The smoke filled his lungs with a satisfactory burn, the poorly rolled and cheap fumar barely kept together long enough to be enjoyed, but Vitus counted himself fortunate to have even managed to get one. It was rare that anyone would deal with him, let alone be so kind as to give him something, especially when they saw the accursed mark that marred his face. Rage began to kill the slight buzz he had, the sudden increase in blood flow as his heart raced caused his chest to heave with the heavy breaths which resulted in a fit of coughs. The nights in the desert were ever a harsh element to face, made even worse when one had little in the way of clothing. A chill had already began to settle deep within his bones and if it were not for the alcohol that he had coursing through his veins he would have likely been shivering too bad to stand, let alone enjoy the fumar. As it stood, the warmth of its end was one that he relished each time he brought it to his lips.

Dark, cold empty streets surrounded him and it would seem that he had become too drunk for his own good. A welcome assumption if his track record was to be believed and in truth he was not far from it, it had taken more than a bottle or two to get up the nerve to even attempt this idea. It seemed simple enough, in his head and so after a hearty drinking game with himself he drank down enough courage to attempt it. Cold in the dark, his worn boots scuffed on the paved stone beneath his feet. Another and the final pull from the fumar, its ember end burned brightly for a moment before it was finally extinguished on the sole of his boot.

One… he counted to himself. Two… his eyes cast first up one stress and then down the next before he made his final count.

Three!

Steps far steadier than thought possible he made a break for the building across from him. Silent and with practiced skill he worked his way over to a tapestry that hung on the wall and ducked behind it just as the next round of guards walked by on patrol. He would have thought that after so many years they would have changed up the routine just a bit more. Certainly it was not exact, but it had only taken him one day of half ass observing to get the new parts down and make himself ready to enter this fort. At one with the shadows, the buzz he felt earlier all but gone now as his heart raced so loudly the he was able to hear it pounding in his ears. If he got caught he was dead, simple as that, but if he succeeded he would be able to get his honor back.

Get my name back.

Down another hall, up some stairs and he paused at the door that was his goal. Hands that shook outside from the cold were now oddly steady while he took the delicate tools and slipped them into the lock. Deftly his fingers worked and he was rewarded with the soft click of a lock as it disengaged. The handle of the door was cool against his hot palm, as he turned it painstakingly slow; ears tuned to even the smallest sound of someone approaching. With luck and whatever good favor he managed to obtain he slipped into the room without issue. Lock reengaged carefully before he turned to look upon the key to his way out of this misery.

Vassenia Aeaca Scipio, Empress of Atlygaea.

What happened next he is likely to never be sure, whether it was the residual alcohol in his system or a cruel twist of fate, but he knows it was the night he watched his dreams come crashing down. When he somehow jostled a vase from where it rested on the pedestal and sent it crashing to the floor.

“****…”

"I was at the marketplace earlier, and there was this guy, clearly drunk. So, he goes and actually dives into a merchants stand. The whole thing comes crashing down, and one of them starts yelling about their sister. And so I have to get between it, can you believe that? We're Elites!" These words came from a friend, so to speak, belonging to Felix. Another member of the Elite, though Felix constantly questioned why. He'd apparently always been hushed by the other Elites, he was an excellent fighter but he couldn't stand to shut his mouth for even a single moment.

"Be quiet. We're patrolling." Felix simply replied, his attention remaining towards the hallways. Patrolling was about patience, most nights nothing at all would happen. It also took discipline, your attention always had to be full. These were qualities that Felix's partner for the night didn't share. He wasn't sure how long this Elite would last, at this rate he'd be lucky to only be demoted.

"Nothing ever happens, nobody is brain-dead enough to invade the castle. If anyone tried, they wouldn't live long enough to see they ****ing with the wrong people." With each word spoken by this man, Felix was put more on edge. This was not how the Elite operated, and this man was simply a disgrace to the title.

"This isn't how we do things. Except for patrolling, silence. Now." Felix replied, earning him a sour look from his companion. They spent good amounts of time in the central hallways, earning dirty looks from other Elites, probably because they were heard talking. Other than the occasional voice and very quiet footsteps, the palace carried little to no noise most nights. "Central hallways are clear, we should go check on-" Felix's hushed report was interrupted by the sound of ceramic breaking. Both men turned their heads immediately, their instincts were tuned from training. It was close, very close. Other Elites would be heading there too.

"Keep on patrol, I'll go." Felix said, running in the direction. Typical protocol was based on the scenario. Should the Emperor or Empress ever be in direct danger, all attention goes there. Should it possibly be a decoy to lure people away, one member would remain on patrol and another would investigate. Not every patrol was two members, many patrols consisted of many. And it was possible that this was simply an accident caused by even the Empress herself. However, the most important duty of being an Elite was to protect the Empress.

When Felix reached the right hall there were two other men there. There was no telling which one was patrolling the halls to the chamber, but one thing was for sure, if this was an intruder, those two wouldn't be forgiven easily to say the least. Felix distinctively heard a click from the door as one of the two men turned the key. If all was well, it was a false alarm, but without any words spoken Felix already knew that these two men had his back and he had theirs. All of them having weapons drawn, the door burst open.

"You're under arrest under the charges of grand treason!" Felix exclaimed the death sentence at the man they all saw upon entering.

“Good night, Empress,” her lady-in-waiting had wished her before the door closed behind her, leaving Vassenia alone with her thoughts. Night had befallen the kingdom and the day had been trying, filled with more meetings with advisors that spent more time worrying about whether or not she could “follow their words” than getting anything done. Time and time again, she’d remind them that she was more than capable of following, and time and time again, they insisted on breaking things down to the point that any member of her kingdom could have understood them. But, where she was a woman, they thought this necessary and prudent. By the end of the day, she was stressed, irritated, with a headache that wouldn’t leave her be no matter how many medicines she was given.

Heading out onto her balcony for a final look down at her kingdom, bathed in the moon’s cold light, she lingered, leaning atop her rail with a look of wary. How could they have let things get so bad? Indartir may have had its issues, but it was one of the gems of Atlygaea, Others, however, weren’t so lucky…specifically Ursius. They had fallen so far, barely able to sustain a living while being repeatedly taken advantage of by the people who claimed to be their betters. The entirety of Atlygaea had been built on their backs and they could hardly afford to keep food on the table for their families. What sort of a person would allow that to continue?

Her advisors, though, tried to tell her that it wasn’t as bad as she believed, that she was exaggerating due to her emotions. By the time the talk was done, she had been read for being a woman for the majority of the time rather than anything productive being done. The one person who’d been there to help and could see she was actively doing what was needed was gone. It left her alone once more, surrounded by a group of men who couldn’t see past the tips of their limbs to acknowledge that she wasn’t in the wrong and could do the job set before her by birthright.

With a sigh, she pushed away from the railing, a final look spared to the few people who still milled below. Silently, the woman padded to her bed, feet leaving her slippers as the covers engulfed her, body sinking into the silken fabrics and soft pillows as she drifted off to sleep.

That sleep, however, didn’t remain.

A sound woke her up and had her startling awake. A vase. Her vase next to her bed had broken, and she was no longer alone in the room. Rolling to the other side of her bed and grabbing her Unguis from beneath her pillow, strapping it on as she moved before she was ready to fight. But the commotion wasn’t done there, as others came running into the room. Her guard came crashing through her door, weapons drawn, bearing down on the man as the lights came on, light pouring into her room and providing enough for her to catch a glimpse of the man’s face.

He was dishonored.

Sharing a look with her guard, she cautioned them with a hand as she approached a few steps, keeping enough distance between she and them so that her guard didn’t freak and this man didn’t get an edge if he chose the wrong option. “You don’t have to do this,” Vassenia cautioned him, eyes bearing on him. “You’ve not done anything you could regret yet…Go with my guards willingly and we can get this all sorted.”

Lights flashed bright, orbs of light blinked in and out of his focus though he made not a single move or step. Instead, his hand rested on the handle of the knife at his belt while he pretended to give some thought to the words his Empress. The woman’s steps were slow in their approach and he could all but keep himself from laughing at the utter nonsense of her words. She just did not understand what it meant to be what he was, to he who he now was. Already there was plenty in his life to regret and he saw no choice in the matter than to do what he had to do in order to make sure he could get back what was taken from him.

To reclaim the honor he had squandered and lost.

“My Empress, you are wrong,” he knife drawn and thrown in one smooth motion to take down one of the guards. “I regret everything but this moment!” he laughed and jumped into action. The other guard he rushed and tackled past the one who appeared to be the Captain. With a grunt they slammed into the wall, which though it stunned the guard, it was only for a moment for in the next instant he drove an elbow into the spin of Vitus who had him pinned against the wall.

“ARGH!” an outcry of pain ripped from his lips was cut short by the knee to the face which broke his nose. The sensation that he heard more than felt, for the sickening sound as the bones popped followed by the all too familiar scent of cooper from the blood that gushed from his nostrils. Another strike to his back and he shoved back in time to be caught up by the Captain who pinned his arms behind his back.

“Look at how many of you that it took to take me down,” he laughed and spit blood in the face of the guard he had tackled against the wall, which promptly earned him a punch to his already crushed nose. After a grunt and some snorts he became to laugh, only to once again spit in the face of the same guard.

“You hit like a woman!”

Another punch across his face and his jaw snapped shut, only for the next moment he then spit blood along with a tooth out at the guard who hit him. It was the last thing he remembered because the next punch was hard enough that it knocked him out completely.
