Kieran ducked into a shadowed alley, sliding the five bucks she'd stolen into her sneaker. She scooted into a grimy alcove behind a once silver trashcan, smirking as she watched her victim run past the alleys opening. Just another days work she told herself, plopping down on the filthy cement, adding yet another smudge on her already tattered red cargos.
It was getting dark, and in this city that's when the real money came out. In Manhattan the night life was really the only life at all. At night the socialites came out, all drunken and desperate to just give their money away for nothing at all, none of them really cared if she took a little.So she waited, she waited for the sun to sink beneath the tops of the skyscrapers and finally to see it disappear altogether, going to bring day to another side of the world.
Once all light was gone, the bright white street lights came on, almost immediately drawing the attention of the areas resident moths. The street girl watched how they cast shadows on the slimy bricks, the overflowing dumpsters. Just waiting for the next sucker to stumble by, ready and willing to be relieved of their wallets.
