The festival came and went, the people of Akamu returned to normal though the spirits appeared to be higher for many. The times where changing and people felt a sense of excitement mixed with apprehension. Some of those who wielded magic were still about and that made the blind badger more on guard than usual, but still he tried to make the best of the time he had. Ever were the guards of the area watchful and attentive to him, for he and the other nine were as valuable as the royal family.

Axton loved to be about the people, his people. There was a measure of pride that came from his profession. When he crafted the blue ore into fearsome and efficient weapons and armor, he knew that what he did mattered. Even the smaller jobs, the trinkets and jewelry that he made for the royal family mattered. It was all part of a bigger picture, a picture that he helped to create due to his skill.

It did not hurt that the people knew of him and he heard their soft whispers as he went by. Many wondered just how it was that he was able to walk about without his sight? How he went from place to place and not bump or crash into anything? It was a mystery even to himself, if one were to take the time to ask him. There was no doubt that he knew he was changed. Sight that he had all his life was taken from him and replaced with something else. He could see, but it was not the same as the rest of the rule. What he could see was more of what he would call an Aura or an energy. The ore emitted it and so did the people. While he would never be able to see their true faces or know the color of their eyes. Still, he was blessed and chosen by the Gods themselves to aide his people and there was nothing he would rather do.

Now, it was time to enjoy his day and see what there was in store for him.

You'd think a festival celebrating peace, love, and harmony would allow a Healer a few days of leisure, wouldn't you?

Think again. With that many people milling around in even closer proximity than was normal, common sicknesses spread like wildfire. No, the days after the festival were the best of the whole year, Chiero thought wistfully as she pounded the herbs in the mortar into a fine mush. Very soon, the last of the morning wave of unfortunate victims would exit the shop after having gotten their various remedies, and she'd be able to step outside for a bit of fresh air.

Taking off her green-stained apron, she hung it on its usual peg as she left the back room to enter the storefront where her father smilingly had just exchanged a few silvers for a bottle of cold medicine with a fox. He'd always been good with customers, more so than Chiero, who tended to be too hurried. Matarchis waved goodbye to the vixen as she left. Chiero grinned at him as she passed. Few words were ever needed for them to express exactly what they meant to each other.

The sun was already baking on the ground when Chiero exited her clinic; solid rock smoothed by the paws of Esuri knows how many. Chiero stretched her arms above her head with a content sigh, and leant back against the outer wall, and, more importantly, into comfortable shadow. Situated just a few hundred feet away from the main gate into RyDauge, there was always lots to look at from the clinic. A couple of young bears tumbled around on the ground to the leg-breaking danger of everyone near them, a wily-looking weasel was trying to sell a beautiful bolt of cloth to an embarrassed rabbit, and a bit farther from them a group of harried armadillos, all carrying pickaxes, were making their way up the street and towards Rydauge. Chiero squinted her eyes, hardly believing them. It was one of the Suyeta, the legendary blacksmiths. Deep inside, she was girlishly thrilled to see a one. They hardly ever bothered going into the markets themselves, since the rulers were more than happy to provide them with the prized blue metal they worked with. But one was here now. His blindness made her almost certain that he was, indeed, a Suyeta. Admittedly, he was too far away for Chiero to see his eyes, but there was something about the way he walked - so carefully and yet so assured that he would never fall.

Though the blindness had been visited upon him later in life, his other senses had already been a bit more keen than average; likely due to the fact that badgers as a whole were poor sighted. The hustle and bustle of the market continued to refresh him, continued to make him feel more alive. There were so many people, so many interesting things to smell that he could hardly begin to decide what he wanted to do first.

Then the breeze shifted and an aroma he had not smelled before caught his attention. It was earthy and pungent in a good way that reminded him of a less civilized time. In a time when they were more savage, more primitive in the time when they may have walked on all fours and crawled through the earth. For some reason that comforted him, reminded him of home.

With his nose in the air, he followed the scent over to a building, a shop perhaps. There was nothing about it he could sense besides the fact that it was a building of some kind. This was farther into the market than he usually ventured and though he thought to ask one of the guards he knew to be tailing him, he opted for the more independent route and stuck with using his nose. The scent came from a person who was against the building so he guessed they might have more information.

“Excuse me?” he asked in a deep rich voice that seemed to rumble slightly. “What building is this?”

She had watched the badger intently, and flushed as he made his way towards her, sure that her gaze must have provoked some sort of supernatural sense in him. She quickly pushed herself away from the wall, standing as tall as she could - which wasn't very impressive at all. She only hoped her straight back would make this almost mythical being think twice about reprimanding her for staring.

“What building is this?”

Chiero heaved a sigh of relief, perhaps a little too loudly than was necessary. "Goodmorning, Suyeta. I am pleased to inform you that this is the westernmost clinic of the Cinder and Ash market. We are very near the gate to RyDauge, if you wish to know." She hesitated briefly, wondering if it would be too impolite to ask him inside for a cup of herbal tea. She had always been curious about the Suyeta blindness, and what better way to learn some more about it than by asking one of the afflicted? She was distracted from her thoughts when his guards caught up. One of them seemed familiar, and she gave him a wide grin and a sloppy salute. "'morning, boys," she said, switching to a less polite mode of speech. Truth be told, their rank as Boian were above hers as an Amanaki, but having rummaged around in the insides of one of them made her less inclined to follow that rule.

Such formality was still odd to the Badger, perhaps it had largely to do with his general laid back attitude about everything. He might have been one of the chosen ten, but to him that did not make him better or deserving of anything beyond the normal amount of respect and courtesy. The fact that the young female felt the need to act in such a way with him amused him a bit, especially given the more relaxed way that she greeted those assigned to his detail.

"I guessed I was close to the gate, from how well worn the earth was and from the way the sound bounced off of the walls," he remarked with a bit of humor in his voice while he shifted his weight from one foot to the other. "Oh, pardon me, where are my manners..." he said suddenly as he drew himself up to his full height and clapped his fist over his heart. "I am Axton, son of Alun Feodras Hassun," his introduction given with a slight bow in the traditional greeting amongst their people. "Do you work in this clinic?" he asked once he was back to his full height. The leather band of material about his eyes kept many from being unnerved by the pure white that made up his sightless eyes. Though he did not blame them for it, given how he himself as a child felt the same way when he saw one of the Suyeta in the mines one day while he visited his father.

There had been an aura about the man that both frightened and excited the young cub. It was on that day that he knew he wanted to not only be a blacksmith, but he wanted to be one of the chosen that worked the blue ore. Now, here he was, a Suyeta himself standing before a person who had felt the same level of excitement at his presence. It was such an odd and heavy feeling that it made him appreciate this moment a bit more. It was not often that he went out to socialize, so he planed to make the most of this moment while it lasted.

"Chiero, daughter of Matarchis Palian Arjan, at your service," she replied, mimicking the gesture. "And yes, I do work here. This clinic is mine." She felt a rush of pride as she said it, pushing up her trademark headband with a thumb before she remembered that Axton had had no idea she was wearing one. She hesitated briefly before continuing.

"I trust that you are having a pleasant day? Mind you, if I were blind, I would not dare to walk here at this time. I might break a leg or be robbed blind." Truth be told, it was becoming less busy closer to noon as the heat became too unpleasant for most of the inhabitants of the mountain kingdom, and some were already seeking out shadowed tables beneath awnings or inside more or less dodgy taverns. The small skunk wrung her hands nervously.

"If you are not otherwise occupied, it would be an honor to share a cup of something with you up top. Your escort is of course welcome inside as well." Chiero said all this rapidly, afraid of losing her courage.

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Chiero and an honor as well. I am sure that those who are charged with the safety of our beloved kingdom owe a lot more to you than they do to me,” he inclined his head to her once more in a small bow and gesture of respect. As she remarked about being blind he merely smiled and gave a slight shrug.

“Being blind is…interesting, I guess would be the word. I would be honored to join you for refreshment and if you wanted I would not mind speaking more about my blindness and perhaps you would tell me more about the work that you do?”

A look over his shoulder at the guards he waved them off, “You guys go and get something to drink and eat. Don’t need you lot lumbering about in her clinic and breaking anything. Bad enough I have to listen to you all while you stomp about behind me, in a very sad effort to not be noticed.”

The guards shared a look with one another and then nodded before all but one went down to one of the small taverns for their own refreshment. The last guard took up post outside the clinic, in the shaded part of the building. While they knew that Axton could handle themselves, they also knew what would happen to them should something befall him. This way he would get the space he seemed to crave and they would not have to watch out for their balls next time they spoke to Arnia.

“If you would not mind,” he held out his arm for Chiero to take. “I don’t do well inside in unfamiliar places…” the walking stick he had in his possession was tucked up under his arm out of the way.

Carefully wrapping one of her own arms around the badger's, Chiero walked slowly through the clinic. They went past the first door, which led into the small, currently empty infirmary. They went past the second door, which led into an even smaller laboratory. Right before the steps that led upwards to the residential area was the counter where her father still was, now done with sorting out coins and now instead whittling, sat upon a stool behind the counter. Chiero came to a halt, gently, so as to not startle Axton.

The older, greying skunk was nodding his head, the knife loose in his hand. Chiero coughed loudly, evidently startling him as the blade immediately flew out of his hand and dug itself into the floor. "Father, we have a Suyeta in the house," she said, trying not to sound smug. He was getting older, yes, but that was no excuse to sleep on the job. Besides, a Suyeta. You had to be awake when those things happened. She turned her head towards Axton. "I apologize, he is just waking up from his morning nap. Aren't you, father?" She added, addressing the other male, who was standing up, an almost childlike wonder in his eyes.

"I was checking my eyelids for leaks, impertinent child. Matarchis, son of Kleftis Palian Olek. It is a great honor to have you in our home," the skunk said with a polite bow towards the badger. "Pray excuse my daughter for parading you around like this. She does not always remember her upbringing. Which was impeccable." Chiero rolled her eyes at her father, who leant on the counter with a satisfied grin. "We were on our way upstairs to drink a cup of tea, actually. Axton was kind enough to agree to answer some of my questions," she told Matarchis. "Feel like joining?" The old skunk coughed into his hand. "Many, many questions, I am sure. And no, I think I'll stay down here and keep an eye or two on the people who might stroll in. Can't have them help themselves to your crafts. They might get sick." Matarchis winked at his daughter and laid a hand on Axton's shoulder. "Don't let her badger you, eh?" He laughed, deteriorating into another series of coughs.

The contact on his arm felt nice, it was not often that he got to be in such close contact with anyone that was not a member of the royal family. It was ironic how the very thing he loved most in the world, also sentenced him to a lifetime of imprisonment and seclusion. That was likely part of his reasoning to even venture out on this day. To see the world, feel the people and be among them rather than just their loyal servant. Day in and day out he toiled at the forge, worked the metal for the weapons and armor that was used to protect the people. For it he was granted status and a life that many would have likely wanted, but the price for such a life was heavier than many would think.

So, a small smile came to his lips and his hand moved to lay atop her own, a gentle and friendly gesture while she lead him into her shop.

First he noticed the rich scent that filled the air, it smelled much like his guide, but stronger more prominent. As they journeyed through the building his keen sense of smell picked up on the various odors. The overall scent of medical herbs and concoctions with a the distinct hint of blood. The trials and tribulations of a clinic in these lands. They were nearly as busy healing the wounded in a time of peace as they would be in a time of war. Such was the life of those who called these mountains home. It was rough and harsh at times, but it made them strong and for all of the pain that was there the people were happy. Happy and filled with a brotherhood that many would envy. All would give their lives for one another, because all were raised together and it was together that they were strong.

The earthen ground beneath their feet shifted and changed, to something smoother and more refined. He could also hear the regulated breathing of another being and was promptly introduced to her father. "Your daughter has been nothing but kind and courteous to me. You have a very fine daughter here indeed," he replied with a returned bow. The quip at her badgering him made Axton chuckle, "That would be such a shame, would it not?"

At the fit of coughs Axton frowned, "Are you sure you are well enough to be tending to others? Perhaps I should go so that your daughter can see to you?"

"I'm afraid she tried to do something already, Suyeta," the old skunk said with a dismissive wave, before he remembered Axton couldn't know. "It's been like this for years. Nothing I wont survive. Besides, I don't tend; never had the hands for that. I just make sure some poor soul doesn't run off with anything that might poison them." Indeed, some of the colorful vials - all labeled with a nearly unintelligible handwriting - contained mixtures that were either poisonous in incorrect dosages, or had been randomly placed by the skunks as a near-fatal means of security. In any case, it worked - after the first few times someone had stolen something and gotten absolutely nothing positive out of it, word spread, and vials very seldom went missing now.

Despite of his carefree words, Chiero shot her father a worried look none the less. She had tried everything she knew, but had been unable to determine and eradicate whatever it was that caused his coughing. It was likely age, but it still gnawed at her. "I'll bring you a cup," she said, and gently touched her forehead to his before giving Axton a light tug on the arm, guiding him between the low shelves. "Stairs," she said as they reached them, squeezing his hand gently as another means of warning. The steps, smoothed by wear and tear, led to a light room with a round table, two chairs, and a fireplace in one corner, where the embers where still glowing hotly from that morning. Chiero led Axton towards one of the chairs, freeing herself and placing his hand on the back of it. "Mind the table in front of you, please," she told him as she went to stir the flames to life once more. With the kettle, newly filled from the water cask, hung to boil above the fire, she went to dig out clay cups from the cupboard in the corner opposite the fireplace. "Please do not worry about my father," she said, rummaging around. "It's just coughs. Nothing worse. I hope." The dried leaves in the cups smelled strongly of lavender as she poured the hot water over them. She placed one in front of the smith, and quickly went down with another to her father. Returning upstairs, she sat down perhaps a bit more aggressively than was necessary. "I am sorry," she sighed, resting her forehead against her palm.

There was a sadness to the words of the elder skunk that tugged at the heart strings of the sometimes bitter badger. Here was the usual exchange between parent and child, former tries to assure the latter though both knew the truth. It made him miss his own father and he made a mental note to try and swing by to visit him today after his visit with Chiero.

"It was an honor meet you Matarchis, son of Kleftis Palian Olek," he bowed his head to the other male and allowed Chiero to take him to where they would have their tea. Already he could appreciate the way she treated him, not like he was just some blind fool in need of constant guidance. No, instead there was just the simple queues about the stairs and the same given for the chair and table they were to be sat at. Refreshing to say the very least.

The old wood of the chair creaked when given the task to hold the unfamiliar girth of the heavier badger. At the comments about her father Axton, only smiled and gave a slight shrug. "I cannot help but worry, he seems like a fine individual and has raised himself a very upstanding daughter. Besides, we are of Akamu and we are all family, right? We worry about one another and provide for one another. That is how and why we are such a force to be reckoned with," his deep voice spoke out with pride, while his nose tickled at the aroma from the tea that was brewed. Though the cup was placed before him, Axton waited for her to return before he even thought about sampling the tea, which was put further on hold when she returned and sat down in such a state. There was no hesitation in his actions, as he reached over to rest his hand atop her own.

"Please, do not apologize. I just wish there was more that I could do for you, besides offering some kind words and maybe a hug?"

Chiero willed herself not to cry over his kind words. She couldn't allow herself to collapse over so little. We are of Akamu and we are all family. Axton was right, of course. In the mountains, you cared for one another without question or hesitation. That was partly why she had wanted to become a healer instead of continuing the mandatory combat training. Sure, the warriors kept them safe, but it that also involved a lot of taking risks she didn't really care for.

She blew on her scalding tea and took a tentative sip of it. "I thank you, Suyeta. But there is nothing to do. I mean no disrespect, but I hardly think there is anything you could do to help my father get younger, or help me improve as an Amanaki." She dipped her head in an automatic display of gratitude, her black fringe spilling over her headband. "I appreciate your kind words greatly." His warm, heavy hand enveloping hers was very reassuring.

The skunk smiled thinly at the badger and took another sip of the lavender tea. He behaved so naturally, it was still difficult for her to remember he lived in complete darkness. It was good he was wearing the leather strips around his eyes, or she would have had even more trouble. "If you don't mind, how do you navigate? Do you feel your way forward? Can you see - sorry, sense shapes?" She spoke more eagerly as she regained her courage and dispelled her grim thoughts. Considering how badgers used to live underground and dug their own burrows a long, long time ago, she wouldn't be too surprised if that was indeed the case.

She was strong and brave, as were all of the Akamu and it made him proud to know that his Kingdom, his family held such amazing people. When he heard her pay attention to her own tea, he was reminded to do the same with his own. Tentatively, he explored the table until the back of his hand touched his cup. With care he wrapped his large hands about the glass and lifted it as gingerly as possible to his lips, for first a cooling blow followed by a small sip. It was good, which did not surprise him as it had already smelled rich, fragrant and flavorful, so he knew that it would taste good. One of the benefits that came from his other senses enhancing due to his lack of sight.

Which, ironic enough, was the topic she decided to discuss, "No, I don't mind." He stated as he set his cup down and gave her his full attention, "The tea is delicious," he said as if as an afterthought. "Hmm, though to explain this may be a bit tricky. See, I can't really see anything anymore. I can't see this table, chair or anything else like that. I know they are there when people take me to them and I can feel them. After that I just commit them to memory and I am good to go," he answered with a smile. "When I am outside and walking by myself, I use my walking stick to alert me to objects in my way and help me get around, or the occasional guard that I allow to assist me," he shrugged.

"When it comes to people though, I can...kind of see them..." he could almost feel her confusion so he pressed on in explanation. "What I see is your aura or your soul. It is stronger when someone has some of our blue ore on them, like the guards I can see them clear as day. When it comes to other people, like you I can just make out your face, though I can sadly never tell you what color your eyes are. However, I can tell you that your face lights up when you smile," he himself smiled at that comment. "Something to do with where the aura goes when you are happy I suppose," he gave another shrug.

Chiero watched as Axton's hand crept over the table like a large spider, finally locating and lifting his clay cup with an exquisite care you wouldn't have found in one with their sight still intact. Strange, how someone with no visible eyes could look so intensely at others. Chiero leaned forward, highly intrigued, and had to bite her tongue to not interrupt him. Aura was a real thing? And he could see it? How far away could he see it? Could he also tell how healthy a person was or wasn't just from their aura? A toothy grin spread across her face as he mentioned that smiling made the aura brighter. She was almost certain that she lit up like dragon's fire in his mind.

"So, you can only see living things?" She pressed on. How incredible would it not have been to have been able to ask these questions earlier! Next to nothing was known to the average Akamu inhabitant about the Suyeta, and she could hardly believe the wasted potential to study them. She knew that some of their ancestors had had notoriously bad sight, too - maybe the visible aura was actually nothing more than a long forgotten instinct, even thought it could hardly explain why the blue ore was so bright. The skunk immediately flushed about having thought of Axton as nothing more than an object to study, however briefly it had been.

A hoarse shout from downstairs tore her out of her speculations, and she immediately stood up, tea all but forgotten. "My apologies, Suyeta, but duty calls," she said absentmindedly, her hand sliding away from underneath his as she left the table and made her way towards the stairs. She hesitated then, one hand on the rough, wooden banister. Wouldn't this be a perfect opportunity to test the theory? After all, he only had to look. She turned halfway back towards Axton. "Say, Suyeta..." She began, unsure of how to ask him to help her without seeming impolite - he was her guest, after all. "...might I ask you to accompany me back downstairs for a moment to look at the unfortunate soul? I mean, look at their aura," she added, stumbling a bit over the words.

“Yes and no,” he said with a small smile. “I can see the aura’s of those that are living and I can see the aura of our beloved ore. Otherwise, the world is blackness to me. I do remember, fondly the colors, the shapes and everything else that came with my sight, but I don’t regret going through the rite to become who I am today.”

Another sip of tea was taken and he knew they were to be interrupted before the call went out for her to come downstairs. When one’s senses were so finally tuned, he heard the person enter and subsequently be seated before her father called up for her assistance. He was well prepared to allow her to leave and do as she must, content to sit there quietly and wait for her return. However, he was somewhat caught off guard by her request for him to join her and not in a bad way. It was just not expected for people to have him tag along with them. Even with his rank being what it was, some people were off put by his gaze and tend to avoid prolonged contact with him if at all possible.

The cup was set down and he stood the smile clear as day on his face, “Of course. And please, call me Axton. I think we are beyond titles now, right?”

The chair was placed back in place, his staff taken up once again, he held out his hand to grab a hold of her arm. “Lead the way.”

...going through the rite to become what I am today...

A shiver ran down Chiero's spine. The initiation rite for the Suyeta was, much like the smiths themselves, surrounded by mystery and rumors that were never more than half-truths and often purely made up. She involuntarily squeezed her eyes tightly shut, having imagined the feeling of someone plucking them out. A ghastly desire to find out if Axton's eyes had indeed been reduced to bloody hollows rushed through her. A low, agonized moan slithered up the stairs, reminding her that there was someone downstairs who really needed her help. It was never the time to ask such a rude question, and certainly not now. Chiero nodded, mostly to herself, and grasped Axton's hand firmly in her own. "Thank you kindly, Axton. We're by the stairs... now."

The sight that greeted them was not pretty. Her father and an unknown armadillo were standing outside the curtain that separated the store from the operating room. Both were wringing their hands and trying to not look at the dark red smears that ran across the floor. Chiero immediately let go of Axton's hand, leaving him at the bottom of the stairs as she rushed through the curtain to find the source of the blood.

If the front room had looked disturbing, the thing that had been dragged onto her operating table was in what looked like an irreparable state. Chiero snatched her stained green apron from its hook right beside the doorway and went to inspect the body as she tied the strings behind her back. It looked like the armadillo outside, except that this one had a horrific, bloody mess where his right foot should have been. Pink bone splinters poked out from the unrecognizable pulp at the end of his leg that had presumably dragged across the ground from the mines and all the way to her clinic. Chiero vaguely registered the healthy armadillo and her father poking their heads in from the other side of the curtain. "Father, please go get the Suyeta. You," she snapped, turning around sharply. "You tell me what happened."

She tightened a tourniquet below the unfortunate miner's knee and frantically began looking for her absolute sharpest knife as the armadillo with both feet began to speak. He had to raise his voice considerably as his friend began to scream. As if on cue, Matarchis withdrew the curtain and led Axton through, carefully guiding him towards the wall where he would not be in the way.

Apparently, the two armadillos and several others had been doing their everyday jobs of mining for minerals, when his friend had unearthed what had appeared to be an unusually large vein of Azurnium, and proceeded to chip away at it without pausing to consider the way gravity worked. A small stone slide had crushed most of his lower leg, and it was only thanks to the other miners that he had even been able to get out. At this, the Armadillo took one look at Chiero sawing through bone and promptly disappeared out the operating room.

Mere minutes later, Chiero stood by her patient's side, applying disinfectant to the stump and carefully bandaging it. She had always liked this part. Passed out, silent patients were infinitely better than kicking, screaming ones. "He's never going to walk again," she said quietly. "I had to cut off his leg. He might be able to hobble around with a crutch or a peg leg, but... He will never run again. Probably never mine again, either." With a sigh, she unbound the tourniquet and tossed it to the floor. She placed her bloody palms against the just as bloody operating table, groaning as she stretched out. "Well, you might not have been able to see it, but you definitely heard it," she said, rubbing a hand against her neck. "Or did you? Did you see his aura?"

There were a few benefits when it came to losing one’s sight. The main among them was an enhancement of their other senses, which in most cases was indeed a blessing. However, in the cases such as this one, his acute sense of smell was more of a curse than a blessing. The offensive thick aroma of cooper filled the room and the badger had to take a moment to collect his self at the bottom of the stairs while his new companion left his side to attend to the injured. From where he stood he could make out the auras of those in the room, even the flickering aura of the one who was injured.

The cries of pain were the one whose aura flickered on the verge of being snuffed out completely. Little time was spent to try and sooth his pains, then again they were of Akamu, pain was part of their daily life. It was what made them strong and fierce, no matter their profession. An army that waited to go at the simplest signal could not be soft when it came to pain, instead they had to embrace it and use it when the time came to defend their people.

To defend their family.

Time dragged for what seemed like forever, those in the room nervous and uncertain, while Chiero was focused and emotionless the mark of a true healer. Eventually, the Gods were kind to the fellow and he passed out into blissful peace and an eerie silence filled the room. When she finally made her way over to him, Axton’s gaze was toward the table on the aura that appeared smaller…weaker, but at least it no longer flickered.

“I did,” he said simply at first before he turned his face toward her own, “You saved his life. I saw his aura, his life force start to…flicker…and then you saved him.” A smile came to his lips as he gave her a small bow of respect, “You are indeed a talented person and one who probably does not get the respect that is due to her.”

The little skunk blushed so deeply that she was sure the white patches of fur in her face were turning pink. She waved a still bloody hand dismissively at no one. "I may not get respect the same way our warriors or the Suyeta do, but the gratitude is there, and that's enough for me."

The poor, one-legged former miner muttered something unintelligible from behind the pair. Chiero threw a quick glance over her shoulder at him. She felt a clinical, detached form of pity for her patient, pride and adrenalin fading in the background to be relieved by duty. She still wasn't done. Silently taking the hand of the Suyeta once more, she led him back to the bottom of the stairs. "Please return to your tea, Axton. I mean, it's likely cold now, but I need to move the poor soul to a soft bed. If you don't mind, I would love to pick your brains about aura, again?"

With that, and a demanding gesture to the remaining armadillo to follow her back to the operating table, she left Axton to his own devices. She was confident that he would find his way safely up the stairs, even if it was unlikely that he already had the layout of the upper floor completely memorized. Out of the three rooms upstairs, he had only been in the kitchen, but neither Matarchis, nor his daughter, were ones to clutter needlessly, and so she didn't think he would accidentally trip on something.

"Aura?" Matarchis asked Axton quietly. Although none of them could be seen, shuffling sounds and faint groans of pain and exertion could be heard as Chiero and the unnamed armadillo moved the amputee into the third and last room on the bottom floor. That part of the clinic was fortunately seldom used. It contained three beds where patients were sometimes left to recover for a little while. The old skunk could not recall someone being in there for more than a couple of days; a testament to the overall toughness of the Akamu people. A suddenly missing leg was a good reason to take it easy for a while, though.

Chiero exited, alone, through a curtain much like the one that led into the operating room, except it looked a little cleaner. "He's still sleeping," she replied to her father's unvoiced question. "His friend doesn't look too good, though. Would you...?"

Matarchis nodded. A merchant by trade, he had always been better at talking than her. They really were a good team. With a slight cough, he left the main room the same way Chiero had just entered it. She shot a vaguely apologetic look at Axton. "There's a bit more to running a clinic than slicing people up. Sorry for holding you up."

The badger left the skunk to her work, happy to sit in other room and finish his tea, though when she returned he stood at the sound of her approach and smiled in her direction. “When you are someone like me, I have a lot of time on my hands as long as the kingdom is not in need of us to repair or replenish their supplies,” he shrugged, the thick muscle there beneath his fur bunched and relaxed with a casual grace that belayed the power he possessed. “I know that you are terribly busy today and would hate to keep you from any more patients, but I would like to see you again, if that is alright?”

Though he would have rather spent more time there, he knew how the trials and hassles of such a profession could be and would rather not bother the young female any more than needed.

“If you are not busy tomorrow, I could pick you meet you here? Then we could go for a walk and stop somewhere for something to eat?”

Perhaps, he could convince the guards to hang back even further than before? Rather than being those lurking shadows as that constant presence he was ever aware of though he could never shake. It was needed, he knew this, but that did not make it any less annoying.

Chiero shuddered briefly at the thought of war breaking out again. It was long before her time, but she was still old enough to have experienced unrest. Even if she felt safe in the belief that no magic users roamed Akamu, there was still unrest in the mountains. A pang of sadness shot through her at the thought of her husband and brother. With a shock she realized that it had been seven years since she last saw the backs of their patrol, seven years since she had kissed someone who was not a family member, seven years since she had actually talked to someone besides her father.

"Yes, I would love to see you again!" She explained, a wide and sunny grin spreading across her face and making the sudden rain clouds of her past dissipate. "I'm afraid I can't know how busy I'll be tomorrow. Mornings are usually busy, but I'm sure my father can keep up with everything for an afternoon."

Smile still in place, she escorted Axton to the door. His two guards, sitting across the street under a tarp that shielded them from the sun, shot up and walked briskly towards the clinic, likely glad to have something to do.

"Well, this is it for today, then," she said. The lazy afternoon light turned the whites of Axtons fur golden. Despite her excitement, Chiero was a little unsure what to do. Bow? No, he couldn't even see that, and she felt that they had passed that point after an hour or two of her picking his brain and (she was a little ashamed to admit) almost crying in front of him. Resolutely, she instead grabbed his hand firmly, interlocked her fingers with his, and raised their combined fist vertically in an old-fashioned handshake. Chiero wasn't a weak woman, but her forearm still looked dainty as it rested against the much bigger musculature of the Suyeta.

The warmth of his palm against hers felt like exactly what it was - a promise of the next day and a new friendship.
