Here's another idea, make an alternative universe to this one, as in make a universe where the things that unfolded in our universe unfolded differently. As long as you can see where the split happened it would work. You could have sci-fi and magical universes in this at the same time, or a bit of both. I've always liked universes that were half and half.

I don't know if this has been suggested previously, but here is what I would LOVE to see in a contest:

Teamwork collaboration.

I can simply think of the many great writers in the site and wonder what it would be like if we had a contest where people should form teams of maybe two or three individuals to create something together for a contest. I can imagine what the results would be when powerful minds are combined to become one!

This might be reflected into what ''2.2zenith'' suggested here.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude. I have a suggestion. Two sentences stories? Like:

"The last man on earth sitting in his room. The ring bells."

Those aren't contests. We don't do member-based things of that nature.

The contests we do are prompts of different fashions. If you want some sort of recognition of that nature, we have medals you can get nominated for. Where we're not a world-based site, such doesn't make sense for us.

I quite like this!

Creating a 6 word story is a challenge to be sure, if you want it to really hit you in the guts.

Seeing as how they're so short, maybe allow members to submit twice instead of once? I'm really not sure if that would be a good idea, though.

Simulate a feeling. Make the reader feel it. It could be freezing to death, dying in a fire, falling through the ice into frigid waters, stuff like that. Idk. Maybe you're given a list of vague scenarios, and you pick one and then do your best to bring it to life.

Or maybe you'll just keep going as you've gone, and you'll learn nothing, and eventually, everything around you will become dust. To be honest, that's by far the likeliest of all outcomes.

We've done something similar, but that'd be interesting to do with another death. I'll keep it in mind.

I don't know if this is too big a thing to try and accomplish, or if it is just a ridiculous idea. Though I think a phase based contest would be kind of cool.
Example:
You would have an event such as a writing contest, and whoevers gets the most votes would be the main topic idea for the next phase. In this next phase, you could have it as a "art contest" and you would have to use the persons story whom won last time, and make a sketch or piece of art work that best expressed that whole story, (The best part is that it is whatever type of art you like, so it is very open to many forms of talent and skillsets).

Another good thing about this all, is that you can have medals for both phases (So someone could get a medal for the first phase, and someone else for the second), and if the same person wins both phases you can have a special medal expressing there double win.
---
Sorry if this is an idea you cannot use, but I just figured I should at least throw it out there. At the very least, it could make a good "Idea skeleton" to help think of a better contest then this one. =)

I could be down for this.

We did just have a society/culture-building one. It was up to those creating it what they wanted to base it off of, so they could have based it off of a religion of their creation. Maybe for a future one, I'll ask for that specifically, but that one did just happen a few months back.

Right now, the contests are happening bi-monthly because I can't keep up with them monthly on my own anymore and our participation in them slipped, so you're talking about having stories written, a month in between, and then using that story as the basis for art. I'd have to figure out what constraints they'd have to have and how to judge how it encompasses the entirety of the story, but the barebones is a pretty good concept.

I will say right now, though, there won't be a separate medal for that. Right now, we have twenty-eight medals that don't include how long you've been on the site, and such of that nature. We've got the one contest medal and that's enough, in my eyes. If, at another time, we figure there's a reason to add another, we'll revisit, but the medals are staying as they are for the time being.

That's something I've considered and is on the list, allowing for multiple entries, but they'd all be listed under the same "entry" as it were, with a limited amount of times they could enter.

how about a story that is written from an objective viewpoint? basically like a camera would describe something. So no feelings no emotions no assumptions, no smell no taste, no everything. Just objective viewing. A restriction could be the story has to end with a certain sentence like "S/he put her/his hand on the door handle and opened the door."

(thought of something difficult now didn't I XD)

Actually, we have done something like this. Believe we did it with...lemons.

But definitely something I could do again with a new object.

A story involving failure. For example, a hero goes out to slay a dragon and gets burnt to a crisp, or a person asks someone out and gets rejected. We still want to root for the main character, but their conflict doesn't end in a successful manner for them. I feel like it's an interesting way to write, because you know it's a good story when, at the end, you are upset for the character.
Or, a story where the writer has to string two random locations together in a coherent manner. For example, the story must begin in a dentist's office, and end in a Las Vegas casino.

I do like Cotton's ideas here. Hopefully, I am building on this when I say, "write the death of a character". I recall as children attempting to mimic a cliche death while roleplaying some game or simply playing guns with the neighborhood boys. That sort of cliche death is what I suggest.

We do deaths regularly, but the most popular time that such themes come out are when they're not asked for...like two-sentence story.

Maybe a setting/person/character but nothing bad happens, like the whole thing has to be focused on a beginning or something positive? I think that would be pretty fun to do I think?
