually, as cover. Both of them drew daggers from beneath their cloaks. Magnus didn't notice, but if either of the others had been close enough, the sound of a blade being pulled from its sheath could be picked up.

"Interesting, interesting..." Aishia spoke absently, but as nice as they were she didn't think of buying them. She was fairly confident that her own mana production was good enough as it was, and even if it wasn't, it would come with a hefty price tag. Aishia may liked treating herself to something nice every so often, but she didn't have the money for something like this. She simply walked away to put the gauntlets back when a feeling of dread overcame her. It was worse than before; before it was just an eerie feeling. But now, the feeling was so intense, she couldn't describe it with words. The closest she could compare it to was when she and Sheo had camped outside a town one night, and they were nearly attacked by a gang of thugs. Had Aishia not awaken Sheo, they may have well been killed. A similar feeling swept over her now, but looking around, she did not immediately see the source.

Aishia felt scared. She wanted to know the source of this aura, but now that it seemed to powerful, she felt that she needed to put distance from it. After putting away the scarf and gauntlet, she was about to leave. But before she could, a trio of cloaked figures came into the door. "It's them...!" Her eyes turned wide as she watched the three figures walked towards the shopkeeper. Aishia's mind went into a mad frenzy trying to make sense of this feeling. "This feeling of death is coming from them, but why?! Are they killers? Will they die? Should I do something? But... But this is just a feeling. There's nothing I can do, isn't there?" Fear was taking over Aishia's mind, as well as uncertainty. There was just too many questions for her to come to an answer.

But these feelings were quickly quelled when she saw one of the hooded figures draw a knife. He had it hidden in his sleeve, and Aishia still was uncertain what she should do. She didn't know if she should attack or run. But there was one thing for certain: She was not going to become a victim, nor allow one to be made. Aishia removed her magic staff, disguised as an amulet. With utter silence she sneaked behind one cloaked figure, hiding her emotions as she prepared herself for a conflict. When faced with fear and filled with panic, without any idea of what to do, all she can do is appear calm.

Calaerwen could feel the uncomfortable tension of too many thoughts building behind her temples. Her head seemed to pound with every heart beat, like the two pernicious organs were conspiring to to this to her poor skull. Ducking into an alley way for a chance to close her eyes, Cal glanced into the crowd just as the dark haired girl turned around again. Did she have some bloody sixth sense? Cal had only been following her a few minutes, and had nearly been caught six times. The red head was not really liking Goldenburgh much at all.

Then, quite clearly, she caught a thought. ”Take out the merchant and the mercenary, then find a place to law low until morning. Meet up with the others at the stables tomorrow. Shouldn't be too hard."

In the accompanying picture, Cal saw two green-draped backs standing before the man, as well as a swords woman she recognized from earlier. These were undoubtably the men she had been hunting down. These were the murderers. Cal shuddered even as a hot anger filled her gut. This man’s thoughts were cold, completely devoid of feeling in a way she had never felt before. This man had indecently murdered innocent people with no contrition, no remorse; only cold hard and calculating logic. Suddenly, Cal decided she liked most humans, loud as they were, because most of them could feel so vividly. The Altari girl almost welcomed the cacophony as she threw herself into action.

Abandoning her pursuit, Cal sprinted for the door of the merchant’s shop where she knew the green cloaked men to be, muttering incantations under her breath that would allow her to manipulate the gravity around her if need be. After a day like today, she would only have one good pulse. Cal fervently hoped it would be enough.

The red head had just finished the longest of the spells when she collided with a young Alftar man. Cursing in a most unladylike way, she shouted “sorry” in the language of her homeland, and kept going. The door was in sight, and in seconds her spells had been cast.

Cal crowed triumphantly as she entered the shop with both of her long knives drawn. She plunged one of them into the heart of the nearest green cloaked man, the one who’s thoughts she had heard, and yelled, “Die, murderer!”

He did.

And then, chaos erupted.

Avis almost missed the drawing of the daggers. She blinked, then raised the swords that she held in her hands, even though they weren't hers. "Hey, what are you doing with-" she began.

And then an Alftar barged through the door, knives drawn. She screamed as she plunged the blade into one of them, howling, "die, murderer!"

This was all the signal Avis needed to start fighting. She raised her swords, lunging at one of the green-cloaked man. He swung his knife at her, but she deflected it easily. A few strikes and it had fallen out of his hand. She grinned. "Hope that's not all you got," she said. He roared and lunged at her, apparently going to simply grab her. Avis hadn't exactly been expecting this- she had assumed he had some other weapon he would then draw. She ducked to the side, but it wasn't enough for her not to be slammed straight through the glass window proudly displaying the shop wares. It shattered and she went sailing through to the street, landing painfully on the broken glass.

Larteis thought almost nothing of the girl who bumped into him, until she muttered an apology in Alftaran. For a moment, he was seized with longing for home. Then the more practical fear of being recognized overtook him. He turned anxiously after her, watching her go into a shop. Only moments after, there was a tremendous crash as a girl he'd never seen before went sailing out of the window. The girl struggled to her feet, holding twin rapiers in her hand, as a larger man lunged after her. Bellant roared, immediately sensing an opportunity for a fight, and lunged. "Bellant!" Larteis chased after him, but he was too slow to catch up- and even if he could do so, he was not sure his attempts to stop the drake would be successful.

Claribel was hyperventilating, what should she do? She'd lose either way, admit to who she is, and she gets taken away, with her dream of freedom with it, and perhaps something worse than that. If she lied and refused, she'd lose the money and therefore she has to stay hidden from her aunt. She looks at the bread that has been baking in the oven for some time, takes it out, and wraps it in a cloth. Should I? Or should I not? She musters up the courage to come to the counter. She placed her bread into the counter, the strange customer still there, of course, and after some awkward silence, finally said to him "...no...I don't know who she is..." Eyeing the sack of coins still there, almost tearing up at the fact she won't be having her dream of freedom soon, added "...but if I...got some...information about her...I'd tell you..." The customer sighed and taking the sack of coins, left the place, but not before muttering a simple "Alright." to Claribel.

More silence, that is, until a customer spoke up "I would like to take that bred you have there now." Claribel replied "Ah, yes...your order...you could take this now..." At least you can still give me money, a hundredth of what was in that sack that is.

It was almost dusk and it's time for Claribel to set for home. She replaced her apron with her satchel, and closed up the bakery. When she came home, she saw that strange customer again walking away from the door. She entered home, saw her father with a bottle and in shock, immediately asked him "What was going on here!?"

One of the men fell, his life taken by Cal's blade. As he fell, another turned to attack Avis, and the two of them went out the window. Magnus looked rather horrified at what was happening, but when he saw what the third of the cloaked men was doing, he reacted instinctively.

The Alftar headed for the counter, readying the sword that he'd specially ordered, and attacked Magnus. The first slash was aimed for his neck, but a quick backstep let him avoid a majority of the blade. The tip sliced his right cheek open, leaving a long wound across it. After wincing in pain, the blacksmith grabbed the nearest object he could: The unmounted head of a warhammer. He held it by the beak, raising it defensively.

His assailant laughed. "And what are you going to d-" His question was answered. The hammerhead sailed through the air and smashed into the elf's face, breaking his nose and knocking loose a few teeth. He recoiled, stumbling back, and clasped a hand over his now-bleeding orifices. A grunt of frustration and pain escaped him. He let go of his face and drew a small silver wand, his magical catalyst, and prepared to fire a gravity-warping psionic blast to crush Magnus into the ground.

As he did that, Magnus' own hand went to the wooden talisman worn around his neck. A white glow surrounded him momentarily, and when the Alftar's spell hit him, it was reflected back at him. The temporarily-broken physics of the shop were all directed towards him, and he was sent careening out the store's door, tearing it off its frame.

Before he followed the Alftar out, Magnus took a halberd from one of the store's many weapon racks. He was without armour, so he didn't want to use a sword or a mace. There wouldn't be enough range to rely on dodging. He was about to attack when he noticed yet another potential addition to the chaos rapidly approaching the store: a dragon.

"Oh, come on."

"That escalated quickly..." First thing that happened was the man she was about to attack was killed when a random girl just came in and stabbed him dead. Than another one threw another fighter out of the window, which was than followed by who might be the leader getting knocked out of the store by the shopkeeper's magic (Or anti-magic in this case). This left only the one hooded figure who had thrown the other girl out of the window, who seemed to be approaching the girl with the idea to finish her off. Aisha wasn't going to have any of that, however.

Extending her enchanted coin to baton length, she stood a good three yards behind the man as he climbed out of the window. She twirled her baton around to build momentum, and just as the man was about to get outside, she swung her weapon and made it extend fully, landing a savage blow that blew out his right knee. He fell out of the window and onto the broken glass outside, and even if he still had the energy to fight, he'd have to do it with a broken knee. Aisha doubt that he would fair well, but she was unsure if this man had any sort of healing magics or abilities that might undo the damage. So Aisha followed him out, borrowing one of the store's short swords. She would return it when the situation died down.

Quickly getting outside, there was only a precious amount of time before the hooded figure would be able to take his turn in either attacking, healing, or escaping. The first thing she did was go to the Teryn girl's aid and applying some of her Elementalist Magic to heal some of the girl's injuries. Her magic removed the glass shards in the Teryn girl's back and closed the wounds before they would begin to bleed, as well as salivate some of the pain and physical trauma that came from being thrown out of a window. It was a quick heal so Aisha didn't know how effective it was, but once she was done she turned to face the hooded figure who's knee she shattered. He propped himself up on the window's edge and seemed to be in no condition to fight, but still Aisha kept a good distance away from him. She brandished her sword and stood hidden from his vision, ready to strike should he make a move. "Surrender and be taken by the authorities of this fair city, or resist and subsequently die from your wounds and future injuries."

Her mind wide open, Cal felt the man’s soul escape his body, and she shivered uncontrollably. She had never before taken a life, not even during her time in the Alftar Army. The young woman looked down at the blood-stained dagger in her hand for a long moment, frozen in shock. A hundred feelings ran through her, culminating in one question; who or what am I? She shuddered again and locked her mind from the outside world.

A Psionic blast brought her abruptly back to the present. The leader of the group of green cloaks was thrown past her out the window, showering her with wood splinters as he knocked apart the door frame, and Cal looked up at the merchant in astonishment. Had he done that? She watched his hand fall from the pendant around his neck and realized that he must have just deflected the blow. Cal cursed. If the green cloak had been able to summon that large of a blast, he had no reason not to teleport when he saw things not going well for him, and Cal lacked the skill the masters called Following. She could not follow him through the scar his teleport left.

Cursing aloud in a long stream of Alftari, the red head searched the body of the man she had killed. Other than a few coins and weapons, he had nothing but the pendant to identify him, and no clues that pointed to their future plans. Cal cursed her own anger. Now not only would the leader most likely escape, they would also know they were being followed. Why had she not just watched the scene play out and continue following the green cloaks?

Then again, Cal knew herself, and she could not have allowed these innocent people to be attacked and possibly killed. It never did any good, wondering what would have been.

One of the green cloaks was dead at her feet, another with a broken knee and in the path of a charging dragon, and the leader being followed outside by the merchant man, possibly to disappear any moment. The fight was all but over, Cal realized, but no one who had participated would be safe afterwards. The green cloaks could return in force or the city’s officials would choose to blame them, the good guys. In every amulet murder case she had seen, the red head had noticed a distinct lack of involvement by the authorities—whether it was because the green cloaks were working with the law or because of the lack of evidence, Cal didn’t know. Like as not, the authorities would take just about any chance to pin the blame on someone.

She heard the Alftar girl who had been in the shop say ""Surrender and be taken by the authorities of this fair city, or resist and subsequently die from your wounds and future injuries," but Cal thought that was a thoroughly optimistic statement. The red head hurried outside where the others were, in various stages of fighting and recovering. “Get whatever you need together, and get ready to run,” she shouted. “No one who opposes these people stays safe for long!” After a second she opened her mind and mentally shouted to her dragon. “Zephyr!”

Zephyr had heard commotion and seen the scrambling of the ant-sized humans in the city from his knoll on a tall neighboring hill. He was now hovering anxiously, high in the sky above. Knowing his Alftar, she would have either started it or ran in the least sensible direction (towards the danger) as soon as it became known to her. He was thus thoroughly unsurprised when he heard her shout for him, and he nearly answered with a haughty ‘I told you so.’ But, instead, Zephyr decided to play the stoic hero and thought simply “I come.” The girl would hear him.
